I have just had the worst experience with a car rental ever. I coordinated a reservation for a family member and paid for the rental. Once the family member presented for pickup, he was denied and now I cannot speak to anyone to obtain a refund. There is no way to speak to a real person. I have no idea what recourse I have and I live in another state, 9 hours away. It is not much money, but I aim going to seek legal advice as to my rights. This is ridiculous and unprofessional. In short, This is definitely way way way worse than the worst business I've ever experienced Rethink a million times before you click on dollar rental! I bet you will regret it. They charge you extra nonsense fees two months later without your consent, such as toll administration fees which could be 10x bigger than your toll fees. They would never let you that before you rent the vehicle, or even after you return the vehicle and pay the bill. They will simply quietly hide this and let the third party company send you the bill for hundreds of dollars of fees that you are not even aware of. Stay away from this asssss hole biz. We were very leery about renting from this location due to all the bad reviews, however we were equally attracted by the great price and convenience. The woman (I wish I remembered her name) who helped us was a machine... simply awesome. She handled everybody in the office in a great way, and got us out the door pretty much on schedule. The only reason I gave four stars instead of five is because we had some concerns with the car. About halfway down to NC the oil and filter alerts started flashing every time we turned on the car. This was a big pain until we found the button to turn them off. My bigger issue was the vibration caused from a bad tire alignment. It was okay on the way down South because we were taking less highways, but it still concerned me. We shared this with the national rep on the way down and they said this had to be resolved by the location where we rented the vehicle. My GF called the Newport Centre location and they said the car repair history was clear and that there should be no concern. She didn't mention the alignment because it wasn't vibrating too bad, and we had already told the national rep. We made it to our destination safely with no issues. On the way back we gave ourselves ten hours to complete an eight hour trip with breaks. The first couple of hours were in the back roads so the car's alignment was just fine. Then we hit I-95 and had open road up until DC. We made great time initially but even going with the flow of traffic the car began to shake due to the alignment. We tried calling the national number and local number but both were closed. Out of concern for having a blowout or otherwise losing control of the car we decided to go slower and not try to rush back. Our car was supposed to be in by 7pm and we got it in at 7:43pm. I didn't want us to get stuck with another day's charge so I called the next day to confirm what we were billed. When the guy answered, I started with a quick rundown of what happened and he basically cut me off to say that we were only charged for the four days. I expected a headache conversation and to be billed an extra day for being 43 minutes late, but instead I got a great rental experience even with the car issues! read more

I rented from Thrifty / Dollar this past week in Denver CO and it was horrible. The line to get the car took forever and the workers were not rude but not pleasant. The Car choices were only 3 and not good at that. The car ran fine no issues there , i did not like how there was a 150miles per day that seemed a bit silly. When I returned the car i was over charged due to miles which was not the case they said i drove over 3K miles when i only drove about 250miles so i was even under for the time i rented the car. My Charges came out to be over $1400.00 when i was told it should only have been about 200. I had to go talk to customer service inside and the manager while this needed to be looked over no one said sorry about this issue an nor did they explain to me what they were doing or going to do. After finally asking about the credit to my card about 3 times they showed me their screen and said oh yes we will credit you back the amount in 2-3 business days and it will come out to the correct price. So I waited about a week and there is currently no credit pending at all and i am unable to get anyone on customer service to speak to me and now i have had to mark this as a fradulent charge with my credit card company. I am very displeased. Note : when i used Dollar Rental in West Palm Beach FL it was nothing but GREAT GREAT cars to pick from , friendly employees and amazing service they went above and beyond at that location and explained all the details to me. I was pleased with the staff in this location. Just use another car company though...try Enterprise never had any issues with them. read more

I would give zero stars if I could. I reserved a compact car a liitle over a month ago. I have my reservation confirm via email and all. I was to pick up the car on 5/20 at noon. I was called at about 11:15am by this dollar location in the Newport Mall parking deck, and told that there were inventory issues. I wonder how when I made the reservation over a month in advance. I was told they close at 1pm & I would be called within the hour to come pick up the car as they were searching for inventory. I never received a call. I have no explanation via email or anything. I am sure their corporate offices care about how the locations are run. They will be hearing about this. Never again will I use them for personal reasons or business. read more

I had a horrible experience with this location. I rented a car during memorial weekend and I returned the car on the right day and left the keys on the drop off safe box as I was told. I placed the parking ticket on the dash and I made sure it was there. Two days later i got a message on my cell saying they couldn't find the ticket and they charged me 2 more days. Please do NOT rent at this location. Customer service is horrible and they just want to find excuses to charge you more. After I submitted my complain to Dollar along with my air ticket proving I left the car on the right day, I am still waiting for and answer. Very very bad experience :((( read more

If you really dislike someone rent them a car from this location as the office sits in a corner of a dark parking garage. I was fully anticipating having my throat slashed and left for dead amongst the rental cars. When I entered the office the girl insisted I send her a copy of my prepaid insurance and would not let me leave without sending it to her which is something I found to be incredibly inconvenient at that time. Then, she called me while I was out driving the car asking if I was going to take the car back on the assigned day and time. I got totally hassled. Update: This place tried to charge me for an extra day! I handed the keys to the Dollar Agent and the car resides in a parking garage which requires you to pick up a time stamped ticket, plus they inventory their cars every night so there was no excuse to make a "mistake". So make sure you check your credit card statement after visiting this place as other renters have reported similar problems. read more

