Driving by to head to another place for dinner and we passed this place along the way and decided to flip a U turn and pull in and try instead. Let me tell you this place did not disappoint one bit. This restaurant is slowly going way downhill. This place used to be one of our favorite goto restaurants. How things have changed! Let's attack the food first. I will admit that the calamari appetizer was good. It was not outstanding as it used to be. My husband tried the Del Mar Crab Ravioli. It was fair and he would not order it again. I know that he was hungry when he finished. I ordered the crispy skinned duck. It was my favorite dish here. But this time, the skin was not crispy and the duck was dry and over cooked. So disappointing. The dishes used to be so large that we always had food to take home. Now, it doesn't taste good enough to take home and the portions are smaller. Believe it or not, this was not the first thing that happened. Because of past experience, we now order our food in stages. First we order our beverages. Then we wait a short while and order any starters. After we are done with the starters, we order our entrees. We do not want all of the food to come out of the kitchen at the same time as has happened in the past. When the bill came, I left a gift card and my credit card. When the server came back, the gift card was not fully used, but we did not get it back. I found a receipt the a little more than a dollar that was charged on my credit card. It turned out that the gift card was enough for the bill alone without charging my credit card. The gift card had a small amoutn on it, but the card itself was not returned. When I questioned it, the server told us that the bartender told her to do it this way. The whole transaction was wrong!! It is obvious to us that the people working there did not have a clue how to run the transaction. Also, there didn't seem to be anyone in charge on that night. So happy they added Happy Hour specials during the week Parking is super easy in the front, along the side or back of the restaurant. We were able to sit quickly in the bar area. The vibe was pretty chill with the baseball game playing on the tv. Service was a bit slow but it's because our server Chris was also the bartender and was pretty busy making everyone's drinks The food was delicious, I noticed they changed their calamari it used to be yummy strips now they're the traditional crispy calamari. The artichokes are almost always my favorite The sea goddess drink was the delicious blue drink that tastes like a vacation in a glass ! The Golden Hour (drink) and that on the other hand was beyond sour. It tastes mostly like lemon and purred strawberries were in the glass, which made it very difficult to drink. Strawberries would get stuck in the straw every sip I took. Our server Chris was pretty awesome we watched him multitask making drinks and returning to our table to tend to us. He remained calm and professional with a smile on his face. The host Olivia came to our table and removed the Happy Hour menu and gave it to a couple at a table behind us which was very random and odd she didn't say anything to us but removed the menu. Visited again for brunch, and again a sub-par experience. We ordered one tuna Nicoise and an order of huevos rancheros. The food was spot on, but service not so good. We were seated the front "outdoor" area--a very pleasant space. Our server entered the room several times to take orders from other tables, and I tried several times to get her attention, but she kept her eyes down and never once looked our way. Fortunately, another staffer, in the indoor dining room, saw what was going on and came to help us. Kudos to him. I also found it quite offputting for the window washer to show up and begin washing the exterior of the windows which were right up against the tables. Not very appetizing to have dirty, drippy water running down the glass so close to us while we were trying to enjoy our meal. One would think it would be possible to arrange to have this done outside of normal meal hours. Such a shame because we love this place in the evening. The wine pairing dinners they hold occasionally are stellar too. Just can't recommend for brunch. read more

I was debating leaving a review on this place but I think it needs to be done. I expected to go out for a nice fancy brunch and had high expectations for this place. Unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment. I don't plan to return and neither does the friend I went with. It was a very hot day so when we were asked if we want to sit on the patio or inside, we looked at the patio and saw that the windows were only partial windows and completely open to outside so we opted to sit inside. Really made no difference though because they left the doors open between inside and the patio so it was just as hot and uncomfortable inside. Because the door was open there were also flies inside. 