We had been wanting to try this place for quite some time. Unfortunately, our experience was not worth the build up. We started with an order of guacamole and chips, then moved to our entrees. I had the chorizo quesadillas and my girlfriend had the duck tacos. The entrees we got seemed to be more like appetizers. What's to say? The restaurants under the Bill Taibe group have certainly cracked the formula and yet each has an identity and justification for being all its own. This is no more highlighted by the fresh, vibrant and truly individual experience of Don Memo. The decor is understated yet memorable, soft woods, neutral earth tones, rustic tile, etc. Minimalist done very well. Far and away the prettiest of their portfolio as Kawa Ni lost a lot of its physical charm after the space expanded, ironically. But there is little to criticise and much to praise. The food is superlative. All of Bill's food has historically been very solid-- creative, beautiful, extremely tasty. This menu however is on a whole different level. Utterly exquisite, not a single off flavor, all plates stunningly presented. Our dinner: Lobster Tostada (insane), guacamole, soft shell crab tacos, mixed meat tacos and cucumber salad. Everything was sublime start to finish with the tostada being a clear highlight. Quatro Leches for dessert was also a major hit. One minor drawback; cocktails are good but predictable. On their own, they're very well made but viewed against those at their sister restaurant Kawa Ni, there is room to be more daring. The Al Pastor margarita, for example, could do with roasting the pineapple. Still, very enjoyable. Finally, I almost never comment on service unless it's remarkably bad however our server Allen was unusually impressive. Light, conversational, well informed and attentive. He's a man clearly in the right line of work. Pricey but quality and value are directly comensurate. 100% recommend. read more

Started off with a michelada and guacamole. This might be my first time having mint in guac. Pretty sure that's what I tasted. I was blown away by the halibut tacos. We celebrated our early Valentine's Day date night at Don Memo and it met every expectation we had. We were blown away by the freshness of all of the ingredients in both the cocktails and food. The beet and avocado salad was a unique but delightful flavor and texture combination that was topped with tahini, pistachio, and fresh mint. We won't be able to go back without ordering the chaquiles verdes as they were perfectly lightly fried and topped with a blanket of crema. The main events were our Milanesa de pollo and chorizo rojo sandwiches ...you can't go wrong with ordering either one! Each sandwich is unique in itself and you can't normally order at any other Mexican restaurant or deli. Not the greatest experience. Sat indoors, waited 10-15 minutes for a waiter to come over. In that time others were seated after. Those tables got service right away and received their food much earlier than us. Maybe it's that we don't look like the "typical" Westport folk and that's the reason for the poor service? What's interesting is that they include a standard 20% tip. I don't think that's a bad idea but you don't have much of a say if the service is terrible. The food was decent. We got tacos, which you have to put together yourself. Which is fine. Ultimately the tacos weren't much better than other, cheaper, taco joints. If I'm in the area, I'd much rather go to Valencia or even downstairs at Walrus Alley--much better service and more unique food. Ambiance was bla, typical Westport restaurant with none of the redeeming qualities (food quality, good service, etc) that other, similarly situated, restaurants have. read more

Wanted to love this place because I'm a huge fan of its sister restaurant Kawa Ni, but sadly left my dinner here feeling super disappointed. They were out of the yellowtail aguachile so per our servers recommendation we opted for the shrimp ceviche. When it came out, it looked beautiful, but as soon as I tried cutting into the shrimp I knew something was wrong. After closer inspection it was clear that the shrimp was completely raw -- obviously I know that ceviche is made with raw fish, but the shrimp is supposed to be soaked in lime juice or other acid to "cook" it before it's safe to eat. This was not the case here, the shrimp was a deep grey color and a slimy consistency...we would have gotten food poisoning if we ate it. At $26 for the dish it was just really not cool. Won't be returning here :( read more

I stopped in Friday for takeout but got there early to relax. The Picante Margaritas were great as usual and I decided to order Hamachi Ceviche while I waited...it was insanely good. It's not a traditional ceviche (there are other great options including Yellowfin Ceviche if that's what you're looking for), but more like a Hamachi Crudo - sashimi slices of this young Amberjack marinated with mandarin oranges, radishes, and citrus. Bill Taibe and Executive Chef Anthony Kostelis have done it yet again!! And for Taibe super fans like me, it's no surprise that they knocked it out park. They have a culinary gift where they're able to bring indigenous Mexican ingredients, flavors and techniques and combine it with their modern American flair to create really special cuisine. We dined on their spacious outdoor patio for my wife's birthday in Sept 2020, and got takeout last night and as with the rest of Taibe's restaurants the food was consistently delicious and well executed, even in takeout form. There is just something so honest and homey to Mexican cuisine. And here they elevate it to the causal, completely not pretentious fine dining experience you come to expect from their restaurants. A quick rundown of the amazing food we have tried here: 1. Guacamole - Served thick and chunky with no onions nor tomatoes. Bright, beautiful and refreshing, bursting with fresh herbs (mint maybe?) and copious amounts of cilantro. A guac on steroids that comes with thick round corn tortilla chips. You need a thick chip here to scoop up this dense guac. 2. Tuna Tostada - What a beautiful composition of fresh flavors that compliment each other perfectly. Clean, bright flavor notes are abound here, from the luscious fresh cubes of tuna, and the smokey subite spice from the habanero and chipotle paste. clean vibrant notes of citrus, chili, and spices, and each clearly displays the passion this chef team has for this culture and cuisinepickled scallion, habanero, chipotle 3. Chilaquiles Rojas - Probably my favorite dish we had that again screams Mexican flavors and culture, another great mix of cotija, cilantro macho, and a raw yolk to emulsify and bring each crispy yet creamy bite together. The elegance and distinctly Mexican flavors here is stuff dreams are made of. Check out my birds eye photo for some eye popping food porn. 4. Milanesa de pollo - A cemita (sandwich) where each bite is more delicious than the previous one. The pounded, flat chicken is breaded and fried to perfection, with the meat juicy and outer panko breading crispy. Again the contrasting textures and flavors from the avocado, cotija, salsa verde, and cabbage are all in perfect harmony. This cemita is big and filling, probably enough to feed a family of four! Haha. 5. Lamb Barbacoa Taco Placero - This rich yet not too gamey slow cooked shredded lamb will bring you to next levels of scrumptious taco bliss. The fresh made corn tortillas are a nice homemade touch too. If you love tacos, you'll really love this lamb barbacoa taco dish. Can't say enough good things about a restaurant that opened amid a pandemic where the restaurant scene is on the brink of complete failure. But it's the courage and passion of these brave souls that you can fully appreciate and feel by eating their food. Whether you're dining in or taking out, the raw emotion comes through and you'll have a new found respect for Mexican culture and cuisine. Very enjoyable. Outside dining around Westport is very magical these days with romantic lights and an European feel and flair everywhere. The menu is very confusing even for a foodie like me. We found ourselves googling some menu items having no clue what they were. But that's typical of this chef, which isn't meant to be a negative, he's very innovative. If you just pick and choose items from each and every section, you really can't go wrong. Many of the dishes come out family style anyway so you can share and taste many unique dishes. Very glad to have an alternative to Bar Taco. And for those of you who are still wound up in the Covid fear, they spaced the tables appropriately and did a nice job with indoor seating barriers. Oh, like the other reviewer, I do like the 20% tip added in. It's quite convenient though maybe it'd be nice to have it disclosed on the menu somewhere vs. thrown at you upon bill presentation. read more