My husband and I have trekked from Brooklyn to rent from this location for a last minute family emergency, and had fine, courteous service (the reason it's two stars, not one). However, when renting in December (picking up a reservation we made in October) we were treated rudely by the sole person working and surprised with non-disclosed fees. To add insult to injury, we are now discovering more, erroneous charges on our credit card. We reached out to the company multiple times and have received no assistance or explanation. read more

I have rented from this location a few times before and have always had courteous helpful service. The key drop off box is helpful in that you can drop off whenever you feel like. The savings vs Manhattan rentals is wonderful and They don't pressure you as other car rentals places do to purchase their collision insurance (which I am covered by my cc card). So far so good. Do NOT rent from here. I rented a car here with full insurance and returned it on the day agreed upon. I received a call a couple days later that they could not find my keys to which I told them that I placed them in the dropbox as instructed and they could verify via security cameras. I received calls from corporate afterwards and each time had to explain the same situation to them to which they said they would look into it. No contact and then the bill was 2.5x the quoted price. I kept calling to figure out why since I did everything asked but just silence and meaningless words since then. They said they would call to discuss but that never happened either. I'll leave it to my bank to sort this mess and make sure to never rent from here again. Looks like numerous people below had the same problems. Shame since it's so close but there are plenty of other better alternatives. read more

We had a horrible experience and was extremely late to where we had to go as a result. One other point, which will raise my previous score from one to two stars.. This was the worst car rental in my entire life. The service was extremely slow (two persons served three customers in one hour). The car was high mileage (50k miles) but seemed at first in a reasonable condition... until I realize the power outlet is not working, leaving me with no idea where to go, lost in the mountains after my GPS battery died. I have contacted the customer service which was rude, only to be told they will investigate before disappearing. After another email, and a month later, I finally got apologies but they told me there is nothing they can do; I had to go deal with the rental location. I just gave up :) My two cents: don't try to save a few bucks and rent a car from a good company (there are plenty in Jersey City). read more

I rented from this location because it is less expensive than the city. My reservation was made for two days online the night before for picking up the car. The staff was friendly that morning, calling to ensure that I was coming and flexible when my arrival was delayed. When we got there, we had to speak up to be served after sitting for almost 10 minutes. There was a long wait for the car to be "cleaned," but whatever - I wasn't on time. However, the car was not 100% clean; the backseat had a bit of dirt along the seats. My party left, and went on our way for the weekend. I returned the car the following evening, neglecting to place the parking ticket (tip: make sure you return your ticket from the garage) on the dash. That incurred a $25 fee, which had not been explained to me beforehand. I received a call this morning asking for the ticket (poor process: I had dropped off the car and returned the keys already) or I would be charged for the rental through today. They gave me the option of e-mailing an image of the ticket, which was stamped with the wrong time. It noted that I returned the car in the morning when, as before mentioned, it had been returned during the evening. Also, Dollar claimed that I only had a one day reservation, when in fact I had made it clear verbally and with my online reservation that it was not the case. It was not a 100% terrible experience overall, but definitely not a good one. IF YOU LIVE IN NYC IT IS WORTH PAYING EXTRA MONEY FOR ZIPCAR. Dollar Rent a Car is not recommended - I've rented cars at many places, and this experience was sub par. They aren't going to win repeat customers if they do not change how they operate. read more

This location is very convenient for me as I live in Brooklyn, NY and it only takes me 45 minutes to catch the F train to the PATH train to Newport. I rent from here a couple of times every year, always quick, always friendly counter people at pick-up with vehicle choices and quick returns. I always book on a 3rd party website for the best rates with unlimited miles at about $14-$16 a a day. I'm not sure why people report having unfavorable experiences. They gave me a really nice looking black sedan, but I changed it for a little Teal Toyota Yaris so I could find parking in Brooklyn before heading south, I did about 600 miles and only filled it up twice.This time I even called the 800 number and in 5 minutes they extended my rental a few days at the same rate I booked it at.... Just remember they are closed on Sundays and take a picture of your parking pass when dropping off your vehicle after hours. That's the only knock, they mistakenly charged me an extra day due to the Sunday drop off thing, but I called in the 800 number and resolved the error quickly. read more

Rented a small car over the weekend due to out-of-town trip. Very reasonably priced location. Easy to get to from Manhattan via the NJ Path Train - Newport / Pavonia stop (this stop is right across from Newport Mall). The Rental office itself is in the Mall Parking Lot (not inside the mall). Lots of cabs available across the mall too. I declined their insurance and it was no problem. Though they charged me a couple bucks more than the quoted price online, since according to them a license fee wasn't listed in the quote ...but that wasn't a big deal. Car we got was clean and in good condition. People behind the counter were pleasant. A pretty straightforward rental that was well-priced. read more