2 of us. We each ordered a drink ($16 each), then our food order was placed after. My food came before either of the drinks did. It took a while just to get our two drinks. My friends drink tasted very watered down. My espresso martini was okay, but mostly just Kahlua. My chilaquiles came out with already soft wet soggy chips. The "crema" was more like a completely liquid runny milk. At first I didnt even think they put crema on it so I asked for a side of it and the waitress was like...do you mean extra green sauce? Im like...uh no...I asked for crema - ya know the white sauce and that's when they brought me a side of it and it was obvious how thin and watery it was. My biggest issue though? I asked for over medium eggs. I like runny yolk but no runny white. A simple request all resturants should be able to handle. Yet I got eggs with completely cooked yolk (over hard). The only positives were that they came with carnitas and avocado. Our drinks and waters were empty, my food was clearly finished and pushed to the edge of our table but no waiter was returning. I stuck my card out on the corner of the table but still no check. It took about 15 mins for us to get a check. For around $65 for two drinks and one chilaqueles, you could go literally anywhere else and get better food and experience. I'll also mention there was a table of women in the corner who were extremely loud and disruptive screaming like children, but that is admittedly not the resturants' fault. Afterwards we opted to go over to Understory to have MUCH better drinks. read more

Sadly, the West End is slipping. Went with friends yesterday and it was rough. The Crab Louis salad barely had any dressing gone it, there were about 4 cherry tomatoes and 10 long string beans. The chopped salads and the crab came with diced avocados that were rock hard. When we told the waiter, he ignored it and cleared the plates with a pile of them in every bowl. The clam chowdah was watery. Maybe going on a Sunday evening was bad timing. Not sure if I will go back at this point. read more

Went with a group of 10 for Father's Day. The restaurant was full with several large groups. As a result, food service was slow. They had to call in an extra chef to handle the load. Some started with clam chowder which was piping hot & had small clams in it. Definitely worth it. Two people ordered the avocado toast with eggs. Unfortunately there wasn't much avocado on the toast. Three people ordered the machaca omelette with carnitas. Came with sliced avocado on top. One person ordered All- American breakfast. Two kids ordered French toast which was well received. Also had an order of duck potstickers which were deep fried. Portions were good sized. The main complaints were the lack of avocado on the avocado toast and the long wait time. Very happy that my husband found this last minute for our anniversary date night. Beautiful aesthetic and absolutely phenomenal food! Got the Tropicale Salad to start. And it was quite a nutritious and hearty salad. Fresh mango and tomatoes and hearts of palm with the rugula and that dressing was unbelievably good! We asked for the dressing on the side and added only a little and it was just perfectly enough. Added some grilled shrimp on top and that flavor was really lovely! Only downside is that there were only four shrimp there and portion size of the hearts of palm and the mango was also quite little. So it was a lot of arugula with very little of the extra toppings. Mussels in Coconut Curry - real good! What a large portion size of the muscles and the sauce was also very smooth and had a nice distinct coconut flavor with a nice herbiness as well. Grilled crusty bread on the side was very soft and perfect on the inside and crusty on the outside. The combination of the muscles with the sauce and the bread was really lovely. Del Mar Crab Ravioli - UNBELIEVABLY GOOD! I have no words to say how good this was! Really large raviolis with a good amount of filling(real proper crab not just some mixture of stuff) + very delicious creamy sauce. Super good! It was only 4 raviolis, but they were large!! That also got us a Figgy Bread Pudding on the house when I happened to mention that it was our anniversary dinner. The bread pudding was SO soft and warm and cozy and just wow! Super yummy and indulgent. Server also recommended a vanilla ice cream on the side and it was just the perfect sidekick. 10/10 recommend this place. I had a great time here for weekend brunch! Great location by Torrey pines beach. It was very empty when I was there which was interesting. They have a lot of indoor and patio seating. It was clean. The service was outstanding as he was very kind & attentive. I ordered bottomless (22$) which was worth the price. I also ordered the crab cake bene which was crispy and flavorful. My friend didn't like her omelet though. The menu has a lot of great options such as sandwiches, soup, tacos. I would come back to try the clam chowder. Located right across from the Los Penasquitos Lagoon this little brunch and lunch spot is on the border of Del Mar and Carmel Valley. I have driven down this street countless times over the years and I've seen all the different versions that have been in this place and will say West End is my favorite of those. We usually stop in for breakfast and every time that we do it is consistently good. Inside is also recently remodeled and they did a really great job with the bar area especially. There is a free parking lot attached out back otherwise neighborhood parking is also easy to find. Our server was very polite and everything that we ordered came out very fast. We started off with the Shrimp Ceviche, which is pretty good, although it was a little too watery in my opinion. It almost was like a soup with some ceviche in it. For my breakfast, I chose the Crab Cake Benedict and thought it was fantastic. