As a vegetarian it's often hard to find excellent ramen. Look no further than Domo. Their soup broths are all vegetable based and veggies or meat can be added. As an obsessive ramen eater, Domo has made my top 3 favorite ramen places in Denver. Their clear broth is bursting with flavor and umami and their noodles are always excellent. Sadly the restaurant is a bit rigid in their 'policies' towards vegetarians. They serve side dishes with all meals. The side dishes contain meat and they are unwilling to substitute or even not serve the dishes. I ordered a ramen with vegetables but asked to have them hold the meat side dishes. I didn't really care if they served me something as an alternative I just didn't want the meat. The waitress said she couldn't make an exception and plopped down the meat dish in front of me anyway. A message to Domo ownership: Denver has a large and growing vegetarian population. Whether you like it or not you're going to attract vegetarians with your outstanding broths. A less hostile attitude towards vegetarians would go a long way. read more

Easily one of my favorite restaurants anywhere. Anywhere and that includes a lot of cities and countries. This is the best Japanese restaurant I've been to in the United States and only second to a restaurant in Tokyo where I was wined and dined on an expense account. Although I no longer live in Denver, this is *the* place I recommend, especially in the summer. Their garden is divine. Becky D has it right. The inside is fantastic as well. It really did remind me of some places in Japan. Domo isn't all about sushi. It's much more than that. With your entree you get 7 side dishes which for me is the way to go when dining. Who wants to eat a big plate of something when you can have so many different flavors in one meal. The Teriyaki is fabulous. Don't be mistaken by the Teriyaki you've had at other places. Be adventurous and order it with the fruit based sauce sometime - wow! I also had an Unagi dish, but can't remember the name. I'm an eel fan and this was also very good. For lunch, I recommend one of the Nabemono. Especially in the winter. And last, but certainly not least is the sake. Go with the imported cold sake. If you've never had *really* good sake, it is always worth the extra cost. All in all, this is a fantastic place to bring a date or a small group. This was my first time going to Domo. So excited, went with a decent size group. The ambiance was amazing! However, our waitress was mean and nasty from the moment we first all sat down. She was hostile, rude, and disappeared for a long period of time. Our table had to find someone else to help us. After paying $375.00 for the one table and being charged another 18% on top of that for the automatic tip~ considering our nasty, mean, hateful waitress..... I will never go here again. I love new places, new food, and fun experiences. I waited tables from age 14 until I was out of graduate school & my advice: if you hate people that much~ Do not work as a waitress. This is a great place for a meal cost wise and serving size. But on my last trip for lunch, there was over a 30 minute wait (after prime lunch time.) Thank goodness it was a nice day and we were able to be seated outside in the pretty garden where there are actual chairs, opposed to those uncomfortable stumps inside-sitting on the floor would be more comfortable for me. My friend and I both ordered ramen, me-spicy miso, friend -sukiyaki shoyu. I added an egg and some okra. I was excited when my huge bowl was placed in front of me with the three little 'country' sides. The egg was fried, which is fine, but I prefer soft or hard-boiled in my ramen. The broth was very good in both bowls and the sides were all fun and different in taste. The no soy sauce rule is kinda silly but it's their call, just bring some packets in your pocket and watch them squirm! My only complaint is that I wish they had a location in Sacramento! I love this restaurant. Talk about authentic japanese food. This is the place for authentic japanese food. You're not going to get a bunch of sushi rolls drenched in sauce. This is traditional japanese comfort food. What's strange is that it's in Denver. I never thought of Denver as a city with a large Japanese population. Their donburi's are awesome. You can't go wrong with any one of them. In my opinion so much better than the American way of "let me know if you want more". I was craving Nabemono. I swore I wouldn't order the Wankosushi. I ordered the Wankosushi. ok..... and the Udon with Shrimp Tempura and Pork Teriyaki, with an egg please. We were initiating a friend to the Domo experience for his birthday. I say we scored one for the home team. For such a unique Japanese experience, this place has such a funny "order by the numbers" type of menu. Here's the Tojimono; choose your broth, 1 or 2, choose your meat/topping A-J. Here's your noodle; choose your noodle-udon or soba, choose your meat/topping A-G. But formula style of ordering doesn't detract from the atmosphere, or the the quality of the food. It's elegant, unique, special, authentic. Very mediocre food set in a cool environment with meh service sums it up. This place bills itself as a "country side" Japanese restaurant with a unique setting. The ambience is certainly unique and it does offer a cool garden to sit in and a very interesting interior but that's where the bright spots end. We came in on a Sunday afternoon and were promptly sat after our server checked our temps and had us wait outside. After being sat it took an HOUR for us to order and get our food while we froze our a**es off as they leave the doors open due to covid. The server took forever to get our order and didn't check up on