Last night was phenomenal. This is the second time I've been here and this time, I brought a party of 8 for dinner. Let me just say that nobody went home with a doggie bag and if you think that's because they don't have big enough portions for you...then YOU my dear are a glutton. If you can find Dolce, you are in for a real Food Network experience. You know...where you watch their shows and the flood gates of your saliva glands gush wide open and you are getting pissed because you can't just get in your car and go to Chicago, Boston or Portland? Well, in my humble opinion, Dolce Pane E Vino has come to us and they have arrived in nothing but stellar fashion. To be able to dine on vegetables and fruit that still has a heartbeat is simple nirvana. To savor roasted bone marrow with fiercely toasted crostinis while sipping on delightfully iced acai' white sangria is downright illegal. And their flatbreads (pizza) kicks it up notches above most pizzerias in San Diego with a tomato sauce and flatbread relationship that is not just going to be a one-night-stand. If you don't like their flatbreads, something is seriously wrong with you...maybe your tastebuds are dead...or you missed an appointment with your therapist....or you are into your cologne/perfume more than dining au natural. Capice? There is one dish listed as an appetizer that totally blew our entire party away. I missed getting a photo of them because 1) everyone popped these little beauties in their mouths before I could snap the button 2) sometimes photos can be so annoying. JAMON IBERICO DE BELLOTA AROUND HONEYDEW MELON. If you know your meat candy...then you know that life is way too short to skimp and not get this. It's sexy, smooth, salty, sweet, savory....front-door fabulous. Next time I go (oh...I'm definitely going back) I'm wearing a cowboy shirt in honor of the GM who apparently, is from Houston, TX. This man is the epitome of class in slinky, black cowboy boots and grace. Watching this head honcho refill water glasses, clear plates and mingle with the diners spoke volumes in my book. The same goes for ANDY who took 4 of my 5 calls when the number of people in our reservation kept changing. (Dang friends.) Andy, you are front-door fabulous too. I have a sneakin' suspicion that Dolce Pane e Vino will become "Big as all hell and half of Texas", thus preventing me from getting an easy reservation sooner than later. Wow! Following advice from another local we went here on Saturday night. We didn't have a reservation but still got a lovely table out on the outdoor patio during a magnificent sunset. A similar place is Burlap in Del Mar but similar only in style because this place is much more secluded and quiet and serene. The wait staff are excellent but not career waiters. Which is perfect in my opinion because they're younger and more casually approachable. The food is wonderful and not huge portions but just enough. Sometimes it's nice to see how the other half lives. If I was a One-percenter in San Diego, I think I'd spend a lot of time at Dolce. However, you don't need tons of cash to enjoy great food, fine wine, and good company. I felt instantly at ease there. It's quaint, comfortable, and has a friendly vibe that's very inviting. Granted, the prices are a little out of my budget but I was on vacation. My sister and I popped in for some grape juice of the fermented variety. The staff and patrons around us were a joy to talk to. We got a pizza to go after finishing our glasses of vino (hey, you gotta have vino there--it's in their name!). I must say that it certainly is refreshing to enjoy gluten-free pizza that doesn't taste gluten free--in fact, it was heavenly (although some credit goes to my sister for substituting ingredients that gave it the perfect combo of greens, meat, and cheese). I look forward to visiting again as soon as I am able. read more

Had the best lunch today. The spinach salad with champagne dressing is fantastic. I added field greens and goat instead of feta and had chicken too. So yummy. There drinks are great and an amazing wine list. The atmosphere is usually fairly quiet during the day and everyone is more than friendly and accommodating. The blt is served on thick, grilled bread with crunchy bacon, tomato, and lettuce. The soup today was a short rib soup today was amazing and so full of flavor. This is a great find! We started with a special flatbread recommended by our server, which was steak with jalapeños...delicious! I then had the short ribs and my wife had the salmon, both were excellent! The wine list is top notch and we were thrilled that they had three different bottles of B Cellars wines, which is our favorite winery in Napa Valley. I took my sister here for dinner and after going into great detail with the waiter that she had celiac disease, how her food had to be prepared on clean surfaces and that cross contamination was something they HAD to be VERY careful of, they still managed to screw it up and she's still sick. 3 days later. Do better Dolce, there wasn't a damn person in the restaurant when we came in so that's just plain ignorance and laziness when you fuck up the ONE table that's in the restaurant. read more

