I am leaving this review after a 6-month reflection period to warn future South Asian and olive-skinned clients. I was booked with this salon for an Indian wedding event, and the service was a complete failure for the last event when a new artist subbed in. The artist demonstrated zero training in color theory for olive skin tones, applying a foundation that was completely mismatched, pale, and gray/ashy. When the mismatch was brought to her attention on-site, she first refused to acknowledge it and then couldn't correct it, causing me to miss the scheduled professional photography windows.When I contacted the salon owner later with clear, side-by-side photographic evidence comparing their work to a correct shade match from a prior event / artist, the owner attempted to blame our timeline and completely stopped responding. They will gladly accept high-paying South Asian event bookings but lack the skills, product kits, and customer service to back it up. If you have olive skin, do not risk your major events here. Uploading this is uncomfortable because it does not represent how I look, but I am sharing it to ensure no other South Asian woman goes through this. I wholeheartedly do NOT recommend Lulu unless you want the risk of her cancelling 9 days before your wedding for her "friend's wedding" (not an emergency). On top of this she did not respond to multiple emails asking for a trial. Looking back, I'm sure she double booked months in advance knowing she would cancel on me last minute and that's why she wasn't responding to my emails. I booked her 1.5 years out even before I picked my venue. She offered me her associates instead and said she could throw in a free trial (can I really trust the work based on just 1 trial for 5 different events with different looks? So unrealistic. I hired Dolled up by Lulu and not Dolled up by her Associates lol) I have heard she has cancelled on multiple other brides as well and I would not want any other bride to go through this. Would honestly rate negative stars if I could. The absolute worst most unprofessional service we've ever experienced. My wife booked Lulu for our wedding a year and a half in advance. She knew for a long time that she only wanted her makeup done by Lulu and literally planned our dates around her availability. From the start something didn't seem right with the way she was so unresponsive to any messages. My wife wanted to set up a trial and messaged her multiple times with no response. Obviously concerning but we just thought she was busy and figured she had such a good reputation that it would be fine. Then basically a week and a half before the wedding she sends an email to my wife saying that her friend decided to elope to Europe early and she was gonna go to her friend's wedding and couldn't make ours. Didn't even have the courage to call us or speak to us over the phone. Incredibly convenient that she was so unresponsive about doing the trial and then this just happened to come up... almost like she knew she was going to pull this months in advance. So yeah, if you want to hire somebody who will bail on you at the last second with a half hearted apology (she honestly could care less) and somebody who clearly doesn't care how she treats her clients or her business then Lulu is the person for you. Best decision I made for my wedding! Lulu's prices were a bit higher than others I was looking for PLUS I had to fly her in because my wedding was outside of CA. Hence I was consistently wondering - was it worth the splurge? The answer is wholeheartedly yes! She knew I really liked minimal makeup and made sure I loved every one of my makeup looks. Do not recommend hiring Dolled Up By LuLu's team, particularly if you have hair with texture (curly, wavy, you name it) or a lot of hair. (My hair is super easy to work with and holds styles! Yet the team messed it up). First, LuLu only offered like two people without giving me options for other artists. I had to suggest and ask for another makeup artist who did my friends makeup. I had to gamble on hair with Katie Frances hairbykatefrances which was a big mistake. Katie Frances did my hair for two events, and I highly regret hiring her. For both events, I had specifically given pictures of waves. No pictures show tight curls. In both events, she created ringlets that ALL went the same way, did not brush them out, overly teased my hair. So no matter what happened, they kept re-clumping together. I'm still so upset looking at my photos, my hair looks like a girly child's hair. In one event, I asked for what was supposed to be waves and up-do part to be separated so it wouldn't look so one-dimensional, and she barely separated them with a pin comb and acted as if that was supposed to last hours of photos and dancing. For the first event, I had my doubts but wanted to trust she knew what she was doing. For the other event, I came back to her an hour later for fixing my hair after looking in a mirror and realizing it was nothing like I asked (I asked for large beach waves/Hollywood waves and she gave tight curls all curled in the same direction) and asked her to loosen it and at minimum alternate curls so it wouldn't all clump together. I specifically said I did not want curls. She barely to fix it, STILL did not brush out the curls, and whatever she did ended up being a huge mess. My hair looks terrible in all the photos. I wanted to spend more time fixing it myself since she clearly didn't do what was asked, but the tradeoff was going for the sunset photo shoot we planned the whole day around and wasting thousands on photographer costs or getting a bad hair artist to fix my hair. So hiring her will stress you out and waste money. I was so exhausted from being sick before the wedding, not getting enough sleep, and wanted to be