On a weekend afternoon I traveled to New Lothrop to take in some youth baseball and hit the TnP…read morecafe on the way out, having read some nice reviews. I'm sorry I came out to New Lothrop at all. The baseball wasn't noteworthy except for the distinct lack of hospitality. I mention it only because this was *repeated* at TnP. I was hungry and had a decent drive back home. So I figured I'd have a meal at the cafe. I was mistaken. I sat in the cafe for 10 minutes and no staff appeared. I figured they must be short so I wandered into the grocery. Nope, plenty of staff. At least 5 on duty by my count. So I tried to flag someone down. No luck. One woman seemed pretty busy carrying boxes back and forth. Two more women behind the meat counter, each talking to couples who had small kids in tow. Obvious locals. I tried to get their attention. One did notice my presence but chose not to actually acknowledge me. So I started perusing the aisle to see what they had. I'm checking out the wares for a minute.... and I can feel the eyes of one of the women behind the meat counter staring at me as though I might be shoplifting. So I started walking back toward her to ask if the cafe was open. She disappears. I go back to the cafe thinking maybe she went there. Nope. Still no one in there. They don't even have a menu I can look at. Finally I go back to the grocery and grab a bottle of pop for the ride home. Two people are available for check out. The guy on the right literally won't make eye contact. So I go to the girl and pay a jacked up price for the pop which I now realize was sitting in a cooler that wasn't really doing much cooling. The check-out girl is the only person in the place I can exchange a few words with. She seemed nice. 1 for 5 ain't bad for this town I guess. This seems like a provincial little market in a tiny provincial burg. If you look the slightest out of place - not sure how I didn't fit in - people here will give you the side eye. I will never come back to this place if I don't have to. 18 months in Genesee County and this is the only place I haven't felt welcome. And that includes some gritty blocks in Flint. I'd give TnP zero stars if I could.

Nice little mom and pop grocery store. This grocery store is very small but full of great meat, produce and baked goods, plus it's stocked with everything you'd need for a trip to the local market. The liquor and beer and wine options are very impressive for a tiny grocery store. They have some very high end labels etc.. In the front is a little gift shop area (a nook) with gifts, holiday and seasonal items, clothing, jewelry, candy, decor, hand creams, glassware, crafts, kitsch, and toys. Prices on both the gifts and grocery items, particularly pasta, meat and cheeses are a little high but the store is well stocked and the quality was nice. On the other corner is a small takeout restaurant and coffee/ice cream bar. You can dine in at the small diner area located on the other side. We had some coffees, bagels with cream cheese and a breakfast burrito while we waited. My breakfast sandwich was quite good for diner food and my wife's bagels were good, too. They do sell Starbucks coffee drinks, but we ordered their regular coffee, and that was good, as it's Fireside Coffee. Customer service was merely alright- polite and ok. All in all, a great hidden gem in a tiny sleepy hamlet.

The bread is not soggy and there is a balance of corned beef, sauerkraut, cheese and sauce. I ate three of them there during the Frankenmuth Oktoberfest and I was pleased with all them. I highly recommend you give them a try. If you want an alcoholic beverage, you can take your food into the adjacent bar and eat it there. Lots of parking on the east side of the building. Too bad I live in Nevada; I sure would like another of their Reubens right about now.

But we just wanted lunch so it was fine! The menu is small but it was fine - we all found something we liked and when one of us didn't, the person behind the counter made her a grilled sandwich to order. I got a grilled chicken BLT. It was not a traditional chicken breast but something along the lines of a chipped chicken lunchmeat. Overall, it was "ok" - it tasted ok and it filled my stomach. The custom grilled sandwich was a tad soggy but tasted "ok" as did the meatball sub. No serious complaints but nothing exceptional either. Maybe it was just our preferences or maybe it was just who was cooking that day. ‍
