West End Del Mar sits on Carmel Valley Rd, bordering on the scenic wetlands, just inside Del Mar. It was an ideal spot for meeting a group of friends for Sunday brunch. There were 5 of us, and we were seated promptly and immediately offered drinks. We hadn't even actually all taken our seats yet, so asked our server to give us a minute or two. She returned as requested, then again to take our orders. Right on the food runners heels, she asked if everything tasted good, and we, of course told her we hadn't had a chance yet to try anything. Then she went AWOL. The server actually appeared in our dining room again to take orders from other tables, but never looked or way even though we kept trying to get her attention. My poached eggs were hard as rocks although I had ordered them with soft, runny yolks.a couple of other dishes at the table weren't as ordered either. Eventually, we flagged down a busser and asked for our orders to be corrected. My replacement eggs were delivered in a bowl half full of water. Things didn't improve for the rest of the meal. Never saw or server again until she delivered our check. Yup, we had to all a passing busser to request it for us. I have to say, they plates looked beautiful, and tasted fine after being corrected. I've had very good dinners and happy hours at West End in the past, and am hoping this extremely disappointing experience was an isolated case. read more

Very happy that my husband found this last minute for our anniversary date night. Beautiful aesthetic and absolutely phenomenal food! Got the Tropicale Salad to start. And it was quite a nutritious and hearty salad. Fresh mango and tomatoes and hearts of palm with the rugula and that dressing was unbelievably good! We asked for the dressing on the side and added only a little and it was just perfectly enough. Added some grilled shrimp on top and that flavor was really lovely! Only downside is that there were only four shrimp there and portion size of the hearts of palm and the mango was also quite little. So it was a lot of arugula with very little of the extra toppings. Mussels in Coconut Curry - real good! What a large portion size of the muscles and the sauce was also very smooth and had a nice distinct coconut flavor with a nice herbiness as well. Grilled crusty bread on the side was very soft and perfect on the inside and crusty on the outside. The combination of the muscles with the sauce and the bread was really lovely. Del Mar Crab Ravioli - UNBELIEVABLY GOOD! I have no words to say how good this was! Really large raviolis with a good amount of filling(real proper crab not just some mixture of stuff) + very delicious creamy sauce. Super good! It was only 4 raviolis, but they were large!! That also got us a Figgy Bread Pudding on the house when I happened to mention that it was our anniversary dinner. The bread pudding was SO soft and warm and cozy and just wow! Super yummy and indulgent. Server also recommended a vanilla ice cream on the side and it was just the perfect sidekick. 10/10 recommend this place. Located right across from the Los Penasquitos Lagoon this little brunch and lunch spot is on the border of Del Mar and Carmel Valley. I have driven down this street countless times over the years and I've seen all the different versions that have been in this place and will say West End is my favorite of those. We usually stop in for breakfast and every time that we do it is consistently good. Inside is also recently remodeled and they did a really great job with the bar area especially. There is a free parking lot attached out back otherwise neighborhood parking is also easy to find. Our server was very polite and everything that we ordered came out very fast. We started off with the Shrimp Ceviche, which is pretty good, although it was a little too watery in my opinion. It almost was like a soup with some ceviche in it. For my breakfast, I chose the Crab Cake Benedict and thought it was fantastic. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the crabcake was full of crab flavor and I just loved it. They were also perfectly crispy and I really enjoyed the meal as a whole. There was a big party last night that used the whole terrace. It didn't matter because the bar was fully staffed and the service was incredible. The meal was terrific. We started with the artichoke appetizer. It was delicious and easy to eat because it was soft enought to cut with a fork. My husband had the salmon special and I had the duck (one of my favorite dishes). My husband enjoyed the salmon that was service with mashed potatoes, spinach and vegetables. The duck was very good this time and it was served with vegetables and fingerling potatoes. The only down side was that the front door remained open and the night was a bit chilly. It was fairly empty when we arrived, I asked to have the front door closed and that made all of the difference. Roasted Brussel Sprouts ($12): Decent, but nothing special. Baja Ceviche ($12): Wouldn't reorder. Ahi Tuna Poke ($18): This was the standout--my favorite of the evening. Fries ($8): Disappointed. Portion felt small for the size of the bowl. I get that HH portions can be smaller, but maybe serve it in a smaller dish so it looks more intentional. Overall, the food didn't win me over for HH, and I'd probably try other spots for that. They have a lot in the back and there was plenty on the side streets. I ordered salad Niçoise and the seared tuna was a healthy portion and delicious. San Diego, CA - a great place to hang out with a big group! The outdoor seating at night wasn't cold at all as they had heaters out. The food was delicious overall, and even though the service was a bit slow, the