able to trust my vendors to do what I asked. I wanted to sit in the chair and rest between events. Unfortunately I now know that Katie requires hand-holding and to be told exactly what to do despite being the hair professional. Most of us brides are not hair professionals ; that is why we hire one. The worst of is is that she could've just asked questions and all of this sadness could've been avoided. She didn't do what I asked, didn't bother asking questions, and barely spoke unless spoken to. This is not an ideal environment or results for a bride, especially since one room we were getting ready in didn't even have a mirror. I brought this up with LuLu and she stated that they want to do better for their curly haired clients (respectable), but I was not offered a refund. She offered to do my hair at a future time, which doesn't really make sense given that I live across the country, am not someone who needs to randomly get professional hair done for the hell of it. In the unforeseeable instance I'd need to get hair done, I do not think it'd ever be worth traveling across Southern California for. Meanwhile, Catrina Cims did my makeup and did a decent job - she understood the vibes I wanted, asked questions, and even provided advice on lip color and eyeshadow. Importantly, she was so so kind! I booked Lulu's team for my brother's Indian wedding on the March 25th here in DTLA, and I must say they were extremely professional and friendly to everyone. Me being the "best man"/past-organiser of the whole thing, I had to keep running around on the day of the wedding but I found it really, really helpful that they were very communicative, helping me and everyone on both sides of the family be on the same page with who's getting what and at what time. I must say, that the Indian side (my side) of the family were a bit uncertain as to how theirs and the bride's hair would turn out -- if it would look any bit close to how hair would be done in Indian weddings. I can't even put into words how wonderfully talented Lulu is....but I'm going to try! To start from the beginning, I decided pretty last minute that I wanted to do an engagement shoot, so contacted Dolled up by Lulu, on a whim, to see if she would be available. I knew it was a long shot, because I was trying to book less than a week out, but by some miracle, she was!!! Lulu was prompt if not early at arriving at our 12pm appt, which was great. She messaged me to tell me that she was on her way and gave me an ETA. After looking through her work, I fully trusted her the entire session. ***BRIDES BE AWARE*** I usually don't write reviews but the experience I had with Lulu was so unprofessional and unethical that I don't want any bride to go through what I went through. Lulu was the first vendor I had booked as soon as my wedding date was finalized - which was one year out. I was so excited to have her do my HAMU. However, as soon as our contract was finalized, she stopped replying to my texts or emails. Months before the wedding, my planner and I would text/call/email her weekly with no responses. Two weeks out of my wedding date -she told me that she would only be able to make it for 2 of my events since she had overbooked with another client and won't be able to make the flight. I was really frustrated since I had booked her a year out for all my events. I let it pass since I had no other choice. At this time, she still hadn't shared her flight details - even after asking for it multiple times. I was getting worried -but my planner reassured me that she has never had a HAMU artist cancelled on a bride. One week out - still no updates on flight details and no responses to messages. Three days out -she text messages my planner that she had a family emergency and won't be able to come. My planner tries to get in touch with her but she doesn't pick up. She messages saying only one assistant will come to do my HAMU, who was originally supposed to do my mom. So now, I had to find someone from my mom as well. The part that upsets me the most is that Lulu didn't even have the audacity to call me directly. I get it - life happens. But she couldn't take 2 mins out to call me and tell me directly. Also, I find out later from the assistant that Lulu had told her she wasn't going to make it the weekend prior. So she knew and didn't inform us until much later. Brides just be aware - I never thought this would happen to me. If it happens once - it can happen again. Here's another review of someone else going through a similar experience with Lulu: "I've been debating writing this review for over a year now but I have decided to share my experience with others so they're aware. I had hired Lulu and her team for my wedding day well in advance. I had several events leading up to my wedding and hired other mua's for events to try them all out. Two weeks before my wedding, I had an event and the MUA asked me if I had confirmed everything with Lulu recently so I decided to email her and received no response, the mua was kind enough to give me lulus personal phone number (which lulu never did) and she responded confirming a week before. Another mua just days before my wedding told me she doesn't think Lulu will show up and I should have a backup. I truly didn't think that was possible since she had just confirmed with me. Now, imagine how I felt when I recieved an email the night before my wedding at 10 pm that she would not be able to make it. Me and my entire family started flipping out and contacting every mua in all of Southern California. I Lulu told me she had taken a trip to India to attend a friends wedding and got stuck there due to protests against the government. I know that's a rare situation but I also know that she would have known far sooner she was unable to make it as the trip back is