us the entire time. We ordered Tsukemen, gyoza, and a curry ramen. The Tsukemen broth I ordered was soy based and nowhere near the quality i've had in the U.S/Japan. Typically with Tsukemen the broth is thicker and more intense since you only dip the noodles in. This broth did not have an intense flavor and seemed more like a miso soup. The Tsukemen i've had in Japan was a million times better than this. The pork inside it seemed like it was boiled and then put in which was really weird. If you are expecting a nice piece of chashu look elsewhere. The soba noodles were okay and were on a bed of lettuce, been sprouts, and kombu. Both dishes came with a side of potato salad, mixed veggies, and some small noodles. My wives curry was better but they put the Karage right ontop so they got instantly soggy. Gyoza were probably the best out of the food we got but nothing to write home about. They do bill their food as something that's slightly difference than regular Japanese food but the flavor didn't backup that change. This is an older place so i'm thinking they are riding the tails of past accomplishments when Japanese food wasn't that popular in the U.S. These days though the competition is much tighter and you can get way better food in the Denver area. Super fun experience for a Friday night and would be a great place to go with friends or a first date. The interior ambience as everyone mentioned is so cool. It kind of reminded me of the Japanese version of Casa Bonita without the waterfalls and divers. lol. I was smart and looked at reviews on Yelp and the menu before going and decided what to order ahead of time. Glad I did as the menus are indeed confusing, almost to the point of comical. The first time we visited, all the tables were so full so they seated us at that table which is kinda like continues table with the other guests but lower. I don't know what about the other people what they think of sitting right next to the strangers but your table is lower than them They have two of them and I hated it so much. We just left as soon as I found out that table and we didn't have no choice but leaving. I have no idea if it is part of Japanese style or for the families with kids but I hated it. This is a great place if you're looking to try something different, although Domo doesn't make any modifications to dishes, and Domo isn't a place for strict vegetarians or gluten free people. They warn you in advance at least. If the warnings don't deter you, then you'll be able to try Domo's Japanese country food. I'd never heard of Japanese country food until Domo. I still don't really know what Japanese country food is, but I've liked almost everything that I've had at Domo, with the exception of the avocado unagi don. Domo adds something to the avocado, making it more of a creamy avocado spread that I didn't enjoy and that was a disappointment when I was expecting simple slices of avocado. The plain unagi don is great as are the various ramens that I've tried. The entrees come with several side dishes that are varied and make for fun surprises. The outdoor seating area is beautiful, and the interior is beautiful too. read more

The level of excited I was the was to eat at this restaurant was beyond. To my disappoint it was one of the worst meals of my life. Their menu posted online on multiple website looked amazing 5 pages of delicious food. I understand with covid things have changed and not all places are able to provide a full menu but when we arrived the menu the we were given didn't have one item from the menu posted on their website which was very disappointing. One of the main reason we went was for sushi and donburi. Also we did not see a server once we sat down for over 30 min. There was only 4 other tables. There was no reason for the lack of service. We asked for some additional things when our food arrived which we never received. Our food was barley even lukewarm.We also never saw our sever again until the check was given to us. I had lunch with friends at Domo today and was pleasantly surprised by the experience. I didn't know what to expect when I pulled up to what looked like a warehouse near Colfax/Osage, and was slightly put off by the gravel parking lot. After reading the other reviews on Yelp I knew that the exterior is deceiving of the interior's promise, and they were right. The interior is like something from a movie set. I walked through a dark and mellow dining room to a serene patio unlike anything I've seen. Exactly what I would expect to see in Japan, having never been there. The food matched met the expectations set by the environment and my vegetable curry, along with the tuna and chicken dumpling donburi dishes enjoyed by my friends, was very enjoyable. I was intrigued by the variety of "country home" side dishes that accompanied the entrees and the miso soup was nice as well. The only drawback was the service. As was noted in numerous other reviews, the inconsistency and general lacking of service was very noticeable, but the calming atmosphere prompted me to overlook it. What a great place to enjoy simple Japanese food or even Sushi! This place is tucked away and very unpretentious from the outside. When the doors open and you see inside, you are transferred to another space and time. The outside gardens are the best place to dine - weather permitting. The lush Japanese garden makes dining areas private and you feel comfortably at home. The menu has lots of variety and everything is spiced prior to being served so there are no "sides" of spices or sauces. The appetizers come first and are enough to make a meal from but it is fun just sampling it all. The main courses are large so be prepared to take some home for