I tried La Azteca Taco House for the first time and went all out with a big carryout order to share. Everything turned out phenomenal. The food was fresh, flavorful, and hit all the right notes with that authentic Mexican taste you don't always find. Portions were huge, so we had plenty left over, and the prices felt more than fair. The staff was super friendly, got the order ready fast, and the place has that classic, no frills neighborhood feel I like. Grabbed a take out order late (paid online), arrived to no cars in lot and a locked door Worker called me and told me they were open & had my food after I left, I came back and the door was still locked. Had to wait for it to be opened. Food was supposed to be a steak "burrito" and a chicken quesadilla. Picture attached is chicken quesadilla untouched (how it came) and the steak "burrito" came with lose pieces of steak, raw pepper, lots of orange orange cheese and no onions. I had been craving their tacos for a while, so I decided to go there on Saturday June 20, 2026. When I go I usually get their 12 taco special. I did notice that the price had went up since the last time that I was there, but it wasn't a big deal. $20 for 12 taco still is a good deal. Anyway the girl at the counter wasn't very friendly at all. I finally got my order after waiting for a while, but I get it, they are really busy. I got home super excited about eating my tacos and the tacos had no taste. It tasted like unseasoned meat and a tortilla shell. I forced myself to eat a few of the tacos but ended up putting the rest in the refrigerator. The next day I tried eating some more, but they tasted even worse. I was very disappointed, because I had been looking forward to eating their tacos. I'm not sure if they have a new cook or not, because usually their tacos be on point. Not authentic. Very salty shredded chicken. Ordered steak tacos from their app. Was told that order was canceled when I showed up for pick up because they "don't do steak tacos." The food is 5/5!! Service 0/5. Friend lives in area and we were in the mood for Mexican. He warned their service is awful and long wait times. I looked at the previous Yelp reviews and they were all positive. On other ratings places, complaints. I thought to do a Grubhub pick up. He lives 7 minutes away. Got there and waited until order said was ready. Went in to grab happiness. Dine in service is not being offered. There was about 9 people waiting in line or had placed orders. I could see my food sitting out on the counter, yay!!! But I had to wait in line for 15 minutes. Poor worker, he was responsible for taking orders, getting them from the back, and drinks. Yes some food items came wrapped in tin foil which was weird..but the food was beyond awesome. Negatives: paid 3.35 for 4oz of rice. Rice would have had more flavor if could add some salsa on top. They give the smallest salsa I have ever seen... no way I was waiting on that line again. Next time I'll pay to get a large side of it. Vegetarian taco, bean tostada, bean and cheese burrito, cheese enchilada (loved the sauce), and friend got beef enchilada lunch special. I'd you have the patience, which I will, in the future go! Greasy little taco spot I used to frequent as a teenager. Not much has changed. Tried to give it another chance but they don't answer their phones and when I walk into order, the waitresses all ignore you with stank ass attitudes. They don't give two shits about being polite and the kitchen is mad disgusting. I just realized they have an 80/100 health score, which isn't good considering it includes pests in the markup. I can't believe I'm updating this review, but here I am doing just that. Wow, some things have definitely changed here- and for the better! Despite hesitations and prior experiences with La Azteca Taco House, I decided to give this little neighborhood dive another shot recently and I was blown away by the positive changes. They've pretty much done a 180 since I was there the last time. To begin with, the food is really good- homemade recipes made with fresh ingredients and generous toppings. The food is spicy, more like authentic Mexican food. Right now, I'd say it's probably one of the closest to authentic Mexican cuisine that I've ever had and I've been to Mexico before! I was completely shocked- this was not the old La Azteca that I not so fondly remembered. This was the new and improved La Azteca. The cheese quesadillas are good, not soggy or swathed in grease. No, they are delicious, made with zesty cheeses and not at all like those oily things that I remembered from before. They don't have traditional nachos on the menu these days, but they do have a terrific taco salad that is similar to loaded nachos. It's so good, probably the best taco salad that I've ever had in Michigan. All of the vegetables were fresh and it was loaded with sour cream and the hottest hot sauce ( both served on the side, of course) you can find anywhere. They seem to have pared down the menu selections a bit and that's probably a good thing. I think they are able to focus on special dishes a little better now instead of trying to do a lot of things and not well. They still don't have a soda fountain dispenser, but they do have bottled drinks (Coca Cola products), which is just fine with me, and they use reverse osmosis filtration systems for the water, so it's safe to drink. They've never had a liquor license that I know of, but that's not a problem, especially if you are doing takeout. As far as the ambiance goes, it's still a dive, but it's very clean and while they still have a small dining room, it seems like carryout is the ticket these days. While the service was always on the rude side before, the people behind the counter and the waitresses seemed pretty friendly this time. While the line to pick up food was long, the wait was not too bad considering how many people were lined up to grab takeout. Everyone was pleasant and cheery, making conversation with the neighborhood locals. Prices are still the best in town. I think we paid under $20 for the two of us, which is really hard to do in today's economy. Heck, Burger King costs about that for two people now! I'm glad I gave La Azteca another chance! read more