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the crabcake was full of crab flavor and I just loved it. They were also perfectly crispy and I really enjoyed the meal as a whole. I would only recommend coming for happy hour to get drinks and appetizers. The entrees I had (Steak Frites and Wagyu Cheeseburger) were disappointing. The steak frites were very bland and dry. 2 burgers in our group were ordered medium-rare but as shown were close to well done. Fish and chips and the Duck were decent. Our server, Ricardo, was fantastic--super attentive--and I believe the owner also came by to check on us, which was a nice touch. That kind of hospitality definitely makes me want to come back. Roasted Brussel Sprouts ($12): Decent, but nothing special. Baja Ceviche ($12): Wouldn't reorder. Ahi Tuna Poke ($18): This was the standout--my favorite of the evening. Fries ($8): Disappointed. Portion felt small for the size of the bowl. I get that HH portions can be smaller, but maybe serve it in a smaller dish so it looks more intentional. San Diego, CA - a great place to hang out with a big group! The outdoor seating at night wasn't cold at all as they had heaters out. The food was delicious overall, and even though the service was a bit slow, the servers were helpful and friendly. The dishes I tried including appetizers and a few bites of people's entrees lol were all tasty and the items seemed to be reasonably priced. I liked how their calamari was meaty and soft, but I know some prefer the tentacles more. The coconut curry mussels with bread was a hit too. I also enjoyed their ceviche, although the portion could be a little bigger. Their tortilla chips were loved by adults and kids! For my own entree I had the chipotle linguine with shrimp. I killed the plate. I also tried some flat iron steak and it's juicy and tender. Their clam chowder was so creamy and flavorful (and they said it's award-winning, so give it a shot.) finally, I got to tried their veggie risotto as a side too and that was delicious as well! We shared two dishes: Duck Potstickers (5/5) -- Six beautiful potstickers filled with delicious duck meat, Napa cabbage and shitake mushrooms. The wonton themselves were thin, which is what I prefer rather than thick chewy ones. The lemongrass, soy, ginger dipping sauce was excellent for the wontons. $14 Paella Special (5/5) -- Wonderful selection of seafood (clams, mussels, squid, shrimp, salmon, and catfish) with chorizo served in saffron rice with green peas. All of the seafood was cooked perfectly -- nothing overcooked! While this dish is not a traditional paella -- e.g., the rice was more like a creamy risotto than fried rice -- the overall dish is outstanding. Our server was very good, attentive, and helpful. My son took me here for Mother's Day which was so sweet. We got a small table by the bar and it is incredibly packed. You can tell they were not prepared at all. I stood at the front for 5 mins with servers and people running around, the hostess walking around and not one person said Hi, I'll be right with you. So I waited as my son parked the car. I said Hi and was acknowledged so I got sat. The bartender was nice enough to come introduce himself and ask as i was seated alone. I told him my son was on his way in. We ordered, the bartender became our server as there was no one else to help. My son got the lobster rav which I was contemplating on getting. Instead I ordered the pork loin, I made sure I asked how the chefs were about cooking it because it was so busy and pork can be easily overcooked, He assured me that they were pros. Well, it came and it was hard, sooooo dry! The veggies were great and so were the potatoes. They even put a tiny end piece on my pate as one of the three. Like the pointy end, hard. Bartender agreed. I sent it back, kept the veggies and potatoes, ordered salmon but asked the same question so they would make sure they paid attention to making the salmon med rare. But it was taking forever and by the time my son was done, I just cancelled it. And mind you, he is the slowest eater of anyone I know. He got a brownie ice cream dessert and loved it. I am glad he was happy with his meal and it was just nice spending time together, but I couldn't wait to get home to actually eat some protein!!! read more

This is my third year in a row going to brunch here before heading to the Del Mar horse races. We made this a little bit of a tradition because how much we've enjoy this place. The service and bottomless mimosas really has us returning year after year. My friends and I ordered a variety of dishes and, of course, their bottomless. We had a memorable dinner here a few weeks ago. We requested a table by the window and were seated at one. We ordered cocktails that were recommended by our very attentive and friendly waiter Ricky, and we were very pleased with his recommendations! For dinner we ordered the pesto goat cheese appetizer, which was amazing, but our favorite appetizer was the artichokes. I cannot wait to go back and eat those again. My husband ordered the flat iron steak for dinner and it was perfectly cooked and juicy. We also appreciated that the spinach on his plate was well prepared....I hate when a vegetable on an entree is an after thought and you could tell that was not the case here. I had the linguine with clams, which was light and truly tasted like the sea. My husband ordered the hazelnut gelato and it did not disappoint.