The way don memo's uses seasonal local ingredients all while staying true to it Mexican roots is beyond exciting and innovative! The herb guacamole is so fresh and different all with keeping the flavors true. The salsa needs to be sold at the market it's so good! The Lobster tostada was on point, the ceviche mixto tostada was a complete flavor bomb! Scallops and shrimp were perfect! I can live on the cabbage salad alone! The broccoli salad reminded me of Jessup hall's broccoli salad but with Mexican roots! Bravo on that one! You can never go wrong with the chicken cemita. Thank goodness I was with a great crowd, we made best of it. My friends enchilada was brought to the table barely warmed, like it had been taken out of the fridge and put under heating lamp, cheese wasn't even melted, the inside of my mushroom quesadilla was cold and the corn tortilla was grilled too hard to cut. So LRoth and I had just finished up a pool sesh in the early afternoon. I wanted to check out a shop in Westport to grab a shirt. We ended up walking around after that and eventually got quite peckish. We randomly walked by this place and noted plenty of people sitting outside. It was a bit difficult to find a sign at first since the place kind of reminded me of an old church. We did find a sidewalk sign, and I had been wanting to try this place. We went quite early and were able to be seated outside without an issue without a reservation even on a Saturday. We started with some beverages. I had a watermelon basil aqua fresca. Great watermelon juice. A bit pricey at $12 though. We started off with a peach and corn salad. Fantastic. My favorite dish we ordered. Super light. Ripe peaches. Fantastic grilled corn. Nice lime vinaigrette. The taco are deconstructed. We had no idea. So we got a dish with carnitas and a dish with shrimp. The shrimp was with onion/peppers. A bit on the small side. It was served with a sauce that reminded me more of a curry dish. The carnitas were cooked fantastically. Juicy, crispy exterior, beautiful fat. The corn tortillas seemed made in house and were warm and soft but could hold their weight. Overall, this is a place I'd recommend and would definitely visit again. read more

Location is great, easy to access during the week for dinner. I was pleasantly surprised by the organization, very efficient from the efficient welcoming to the fast service. Why 2 stars then? 1st of all, the noise inside, very high despite the decent space between tables. Then, couple of minor issues such as the sticky table when we arrived, or the awkward stools that caused our next table neighbor to fall from it. Then comes the dinner itself. Very impressed with the guacamole, fresh, tasty with the little spice that makes it great. The cocktails were above average as well. Disappointment came from the food: the mushroom quesadilla we shared was a total failure to my liking, very thick and spongey. My wife had the ceviche, quite unhappy with the way it was prepared with large pieces of shrimps swimming in a forgettable sauce. On the other hand, kudos for the sardines. This was a very unique dish with a great combination of flavors. That would be the only reason for me to go back to this place. Largest disappointment: The bill. I can understand the higher price based on the location. However, I hated the '20% gratuity included for indoor dining' that is mentioned at the bottom of the receipt, totally unreadable at night. My husband and I love coming to Don Memo! The drinks are delish (def try the jalapeño Paloma or the spicy margarita) and the food cannot be beat! We always end up over ordering because everything is so good and we can't agree on what to share! The guacamole, foie gras tostado, and shrimp/octopus campechana (like a ceviche) are my favorite things to order but the chilaquiles verde and the chicken tamale are so freaking good too! However the prices and food bring this place down significantly. The portions are small for even one person, yet they boast about how it's "all about sharing". The lobster and tuna tostada are gorgeous, I rarely order foie gras but it's difficult to resist here. The ceviche is also delicious, and my all time favorite is the mole short rib tacos. Don Memo provides a fresh take on the Mexican cantina, with dynamic and unexpected flavors in each dish. Next we had the Campechana, a shrimp and octopus ceviche in a spicy tomato-citrus broth). Per the recommendations on Yelp and from our waitress we split the Beef Rib taco and it did not disappoint!
