A search for TACOS in Oregon City on my Yelp app came up with Don Chico's, so they were my 'taco destination' for lunch. They're located on very busy Mollala Avenue, but parking was no sweat because they have a huge parking lot in back. I ordered four different tacos: carne asada, carnitas, pollo, and al pastor. Well, all four were quite flavorful. . .there wasn't a bad one in the bunch. All four meats were prepared well (tender and lean) and nicely seasoned too. Also, the low price of $1.60 each was attractive! Don Chico's dining room is very spacious and orderly, and the ladies at the front counter were friendly and welcoming. It was the old Skipper on Molalla Ave. Nearly remodeled, clean bathrooms, etc. Decent food, only had street tacos and pretty quick. I love tacos so I'm going to grade hard for this one. I'll first say 4 stars for Mexican food in Oregon City is more like 2/3 stars elsewhere. Our options here seem plentiful, but in regards to delicious *authentic* Mexican food, our options are limited. Even though there are things I would change about Don Chico's, it's still my go-to in the area for quick to-go orders of Mexican food. You can find a lot of options on their menu, including things that you can ask for aside from the menu. Hint: chilaquiles. Delicious. Here you can actually taste the spice in their food..it's not bland like some others in the area. Rice and beans are always dependable and my husband can easily down 10 of their tacos. As a vegetarian myself, I'd love to see more menu options without meat..a substitute like potatoes would be amazing to see here. Their horchata isn't homemade and magical, but it can fix a craving if you have one. Their staff is either friendly, or not..it's hit or miss. Very, very, very delicious and surprisingly good prices for what you get! I had the shrimp fajitas and they were amazing! You really do get a bang for your buck from this place. Friend had spicy shrimp and it was also delicious. They have lots of salsa on hand to choose from to add to it. Also, pickled vegetables available if you want. A pretty big selection and I hope to try other things next time. One thing that bugged me was the fluorescent lighting. It really is hard on the store. The walls are painted purple and it's a bit festive but the fluorescent lighting room nearly ruins all of it. Maybe someday invest in better lighting, guys? Best "Cheap Mexican" in Oregon City! The place is fairly new and very clean. Opens early for breakfast. Obviously fresh and still very quick. Can't beat the breakfast burrito. I opt for bacon only but you can get bacon, ham and sausage all in one! Dinner the carnitas tacos, enchiladas and carne asada are all highly recommended. I've been hopping around from place to place trying to find something good and boy, if the carne asada plate and carnitas tacos are an indicator, I found it. Only caveat: my carnitas tacos were FAR better than my asada tacos. But the carne asada plate is very good so perhaps it just doesn't stand up well to the tortillas? Service here is terrible. I've waited 30 minutes before while my friends waited patiently with their food in their arms (we ordered one after the next). Staff has mixed up orders before and laughed in our face when they tried to blame us for the mixup. I thought the customer was supposed to be right? I think this place is really great. $6.25 gets you a good sized wet burrito filled with chicken. I always ask for a "side of chips" and for a dollar they give you a bunch of tortilla chips that they fry up when you order them. Goes great with the awesome fresh salsa bar. So this is not your high end type of Mexican place... it is a great neighborhood lunch place. You go to the counter and order off the reader board. They have various fresh salsa's on a separate serving table... all fresh and good quality. The service is good, quick and friendly. The place is immaculate. I usually have the carne asada plate... it is a bit spendier at $11.25, but it comes with a side salad... and I have to tell you... it is a real meal... you will not leave hungry! I just paid attention to the breakfast specials they have here... they have a "big" breakfast that comes with 2 eggs, 2 bacon, 2 sausage and hash browns and toast for $6.25.... that has to be the best price in town by a long shot. Randomly came across this place last night- glad we stopped in! This restaurant is adorable- fantastic bright colors (even in the bathroom) in a very clean plus friendly atmosphere. We stood staring at the menu for a good 5 minutes, luckily the cashier was patient and had a good sense of humor. I finally ordered the beef fajitas (turns out it came with a salad) while my husband requested the enchilada and (pork) tamale. I'm a huge fan of horchata, so we also ordered a huge portion for the two of us to drink. We sat down, watched some futbol on the tv and had our meal within 8-10 minutes. The husband enjoyed his food- his only complaint was that the tamale didn't taste very fresh. He inhaled the rest of his food, then proceeded to move to my meal. Portions are big here, so be warned. I had a huge salad, rice, beans, two (freshly made!!) tortillas in addition to the beef fajita mixings. All were very tasty! The food was just so so and the service was very puzzling. First of all, I asked for a chicken taco for my daughter and asked if I could just have lettuce and tomato on it and nothing else, as she has a lot of food sensitivities. The cashier kind of gave me a frown and a few minutes later mentioned that they would have to charge me next time for that tomato request. Now keep in mind, we're talking about three little pieces of tomato on a couple of tacos! I told her just to charge me now if it's going to be an issue and she said "oh it's OK this time but next time you'll have to." At this point I'm already thinking "there won't be a "next time, lady"! Was a very weird and uncomfortable passive aggressive kind of vibe going on with her. Next, they bring my son's burger out and they had the order wrong, as he asked for no mayo, or whatever dressing is a put on it... and they had slabs of it..plus other toppings he did not want. We simply asked for a burger with meat and cheese only, very simple. And they couldn't seem to get it right. It was not so much that they got the order wrong, but it was their attitude about it. They were clearly very annoyed at us! Lastly, as we were leaving, my sister and I were discussing if we are supposed to leave our dishes or take care of them ourselves? We couldn't seem to find any signs or evidence of either one and there wasn't anyone at the counter at the time. So we tidied up our table as best we could and left everything there and started to walk out the door. At that point, the same cashier came to us and asked if we'd ever eaten there before. We were pleasantly surprised, thinking that maybe she was going to thank us for coming in and asking us to come again. But, it turns out she was really trying to reprimand as for not being our dishes away! She said that clearly we have not been here before because that's the norm there. Oy vey! Don Chicos is the best taqueria style Mexican in OC hands down. Run by a truly delightful family the food is fresh and good quality spot on flavor and most important super consistent. You get the same Carnitas tacos every time, the same steak burrito, all served as fast as they can go and in a super clean joint. I've walked through their kitchen several times when I've made huge orders and it's as clean in the back of house as the front. Their salsa bar is well stocked and they often have a specialty home made hot drink available. I'd chose Don Chico over the other options in town for this type of Mexican food every time. read more
