I ordered half a pound of cake for my boyfriend's birthday and it was dry, crumbly and did not taste like a true Dominican cake (I am Dominican myself). Real Dominican cake is sweet, rich, moist and feels fresh in your mouth. The frosting was a bit hard and not luscious. The pineapple filling was flavorless and a little sour. When I moved to Miami, one of the first things I did was search high and low for Dominican Cakes. I found a few Dominican bakeries, but they were all too far away for me to go to without any reviews to give me an idea of what to expect. When Danelia opened up shop on 8th st near 67th, I was ecstatic! It took me a while to make it in there, but once I did, it was SO worth it. I had a slice ($2) of the cake with the dulce de leche and it was perfect! I was immediately whisked back to Santiago where I first tried me some delicious bizcocho dominicano. Mmmm mmm mmm! The cake was moist (an absolute rarity for Miami), very flavorful, and the meringue was just divine. For a girl like me who doesn't like frosting, the meringue was a great change of pace and was finger lickin' good! The dulce de leche was not at all overly sweet and she did not make the cake overly wet with the syrup. For those looking to order whole cakes, she does the syrup to your preference so that the cake is either seco (no syrup), medio mojado, o mojado, as Kelly O. mentioned. Mine was medio mojado and it was divine! I have also tried the pineapple filling, which was good, but the dulce de leche is definitely by far my favorite from her. This is a very popular spot even though I don't think they've been open more than 6 months. I saw some cakes that were decorated and ready to go, and rest assured that Danelia decorates beautifully. In terms of customer service, she is super kind, friendly, helpful, and passionate about what she does. FYI, she also offers majarete ($3), habichuelas con dulce ($3), quipe ($2--fried only on weekends or if you call 30 min in advance), and pastelitos dominicanos. She also does pastelitos cubanos for party trays. Cake flavor, texture, and meringue are 5 stars, without question. My only complaint is that for individual portions of cake and traditional Dominican treats, prices seem a bit high. The slice of cake that you get is small. However, whole cake prices are very reasonable, and you can taste the work that goes into those cakes, so I would definitely pay $2 for a slice time and time again without a problem because it's that good. So what had happened was... After living down the street for over a year and not having a valid reason for stopping at the small shop with a sign heralding DOMINICAN CAKES over its door, I finally scratched the itch. Juanita was the one that helped me. She was super sweet and that smile of hers made my day. I told her I REALLY loved cake with "natilla" filling, specially when the cake itself was incredibly wet and moist. ("Natilla" is Spanish for Natilla.) SO, she said that ALL true Cubans love it that way. It's like she KNEW me!!! lol Clearly we were Kindred Kuban espiritos, so I ordered the cake! When I came back today to pick it up (--Sorry, "Espiritos" is Spanish. It means espiritos, the plural of espirito ...obviously) the cake looked even better than I expected. She showed it to me then proceeded to tape it up with military grade scotch tape specifically designed to keep fat boys from the one thing they want most! I'm convinced ALL Cuban Bakeries have this evil tape and know you'll end up killing yourself trying to open a professionally taped box with your free hand while driving. UGH!! I digest.... back to the cake. The cake was SPECTACULAR! I waited til almost 2 am to say "OMG! the cake!". I want to say that was by accident BUT, (pause)...lets face it, by then there were a LOT less mouths to feed and well--there IS left over Cake in MY fridge. So, WINNING! Everyone loved the cake! So I ordered from this place because the first time we ordered from here the service was amazing and the cake turned out good.But the thing is last time we ordered a cake and it had came out really nice and now for my daughters quinceañera we thought hey why don't we order from this place because it's her favorite cake place! But the thing is what I got vs what I had been expecting and the cake came out sorta weird as you can see in the pictures the cake is a little flimsy and also it's rough around the edges. The finishing part is off completely and the crown just isn't even working with the cake it just looks completely rushed. When I had said I don't really like how it came out the guy said I was being really picky and that wasn't even the point all I said was to copy the same thing as the cake just change the color to blue and silver. Before he started getting more customers for his cakes and good reviews