Bartaco's Westport location has been one of my go-to spots for a while now, whether I'm meeting a friend for drinks or planning a casual date night. Their classic margarita never disappoints (with Tajín on the rim, of course), and the tacos are consistently flavorful and fresh. I almost always start with the plantains and chips with guacamole, which make the perfect shareable appetizer. There's truly something for everyone, even for those who wouldn't typically gravitate towards Mexican-inspired cuisine. That said, the service has become a bit hit-or-miss in recent visits. They are an extremely busy location so I understand the hustle. I was happy to see they brought back the traditional table-side ordering after a period of having customers place orders exclusively through their phones. The current hybrid approach is a much better. You get the more personal and professional experience of ordering with a server, while still having the option to pay or place additional orders through your phone if needed. Despite a few service inconsistencies, I'll definitely be back for another margarita and taco night soon! read more

This place has the absolute BEST tacos! The pork belly and mushroom tacos are melt in your mouth delicious . Better than Chefs Kiss! I'm obsessed! My mouth waters just thinking about them! When your GPs takes you here and says "arrived" and you are puzzled and confused because you cannot see the restaurant, just park and walk behind the brick buildings towards the water. I arrived on a beautiful late Saturday afternoon and was informed there was a 30 min wait for a table (make a reservation ahead) but I was easily able to get a seat at the bar. The bartender does ask for a card (and ID), but there was no extra service charge that I noticed on my final bill. That is how it should be. I ordered a margarita and love that the lime juice is squeezed right then and there; it was a superb and fresh tasting margarita! I was given a slip of paper to check off menu items to order, which I thought was brilliant. I ordered the street corn off the cob ( note that website menu differs from actual menu) and it came straight away. It was fine, but not sure I would get again. A while later the sesame ribeye and roasted duck tacos arrived. Both were moist and full of flavor, and the roasted duck just blew me away. I would come here again just for this. The tacos looked to be small, but were filled with lots of meat and I was more than satisfied. There were 3 bottled sauces that I did try but did not use on my taco, yet I do appreciate they are avaible and all are really good. Decor is nice and outside dining area seems very lovely with views of the Saugatuck river and bridge. The staff was bustling and hard working, but noticed none smiled or joked with each other or customers. They sure worked non stop. However, they were all professional and courteous. The restrooms and the establishment were clean and all seemed to run smoothly, which is impressive with the amount of continuous traffic. I will return and do recommend. read more

One of my favorite Tex-Mex places in CT. Fish tacos are incredibly good, as is the elote and the drinks are pretty nice. I show up 20 minutes past the indicated time because I know they are notorious for running behind, and they rudely say (with no apology), 15-20 minutes more. 40 minutes past your indicated pick-up time means either hire more people or get a better ordering platform. And the guac is less than one inch of a serving for $6.95 and they forgot the chips. Done with this place. read more

