I always tell my wife that most Mexican restaurants taste the same to me. This place is different! I have been wanting to try this for a while because more than one person has told me that it is the best Mexican around. We were not disappointed!! I had the Midway Burrito and it was delicious. The first thing that you notice is the bacon. I don't think that I have ever had bacon in a Mexican restaurant. The second thing that impressed me was grilled chicken that they put in there. Wow, it is good! Adding the chorizo is just another bonus! The creamy Serrano sauce over the top is perfect! It's spicy but not overpowering or too hot, just hot enough to make your mouth tingle and know that there is a nice kick. We look forward to going back and trying the Fundito next time. 6 of us went there last night around 6pm for dinner. As we walked in we noticed a couple open tables outside, and once inside several tables they could accommodate our group open as well. We were told there was a 30-60 minute wait, so we went to the bar for drinks. After 30 minutes we went to check in to see how much longer and were then directed to one of the outdoor tables that had been open the prior 30 minutes when we first got there. After placing our order, two other tables on each side of us with equal numbers were seated. They were served their food in about 20-25 minutes. We asked for the manager and then after another 15-20 minutes it slowly began coming out. The manager said he was going to "make it right," and when the check came only took off 25%. Poor customer service, wait time unnecessary are resolution didn't add up to the inconvenience. read more

While enjoying a long weekend on the Bourbon Trail, we discovered Don Jockey just around the corner from our Airbnb. As self-proclaimed connoisseurs of Mexican food, we always love trying new spots--and Don Jockey did not disappoint. I ordered one of my favorite dishes, a chorizo fundido. Not only was it delicious, but it arrived at our table in flames! I've ordered fundido in restaurants all over the country, and this was the first time it was served flaming. A fantastic surprise. My wife had the chicken mole enchiladas, and judging by her spotless plate, she loved them just as much. Our dining companions also enjoyed their meals, making it a great experience all around. One thing's for sure: the next time I'm back in Midway, I'll definitely be returning for another flaming fundido! read more

I have eaten dinner at/from Don Jockey three times. My experiences were very mixed. First time was in summer 2024 and we came in as a dinner party of six. We were with a couple who are regulars at Don Jockey and we enjoyed cocktails, appetizers and dinner and all was great. 5 stars. Was in Midway last week and earlier this week. Came in for a late dinner as a party of four. Ordered birria tacos (2 orders) and a burrito and some other tacos. Waitress was very good and the food was good, but nothing special. Ordered a very large to-go dinner order a few nights later, and the food was mediocre at best. I understand food is better in a restaurant, fresh onto your plate and table. But it was more than that. The quantities in the to-go orders were small and my fajitas had a teaspoon of guacamole and sour cream. Disappointing. I did not take pictures of any of these meals. read more

Ignore the fake positive reviews. Don't make my mistake and be fooled! Horrible food!! The rice was rock hard. I ordered beef fajitas medium rare and they were well done, and even worse the tiny razor thin strips of meat tasted rancid. I went here because my favorite restaurant next door Heirloom was closed. I will never make that mistake again. My favorite Mexican dish is chicken flautas and these were inedible and not even made with flour tortilla hence the name floutas. Worst of all, when we complained, the owner/manager became extremely hostile and threatening in Spanglish. The owner needs to take an anger management course. Instead of rectifying the situation they blamed the customer for meat that smelled and tasted rancid. Ironically I had a similar experience at Gracias and then I found out the same owner owns both places!!! This place was Midway's 1st Authetic Mexican restruant, situated by the local rail road. You mush try the handcut 12 ounce Black Angue Ribeye. It is grilled to preferect and was served over carmaelized onoins and poblano peppers and topped off with Don Jockey's signature house made chimichurris sauces. It is served with tortillas and side, I got the Charro Beans. My wife had the Burrito del mar, which is Grilled Grouper, black beans, cabbage, pico de galls all wraped up in a hot flour tortialls and covered with house white wine sauce, with fresh sauteed shrimp and cilantoro. You may want to try the Midway Burrito, and the salas is some of the best around Kentucky. Chips and salsa are included without us having to ask for them. They offer a wide selection of cold draft beer. Very friendy service with some classics and some very creative menu items as well. It is some times quite noisy inside, we will try outside the next time. The best margaritas the desserts are out of this world as well. Don Jockey NEVER disappoints! it is worth the drive. read more

The decor is more modern than most Mexican places, too, with abstract paintings and rustic lighting. My Quesadilla Jalisco arrived at the table on a sizzling platter, decorated with fresh salsa, sour cream and guacamole. I ate every bite. The hubs, who ordered a burrito, WISHED he ordered mine. We actually stopped in there about 11:30 a.m., hoping for huevos rancheros, but I didn't leave disappointed. We didn't drink, but the cocktail menu and tequila selection looked bomb. We each had a classic Margherita to start (half price on Mondays) and ordered the Guacamole to share. The waitress also brought salsa with the chips. I had two tacos, steak and al pastor. We called a few places off the highway to ask if they had Coke or Pepsi, and all said they had Pepsi. We kept driving and ran into the little downtown Midway area. I wish I could give more than 5 stars, I really do. Since I ate here last Friday I've been dreaming about when I can return (seriously). I was looking for reservations for a group of 8 to share a celebratory dinner. I was hoping to find a restaurant with a similar vibe to Corta Lima in Lexington. The staff was able to accommodate (during COVID) and ensure social distancing. The food was incredible. I ordered the nachos and they were the best nachos I have ever had in my life.