I have loved this place over the years. Great wine selection, quality food and great ambiance. All these things still exist, but after our meal tonight I am a bit appalled at the change in portion size. My husband and I went to dinner for a quick date night after back to school night for our kids. Luckily we weren't too hungry. I ordered the goat cheese and beet salad for $13 and he ordered their house made pasta dish for $18. My salad was skimpy, but it was a salad and I figured maybe some people order this with a meal. Expensive, but I gave this a pass. My husband's pasta dish came in a bowl smaller then our ice cream bowls. I thought at first my salad came with a small side of pasta. No that was his meal!! It was like 8oz of pasta with a meat sauce. Nothing too special for $18!! How expensive is pasta these days? Really? Everything was excellent tasting, but I doubt I will go back as I am now sitting on the coach at 10:30pm at night snacking on chips since my $13 salad didn't quite satisfy my appetite. read more

I always look forward to Dolce night! My husband and I have certain tables that are our favorites when it's just the two of us and certain tables when we are with friends. My favorite is the Lamb and the cedar salmon, Last time I had the angry style chicken, I was hungry and it hit the spot, so good. In September I reserved the big patio table for my husbands birthday. We had 14 people I ordered a variety of appetizers, the cheese and meat platters are so wonderful. They were so in tune to our needs. I planned ahead and they brought out several different main dishes which we all shared family style. The server and I both agreed just keep the food coming until everyone starts to slow down. It worked out great everyone had such a good time and we got to try so many things, I brought a birthday cake which I couldn't eat because it wasn't gluten-free. So I ordered for myself and other gluten-free people the butterscotch pudding. You've got to try the butterscotch pudding. They also make gluten-free flatbread pizzas. That was one of the appetizers I ordered. I have to be gluten free and they are so good to accommodate me. I think Dolce is favorite for birthday party's now we also had my mom in-laws 96th birthday there she's Italian and loved the lasagna. I liked this place but didn't love it. One of the reasons I booked this place was it made a couple of lists for "top romantic dining spots". Not sure I would agree with that label. While the place has a nice vibe overall, the dining room seemed more conducive to groups than tables for 2. Despite making a reservation, we were presented with less than ideal table options. First options presented was a table on the patio right near the door with no heater close-by on a cold January evening. Nope. Next option presented was a high top table immediately adjacent to the front door of the restaurant. We sat there for about 2 minutes before a rowdy group of revelers stumbled through on their way to dinner. Luckily, we asked for yet another option (Waiter was gracious) and were fortunate to have one of the lounge area tables open up right then. It wasn't awful but the seating style is probably intended more for sipping a drink and having appetizers than a full meal. On the whole, the food was good. They had run out of a salad I requested but suggested the Arugula & Prosciutto salad as an alternative and it was good. Both our entrees were good. She had the chicken and I had the butcher's cut of the day, which was a flat iron steak. The crown jewel of the evening was undoubtedly the salted caramel pot de creme for dessert. I could see myself coming back just for that and an overpriced glass of wine. There are a lot of good Italian restaurants in north county so while the overall experience was good and I wouldn't deter anybody from it, there are plenty of other options I'll be revisiting before I return. read more

Dolce Pane E Vino is the new characterological litmus test I intend to apply to everyone in my life. The test will be as follows: there will be a mutually agreed upon time in which we meet at Dolce Pane E Vino. We shan't speak until the food I have ordered for us comes out from the kitchen. At this point you will sample the lasagna, the angry chicken, and a pizza. If any of these dishes do not completely blow you away, we have nothing in common and will cease all contact effective immediately. Security will politely escort you out the rear exit and possibly administer a light beating in the parking lot depending on your level of dissatisfaction with the aforementioned dishes. This review is overdue, our visit was a few months ago but! Loved this place. We had excellent company and reservations. Two thing that make a dining experience at a busy place like this start out on the right foot. It's got assorted tables so if you'd like to be at a tall table, low table, in one of the more lounge corners etc ask about it when you reserve. The wine list is extensive and the menu has everything you could want for a low light romantic atmosphere. Gnocchi and lamb and small plates... Meats and cheeses and dessert. Yes please! We met friends for a double date and they sat us in a cozy corner. We ordered some starters and all had main dishes and even some dessert. Each dish was delicious and cooked properly. It was so hard to decide because everything looked good. The crowd is very RSF Del Mar Carmel Valley, established and a little older. But we were there (early 30s) and the age ranged with a girls night across from us too. It's a great choice for a dinner for four, taking your parents to dinner or date night. read more

