Pasty's are authentic! Crust made the old Yooper way. There was a pasty maker from Negaunee Michigan that worked here. Sadly he passed years ago, but he successfully passed making of pasty's to the business owner. I was shocked to find out as a many year customer that I didn't notice his passing. Asked about him and found out he had passed several years earlier. I spent years in Houghton Hancock and would say this are as good or better than pasty's from Suomi cafe or Kaleva Cafe. Marquette had Red Onion and Madeline's pasties that were on par with these. So nice to pick up a frozen or fresh pasty locally! I am visiting here from Atlanta and I had a hankerin for a good pasty. I was ready to be disappointed. I was not. I had a beef pasty at Shier's and I was literally BLOWN away by the taste of it. It was a good size portion that filled up a big guy like me. The outside was made to perfection. Don't walk, RUN to Shier's and get a pasty today! I've only visited Shier's once on a weekday afternoon. There are minimal accommodations, you order from the counter. The place relatively clean. My menu selection was not available so I ordered something else. The pasty was OK. It was surprisingly expensive for what it is. And then, if you pay with a credit card, there is a screen to tip, with choices of which percentage. I guess this is becoming normal, but a bare bones pasty ended up costing about $15. We get their pasties pretty regularly. Top notch. Used to live in the UP and getting decent pasties without a trip past the bridge can be rough. These folks fill that niche. This is mostly a pasty review from the Pasty Guy, but this place deserves the five stars. It's a nice, small place with welcoming employees and owners. The pasty is at the top end of the chain providing a great crust as well as everything you need from the insides. If they can make good pasties, surely the rest of their sandwiches are on point. EXCELLENT little deli in Midland. Possibly even the best. They have a fairly extensive menu of both hot and cold "sammiches", all of which are excellent (at least of the ones I've eaten so far). Personally, the Reuben and "Smokey Joe" are my favorites. The dining area was very clean, the food was fresh yet made quickly, and the staff (even the kitchen staff in the "order up" window), made a point to greet you with a smile and a "welcome". Definitely another hidden gem this side of the Tri city area! The facade wouldn't wow you but when you get inside you'd be greeted with a fairly extensive menu for a deli. They have sandwiches (hot and cold), soups for the day, and Tex Mex offerings. Lest I forget, they have pasties too. That sets this place apart from the usual lunch offerings in the area. We tried the fish tacos and the chili. They were phenomenal! We'll be back for sure and we'll try the pasties! Just an update- we finally tried the pasties and they were great! So many delicious looking choices! Normally when I visit a deli I simply order an Italian sandwich. After reading the menu with all the choices I ordered the Italian! I wasn't disappointed. It was big enough for lunch and dinner. Hubby ordered the Marquette Co. sausage (can't remember the odd name they had) and he really liked it. I tasted it and it was good but didn't seem to have a lot of flavor for me. They make the sausage themselves too. The chili he ordered was however very delicious. I wouldn't mind returning and actually trying something else. The price though is a bit high for sandwiches. Two sandwiches, two sodas and a small chili came to $31. However, the sodas were the least expensive at $1.50 each so it was the actual food that was costly. The interior is very casual with low and high top tables. The staff is very friendly and seem to really like their own food because whatever I mentioned she said "I would recommend that". They are pretty quick too in getting your order out and it came out hot. Be prepared for the cost but I works recommend this for a good sandwich. read more

Hubby and I were staying in Midland, Michigan visiting family. Went here for dinner one night. It was Friday so the special was ribs. They were tender, fall off the bone, seasoned just right. The BBQ sauce was very tasty. Two others in our party had sandwiches. Both raved about how good they were. Lots of meat and homemade bread. The restaurant was small but clean. Staff was attentive. This place is the best deli in town. Great sandwiches, catering and pasties. They have a great carryout special (10 for the price of 9) on frozen pasties. Easy meal at home. Just pop them in the oven for an hour. The owner is usually on site and does most of the cooking. First class service and food. As good as the menu and the food is; the PEOPLE there are even better. Wonderful, friendly staff that enjoys their work The bbq ribs are excellent. The Rib Sandwich is really really good. The Club is terrific. Finally had a HOT beef pastie and must say it's authentic and the best I've ever had. Prices are a little steep and in my opinion the sandwich prices should include a drink and chips. Awesome deli sandwiches! They have a smoker out front that they use for the meats in their sandwiches and burritos. On Wednesday's they have pasties, which are also great! Lots of different types of sandwiches and the portions are large. The dining are inside is small and gets crowded around lunch hours, though. The French dip was the best I've ever had! read more

Wow! Bread baked everyday in house. I had a turkey sandwich on rye. Loaded with meat and all the fixings. We went after the lunch crowd, so easy to get a table. The young blonde woman working the counter was terrific. What a fantastic, helpful person she is. Truly enjoyed her job as did the people that worked back in the kitchen (could easily tell by the way they talked to each other). The young woman stepped out from behind the counter to collect trays,dishes, clean tables etc from the dining area and made sure we enjoyed our meal and if there was anything else we needed. The young woman at the counter happily put on a fresh pot of coffee for us today, and is always sweet and attentive. Her smile and sunny personality alone are worth coming in for. Today the cook came out from the back to tell us about the pasties and how to prepare them, and made some small talk about the local car show. Last week the gentleman who I believe is the owner waited on us, and was just as sweet. They literally treat you like family, which makes the food taste even better.