about 24 hours so I could have known earlier (I also thought it was irresponsible to book a flight back the day before a client wedding). She had offered a replacement for her but when I looked up that mua she hadn't done a south Asian bride at all. I debated posting a review because this situation was so rare but it's been a year and it took me so long to realize how unprofessional she was. Sadly, Lulu herself wasn't available for my wedding date (VERY sadly ... have you seen her Instagram? SHE'S AMAZING!) but she sent a legit ALL STAR team! Our makeup artists and hair stylists were clearly experienced and extremely professional. Janet was my hair stylist. I was lucky enough to keep in contact with her from my hair trial in January all the way up until my wedding in August. She was able to give me great tips and hair advice and even let me visit her salon for coloring and cuts leading up until my wedding day - it was great because she really got to know my hair type and what type of look I was going for. On the day of, she worked as a double threat, doing both makeup and hair for my bridesmaids and makeup for my mom. Janet is super sweet and so amazingly talented. Denise was my makeup artist and also did makeup for a few of my bridesmaids and Matron of Honor - all I can say is WOW. Denise is hands down the best. My Matron of Honor was the first to have her makeup done and she was STUNNING. My usually very oily, large pore skin doesn't hold makeup very well, but Denise worked her magic and was able to matte my skin and make it last all night - I received tons of compliments. Katie styled hair for almost all my bridesmaids and my mom. She did such a beautiful job transforming everyone's hair. I wish I was able to book Lulu for my wedding, but darn it, she was already booked on my date. My advice is that as soon as you can confirm your venue, look no further and book Lulu immediately. Try to get her a year in advance if possible, that's how busy she is! No need to look anywhere else, she is THAT amazing! Don't be wary that she only has 30-ish reviews so far on Yelp, go to her Instagram page to see more evidence of her work. Fortunately, I was able to have Lulu for my weekday engagement photo shoot so that was some consolation at least. (I already booked another hair/makeup artist and glam team for my upcoming wedding after I found out that Lulu was booked, and my first trial with this person isn't until next month. Due to my engagement shoot being on a weekday, this person wasn't able to do my engagement shoot which is why I opted to go with Lulu. Otherwise, it's best to do everything with the same hair/makeup artist)! What can I say about Lulu is that her skills are top notch. It may seem that the majority of her clientele are Indian women, but she serves everyone of all backgrounds. Not only is she warm, down to earth, and authentic, but she instantly makes you feel comfortable. I showed her a couple of photos that I had printed in color of half-up/half-down hairstyles and makeup that I wanted and after a few flip-throughs, she says, "Okay, yup, I know exactly what you're going for." And I was of course a little skeptical but all I said was "Okay then, if you know what to do..." She immediately started putting eyeshadow on my lids and I have to admit that I mentally thought, "What, no eyeshadow primer first??" But I didn't say anything because I wanted to let her do her thing, and that if I needed any corrections, I would tell her afterward. After about 2.5 hours of sitting in her chair and girl-talking about men and relationships, Lulu says to me, "I can't wait for you to see how you look!" and she turns me around and I see myself for the first time in the mirror....And I was completely BLOWN AWAY by the results!! I've gotten my makeup done before at the MAC store, as well as at department makeup counters and at Sephora, and I would also say that my makeup skills are on the more competent side, but what Lulu did to my face and hair was a grade A level above what I've ever experienced thus far. She gave me exactly what I wanted and more, and I never felt or looked more beautiful than on that day. There wasn't a thing that I wanted her to improve - my makeup was soft but dramatic and simply flawless. My hair was intricately styled and what I really liked was how she pinned my hair clip - I would have pinned it in straight, but Lulu is so detail-oriented that she pinned it in like a wave and that looked so much better; it didn't even occur to me to do it that way. That little detail above everything else impressed me most because I myself am detailed-oriented and I love it when other people are too. My engagement shoot was about 6 hours long at various Orange County locations including the beach and here's the kicker - my hair and makeup stayed the ENTIRE time. I hardly ever needed to touch up and by the end of the night, I was so dead tired but I didn't want to take my makeup off, that's how good it still looked. And after all that sun, wind, and surf, my makeup was still "permanent-looking" and I kept marveling at how "airbrushed" my face still looked at the end of the night. Even our engagement shoot photographer, Justin Lin, of Lin and Jirsa (which was the first time meeting him in person) said to me right from the get go, "Did Lulu do your makeup?" without me even prompting him and I was like, "YES! How did you know?!?" and he replied, "I know her work well, she has this way of making people look flawless." And I was so amazed that he knew! In essence, book Lulu if you can. You will not regret it. She is phenomenal at what she does and you'll know that you're in great hands. Wow - Rocky and Rosie did an amazing job on my hair & make-up for my engagement photos and then for my Sangeet, Wedding and Reception. They were on