I've enjoyed dinner here four times over the past three months, and I absolutely love it! Because we typically share our plates, I've had a chance to make it through several items on the menu, with these being my favorites: *Jidori Chicken -- "angry style" to make it spicy *Roasted Quail -- perfectly prepared *Cioppino -- typically not a fan, but this one is exceptional *Poblano & 'Nduja Sausage flatbread -- this would be my favorite for eating while sitting at the bar and enjoying a few glasses of wine. *Lasagna -- their handmade pasta is fantastic, though be warned, this dish is quite rich. *Risotto -- you can have them make it with salmon, steak, or the daily fish special, and it's made with just the right consistency. Now I know this may sound crazy, but the Bibb Lettuce salad is one of the best salads I've ever eaten. During the last two visits I had to force myself to not order a second one. Each time the service has been top notch, and the bartenders know their wine and how to properly balance a cocktail. They're also good at going off menu and crafting drinks to your taste, which is something I thoroughly enjoy. It's a great go-to restaurant, drop in and enjoy. read more

we had a real fun time here. we were so into the conversation and wine, and the server Miles knew exactly how to play it. the food was pretty good, we had salads, brussel sprouts, lamb slders (a little too salty). but the best part was when the manager came by to say the wine we wanted wasn't avail, but he would accomodate another wine at the same price. we opted for the 2008 Cab by Shlein Vineyard "Emilio's Terrace" which really was amazing. overall, a super time, i can't believe this was my first time. i'll be back. cute bar, very cute tables and decor. thanks for a great time, miles! read more

What a fantastic gem hidden in beautiful San Diego. I stopped in for a quick glass of wine and was promptly greeted by Katharine. She was delightful! She made me the best gin cocktail that I have ever had and recommended that I try one of their incredible pizzas. I didn't intend to eat but because of the high quality cocktail she made I trusted her advice and ordered one to go. I'm so happy that I did, it's the best pizza I've had in San Diego. This will be on my list of must stop places as I visit San Diego several times over the next year. read more

We eat here at least twice a week. Love love the BLTA sandwich. I get it with the salad option. The salad is just greens with a delicious vinaigrette and is unjustifiably good. It's so simple! But the greens are fresh from Chino's and the dressing rocks. Watch out for the modified menu from 2:30 to 5. It's basically flat breads and drinks (no BLTA). But at least they are still open. Salumi flat bread is really good, butterscotch dessert is really good too. They make their own gelatos, but I am not a fan. Two small things I like: their iced tea and music. read more

If I could, I would give this place 5 stars for the food and 1 star for the service. I made a reservation and when the hostess pointed us to a low sitting cocktail table near the front, I was like "ohhhhhh nooooooo". INAPPROP! We were there for dinner and wanted a real table, so she took us to the chef's communal table. The cheese plate is excellent and the apple compote is really unusual but delicious. The flatbreads were good as well. Very extensive wine list. We could see into the kitchen and everything coming out looked great. For being in such an upscale location, the staff isn't properly trained. I mean seating people at cocktail tables when they are there to have dinner? Also, the waitress seemed in a rush and did things like reaching across us to pour water because she was too lazy to walk around. You can find better trained staff at your local Chili's (not even joking). I really hope they can improve the service because with great food and great service this place could be around for a long time. read more