servers were helpful and friendly. The dishes I tried including appetizers and a few bites of people's entrees lol were all tasty and the items seemed to be reasonably priced. I liked how their calamari was meaty and soft, but I know some prefer the tentacles more. The coconut curry mussels with bread was a hit too. I also enjoyed their ceviche, although the portion could be a little bigger. Their tortilla chips were loved by adults and kids! For my own entree I had the chipotle linguine with shrimp. I killed the plate. I also tried some flat iron steak and it's juicy and tender. Their clam chowder was so creamy and flavorful (and they said it's award-winning, so give it a shot.) finally, I got to tried their veggie risotto as a side too and that was delicious as well! The kids liked their burgers and fries as well. The kids menu was also reasonably priced. It's a fun evening with great conversations and food at the table with a nice ambiance and delicious food. The ambiance is nice but we were seated in a corner that was tight to get in and out and right by a speaker with loud music coming out. They have an inside seating area and an outside are with a roof. The service was friendly and quick. The food was overall quite tasty. We tried several of their appetizers: the artichokes were surprisingly good, the Baja ceviche was great, the baked goat cheese with pesto was so good but way too oily. The duck potstickers didn't have much filling and didn't taste too much like duck but were perfectly crispy. The crispy calamari came out less crispy. I had the seabass as a main which was good but a little bit on the drier side. The risotto was too cheesy. The lemongrass, soy, ginger dipping sauce was excellent for the wontons. $14 Paella Special (5/5) -- Wonderful selection of seafood (clams, mussels, squid, shrimp, salmon, and catfish) with chorizo served in saffron rice with green peas. All of the seafood was cooked perfectly -- nothing overcooked! My son took me here for Mother's Day which was so sweet. We got a small table by the bar and it is incredibly packed. You can tell they were not prepared at all. I stood at the front for 5 mins with servers and people running around, the hostess walking around and not one person said Hi, I'll be right with you. So I waited as my son parked the car. I said Hi and was acknowledged so I got sat. The bartender was nice enough to come introduce himself and ask as i was seated alone. I told him my son was on his way in. We ordered, the bartender became our server as there was no one else to help. My son got the lobster rav which I was contemplating on getting. Instead I ordered the pork loin, I made sure I asked how the chefs were about cooking it because it was so busy and pork can be easily overcooked, He assured me that they were pros. Well, it came and it was hard, sooooo dry! The veggies were great and so were the potatoes. They even put a tiny end piece on my pate as one of the three. Like the pointy end, hard. Bartender agreed. I sent it back, kept the veggies and potatoes, ordered salmon but asked the same question so they would make sure they paid attention to making the salmon med rare. But it was taking forever and by the time my son was done, I just cancelled it. And mind you, he is the slowest eater of anyone I know. He got a brownie ice cream dessert and loved it. I am glad he was happy with his meal and it was just nice spending time together, but I couldn't wait to get home to actually eat some protein!!! read more

We had a memorable dinner here a few weeks ago. We requested a table by the window and were seated at one. We ordered cocktails that were recommended by our very attentive and friendly waiter Ricky, and we were very pleased with his recommendations! For dinner we ordered the pesto goat cheese appetizer, which was amazing, but our favorite appetizer was the artichokes. I cannot wait to go back and eat those again. My husband ordered the flat iron steak for dinner and it was perfectly cooked and juicy. We also appreciated that the spinach on his plate was well prepared....I hate when a vegetable on an entree is an after thought and you could tell that was not the case here. I had the linguine with clams, which was light and truly tasted like the sea. My husband ordered the hazelnut gelato and it did not disappoint. Our waiter Ricky was very professional but also funny and personable....we have already made reservations to return in a few weeks and we will be requesting him! However, when we ordered it, even though it was on the menu, they said that they weren't offering bottomless mimosas that day!! WTH? They told us we'd have to purchase a bottle of champagne ($33) and make our own mimosas! So, if you're going there to have bottomless mimosas, better call ahead to make sure they're serving it that day -- especially if it's a special occasion. As an almost 20-year Yelp Elite, and multi-year noir Elite, I can boldly say that nothing else in California comes close to original New England. But I won't stop there. Brunch with my family of extremely picky eaters was a godsend. Everything we had was top notch. From the crustacean eggs Benedict, to the huevos rancheros, fish tacos, and even my virgin Bloody Mary, it was one the best brunch experiences my family has had in a long time. This is the second time I have been served wine that has been turned here. The first time there were apologies and acknowledgment. Tonight there was none. If you are not confident enough to send back bad wine back you may just have to pay for a glass of bad (turned) wine (wine that has been left open too long and gone bad or on the rare occasion has been oxidized before opening.
