We have been going to this place when it was Las Ponchos in the 70s and 80s till early 90s when it changed to Don Ponchos. Back in the 70s you got 6 rolled tacos for a dollar. We miss those days. We left IB in the early 90s but every time we visit including the 2 weeks we've been here now for a college graduation, we've gone there three times and it's 25 minutes away from us. We get our food, eat it in the car, and then we go out the strand through Coronado and over the bridge back to the RV park we are staying. This place does not get the love it deserves. I went again today after awhile of going almost daily for my cali burrito fix... I will say I love the burrito n everything but sometimes the food lacks in consistency from what ive noticed. first couple times it was the salsa, I would have a different favorite every time I went because they would taste different each time and today it was the guacamole. It didn't taste how it usually does, tasted like pure avocado, not the creamy, fresh and well salted like how I remembered. and maybe it was a bit overripe, thats what it reminded me of, and not seasoned as well. I got the orange habanero salsa only this time and thats forsure the spiciest of the 3, so just know that its pure spice central when it comes to the orange one. will go back considering I've liked them before, but will definitely not forget to ask for sour cream and guacamole on the side like I usually do. however for the price and flavor of the meat, and the bonus of the nice interactions I have with the front house, ill be back just was a little disappointed today about the guac. read more

This place is amazing. Basically a takeout taco shop with tables outside. Used to go here years ago, but just revisited. Their fish tacos are wonderful. Their shrimp Diablo is really tasty. And their carne Asada burritos are quite good as well. I actually wonder if they do anything that's not good here. Salsas are good too. Rice and beans are authentic and amazing. Parking lot is small. I got a carne asada burrito. It was not the biggest nor had the most ingredients, but it was already sinfully juicy and tasty with just the steak, guacamole, pico de gallo, and salsa. You could say that, with flavor, sometimes less is more. The smaller size allowed the wrap to leverage the umami without needing rice or beans as much. Also, these are cheaper than most burritos I've had recently, so you're not really losing money. Some burritos in town are kinda....huge anyways, and I say that as someone who can eat three of these if I want to. A 3.7 average is somewhat low for Yelp, but I already had a co-worker rave about this place, and I am cursed to drive by it on my way home from work. And reviews are often the victim of what I would consider a form of volunteer bias. People with a 3 star experience simply aren't motivated to write reviews. I can't say this is as impressive as Chula Tacos, but there is something about the vibe that makes me want to give it a higher rating. Stopped in on my way home to grab some fish tacos to go. They were still warm when I sat down to eat, and everything was great. The rice is honestly some of the best I've had from any local taco shop, and the beans were delicious too. The fish was well-seasoned with a nice coating, and the white sauce was super tasty. Visited SoCal for a wedding this weekend so as the saying goes, "When in Rome ..." Being so close to the border, we wanted some Mexican food! Don Panchos is one of those places that has not disappointed me once. I hadn't been to Los Panchos in many years. I've been here a few times in the last 3-4 months. Today I had their Cali Burrito (add pico de gallo and extra crispy fries) I think Los Pancho's California Burrito can compete with any in town. I think it's in my top 3 now (2. Lolita's - 1. Crack Taco Shop). Could be #1 too though. I gotta check again. First bite I can taste carne and not 5 layers of folded tortilla. I think their carne asada is nicely marinated before. It has that true carne asada taste to it. You can actually see grill marks on the carne(you can see it in the pic). I don't like food that argues with me. The carne asada does not argue with me at all. Very soft and tender. I ordered the fries extra crispy and they were perfect. I also added pico de gallo. The burrito comes with cheese, guacamole and sour cream. The carne to fry ratio is perfect. They add the right amount of guacamole and sour cream. Every bite is delicious. It was easy to finish the burrito. I felt energized after eating it not sleepy and sluggish. Good amount of meat less tortilla and fries. The salsas at Los Panchos are definitely stars. They have 3 salsas RED, GREEN and HABANERO. The RED salsa is one that has depth and attention to detail. Very diverse. That's the kinda salsa you can use to dip chips in, use for a family carne asada, chilaquiles, chiles rellenos etc. The GREEN salsa is perfect for tacos. It has a lightly sour taste in a good way. It has a nice lime taste, which is perfect with carne asada. The HABANERO always surprises me. I always think it's gonna be too spicy but it isn't. It's cool to taste habanero pepper and not kill my taste buds for the rest of the day. I really enjoyed this salsa. Good service. Exactly what you would expect out of a taco shop that's used to big crowds. They are efficient. The ambiance is very old school. Small parking lot, a few tables outside and a few more inside. chill vibe while you wait for your food. Everyone does a half circle by the windows and just stare at the windows. If you're visiting San Diego, this is a local gem. Mainstream will not tell you about places like this. Highly recommend read more

This morning we decided on Don Poncho's taco shop for breakfast. We ordered 7 breakfast burritos total. 4 breakfast burritos that came with bacon, sausage, ham, eggs, potatoes & cheese. 3 bacon breakfast burritos (we added beans) that had all of the above minus the other meats. Everyone was more than pleased with the taste and size of the burritos. There is onsite parking and an order window in the front of the building where you order and a window on the right to pick up your food. There is also a small indoor dining room, with the entrance being on the left side around the corner when facing the building, where you order at the window inside. On the right side of the building there is an outdoor seating area that is currently under construction. The staff is always friendly and the place is constantly busy but not too busy to get your food & go quickly. Prices are reasonable and a good value and size. We've been going to Dan Poncho's for the last eight years always loving it but unfortunately, the last two times we went we got our usually California burritos both times first time we both ended up with food poisoning.