The interior has a strange and rather awkward layout. There is a patio out back [not very pretty] and a couple of tables outside at the entrance. Inside is rather dark and there is a lounge-type area to one side which did not seem to make sense. I went on a Sunday at about 4:00 p.m. The menu is extremely limited at that time---I had a margarita flatbread with prosciutto added [for a substantial extra charge]. There is no Happy Hour as per the host, and the wines are expensive. There were some noisy "Housewives of Fairbanks Ranch" at the bar proceeding to get drunk on a Sunday afternoon. read more

Fail. Very poor service & the food was terrible. Staff seemed stressed, but it wasn't because the restaurant was busy. Very disappointed. Brought my mom there for Mother's Day and was embarrassed, they sat us at this huge table... there was only four of us sitting at a table for 10. When we requested a smaller more quaint table, maybe away from the door, because my poor mom was freezing, they said ALL the other tables were reserved. There was barely anyone at this restaurant. We were there for an hour and half and yet those tables (several tables) still remained empty. Seriously WTH(Heck). P.S. I'm not one of those high-maintenance, anal-retentive sort of customers either, so for me to get on here and write a review, it had to be a horrible experience. read more

I've been here on a couple of occasions. Each time, we ended up with the same waiter. I'm obsessed with this waiter. His name is miles. He's sweet, caring and fast. He makes the entire experience 10 times better. I love their food here. I got the salmon and my boyfriend got the lasagna. I kept eating off his plate too. It was so yummy! Then, we got the brownie desert with their home made gelato. It was so yummy! Everything was great! The service, the parking, the environment and food! Can't wait to be back! I absolutely love Dolce!! As a new resident to San Diego, my family decided to take me out to dinner for my 25th birthday. We decided on Dolce mainly because it was close, and second because we are huge wine fans. We showed up without a reservation (bad idea for parties of 4 or more) and they managed to work us in anyways. They have traditional style seating, so you usually get sat with other parties- which, when wine is flowing, is usually a lot of fun! The food was amazing, definitley worth the price. The wine was fantastic as well, as my family and I have been back many times to indulge. And dessert, well... enter at your own risk! Came here on a Sunday for an early lunch before the horse races at Del Mar. The place is beautiful and unique inside but we actually sat outside on the patio which was equally lovely. We sat down around 11:30 and our waitor brought us waters and didn't come back for another ten minutes to take our drink orders...we got mimosas with the house (aka shitty) champagne which were nine bucks a pop, but standard for this area. I ordered the lamb sausage flat bread and my dude ordered the tomato/mozzarella/proscuitto panini. For 17/18 dollars I expected the flat bread to have a LOT more lamb on it. The bread part was tasty and crispy, but the toppings just did nothing for me. Poorly seasoned greens, no sauce, and just a few sad pieces of lamb sausage...I was disappointed. The panini was delicious, but again, not very generous on the meat. Our server did not come check on us once; he saw that we had finished and grabbed our plates and didn't come back for another ten minutes so I actually had to go grab him to get the bill. We wanted a quick but enjoyable lunch and it ended up being 2 hours because the service was so slow. There was no one inside and only 4 tables full of people outside with two servers...the service should have been a lot better. Overall, I would say the food was about a 6, the service was a 3, and the actual restaurant style and atmosphere gets an 8. My girl's night out with a friend was more like being left out in the cold by the hostess. This was our first time eating here at the restaurant and we were so excited about the place. Upon arrival, the two hostesses did not welcome us at all. We were given the cold shoulder and told that all there are no available tables, despite not being asked, we shared that we actually made reservations for the outdoor area. The hostess then lead us to a table. But given the cold weather and seeing that it's completely empty, we asked if we could get a table that's closer to the fireplace. At point blank, she said no because those were reserved and that, in fact, all of the outside tables were reserved as well. The kicker is that after dining there for 2 hours and being told there are no availability as well as being denied warmer seating--more than half the outdoor tables were empty (btw food was Chef Boyardee with garnishes for $$$). I guess these 5 tables must have cancelled their reservation or they had invisible patrons. Bitter taste for a place that has dolce in its namesake--shame on a rigid hostess on a frigid day making us feel invisible too. read more

We were there for their Caymus Wine Dinner that Chef Chris paired perfectly with the Caymus and then we were there for Christmas Eve with family and friends. Excellent food and service.
