This is some of the best Cuban food around in my opinion. My go to spot! Service is great, and food always comes out fast! It's never loud and chaotic inside and you can typically always walk in and sit right down. I've never had anything here that I didn't like. They bring out complimentary hot garlic bread when you are seated. And the Mariquitas are my go to appetizer with extra garlic!

During a rare visit to Fort Lauderdale, I wanted to find a good Cuban sandwich near Sawgrass Mills. Don Carlin certainly filled the bill. It's a nice family-owned restaurant with a friendly and helpful staff. The menu looked exhaustive, but I was only interested in the Cubano. The sandwich was great, no doubt about it. My wife had the Fish Sandwich and she said it was also good. For sides we ordered Sweet Fried Plantains and Fried Yuca with Mojo, both recommended by our waitress. They were delicious and I am stuffed! Based on my afternoon, I'd say skip Sawgrass and spend more time at Don Carlin.

Don't be swayed by stip mall shopping center location, the restaurant is cute inside! I ordered ropa vieja (shredded beef in tomatoe sauce) with arroz (rice), fréjoles negros (black beans), and plátanos maduros (fried ripe plantains). My lunch companion had masas de puerco (fried pork chunks), arroz (rice), fréjoles negros (black beans, and plátanos maduros (fried ripe plantains). Both dishes were great! The service was excellent as well. The food was served a few minutes after ordering. The staff checked in on us a few times. I recommend you try this restaurant if in the area.

Tried a new Cuban cafe for my morning coffee in the center of the Windward Isle Plaza. Nothing fancy inside or unique except for a super modern dual coffee machine. The counter girl was very friendly and brewed me a fresh San Martin espresso which I sipped at the counter and tasted great. They open for lunch at 11am and stay open late until 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. The daily special was listed as Oxtail and boiled Snapper. They offer Don Carlin Cocktails including homemade lemonade, mojitos, pina colada, margaritas and house sangria. Noticed the manager organizing the restaurant and greeting customers as they entered the restaurant. The main portion of the bathroom did not have a lock although did include a secondary room with a locking mechanism. Both rooms were clean and basic.

Don Carlin reminds me of eating at my grandma's house. When you walk inside, it's not much, but you don't need a vibey look to serve authentic food. The employees all greet you with a smile and offer bread on the house. I love it when restaurants do this, remember grandma's house? Right when you walk inside, they immediately want to feed you. Because this is Cuban food, I definitely had to try the ropa vieja with black beans. Honestly, three letters... one word... WOW. It's such a great blend of flavors; one does not overpower the other. Also, pairing it with a natural pineapple juice definitely hits the spot. Again, this place may not look flashy. I always say, you come to a restaurant to eat, how it looks is secondary. This is my official Cuban spot forever!!!

I was over the chain Cuban food, and wanted some authentic food that felt like grandma was cooking in the back. I was shocked that in Sunrise this hidden gem was here! It is definitely a hole in the wall , don't let the location deter you from the savory food. It a very casual spot, they have been around for 20 years. I was on the hunt for Ox Tail, Don Carlin delivered ! They have Ox tail specials from Tuesday-Sunday. Everything was so savory, and the service was great food came out in a timely manner! Everyone was very attentive and accommodating to my bf dietary restrictions . The Mamey milkshake was delicious ! I can't wait to try more food from the menu. Overall, please do yourself a favor and check this place out !

Home cooked by GRANDMA! I was pretty amazed stopping by this little hole in the wall. I didn't expect much of it because I don't typically go out for Cuban food being Cuban myself. I made an exception for this little hole in the wall. We were instantly greeted and felt comfortable. It got full VERY quickly. As we browsed the menu, we noticed regulars stopping by and being greeted by their first name by the staff. That's when you know, they're regulars and the food is bomb. The Cuban food was as close to Cuban as it can get, in the streets cooking for people. It had a very home cooked taste that you don't typically find in the "Cuban" chain restaurants many know of in South Florida ie La Caretta, Latin America etc. What surprised me the most was, I saw the cook coming out when the restaurant was packed and everyone was eating. Of course, you cannot guess who it was? IT WAS THE GRANDMA. Yup! No lies. A , what appeared to be a 60+ year old grandma COOKING the Cuban food by the book. She puts Nitza Villapol to shame. Jk Cubans know who that is. A part of me was grateful a grandma was the head chef because only a grandma would still cook with that much care for masses in a restaurant. The other part of me, the granddaughter side, wishes she would rest. Either way, I'm grateful she was cooking the food in this restaurant. For that alone, I would come back to that restaurant and recommend it to others. If you are looking for authentic Cuban food, Don Carlin is the place to go. Service was fantastic , food was great, restaurant was cozy but not fancy and the prices were still reasonable for this day and age.