later. This is a great place to take guests or just to enjoy a different type of atmosphere than the contemporary restaurants that serve Sushi in Denver have become. The worst part of my meal is when I joined the clean plates club and was finished. I went there today for lunch which is a good option if you're not looking to spend too much but want to try their amazing food. Unfortunately they didn't have some things that I wanted to try (japanese seafood pancake) and are in the middle of changing tea providers so I did not get a chance to try to ginger tea that everyone keeps telling me about. We had fried oysters, grilled squid, and of course the staple (gyoza) as our appetizers. All three were delicious but I found the squid to be especially delicious. The flavors were very simple but the part that stood out was how well the squid was cooked. It was pretty much perfect, not rubbery but a very meaty texture. Our meals were astounding and came with the best miso soup I think i may have ever had. Judging from how lunch went today, I doubt there is a menu choice that would be bad, will definitely go back. read more

Terrible value to price ratio. The greedy owner tries to nail your wallet by requiring combo plates when you only want a bowl of ramen. The food is mediocre at best for what you can find at less-hyped, more reasonable places. Although the staff is generally friendly, we've been startled a few times by an old fat Japanese guy yelling at the staff, which totally wrecked our moods. Headline: Crappy exterior belies tasty interior Don't let the outside (warehouse right off of I-25 & Colfax) fool you into thinking anything about this place. The interior is right out of what you would expect in a stylized japanese restaurant in rural Japan, with an outside patio and amazingly decorated inside. This place sets the scene for you. Of course, normally this leads to disappointment, but not this time. They do provide you with a multitude of menus - which makes for confusing choices. I'd prefer one menu, personally. Service - present, although they brought the check and didn't even ask about dessert (good thing too - I was bloated leaving here) My drink of choice in most asian places is green tea. This arrived in an oversized (three inches across) mug with a tea-ball full of the stuff in it. It took a long time to develop flavor - once developed, it was ok - nothing special. We ordered two appetizers between the three of us. The first - grilled calamari - was served in thick slices, with the skin still on, a little on the rubbery side, but still full of flavor and served with some pickled ginger and a light soy sauce over the top. The second - Battera Yaki - was sort of a dinner-plate sized fish pancake, covered in some sort of sticky sauce (teriyaki?) and then finished with bonito flakes. My wife asked if she could have a piece and I actually had to think about it for a second to see if I could get away with saying no. Then came the seven sides - the thing that their menu touts. On the side menu today was tilapia with vegetable, tempura fried (spicy, but nice), bean curd (nice broth), lotus root with shiitake mushrooms (unctuous), meat stew (they said it was pork, but it tasted like overcooked beef), soba noodles (cold and slimy, but good with...), cucumber salad (nice and crisp). I avoided the peanut miso sauced beans due to allergies. (Note that they weren't going to warn us about that, so make sure you ask if you have allergies). My wife had Wankosushi, which comes as multiple dishes served on a tray with miso soup. Each dish is the "thing" served on top of a mix of white rice and barley. Five courses: Ebi with spicy wasabi avocado mash (tasted like a deconstructed dragon roll, according to our dining companion), lightly salted salmon (not that salty - good, but not spectacular), mackeral with mustard sauce (very fishy tasting), maguro with a spicy chile sauce (awesome, but the chile sauce packs a punch), and hamachi with wasabi (exactly like at every other japanese restaurant). Each dish is about 3-4 bites, so the multiple courses is a good sampler. I ordered Soba Noodles with Teri Gyu (teriyaki beef) and served with Unagi Donburi on the side. The Unagi was Awesome (yes, capitalized) - soft, with a flavorful teriyaki sauce placed over brown rice, which was cooked perfectly. The large bowl with the broth, noodles, cabbage and the beef in it. The broth and noodles were great, but the beef was overcooked and the cabbage was so-so. This was really a disappointing dish. Entrees are huge. Advice: Stick with the sides and appetizers and you will leave satisfied. You can always order an entree later. read more

I've only been to Domo once so feel free to take review with a grain of salt. Why do I feel like I can review a place I've only experience once? Because Domo is just that, a memorable experience. I could rave about the food and the innumerable side dishes that come with your order, but in my eyes that is not where Domo sets itself apart. From the moment you walk in, Domo makes you feel like you have been transported around the world (or certainly away from the dingy spot in Denver where it is located). As good as food is, it is only food. And with the exception of some super spicy varieties, it all feels the same in your stomach. oh myyyy. oh my! Domo is so unassuming from the outside and so very special and wonderful on the inside. Do not go there if you are a picky eater. Do not go there if your kids cannot behave in public. Do not go there if you are looking for a standard experience. Stepping through the doors of Domo is stepping into a tranquil experience. It is beautifully decked out in old wood. With muted sounds and lovely ladies who greet you - everything is organized and orderly but meant to put one at ease. Their menu is expansive but relatively pre-determined. I had a sashimi rice bowl which came with three sides. I have no idea exactly what the sides were, something with crab, something with mushrooms and something else. However, they were excellent and complimented my tuna sashimi perfectly. The lunch menu is a great time to experiment - much of the offerings are under $10 but you'll still leave full, relaxed and satiated. Also, ginger iced tea (and all iced tea) is $3.50 but totally worth it! Full of fresh ginger flavor and absolutely delightful. If you're able to sit in the garden don't miss out! It is a beautiful Japanese garden which invokes thoughts of mindfulness and peacefulness. Also, be sure to check out the museum off to the side of the garden. It is spectacular, detailed and serene. A comprehensive menu, which was presented on multiple laminates pages. We were assisted by several servers who worked effectively as a team and did a great job coaching us on our order. We enjoyed the special summer cocktails and tuna and chicken and dumplings appetizers before the meal. There were, indeed, 7 side dishes served family style - all were very interesting and deemed authentic by our group expert and tasty by all four of us. Had quite an experience here. Enjoyed the food, service was good and I fet like I took a breif trip to Japan. I had the Tonyu-Nabe (soymilk mini hot-pot) very tasty loaded with fresh vegies. I liked the little sides that they serve with each meal. Mine came with 3 country dish sides and a bowl of rice. The 3 small sides were served almost Korean Style ( you know the several side dished you get with Korean BBQ - kimchee etc.. love it! ) but the dishes were definitely not completely traditional which is probably a good thing. Traditional Japanese County cooking is super bland. I definately took about 30 pics here. A lot to take in. There is a little garden outside, museum and a Aikido dojo. The only thing I didn't like about dining there were the flies that kept swarming around my food. Lunch Menu is super cheap and I would definetely recommend it. We loved this place for lunch! The atmosphere walking up to the restaurant says that you will be having a unique experience. Once inside that feeling continues to deliver! It feels like you're walking into a vacation to Japan. The food is an incredible mix of Raman noodles, various broths each made in a traditional manner leading to lots of various flavors. We all enjoyed our meals immensely. Note that because of the extremely traditional nature of the menu there are no vegetarian options or the ability to meet any strict dietary restrictions. There is indoor and outdoor seating available. Outside it looks like a Japanese garden. Inside it has a warm earthy feeling. We will come back again! read more

I'm confused why this place is considered bad for kids? We just had lunch here with our 4 year old daughter & our 1 year old son, & it was fabulous. This is more than just a restaurant there is a nice garden & museum with a working Akido Dojo too. I guess if your kids aren't taught how to behave appropriately, & you're not interested in culturing them, then yes take them to McD's. The food was wonderful, it made my wife feel like she was back in Japan, I had the Diakon Sushi bowl, the fish melted in my mouth, and the sides were great. I visited Domo for the first time a few days ago. My boyfriend had family in town and Domo was suggested by his cousin. As soon as we walked into Domo, I was instantly impressed with the decor of the restaurant. It's absolutely amazing and super unique. I definitely give them 5 stars for the design and uniqueness of the interior. Our server was really informative and made sure to answer all of our questions and concerns (one of the people with us is a vegetarian). The only thing that we thought was a little strange is that you can't share a dish, (the portions are literally HUGE) each person has to have their own dish. The cold and hot sake was very yummy and the cool overflowing 'box' it came in was a nice touch. The appetizers were delicious with very good choices and variety. The main courses we chose were all mouth watering. I had fun tasting a little bit of everyone's unique dish. I would recommend going to Domo and enjoying what they have to offer. The ambiance and decor of the restaurant are awesome as well as the food. I have a hard time believing that there's a bad choice on the whole menu! read more

I'm writing this review because we have been waiting for our food for 30 minutes and I am trying to distract myself from how long we've been here. Dear Domo, I love your food. It is delicious. My complaints are as follows: 1) You told us the wait would be 15 minutes. At the 20 minute mark I looked in the dining area to discover you weren't even using half of the tables and there were quite a few spots open on the patio. 2) We waited a very long time to get our food. Almost so long that we would have had to get it to go. Of course it came out just in time for us to have to shovel the food down our throats and run out of there. I don't think 30 minutes after ordering is acceptable. Especially since it took 15 minutes before someone even came to take our order in the first place. Like I said, the food is delicious. The tuna donburi is awesome, the sides are all awesome. I recommend it all. Fix the delays in everything and the world will be a better place. read more