time, professional, friendly, and so talented! I felt immediately comfortable with them and they did a great job of creating the look I was going for. I don't wear much make-up and like my hair to be down a lot so I was worried how I'd do with bridal hair/make-up but the girls were great and helped me look and feel amazing. I got married 19 days ago and I still can't stop gushing about how amazing Lulu and her team were. Lulu was sweet, professional, and most importantly, she made me feel the prettiest that I have ever felt - perfect for the big day! She offered advice and honestly, I was more than happy to defer to any and all of her suggestions. She is the makeup master and I could not be happier that she was my hair and makeup person - if I could, I would have her glam me up every day for how amazing I felt! I was given advice that when booking vendors for your wedding, book your venue then your makeup artist. I wish I had listened to that advice! I inquired for Lulu's services 8 months in advance of my wedding and found she was booked! And I am not even in the heart of wedding season. I did decide to do the trial with Janet and booked Janet for the wedding. Janet was beyond amazing. She has done many Indian weddings so she was quite familiar with the nuances of Indian wedding hair and makeup. I was told by many friends and strangers that my trial makeup was on point. So that made me confident that I was in good hands. Sometimes, a makeup artist knows what will look good on your features, more than you might. When I needed hair/makeup for my bridesmaids and family, I inquired again for her assistants to help out. I had some changes in my quantity but Lulu's team was very flexible in making it work. They showed up on time and stayed patient with us when we asked questions and with interruptions from our photo/video and coordinators. My wedding and reception looks were beyond amazing. I've been debating writing this review for over a year now but I have decided to share my experience with others so they're aware. I had hired Lulu and her team for my wedding day well in advance. I had several events leading up to my wedding and hired other mua's for events to try them all out. Two weeks before my wedding, I had an event and the MUA asked me if I had confirmed everything with Lulu recently so I decided to email her and received no response, the mua was kind enough to give me lulus personal phone number (which lulu never did) and she responded confirming a week before. Another mua just days before my wedding told me she doesn't think Lulu will show up and I should have a backup. I truly didn't think that was possible since she had just confirmed with me. Now, imagine how I felt when I recieved an email the night before my wedding at 10 pm that she would not be able to make it. Me and my entire family started flipping out and contacting every mua in all of Southern California. I Lulu told me she had taken a trip to India to attend a friends wedding and got stuck there due to protests against the government. I know that's a rare situation but I also know that she would have known far sooner she was unable to make it as the trip back is about 24 hours so I could have known earlier (I also thought it was irresponsible to book a flight back the day before a client wedding). She had offered a replacement for her but when I looked up that mua she hadn't done a south Asian bride at all. I debated posting a review because this situation was so rare but it's been a year and it took me so long to realize how unprofessional she was. Even her team was confused and shocked when we told them! There was little to no communication and I stayed up till 4 am on my wedding day confirming a different MUA. So yeah just beware of unreliable MUA's! read more

I'm so glad I picked Lulu for my wedding day! Hair/makeup is a huge part of a bride's big day, and Lulu made sure everything went smoothly. Even with conflict with a no show of an aunt/family, she handled it very calmy and swiftly. She was probably my favorite vendor-- pricey, but she knows what she's doing! Days before the wedding, a different vendor expressed concerns about her dupatta (indian "veil") setting skills but she did great for both my looks, especially for my ceremony. I know my ceremony veil was exceptionally heavy -- thanks Lulu!! A little more information: I did do a trial a few months ahead of time, and was impressed with her knowledge and work. Also, she responded quickly with emails/was easy to work with. I had a total of 3 makeup artists for my indian wedding festivities, and she was the most organized and I loved her looks the best! While searching for people to do my junior prom hair and makeup, I came across Dolled up by Lulu, and had to book her! Unfortunately, she was busy, but recommended her assistant, Denise- it was meant to be! She arrived on time, and was so personable!! Not only did my makeup and hair come out perfectly, but she was also very fun to talk to. I really loved how she took her time, always explained what she was doing, and made sure I was okay/liked the outcome. Lulu is the best!!! And so are all of her assistants that work with her. I hesitated at first to email lulu and ask if she or her assistants will be available to glam me up for my holiday party as it was super last min notice however I thought to give it a chance and see what happens. I literally emailed lulu a week before my event. She responded very quickly and was able to send one of her assistants Denise to glam me up. Denise did such an amazing job on my hair and makeup.. I found Lulu's page on Instagram a few months ago when I was looking for a hairstylist for myself and 2 other bridesmaids for a September wedding. We needed someone to come to our home in Orange very early in the morning.