Their house made salsa completes this meal which should only be considered a way to give you digestive system some likely needed exercise. Whenever I'm in Michigan, this is on my list of places to go to. Some things are just comforting, and this is high up there. My daughter took our whole family out to eat here. I have been by this place a thousand times because the neighborhood where it is located is an older section of Flint, and its appearance was run down looking. The inside of the building was much like the outside; a bit dated and plain. But our waitress, Sherice, was extremely kind and patient, explaining to us items on the menu. We ordered our food, and waited a little bit until the food arrived; but it was well worth it. The food was hot, pleasing to the eye, and full of flavor. This Mexican restaurant is not much to look at. Inside is very basic style diner with a couple of tables and several booths against the wall. A friend and I went for dinner on a Sunday. There were very few options of places open near downtown Flint on a Sunday evening. As it turned out La Azteca was not busy just because they were open, but because they have some seriously good Mexican food. The prices per meal are also inexpensive, especially considering the amount of food that comes with an order. We started with chips and an order of the guacamole and a couple of Mexican sodas (lime and pineapple). The chips were warm, which was nice, but were really just a means of getting the guac to your mouth. Theirs came studded with the right amount of fresh tomatoes and onion. Awesome. It was mild but they provided a hot sauce so that you could add spice to your own choosing. I'm a big avocado fan and I loved their guac. My friend and I each ordered the beef flour meal which came with a taco, burrito and enchilada along with rice and beans. The rice and beans were alright, the plate also had lettuce and tomato with some type of sweeter red sauce (I'm not sure what it was exactly but it was good), which liven it up a bit. The main entrees were great. The tacos in particular were a high light. Their flour shells were fried in a way that caused them to puff and become the perfect amount of crunchy. I'm not a fan of the hard, chewy shells, these were anything but. The burrito had a beef and potato stew inside and the tortilla had a light crisp to it, as if it had been quickly and lightly fried. Each item had a good amount of meat and flavoring, something that often seems to be lacking at Tex-Mex places. La Aztea did not need to cover up everything in a pile of melted cheese and sauce. La Azteca is quite literally a hole-in-the-wall. My mom started eating there when she started working at Flint Osteopathic Hospital back in the 70s, and then she took me there when I was young taking private music lessons at the Flint Institute of Music. If you can get past the sign that has been blown out since the late 70s and the less-than-attractive exterior, you are in store for some fabulous Mexican food at an amazing price. You may also want to ignore the darkly-lit interior and mediocre service, too... The last time I was there, you got your pop from the can because the fountain pop machine is broken. I realize I'm not painting the most appetizing picture, but the burrito deluxe is to die for. I also really, really enjoy the soft shell beef and cheese taco (my mouth is watering right now). The hot sauce is homemade and very spicy, so use it sparingly. The food is very flavorful and so filling. Two people can easily get a very filling lunch for less than $10. Now that I'm a student at Michigan State, I don't get to eat at La Azteca as much as I'd like, but I always make an effort to stop in when I'm home. Eat there - you won't be disappointed. Mind you, La Azteca is considered a classic around these parts, although the appeal of it was totally lost on me. I didn't get it. In never understood the hoopla surrounding it. Things have improved. The service is still way too slow, in my opinion, especially for takeout, but the food is good. They seem to be on their game. The staff was also a lot friendlier than they had been during my previous dining experiences. My wife's opinion of La Azteca is still higher than mine, but I would say that things have definitely turned a corner. Now it's a staple for takeout on the weekends. Good food, reasonable prices. I love Mexican food, this place is a travesty. Just because your parents have taken you here for years does not a good taco make. Upon my arrival I was excited about the broke down Mortal Kombat cabinet in the entrance way, but thats is precisely where I left my excitement. No complaints about the service. The walls are sparse save for some sombreros and table numbers, dimly lit. It didn't strike me as dirty but it wasn't the most sterile looking place I've eaten at. I'm just going to jump right into this now. No Mexican place should ever, ever charge for chips and salsa. They should be on the table before I even order a drink. Side of guacamole is $2 which is reasonable. Cost to have a spread of guacamole on your burrito that is not equal to the size of the side is also $2. Figure that one out. The meat here is bland, bland, bland. No spice and no flavor aside from the grease. The tortilla on my burrito was so sweet and sugary that it completely overpowered everything, even my Sprite and I have had better pico de gallo out of a tiny metal can. This place is acceptable only under dire circumstances. If you want real, authentic Mexican foods, go to Guadalajara Grill on Dort. Their tacos shit all over this place. read more

After years of saying we should try this place, my wife and I finally did last week. We both got the chicken fajitas with corn tortillas. The chicken came out on a skillet, which is always the best way to go, with the usual green pepper, red pepper, onion combo and it had just the right amount of black pepper on it. It came out with some beans, rice, cheese, lettuce (which oddly enough had French on it, but I went with it and put it on my fajitas anyway and it added a nice tang, actually.
