Won't get there until after midnight due to Dollar's poor customer service and limited personnel. We had a really good experience with our rental car for our recent trip. The line wasn't too long and while it did take a little while to do everything necessary at the counter, it was relatively quick overall. We had requested a mid-size SUV but they did not have one available so instead they offered us a choice between a Jeep Grand Cherokee or a Jeep Wrangler, which was better for us anyways. Once we got the keys, we were able to get on the road quickly. I also really liked that they included mud/snow tires on all vehicles- this came in handy driving the icefields parkway. We returned our vehicle early in the morning, and the return garage was very crowded. There was only one sign for where to park for dollar, so we parked there and found an employee to check us out. The drop off process was a bit chaotic because of the crowdedness and no signs or employees explaining what we needed to do, but once we found an employee it was a simple checkout and we were on our way. On the third day of our car rental agreement, we found a flat tire upon returning to the parking lot. We notified Dollar, who arranged for someone from Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) to assist us. The Dollar representative informed us there would be no charge for fixing the flat tire if there was no damage to the tire. The CAA mechanic inspected the tire and found no evidence of a puncture or any damage to the tire. In fact, he offered to simply refill it with air rather than putting on the spare tire. We opted to use the spare tire to ensure we would make it to the rental car agency (Calgary Airport). At the time he changed the tire, we observed that the spare tire had obviously been used in the past. The fact that the spare time had been used suggested to us that this car had previously had a flat tire, and that the tire had not been fixed properly or at all. We returned the car for an exchange at the same location it was initially rented from (Calgary Airport). We were told we would be charged if there was damage to the tire. Knowing there was no damage, we took photos of the tire and a video of the tire rolling so all parts of the tire could be seen. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE TIRE. No one from Dollar inspected the tire in our presence, nor did they inform us at any time that there was damage to the tire. In addition, when we returned the replacement car at the end of our trip, no one mentioned any charge for the tire. We only discovered the charge upon receiving a final bill that included DMCHG in the list of charges. The staff at the Dollar agency has never provided any justification or explanation for the DMCHG, and most importantly, nor with any evidence to justify the charge. We disputed the credit card charge for this bill through Dollar and our credit card company. After a long and dragged out process, Dollar refunded the charge. But it was a very difficult and stressful experience. I personally would never rent a car from this particular rental car station. read more

Worst customer service experience ever. The first customer service rep lied to us about the status of our vehicle and kept us waiting for 45 minutes. She then admitted that the vehicle, which I had booked three months ago was simply not available and offered us a pick up truck or a small vehicle neither of which would accommodate our family. She then left the kiosk and kept us waiting for a further 20 minutes. When we asked her colleague (a woman named Nat) where her colleague went, Nat became rude and abusive and threatened to call security. The only person who was helpful was a service rep named Martin and he was finally able to get us a vehicle. The manager Kumar was also helpful in de-escalating. While I understand that the mix up was not the fault of the customer service rep, her dishonesty did nothing to make the situation better. Both she and her colleague Nat became hostile and began shouting when we became frustrated with the delay and dishonesty. Nat also took a picture of something on the computer screen when we were checking out and I I am now concerned that she will use my personal information in some way. Management should address her behaviour and determine whether she is taking customer's private information. read more

I booked my reservation through Orbitz for an economy car. The car rental counter was pretty easy to find with all of the signs all throughout the concourse. It was just me for a short solo weekend through Alberta, so I didn't need a big car. Instead of a small economy or compact car, I was given a midsize Toyota Camry at no additional charge. Taking care of the paperwork was also pretty standard. After that was taken care of, it was off I go! The only thing that I had to get used to was that speed was measured in km/hr and the gas tank was in liters. Coming from the US, I'm used to mph and gallons. :) Returning the car was also pretty quick and simple. read more

I'm updating my review almost as long after my visit as it took to get my car. Eventually we were offered a Tesla which would have been great but we were planning on driving 100's of miles in the remote Canadian Rockies. Soon after, a full size SUV was available which worked well for us. I made sure to have an attendant walk around the vehicle with me and note all the dings and scratches. The interior wasn't dirty but it also wasn't detailed after the previous renter. I'm sure it went through a quick wash and was sent out to us. Other than the extreme delay at pickup and a dirtier than expected vehicle, our experience was good with Dollar Car Rental. The staff were friendly to us even tho they were getting berated by other customers. Maybe I have more patience because I also work in customer service. Anyways, I would probably rent with this company again however if there was a competitor with a similar price I would try them next time. read more

