I am trying to eat better maybe so went with the gyro. I was able to get to Bugsy's a little after 6pm which is key since they close a7pm. Only person in the place was Bugsy. Took my order and then sent me to go grab a seat. Since the place was empty that was easy. In about 10-15 minutes a very hot huge gyro and plate of fries shows up. Wow. I ate all the gyro but barely made a dent in the fries. The taziki (misspelled I know) sauce was delicious. The gyro was full of meat cooked so fine. Now the decor? Wow this place is retro. Definitely a Chicago fan also. Lots of memorabilia and stuff on the wall. The place is bright also. Bugsy is old school so not a chatter but efficient and effective. His restaurant is just like him. The restaurant is obviously a local favorite spot as many other patrons were greeted by name by staff or other diners. We seated ourselves in a booth, of which circles the rest of the room with several tables down the middle. Service was quick, sweet tea for me, not often found in Illinois dining, but perfectly done for this southern girl. Hubby was just as happy with his unsweet tea. The homemade vegetable soup was warm, thick with vegetables, even some cabbage, midst the creamy broth. My hand-presses cheeseburger was as delectable as any, and would have been perfect if tomatoes were in season and carried more flavor. But the lettuce was crisp, the onion sharp, and the pickles crunchy. Hubby has a tossed salad and the catfish dinner. The fish was cooked in cornmeal, a real "down home" dish, plenty of it and plenty of flavor. Hush puppies were delicious, but not enough of them. Then, we both ordered dessert even though we knew we couldn't finish them: strawberry cake and a lemon crème pie. Out of this world! My partner went with the wimpy burger ( not a wimpy burger.. 1.2 lbs) and cajun fries. From the moment you walk in, you know you've found a true local spot. It's small, cozy and decorated with fun signs and memorabilia. The staff are amazing, friendly, welcoming, and just the kind of people you want to see when you're about to dive into comfort food. Even at 1:30 pm, that in between lunch/dinner time, the place was steadily busy. And now I know why. The onion rings? Fantastic. I'm an onion ring snob and these were fresh, crispy, and legit. no frozen batter here, and none of that "pull the whole onion out in one bite" nonsense ( I hate that). The fries were hot, crisp and perfectly seasoned. And the burger is 100% beef, juicy, and packed with flavor. This is a local gem and I'm so glad we went. We'll definitely be back.

(They sell gyros and Kalamata salad, just FYI.) Wanting to accommodate everyone in our party, we chose to move on, unfortunately. They were understanding and even recommended another place, and then when I tried to purchase their baklava, they insisted I take it for free!!! What genuinely hospitable people!! Love this place!! Will definitely stop in again if I'm ever here again.