Came here with a group of friends, and wow, this was an amazing experience! First of all, this is not the sushi you might be looking for or expecting! And don't ask for soy sauce or wasabi, because their food is so delicious on it's own, that it is actually offensive to ask for such things! The atmosphere is wonderful, like a fantasy Japanese village. You choose what fish and sauce you want, and they do the rest. I got the tuna, and the slices they gave me on my rice were large and to-die-for delicious! My BF got the eel bowl and was equally delicious, the eel was cooked to perfection. The chef gives you 7 side dishes that you share with your table, you don't get to pick these, they are essentially the specials selected by the chef. This place is nothing like you've been to. I think that the negative reviews here are from people that might not be accustomed to such places, maybe they should stick to Applebee's. ;) By far one of my favorite restaurants EVER. Authentic Japanese restaurants are RARE in Denver. There are tons of Asian-fusion restaurants, or very Americanized Japanese restaurants in Colorado, but Domo is probably one of the most authentic places here. The food style is Japanese country style, so it's very home style in look and flavor. While the dishes are more simple, the flavor is always spot on authentic like eating my grandma's food! I have never disappointed in the quality of the food here. You will note that there is never shoyu (soy sauce) or condiments on the table. This is because all the food is supposed to be made flavored to perfection and each time I have been to Domo, the flavor has been just that. Their donburi (rice bowls) are always delicious and they have three different types of teriyaki sauces if you order their grilled plates. The sashimi has always tasted fresh, which is always good for a place serving raw fish in a land-locked state. They always serve their meals (both lunch and dinners) with various side dishes which are always delicious. If you are vegetarian they can always accommodate you with all vegetarian side dishes as well. It is difficult is that they don't take reservations, but for they type of food you can get here, it's not to hard to overlook. Sometimes we have gotten rude hosts/hostess, but they seem to have gotten rid of them. One thing to note, is that since the restaurant is connected with their Aikido dojo, the students of the dojo do often work as servers in the restaurant as part of their training. Give them grace as they are young and inexperienced most of the time, but they're typically always very, very nice. Although, the staff can vary depending on when you go, the food is always worth it, so thus the 5 stars. The small garden and patio in the back is very cute in the spring/summer. When it is warm enough to dine outside, I recommend it. And, be sure to take a look at their museum behind the restaurant to see some old Japanese farming tools and items from country life, as well as an amazing collection of old sake cups from WWII that kamikaze pilots would take their ceremonial drink before their flight. Either way, if you want authentic country style Japanese food you should go to Domo!!!! It's a unique experience and the food is always delicious. Honestly, the food wasn't horrible. The only thing that set these guys back was the fact that they wouldn't give us a side of sauce. The dish was a little bland, and when we asked for a side of sauce to make the dish less boring they refused. Apparently it's their policy of 16 years, but that just doesn't seem right, on top of getting refused several times, it wasn't until the fourth time that they offered to make a different dish. I love this place. The patio seems like a little retreat right in the middle of town, and (were it not for the rail tracks and train horns that occasionally sound their alarms) sitting there I could imagine I was in the Japanese countryside. Their garden is beautiful. Food is great. I always have one of the sashimi donburi bowls, served with a few random side dishes and miso soup. For less than $10, I have a multicourse meal that is healthy, filling, and delicious. Service is spotty - sometimes great, sometimes very slow. Been going to Domo for many years. Enjoy the ambiance and food. Went the other day with a special friend and the dinner was just OK. The fish bowls we had along with the fish appetizer were literally SATURATED with soy sauce! We could not taste the real true flavor of the fish! I mentioned this to the manager there and he just 'shrugged'. I went ahead and sent them an e-mail the next day explaining the problem and nobody ever replied! Heck, I paid eighty five bucks for a dinner for two and one would expect a little better response. If I don't hear from them, I will not be going back! There are more than enough excellent restaurants in Denver where I can easily spend the money and receive far better food quality and reply. read more

There are very few occasions that I have walked out of a restaurant feeling both incredibly full and healthy and lightweight. One does not usually beget the other. :) The grilled squid appetizer was my favorite. Trust your servers, friends. I've found that their intuition is (generally) much better developed than mine. I finally got taken to Domo! Domo's interior is incredibly cute and homey. The low tables are huge irregular glazed wood chunks and are accompanied by soft low stools. Their garden was lacking in charm only because it is February right now but you can see how delightful it might be in peak season. The service was attentive (good-looking) and friendly. Lunch was very reasonable and tasty though the authentic flair of some of the dishes was a bit too much for my complexity lacking taste buds to comprehend. Just don't ask for salt/pepper or soy sauce because their menu proudly states that in the Japanese tradition they do not supply such requests. Gotta respect that! read more