Worst service ever!!!! I traveled to Canada so many times, however this is the first time I had a very bad time with the service! First, the lady in the front desk treated customers very bad! She seems very unhappy to explain more to customers. Second, when the first time I asked for the waiting time, they told me 25 mins. After 30 mins, that lady told me 45 mins, and she claimed that I heard it wrong.... there were 6 customers waiting in the line by the time I double checked the status, and that lady felt not sorry to the customers at all, and keep saying 'see, everyone is waiting' to everyone who waited so long..... by the time I got the car, it's been 100 mins.... Avoid! False advertising. Hidden fees. Poor customer service. I booked online and paid $220 for 7 days. Their email with voucher said "Payable at the counter: $0" When I arrived the attendant said I had to pay a $200 deposit that I would get back once the car was returned. I received that deposit back. However, 6 days later they charged me another $200 of hidden fees which included $140 for winter tires (they put mud and snow tires on the car). Mud and snow tires in Calgary are not good enough for a car that is not 4WD for those conditions. In the end it cost me over $400 instead of the $220 that was advertised. read more

I do not recommend renting here. Returned rental vehicle during normal business hours, but there was no one available to receive the vehicle. There was a sign at return area to return keys to Hertz counter representative. Dollar agent phones me the next day late morning wondering when I was going to return the vehicle?? I responded it was returned the previous day evening. I received the invoice a couple days later with additional charges for "damages". I have informed customer service and requested to provide further details as there was no damage upon return of the vehicle. Still waiting 3+ weeks with no response or proof of why I am being charged for this. I have rented numerous vehicles over the years and never had such a bad experience! read more

the service a received at the Dollar rental car in Calgary Int. Airport was top notice. The service guy named Manu was super helpful and very nice when i returned the car. He helped with unloading my bad and also asked how i was doing and did i have any issues with the car. Beware of being charged for insurance upon return. Details: Upon car pick up, the agent didn't ask if I wanted insurance coverage (I never buy it from the counter and when they ask I always decline). When I went to return the car, they agent gave me a bill. Of course, I thought this was the car rental bill, signed the form and left. When I boarded my plane, I realized I booked with expedia (!00% paid) and that they charged me for insurance and a few other minor charges, airport levy's, taxes, etc. I called the Dollar Rent a Car customer service line and the lady snarkily said 'you signed; you have to pay'. I asked for a manager and she said there was no management and she had 100% authority to decline my request/complaint. Is that the type of business we want to give our money to? I rent twice per month for business. And with all the honest companies that will gladly take my business from you, so long forever. read more

When my 24 y/o son returned his rental car he was charged an addition $120 ($30/day) for being under age 25. This charge was not made clear either on the initial online reservation, or when my son picked up the car, though it apparently was buried in the contract they presented for him to sign. When I called to protest, the manager was extremely unhelpful and uncaring. They said he had signed for it in the contract, though he was unaware of it. Beware of this rental agency. I will never rent from Dollar or their business partners again! The counter assistant was friendly but was overbearing with all of the add-ons she highly suggested (i.e. Road side assistance, insurance, and petro refill charges upon return). Only the GPS offering was taken at a cost of 14.99/day, but it couldn't be used for the return trip unless reprogrammed. The car was filled petro about five miles from the return garage, yet I was charged $3.69 for a refill. Additionally, there was the following hidden charges: Energy Recovery Fee $.88, Vehicle Licensed Air Tax Recovery Fee $12.46 , Premium Location Charge $49.76, Customer Facility Charge $42.00, Goods and Services Tax $20.53. The rental period was for 7 days. The car was only moderately clean and had several scrapes and some body damage, too. Dollar car rentals are underhandedly dishonest. read more

They offer cars that are not set up to drive in our winter climate. If you would like the vehicle winterized you have to pay extra. My vehicle was dirty and the staff did not really care when I brought that to their attention. I'll never rent here again, there's many other companies that appreciate the business read more

This was the WORST experience I have ever had with a rental company. I do not recommend Dollar to ANYONE. Booking online is a SCAM!!!! Expect the price to be double if not more once you get to the counter!!! We arrived at Calgary airport at about 11pm and were so excited to hit to road to go to Banff for 7 days. When I booked online, I wrote my date of birth and mentioned that I am 24 years old and NO WHERE did it mention that you cannot rent an SUV and have to pay 30$ extra PER DAY to rent a regular size car PLUS another 30$ PER DAY for winter tires when OBVIOUSLY It is snowing and driving in Alberta (snow tired should not even be an option) PLUS another 30$ PER DAY for insurance. My car rental that was supposed to be 220$ was now 850$ and tje lady at the counter was smiling and acting like this was OK!!!!!! I asked if a discount could be applied since this is not what we booked for at all and her manager said she would apply 10% on the RENTAL! Leaving us still in the 800$s!!! Not even for an SUV when we had skis and luggage. I've rented MANY cars in Montreal with enterprise and I've never experienced ANYTHING like this. The staff was HORRIBLE and made me cry! What a horrible beginning to my trip. Thankfully, the National counter was open and the man told us to go see him and made us a super deal at 350$ for an SUV and 4 season tires.
