The place, in it's essence, is basically a pizza joint. But it's no ordinary pizza joint as it's modern, sleek, and has a hip-vibe I have never gotten from any other pizza joint I've been to, to date. You order at the counter right inside the entrance and are warmly greeted and happily guided as it was our first time there. The menu is chock full of the mainstays you expect with a few surprises (for us it was mostly on the dessert side of things.) We ordered the Goat Pizza and each had a different dessert - the pizza was deep-dish (which I loved) and all the desserts we had, from a mint cheesecake, an almond flavored tiramisu-looking cake, to their galaxy cake - we shared and we all loved it. Service was super friendly, super attentive, and it was truly sincere - you just can't fake it. I normally don't talk about bathrooms at places I eat at, and I won't go into it in detail, but it was 'entertaining' to see the pics they had up on the wall in their bathroom. The daily special was recommended to me by the guy taking my order. He answered all of my questions without any hesitation and giving me his honest feedback. They have a desert that rotates daily and when I was there it was a chocolate banana pie which was excellent. Then I also ordered a large fries to share with my wife and her friend and that bag was stuffed to the top with fries. They were amazing fries and I saw the peeling and cutting them in house. Trust me, this place is not even close. The plus at the end is Jean Paul, our waiter. He was so great that by the end of the meal, I asked him if he was forced to work here after losing a bet. He laughed and said, "No." I put in an order for some fish tacos and a Huge double-decker Club sandwich. As stated, Jean Paul was an exceptional waiter, and as such, our food was out quickly and served as ordered. I went from the best fish tacos in Brevard at Island IX to the absolute worst, most foul fish tacos in Brevard, if not the entirety of the Sunshine State. The fish was mealy and tough enough to almost request a galloch knife to dine, the breading flavorless and the tortilla stale. Look at the pictures and tell me those look like they were made with fresh ingredients. The side of fries, while fried to a lovely golden brown, were bottom-of-the-barrel food service tripe and, unless you loaded them with salt, were flavorless. What a combo! Next up on the Big Boys perceptible palate was the Huge Double Decker Club sandwich. This was the saving grace and the reason this was not a Swill Alert. If I had stopped at the appallingly awful fish tacos, it would have been. However, this Huge Double Decker Club was delicious. The bread was toasted to perfection, the bacon was crispy, the tomato was fresh, the lettuce fresh, and the turkey was stacked high. All in all, this was a very good take on the sandwich that has been around since the late 1800s. The side of collard greens, however, is another story. Once again, you have bottom-of-the-barrel food service industrial-strength canned greens. Yuck. They were worse than the greens we got for school lunch. Those were actually not bad. The Big Boy says, "If you get lost out here and haven't eaten in three days, I would still skip this food wasteland."

The place is located where it's off our normal beaten path but a close friend reminded us of the place, so off we were to try them again, as if it were the first time. The place hasn't changed much since the last time I was there. Maybe new furniture, maybe new furnishing, but pretty much intact from what I recall. The menus did change as it is very targeted on choices to eat - which I find a good thing. For dinner, around the table, we had two "build your own burgers" and a shrimp and spinach salad. For an appetizer we had their onion petals (which I like better than those massive onions you get at the bigger places. Anyway, all the food was delicious - burgers cooked on point and the salad carried nice large shrimp - all good. We discovered they offer desserts from the local cupcake truck - cakes of all sorts (peanut butter, chocolate, strawberry, raspberry, etc.) that were supremely delicious. If there is a reason to come back it's for their foods and these cakes - phenomenal. Now, the issue with this place is definitely the service. Not to say the servers were lacking - because they were not - they were friendly and courteous. The problem is that they seem to need more of them. I kinda felt bad for the two that were working the room as they had to tag-team and help each other, not to mention how ragged they were running trying to keep up with everything and everyone - which they really couldn't. Again another person on the wait-staff would definitely help. We plan on coming back again, we will do so knowing we will be in for the long haul. Of course it was great. Tender, melt in your mouth roast beef, hot au jus and grilled bread. Big Joe's is the cleanest sandwich shop you'll ever find. Comfy booths, tables and a large menu outside and on the inside wall make it easy to choose what you want. Ordering is a breeze and you're always greeted warmly & your order taken quickly. Don't forget to grab a pickle while you're ordering - a big crunchy dill and a brownie or pasta or spaghetti salad, if you're interested. As long as we live near New Smyrna Beach, Big Joe's will be our go to for a great sub, salad or burger for lunch!