The churassaco was well seasoned & very tender, also came with fluffy moroz rice, and nicely charred plantains!

Seems like the family was looking for a change of scenery and taste tonight. Brainstorming where we should go; we unamiosly decided on Don Carlin! Going inside, there was a good amount of people seated, but we were seated rather quickly. Tonight we had 1x cuban pot roast and 1x churassco steak cooked medium rare. Going into my review, the food and service was excellent. The pot roast came in a savory cuban inspired red sauce; the beef was flaking off the fork, and came with creamy black beans, fluffy white rice, and nicely charred plantains. The churassaco was well seasoned, very tender, and came with fluffy moroz rice and nicely charred plantains. Moreover, the servers were very friendly and offered free wifi! Overall, we always enjoy the quality of both the food and service at Don Carlin and happy to give our experience tonight another 5/5!

OMGOSH!!!! This place is absolutely AMAZING!!!! We were close by visiting family and saw the great reviews and why not enjoy some good food. Needless to say we we quickly found out why people love this place. It's a small restaurant but it's both intimate and large enough to host many parties. We ordered our food and our server (Mario) was absolutely amazing. We scouted the menu and made our choices. The biste empalizado was a great portion as well as delicious. The chicharrones de pollo were excellent. All of our food tasted fresh, delicious and the portions were an excellent size. The maduros were also delicious and the rice and black beans were awesome. Tuesday & Friday special is oxtail and it's great. Funny story my wife loves oxtail but she didn't see the special and ordered something different. When we finished our meal and she saw what the special was was bummed she didn't try it out. Our server was so kind. He brought us a small sample for us so she can try it. Needless to say this is the reason why this place does as amazing as it does. What a kind gesture. We'll definable be back.

We were looking for some good local Cuban food near a relatives house and we found this at Don Carlin. We arrived a little early for lunch and so glad that we did. Were seated right away and for us the food choice was obvious. Lechon Asado. We also saw that there were empanadas on the menu also, yes please. The empanadas were ok. However the Lechon Asado was really good. The meat was tender and had great flavor. It was accompanied by plantains and Moro rice. Both were as good as the pork. I chose wisely. The service was really good. Our waiter was attentive but not overbearing which is always a good thing. I would definitely return when I am in the area. Please support this business.

We had an amazing dinner here! Fast and friendly service with authentic Cuban food. I had the Roast Pork sandwich. It was so good and hot. My husband had the Cuban, it was equally as good. My daughters each had the shredded beef with rice and beans and delicious plantains. The Cafe Con Leche was fabulous as was the complimentary garlic bread. read more

The other night I was sitting at the bar at Bahama Breeze engaged in conversation with a complete stranger, who had good taste in drinks, and obviously in food as she said something to me when she heard I worked at J Alexander's. She said she was in town from Destin, and used to live in the area..and as soon as she got here, she hit up three places, Bahama Breeze, J Alexander's and Don Carlin's. I said what is Don Carlin's? She told me it was good spanish food. Growing up in Dade county, I believe broward county does not know good cuban food.. we had tried Padrino's...ehh ok...the new Havana's... Gross, rip off.. but never heard of Don Carlin's... we just always drive to Casa Romeu's in Weston for the Spanish fix.. they do have the BEST mariquitas there!!!! Well, we hit up Don Carlin's last night. The mariquitas were great, but the sauce with them was toooooo garlicky...The complimentary bread was nothing to write home about.... but the vaca frita,chicken noodle soup and flan were great! The service was sincere and they went out of the way to accommodate us. I was dining with my two young children, so I never expect great service....but luckily they were accommodating and sweet. Food for the most part was great, I will definitely be there in the future, and I do recommend to those people who appreciate cuban food in broward but don't feel like driving far! read more

I went there two days in a row!!! The Oxtails were amazing!!! Juicy, succulent and perfectly seasoned!!! The croquetas and empeñadas were also beautifully prepared!!! My servers were nice and the restaurant was impeccably clean!!! On day 2, I had the Churrasco y Camarones. The steak was served in a sauce that I did not like. The sauce was good, but Churrasco and Chimichurri are a match made in heaven!!! Chimichurri was made available, but I wish my steak was made with out the sauce. The black beans and rice are divine. I will be going back again soon!!! read more

