So, so bad. Avoid at all costs! I booked through Expedia, and got my receipt that said all mandatory taxes and fees were paid. I dutifully took care of the car and filled up the tank before returning. But Dollar decided to charge me 50% on top of what I already paid for the booking, and included extra coverages I declined, plus a range of fees and taxes. Good luck calling their customer service number; you can only fill out an online form whose link is broken half the time, and there has been no response. So, I have some advice for people in regards to tolls specifically from Dollar as they have one of the biggest fees for each toll that gets paid through the plate. We had enough time on our road trip to avoid tolls but sometimes you might just not be able to. The first thing I'd try is paying for the toll through an app. Just look and see if you can find one that'll work for your device or have cash readily available to pay tolls if you can. If not do the math, every toll has a $15.00 fee from dollar....I know, even if the toll is $1.00 they will charge you a $15 admin fee per toll. I believe if you pay for the plate pass it's $59.00 or $60 for unlimited tolls, which might be a good idea if you wanna be hassle free and not worry. Just add it when you pick up the car, can't add it later. We picked up our car from Portland, ME and drove through Portsmouth, Salem and to Boston avoiding tolls except one which we were able to pay with cash. From downtown Boston we took the 20 min route to avoid the toll to the rental car drop off by Logan Airport. Otherwise go and check out some other car rental companies to see what they charge for tolls. Just know I am writing this to give people a heads up. I do have to agree it's highway robbery the amount dollar charges for the toll fees. Rented a car last month. Filled the car just before i returned it just down the road and drop it off. They said everything was ok. I get my credit card bill and I have a $195.52 extra fuel and service fee. They say send the gas slip in and they will reimburse me??? I file complaint on credit card. The car was clean, full of gas and had no damage and they checked it and then flim flamed me. I am taking this to the Attorney General's Office! Use Avis or someone else everybody! Pickup at this location was a nightmare. There was a very long line which moved very slowly. Most people were in line for over an hour and 1/2. Out of 3 people at the counter, only one person was fast and efficient. If the other two people were that efficient, a long line would not have been such a problem. Two people handled 2 customers each in an hour, while the 3rd handled at least 10. DO NOT RENT FROM HERE! It is not worth the frustration. Got a car that broke down within 1 hour of driving. Started making a strange repetitive thumping noise. The car gets towed, I found alternate transportation. At the end of my trip, speak with Jeff the manager asking for a partial refund. No refund offered, but he'll send me an email to get 2 free days. No email ever shows up. Now for the really fun part. After I leave, I get hit with an $878 charge from them, even though I prepaid for the rental weeks in advance. Clicking around their website I find a receipt that claims I returned the car 1100 miles away in North Carolina! The fee breakdown is absurd. Random "service charge" of $400. Includes a fuel fee... Please explain how I can top off the gas tank when your car breaks down? Line item of "10% tax" that equaled $169. Must be a new form of math where 10% of a bill less than $1000 is somehow over $100. BEWARE OF TOLL ISSUES. Wish I'd read all of the below reviews prior to renting. We were told it would be $15 for the toll pass. Figured it would be worth it to not have the hassle of paying cash for the tolls. It's $15 PER DAY! We probably spent about $6-7 in tolls going from Portland to Boston and I was charged $75. This is a predatory rental agency- I strongly recommend you look elsewhere for your car rental. I rented a car from them in May and specifically asked if I needed to rent a toll pass for my drive from Maine to Boston. I was told not to worry about it and that the tolls would be billed to me when they processed with the state. This is a fairly standard practice for billing on rental cars so I thought nothing of it until I received a bill for my tolls with an additional $15 "administrative fee" attached to every toll. Suddenly my charges went from less than $7 to over $50. I called the fee management company and was disturbed when they informed me that "they shouldn't have said that to you" and proceeded to offer me 50% off my bill but told me they couldn't offer anything else as the system is controlled by dollar rental. This is a disgusting practice and clearly they have set up a system where there is essentially no way to contest this fee. Clearly I should have read the yelp reviews as I am not the first to have been duped by dollar. Hopefully you'll find this one early enough to go with a different company- personally I recommend Enterprise. Horrific- wish I could give 0 stars. read more

Not a fan! We had to return the rental car 2 days early due to some unforeseen issues with Canadian Border entry AND no hotel availability near the Portland ME area due to the Columbus Day holiday weekend. The Canadian hotels were kind enough to refund our hotel payments, Delta Airlines booked us back to Atlanta with no extra fees, but Dollar Car Rental charged us EXTRA to return our car 2 days early!! I have emailed Dollar, spoken with their hq office, but cannot get in touch with Dollar Rental counter at the Portland ME airport.. bad customer service for sure!! read more

I was very impressed by the speed and helpfulness of the staff. We arrived a little bit early for our rental pick up time but we did not have to wait. A simple handing of my license and swiping of my credit card and a few questions about the car and features and we were off. The transaction literally took less than 10 minutes. They explained how to use the EzPass and it was so simple to use. We had the car for a week and upon return it was still a very simple and easy process. Pulled the car into the spot and took our luggage out. Gave them the keys and off we were back home. read more

