I ordered 8 mini tacos over the phone, and when I arrived, there was a miscommunication and they made 8 full size tacos. I insisted that I would pay the full price of the tacos, but they told me it was okay and only charged me the price of the mini tacos. Talk about professional! I came to this place and when I came in it smelled very nice. When I ordered the workers were super kind. The service was relatively fast. It wasn't until I got a drink that I was disgusted. The soda fountain has some okay sodas and in the middle is a display of flavorings you can put in your water. I was there about an hour ago, and being a hungry pregnant lady I was really excited. I called in my order before hand for to go, asking for lengua burritos and carne asada fries. The fries were literally so crunchy and brown, I don't know how they could even serve them to people. Also, my "lengua burritos" were carnita burritos. CARNE ASADA FRIES!!!! My hubby and I lived in San Diego for 10 years, even have friends who own a popular Mexican restaurant there, so we know our Mexican food and this place is LEGIT! If you have never had carne asada fries do yourself a favor and order them immediately. You will consequently involve yourself in a life changing experience. Same thing with the California burrito. Fries in a burrito? Yes please. These are San Diego staples that we have not been able to find here, let alone done well. These are done very well! Rude service and food that is mediocre at best. Story and details included below! My boyfriend and I were walking around downtown Gresham and he was craving Mexican food. It was about 9pm and I checked Yelp to see what was around and open. Lo and behold! Chuy's Taco Shop just a block away and open until 10pm! We get there and order our food at 9:15pm. There were 2 other people sitting in the place eating their food. We place our orders and were planning on eating there since we had walked from home. As we were waiting for our food, some lights are turned off. I was thinking that they were getting ready to close...45 minutes early... okay so business is slow and after their last customers (us) eat and leave, they would turn off the "open" sign and head home. That's fine. At 9:23pm, we get our food handed to us in bags. By the way, the cashier never asked us if we wanted our food for here or to go. And telling us beforehand that they were only doing to - go orders at that point would have been nice and I could have made a conscious decision to go elsewhere or call for a ride back home, but no. We get our bags of food handed to us. I was sitting there for a few seconds trying to figure out where we were going to eat and then a woman who works there comes up to us and says something like, "We are trying to leave and close up here but we can't until you leave." Wow!!! What a way to be blunt! O-kay... So we grab our food and head outside. They had tables and chairs outside and I was thinking that maybe we could eat for a few minutes like civilized human beings before eating on the sidewalk or off of each others' backs, but two ladies now come outside to grab the tables and chairs right from under us and while they do so, they say to each other "wow I can't believe that we get to leave early today! This feels SO nice!" I was thinking, uhh yeah... At our expense! I was feeling pretty bummed and made a comment like "okay ill just eat off of this trash can over here!" But they either didn't hear me or they didn't care. Whatever. So we end up eating the food after all, and away from their crappy establishment and I was trying to not let my bias affect me too much. I got their veggie burrito which was comparable to Muchas Gracias, except worse and a dollar more. The tortilla wasn't as good as MG and the beans were refried and not black. So, cheaper quality. My boyfriend got a "supreme quesadilla" which was soggy and lacking flavor. And he also got the meatless breakfast burrito which is advertised as including potatoes, eggs and cheese. The "potatoes" by the way... are french fries! And not the good homemade kind either. Pre-packaged, once frozen french fries! And the egg, he said, reminded him of McDonalds, which is in no way a good thing. It just all tasted fake and manufactured. So, needless to say, I'll never be going here again. I felt like shit after getting kicked out and wish that they would have let us know beforehand that they wanted to leave early, but perhaps they didn't want to potentially lose business by scaring off customers and give them the option of choosing a different place to dine at. Just plain terrible business practices. And if the food was actually amazing, I might even consider returning despite the rude service, but with two negatives like that, never again. Passed this place many times and we finally made a stop. Cute place, friendly people, obviously family owned as some cute little kids took our order, while family supervised :) It was good for the price--not spectacular (I was saw the high ratings and thought it HAD to be awesome), but pretty tasty. I had the #1 special, it was a chicken burrito with rice and beans, plus a drink, for $5. That's essentially fast food prices (maybe even cheaper) for a pretty decent meal. I loved the rice and beans, the burrito actually came in second. It was pretty bland. I realize that they did have a small condiment area where I could have put salsa, etc. on it but I thought maybe there was going to be veggies/sauce toward the middle..nope. Just sparsely seasoned chicken and some rice. It was a LOT of chicken though, and super tender. They recently changed the name to Don Ladis Taco Shop, but don't let that fool you! Chuy is still there cooking and running stuff and the food is still 100% amazing. There are 3 things I order here. My number one favorite when I'm really hungry is the carnitas plate. I always get flour tortillas and extra guac. If you don't know what carnitas meat is, it's super tender, juicy, deliciously seasoned pork that is pan fried after cooking so the edges get just a tiny bit crispy. This place has some of the best carnitas in town. If I'm less hungry I just get the carnitas burrito; so tender and juicy and delicious! My other Chuy's favorite is the California burrito. They put steak and French fries in there, glue it together with cheese and add all sorts of yummy toppings. Get some avocado salsa from their serve yourself salsa bar and you're in for a real treat. I've never, ever had a bad experience here. Even when they're incredibly busy the wait is never too long and the food is always top notch. Order some taquitos while you're there, too. read more

For those of you unaware, this is the most legit "San Diego style" taco shop in the Greater Portland metro area (probably because that's where the family is from, haha). I have 3 kids myself, and they're always brimming with excitement if I mention the idea of going here for dinner. The absolute best carnitas I've ever had without going to a much higher end restaurant (and honestly about as good as some of the best I've had at higher those end restaurants) The most authentic Southern California style burritos where places like "Muchos Gracias" and "Don Pedro" fall so very short and fail miserably in comparison to Chuy's. I saw a couple misleading reviews here that were absolutely false, and these people are clearly naive to authentic Southern California style Mexican food, and don't know what they're talking about (but hey, this is like 2 reviews out of 30+ more that are all positive) Contrary to one of those reviews, the sauces are anything but bland, and are some of the most flavorful and unique you'll ever try. Their hottest traditional red sauce is there "roasted", and as the name implies it has a roasty delicious and complex flavor, rather than just land spiciness just for the sake of being hot. And their habanero which is orange in color is absolutely unique and delicious. Chuy uses fresh cloves of garlic through a garlic press (& I shouldn't say anymore than that (if maybe I shouldn't have even said that already to give away trade secrets). Fantastic value and maximum bang for the buck, amazingly delicious food, and some of the nicest people running the place of any restaurants around, so you'll feel right at home. As a native San Diegan, this is my little home away from home. And lastly I'll just simply say as a tool to everyone in the Portland area I tell about this place, the best taco shop in Portland is actually in Gresham ;) read more

Absolutely love this place! The gf and I eat here almost 2-3 times a week and can never get enough. The fish tacos are perfect and my personal fave is the fajitas burrito!! The staff is very friendly and the homemade sauces are amazing. Would and do recommend to everyone. Not what I was expecting at all based on all of the reviews. The carne asada fries were dry all they way around and an incredibly small portion for what you pay (come on guys, you can add more than a handful of fries to an order, my husband had more fries come with his hamburger.) the rolled tacos were about as bland as boiled meat and quite honestly the chile was terrible. Like straight up vinegar and enchilada sauce terrible. Not really the place for me, but they have a pretty steady flow of customers, are clean, friendly and pretty quick on getting your order to you.