After a long roadtrip from Colorado to Miami, I knew that I wanted Cuban for my first meal back in "Little Cuba." Enter Don Carlin. With a basic and simplistic interior, the relaxed atmosphere was exactly what me and my dad needed to take a breather and refuel ourselves from the 10 hours we had just spent in the car. I started with a ham croquette that tasted just like a corndog and came with perfectly cooked plantains. For entrees, my dad got the vaca frita (which I enjoyed leftovers of a couple days later) and I got the shrimp creole. Both were delicious and finished off with a Cuban coffee to prepare us for the night of moving in ahead! The service was very attentive and the waiter was willing to substitute any sides for whatever you like (although we stuck with the black beans, rice and plantains!) Definitely a cool neighborhood Cuban joint that I would frequent if I am ever in the area! read more

I went to Don Carlin for lunch today because I was feigning for some good Cuban food. My girlfriend and I decided to start things off with a little Cafe' con leche. They brought it out quickly and with some delicious buttered and toasted Cuban Bread. In all honesty the Cafe' was some of the best I have ever had, rich and creamy with plenty of smooth espresso. I, then ordered the Palomilla steak with Tostones, Plantains and white rice...I was pretty impressed that it came with three sides for only $6.99. The Palomilla was. very good, seasoned to perfection and just thin enough to make it easy to cut and chew. I was very impressed...although the portions were not as large as I have tried at other local Cuban restaurants they were Plenty and I did not leave feeling Overstuffed. The Tostones were very good as well, though I could have gone for a little more mojo. The Plantains were large and sweet and very well cooked. Vanessa got the "pollo enchilada" which was good, but not as good as the Palomilla,in my opinion. If you're looking for a fast, inexpensive Cuban meal Don Carlin is the way to go. read more

Quick review: stopped by for dinner after a quick search on my Yelp app following some shopping at Sawmill. My fellow Yelpers have it nailed down: this is a fantastic Cuban joint, with friendly service, great food and reasonable prices. Special Cuban Sandwich ($ 5.25) with shredded pork and ham was fantastic. The ropa vieja was really good (quite tomato-y) and plantains perfectly cooked. Chicken noodle soup hit the spot, and the dinner rolls (cuban bread with butter) was fantastic. Highly recommended for those in the neighborhood! read more

Pleasant surprise. What I love about cuban restaurants in Broward is the Miami element is not present. I happen to stumble across this place and the positive reviews sealed the deal. I had grilled chicken, white rice, plantains and my favorite...red beans. Everything was delicious! The bread was amazingly soft and fresh! No butter needed. The service was very friendly and attentive. Very quiet atmosphere, no yelling or screaming and it was nice NOT hearing a "que bola" throughout my lunch. I will definitely return and absolutely recommend for a delicious affordable lunch. I had lunch and a coffee for under 10$ read more

First time and I must say looking good. Came for late lunch w Friend. We got in sat and very quickly were approached and greeted. We got nice and just toasted garlic bread after drinks came and the order was taken quickly too. Now, we had to wait an acceptable time for food to come but it was worth it. Food cooked to perfection and rice and beans tasted delicious. For dessert fot café con leche and again amazing and perfect See photos for our choices. My company loves to bring our out of town guests to Don Carlin for authentic Cuban in south Florida. This is how I found out about this hidden gem. The service is excellent and the food is always so fresh. Today we went and I ordered my usual, a potato ball and the beef Ropa Vieja. It comes with rice and fried plantains. I'm not a huge fan of plantains but these are very tasty and not too greasy. I finished my lunch with a delicious Cuban coffee, it is the perfect pick me up after such a filling meal, a must try . read more

I have been coming here for over 15 years. It has had a change in owners a couple of times but their charm, friendly staff and delicious food remain the same. I have tried everything from the pollo a la plancha, the carne asada, lomo, filet de pescado, ropa vieja, y rabo incidido. All always cooked well and always juicy and tender. Never over seasoned just perfect. The rice is well seasoned, the black beans are cooked well. And their tres leches and flan is so good. This place is family run and very reliable. Must try! Excellent seafood paella. I ordered a serving for 4 ahead of time and it was ready when it was supposed to be. The gentleman at the counter assured me that the seafood was fresh and that the lobster had been brought in live that afternoon. If he was lying, I couldn't tell the difference. I posted a picture to show the presentation. There was lobster, crab, mussels, shrimp, fish, and other treats. It all tasted extremely fresh and delicious. More importantly, I brought it over to my parents' house for my mom's birthday, and she loved it most of all. I don't know how their paella compares to other restaurants, but I'll be going back to Don Carlin. read more