They are the absolute worse rental car company I have ever dealt with in my entire life! After we had a minor accident that damaged the bumper, they charged astronomical fees for loss of use. They sent the repair charges and the vehicle was in the shop for 6 hours, yet they charged me hundreds of dollars for days of repairs. My insurance company refused to pay stating it was a scam. When I raised the issues with them, they threatened to send me to collections, were unprofessional and unworkable. They refuse to compromise and make demands that are not in the contract. Booked a car for 5 days. Rental agreement said $110/day or $790/wk. When arrived at destination airport, no Dollar rep on duty. Hertz guy got us our car. No discussion of rate. Returned car on time after 5 days. Dollar charged us for the weekly rate. So instead of a $550 rental rate, they charged $790. Note that the weekly rate is more than 7 times the daily rate (perhaps the new math). Dollar rep said that 5 days is a week, sure if you want to double rent the car for 2 days. Of course I could not find this absurd definition of a week anywhere on the web under the Rental Rates section of the General requirements for Dollar rental. We were overcharged $240 by this scam. Only one agent working on Saturday afternoon during high tourist season. Got in line with at least 12 people ahead of me. Took over 1.5 hours to get to the desk. Instead of making people wait in line why don't they give everyone a number so they can sit down in the room waiting. Many of the people waiting are seniors. I'm 70 years old and lucky I didn't have to go to the bathroom while waiting. Hertz/Dollar has poor customer service. Use another company. I travel a lot for work and fun, so I've experienced the gauntlet with regards to rental car companies. Enterprise, Hertz, Budget, National, Alamo, Dollar. My recent experience with Dollar Rent-a-Car was horrific. I was in Maine for a 4 week period for work, and we had two cars that were rented through Dollar at the Portland airport. To start off, when we arrived they didn't have cars for us - we patiently waited while they borrowed cars from Hertz and then we went on our way. At first the cars seemed great and despite getting a not so great start with Dollar, I figured that was it and we'd return the cars at the end of our trip. Oh, was I wrong. It started first with a phone call asking for the VIN# and other vehicle information for one of the cars because they had no record of what car we had. It got progressively worse. We were in a remote area, working 12 hour days, 7 days a week, and we got a flat tire. Not a problem, simply changing it, right? Nope. Someone had previously used the hitch on the car and pulled it so that we were unable to get the spare tire out. After talking with Dollar endlessly, they finally agreed to send a local mechanic out to fix the problem. While they were able to get the spare out, and onto our vehicle, they couldn't get the other tire (which was unpatchable) back where the spare had been so we simply had to keep it in our trunk. We then had to explain to Dollar that we would be out on the project for the next 3 weeks and needed to have a spare. Their response? Too bad. After much discussion, Dollar said that we could drive over an hour to the closest town with a tire shop, buy a new tire, and that they would reimburse us (we've yet to see if this reimbursement has happened). While extremely inconvenient since it meant that we had to leave the project site early one day, we didn't have much of a choice. Fastforward a few days, and what do you know...another flat. Different tire this time. (Apparently the tires were just slightly overinflated). Went through the same deal with Dollar. This time they were a little bit better and said they would call the tire shop and pay for it themselves, but we would still have to drive the 75 minutes each way to take the car in, thus taking out of our work day. As if things couldn't get any worse, we then had a bad rain storm driving back from the coast and when I went to put the windshield wipers on they didn't work. Well, they worked in that they moved side to side, but driving with them on actually made seeing through the windshield worse. And this was the other car now! The final nail in the coffin was another flat (this time in the windshield wiper car). Wouldn't have been a problem, except that the jack we had with the vehicle wouldn't lift the vehicle high enough to get the tire off. Dollar was far from helpful with this issue, but we luckily solved it with the mechanic shop at our project site - they had a jack that was able to lift our car, and they were able to plug the hole in the tire. Needless to say, this experience with Dollar was horrific and I will never use them again. After speaking with approximately 5 people from their customer service department, I can honestly say that only one person (Chris, in road-side assistance) was nice and helpful. Clearly the name Dollar is representative of their vehicles and customer service. read more

I rented a car for 2 days for $60 or something. I later got toll bills for over $150 without being able to get any help to address this. I went through tolls in NH but thought with the EZ pass would be charged just what the toll was not $150--but this is a rip off and I will never, ever rent from Dollar again. Dollar claims they can't do anything about it -- but it's their system that has these exorbitant costs. They make money off this policy and it is terrible customer service. read more

I'm sorry there is no option for a zero star rating. Do not EVER rent a car from Dollar, at least at the Portland Maine airport. Earlier on the day of my flight, I called directly to the Portland Dollar phone number, and asked about late arrivals since I was originally supposed to arrive around 11:40 pm. He told me they were open 24 hours. This is a BIG FAT LIE. My flight was delayed for several hours out of Detroit, which was bad enough, getting me to Portland in the wee hours of the morning. When I arrived at the Dollar counter, there was nobody there. When I called Dollar, they told me basically "so sorry but we don't care." I ended up having to pay for another rental car which WAS open. This makes me so flaming mad I will be telling everyone I know about this lack of service and will also contact Clark Howard at clarkhoward.com Update: at the end of my trip I stopped at the Dollar booth where the woman behind the counter said I would NOT be charged, that since I wasn't there at the reserved time, I was considered a no-show and there is no charge for that. I have consistently used Dollar for my rentals because of their competitive pricing, and their vehicles have been in relatively pristine condition. This trip was no different. Our connection flight was arriving later than we had planned, which means we would miss the window for pickup. However after a phone call with the agent and a brief hold Dollar made arrangements with a sister rental dealer with longer hours to hold our vehicle for us when we arrived. Once we got to the desk the rental was swift and efficient, and after less than 5 minutes at the counter to pay and get the keys I was pleasantly surprised to see they had upgraded my car without an additional charge. Service was excellent and the car was great (SUV instead of a standard car which helped with some of the longer drives we were doing...hope I don't get anyone in trouble for the free upgrade). I will definitely use Dollar again in the future. read more