This is an update from a previous negative review. The staff at Bar Taco were knowledgeable and friendly. NIck, the manager, was accommodating and helpful. We ordered many things, some of the stand outs were the kale Caesar, duck barría, pork belly taco, and many more. Everything was fantastic. Tip: You need to park across the street in the garage and then walk behind the cluster of brick buildings in the direction of the river and you will find it. Bartaco's atmosphere is casual and light. Service is friendly. We didn't join the wait list for a table in advance and so the wait time would have been about 30 mins. We opted to eat at the bar, which offers full service. Bartaco definitely caters to a college-aged crowd, but the tacos are fresh and delicious. Here's how ordering works: You check off the items your whole party wishes to order on a slip of paper and give it to your server. My favorite was the crispy oyster taco, which features two fried oysters served with a remoulade and topped with a yummy lemon parsley slaw. We had a terrible experience with take out. The beef/steak tacos had hardly any meat and the beef tasted old and chewy. Really, really bad. The shrimp tacos had a spicy flavor that tasted more like a south Indian spice, almost like cumin, and not what was described, and again extremely small portion. The only thing we liked was the cucumber salad. One star for the cucumber salad and the employees we encountered were pleasant. Disappointing as we have had previous experiences that were fine. I've been to a couple Bartacos and the food is consistent across locations. This location is really nice, especially the seating overlooking the water. Service was attentive and patient - we took a little bit to decide what we wanted. People really love this chain and it's good don't get me wrong, I just don't think it's worth all the hype. My tacos on this day were really really spicy - caught me in the throat spicy and I do eat and love hot and spicy food but this was a little much. We also got guacamole and chips to start and the guac was very sour and lacking in other flavors, and the cups were just whole corn tortillas that I guess had been fried. Didn't love that presentation - you have to break up the chips to eat the guac. The prices were really reasonable though - and it was a nice spot for meeting up with an old friend and having time to chat and catch up. Great tacos, confusing ordering system. The food at Bar Taco is delicious and relatively affordable for the area. You can down a good 5-6 tacos if you're hungry, though. We tried the chorizo, Baja fish, crunchy shrimp, and ribeye - the ribeye was probably the favorite. The ordering system there is so complex and caused issues. We had food put on the table that wasn't ours, and that was then taken away. Our order wasn't properly entered. For those that don't know, you can either order using their QR code or by marking down on a paper what you want. We did the latter and that seemed to mess it all up. Had a great meal at bartaco. The pork belly with crispy rice was really good, and all the tacos were solid--baja fish, roasted duck, carne asada, mojo pork carnitas, and the retro chicken tinga. The street corn was a nice side, and both margaritas (spicy and the "green") were well made. Our server was also really attentive, which made the experience even better. The staff, especially the host, were extremely friendly, attentive and knowledgeable of the menu and process. I've been to the Bartaco in Boston and had a lovely experience. I will NEVER try to dine at the one in Westport ever again. Here is why: - Parking is a nightmare. You cannot get a spot here during the day or at night. You will probably need to park across the street, in the covered lot. Not great if you have a few kids to get over to the restaurant and you are solo parenting. - The wait times are ridiculous. Even if you call or email ahead to be put in the waitlist, it's still ridiculous. - After standing at the host stand without any acknowledgement from anyone running around there for about 5 mins, the host showed up. I asked if we could sit in the lovely outdoor area, where there looked to be 2-3 tables open. I was told that I would have a 20-30 mins wait time for that area. This is after already putting myself on the 30min waitlist ahead of my arrival. I said no thank you and we sat at another table, indoors, but close by to where I originally wanted to sit. No one was sat at that area for the duration of our meal there. Even after using the restroom and leaving, no one had been sat there. I thought that was really disappointing and sitting outside was the main reason that I had wanted to eat at Bartaco in the first place. It was not packed inside either. - The waitstaff is very young and need more management on the floor, directing them. There is a lot of running around and busywork happening, even when there are many empty tables. It's about focusing on the right areas of service, not just service service service. - I was automatically charged for a large guacamole with two sauce sides without being asked if I wanted them. I have young children who don't want to eat spicy sauces. If I had realized there was an option to order the guacamole without being charged for the sauces, I would have made my preference clear. But when you are trying to manage 3 kids, solo, at the table, while trying to order at the same time, you're only going to have so much attention to detail. - The kids meal is great here. It came out quickly. My two, very small, "adult" street tacos took almost 25 mins to come out. My children were practically done eating by the time my food came out and I didn't get to enjoy eating with them, instead, I had to wolf them down while managing them being finished with their food. - The bathroom was pretty dirty. I didn't feel comfortable using it. - I think my server could tell that I wasn't happy and she tried to "friendly-away" my vibe, but I was already so disappointed by the whole experience. I'm never going back here. It was a waste of time and money. It's a shame because the location is very picturesque and the food is decent. But, there are other Mexican venues in the area that are much better than this one. read more

Fish Tacos = Food Poisoning. I was a fan of Bartaco for years--that was until I recently visited the restaurant and ordered the Baja tacos. Two hours after leaving, I became violently ill from food poisoning and spent the entire night / early morning vomiting. Unacceptable. Clearly, the kitchen staff / this restaurant is no longer concerned with storing their seafood at the mandated temperatures to prevent foodborne illness (either that or I was served spoiled seafood). Regardless, I was the only one at my table who ate these tacos, and I was the only one who ended up with food poisoning. Figures I was the one who recommended that we go to Bartaco to my group and clearly now regret that decision. To the management team at Bartaco I advise that you get your kitchen in order, before you continue to make MORE PEOPLE SICK. 2/7/25 UPDATE The business owner has the audacity to reply to my review, claiming that they "take these matters very seriously." Yet, when I emailed the owner, Michael, at the provided email msobelman@bartaco.com on 1/24/25, he never had the decency to respond. Clearly, this owner is only concerned with saving face in public and couldn't care less about actually addressing the situation. If an owner cannot be bothered to reply to an email after 14 days, it speaks volumes about how this restaurant is operated. read more

Highly recommend bartaco. Very causal dining but the food was fresh and delicious. I had all the seafood tacos except the shrimp. My favorite was by far the crispy oyster taco. The chips and quac was delicious as well. Service was good and the waitress explained how their dining works. Ambiance is nice laid back.