OMG. I am stolen! This is such a warm atmosphere. It has amazing service. The atmosphere is personal and taylored local fare, the food is quite exquisite and is a well thought out course selection. My fare: The shrimp cocktail not only fresh, it was cooked perfectly and was tasty as ever. The cabernet was smooth and complementary, and the Steak and Shrimp Palermo went excellent with my wine choice. ;-). First of all... I am Cuban. Extremely relevant to this review so listen up. This place was reallyyyyy good. Their mojo blew me away. Their pan con bistec was delicious. Their vaca frita was perfect. The only negative thing I can possibly say about this establishment is that they have a female server that just stands there and STARES at you with cara de culo. That is all. This place is definitely 5 stars for Broward. Loved it. read more

Great spot, has the small Latin vibe and home-style cooking. I find a lot of Cuban restaurants to be a bit greasy and too salty in taste, but Don Carlin has the right amount of "sazón", and salt to taste! Great desserts and the waiters are very attentive. I love the food unfortunately the customer service, more so the owner, wanted to charge me 12 dollars for two pieces of oxtail. Mind you I just spent 15 on a whole meal of oxtail, rice, and beans. She was very rude and sadly this is not the first time she acted this way toward me. I keep going back because yes, the food is good but if your trying to keep local customers happy and coming in I would suggest she stop being so cheap with food. Don't get me wrong I understand oxtail is expensive but 12 dollars for two more pieces. Very rude and greedy woman. read more

I assume this is a Cuban cuisine restaurant but their Cuban sandwich was not up to par. It was dry and not flavorful. I asked for chimichurri sauce & mojo sauce, which helped. Their cappuccino was just right. Oh, the ham croquettes were good. Overall, for the price & for what it should be, I will second guess before I return. read more

I don't often give out 5 star reviews, as per my past reviews . I would give this place a solid 4.4 stars with the only thing lacking is the cafeteria feel to it. Food was authentic and delicious . My fiancé has been begging me to take her because she hasn't been in 6 years. What we ate. Stopped in here for dinner and had the yellow rice and chicken with cheese melted on top. It was so good the chicken was layered inside of the moist and flavorful yellow rice. I would definitely recommend this restaurant, great authentic Cuban food! read more

I ordered the flank steak, it was pretty tough. I wouldn't order it again it was $$. They didn't give that much rice they filled the 2 partial portion of the tray instead of the main part. I got more beans than rice.... not worth the 17.00. Bravo or Sedanos gives a better deal for 1/2 the price. read more

The best Cuban food ever! I had the roast pork with rice and beans. The plantains were crispy on the edges but soft and sweet in the middle. The staff was very sweet and attentive. By far, the BEST Cuban I have ever eaten. The pork chunks were tender and crispy on the outside. The shredded pork, so flavorful and delicious, the same with the black beans and plantains. Freshly made limeade, sour and yummy. And unbelievably, the lunches were all $7.99 except for steak How can you go wrong? Clean, excellent waitstaff and pleasant. You will LOVE it!!! read more

Awesome Cuban restaurant located in Sunrise, im a old costumer of this place, food always fresh. Service is great ask for Hugo or Mario to be your server they will definitely take good care of you! Once you in they will bring you the Cuban bread with butter which is the best! I highly recommend trying the Arroz con Pollo, you must call before because they make it from scratch it takes almost an hour and half but you will love it! read more

Walked in after a fabulous breakfast at ally's cafe too (thank goodness we went there to eat and not this place). We asked the lady at the counter for a colada to go. While she made it, another waitress took our payment.... $3.70!!!! Although the colada was pretty decent for not being made in Miami, FOUR DOLLARS FOR A TINY CUBAN COFFEE?!? These people are out of their mind with their prices! It's a good thing we didn't order a whole breakfast or we may have had to sell our house to pay for it! Never again..... read more

Ordered takeout for mother's day and the food was delicious. The ropa vieja was cooked to perfection and the picadillo was extraordinary with all the Cuban flavors. The rice, plantains, and black beans complemented every bite. It was our first time eating at Don Carlin's and we were not disappointed. Mario is the best server I've even come across, the food here is amazing. I've had their palomilla and their churrasco and it's the best I've had in all the Latin food places around here. You can tell the employees here genuinely enjoy their job and everyone always has a smile on their face. A nice home away from home , Don Carlin should be the example for all other restaurants to follow. I highly encourage others to try this place and enjoy what real food taste like and what great service is truly supposed to be. Will be back in the near future read more