he was calm and collected and understanding now he's just a different person. when I had got there he was rushing me and he wasn't even done with the cake. Let me start by saying, that I drove all over miami looking for a good Dominican cake with crema pastelera for my baby shower. It was the baby shower of my only baby boy and to me , the cake was very important since it was going to represent my country ( Dominican Republic). I found this lady on yelp and based on her reviews in here, I went ahead and decided to give her a call. With several months ahead, I decided to pass by and try the cake. at first, she told me that I could try the 3 different styles of her cakes ( a little dry, intermediate and wet) . Definitely, not a dominican style but I don't know why I didn't see the red flags but anyways. I went ahead and drove to the address of the bakery ....wait a minute... it's not a bakery , its a dirty house and her kitchen is in the back with an empty fridge and old super old equipment. I tried only one type of cake and it was dried, tasted a little bit sandy but she ensured me that she was an expert and that is all she does ... DOMINICAN CAKE....so I believed her instead of running away. I paid 370 dll for a 5 pounds dominican cake with crema pastelera. The decorations was ok , but the inside that was the important part was horrible, super dry that not even with ice cream you could eat it , and filling ? haaa? no filling at all , not even a cheap pineapple in the middle. All that cake to the garbage, the people not even asked to take a peace home ( I don't blame them) I didn't want to take that garbage home either. It was embarrassing for me that I was expecting this cake for my special occasion. When I texted her , she acknowledged that she did "a horrible job" and decided to return half of the money. She needed to returned the payment in full and close down her dirty place for good. I felt like she robed me and lied to me for just a couple of pennies. That is a moment that it will not going to come back and she ruined it. I wish I've had never contacted her in the first place. :( Heyy at least I have the pictures :( Don't let this lady lie to you, this is not even close to be a dominican style cake. Got my birthday cake from her a couple of weeks ago. Very friendly and the cake was delicious. She let me try the dulce de leche, I bought a pineapple filled individual slice and my bday cake was with guava filling. All 3 delicious and moist! Only thing is the merengue icing wasn't "crunchy" which is how I've had it in the past, not sure why. I bought the cake on Friday and kept it refrigerated over night. Found this place from yelpers. It is a nice little bakery on the edge of little Havanna, I ordered a small custom vanilla cake made with rum and pineapple filling, it was heavenly, light and moist. The icing was melts in your mouth and is not to sweet. The People there are very professional, especially Daniela. I would advise anyone to get any kind of cake here from weddings to birthday. The price is very reasonable for a custom cake. ......UPDATE..... I came by for my second cake, mind you I am not getting specialty cakes, just something to have for deserts. What I have noticed is Daniela takes great pride in making her cakes. She treats each one as a masterpiece of art. I've been ordering from Daniella for years now. She used to have a little bakery but closed it and now has the bakery behind her home. I always order my cake " bien mojadito" very moist. Went to buy a cake here for my birthday. Had not been there before but a friend recommended because I wanted something different. Tired of the same old. The cake was moist, filled with guava in the middle and covered in real meringue. You have to eat it at room temperature so that you can get the full flavor of the ingredients. Everyone loved it. Danelia makes cakes with merengue. Not the nasty marshmallow kind but the actual eggwhites with sugar and a lot of whisking kind. As soon I saw that shiny merengue my heart skipped a beat. She makes the cakes in three ways: dry, moist, or very moist depending on how you prefer it. She can fill it with pineapple, dulce de leche, natilla, ciruelas en sirope, or coconut. I had a slice of both the pineapple and coconut and I wish I'd gotten a third slice in all honesty. The delicious cake was fresh, moist, and made with a lot of love. Danelia was very friendly and even offered me a piece to try right then and there. You can pick up a slice to go if you are in a hurry for $1.50 or can order an entire cake with your choice of filling. They can be decorated in the traditional latin merengue style or in a prettier more refined version. I hope she thrives there because if I have to eat another slice of Edda or Lucial ever again I may cry. read more
