Don Papa Grande is a solid establishment that welcomes you in with its branded embroidered decor and warm environment. Every time I try a New Mexican restaurant, I go with my faves, a chimi and a marg. The chimichanga was good, it was very similar to La Carreta, another Virginia staple. I was happy to see a heaping scoop of guacamole upon it as well! The beans weren't my favorite though as they had an almost sweet tang to them. Not terrible, just not my cup of tea. Now the margarita is something to talk about! They come in three sizes, small-large. The large, being a 32oz behemoth was not for me on the day we went as I didn't want to stumble outta there. I went with the medium, a respectable 24oz. Flavor wise, it is very citrus, lending to a combo of lime and orange. And lemme tell you, that drink goes down smooth! You almost don't taste the liquor, but you surely feel it. The star of the show was the chips and salsa...you...just, can't stop eating them... Delicious food I ordered a queso fundido, plain queso, and a burrito with ground beef inside and queso drizzled on top, and it was all delicous. They have a white sauce and salsa for your chips, but I don't recommend the white sauce it might be good to some people, but me and my family and I do not like it. The waiters are very kind and get all the orders correct. When you walk in, you'll see they have a little bar, a little stand where you put your head in and take a picture, and candy at a counter for a little extra money. They came with 4 enchiladas- chicken, beef, cheese, and beans. The cheese and bean enchiladas were by far my favorite because the meat ones were sort of dry. The drink menu was just as extensive and had a lot of great choices as well. The Mexican trash can will have you more than tipsy. Even the waiter gives you a warning and cautions you when ordering. The coctel de camaron was delicious. The tomato base is quite flavorful. The chorizo taco was tasty and not too spicy. The chorizo was fried with a slight crisp just how I like it The fish tacos were amazing. I do not typically order fish tacos but I am so glad I did. The grilled tilapia was cooked perfectly and the chipotle dressing was the perfect finish to the tacos. The white rice was the best rice I've had from any Mexican restaurant in this area. Texture and seasoning was on point. Restaurant has plenty of seating. It was not understaffed. Fast and Attentive service from our waiter. I am updating my review as I have been in for lunch a couple of times and have now brought my family in. As previously stated the margaritas are great and so is the queso appetizer. We have had a much better experience with the same waitress on our recent visit than we did previous. The fajitas are delicious, as are the sides and everything it comes with. We also tried several of the desserts which were also very good. We would both recommend and return in the future. I don't know where to start. My boyfriend and I moved to the area from Michigan one year ago, & this was the first restaurant we went to. Food was stellar. Service was on point. Prices are more than reasonable. And most importantly- EVERYTHING IS CONSISTENT!! There has not been ONE TIME we have left disappointed. I want to give a special shoutout to our regular server, Gio. since covid, the prices have really increased, and the food has gone downhill. it's become more American, not even a Tex mex flavor. the last few times weve been, the food has been bland today we ordered just a medium cheese dip ($11) to go for a quick appetizer and it literally tastes like melted American cheese. you can see a few peppers floating but you can't taste them at all. in addition, they don't include chips with the larger dips anymore. For simplicity sake, made my first stop here to pick up food for the family and a friend. Entering the place you find your typical Richmond Mexican Restaurant. Although there was no line, it looked like all of the tables were occupied, giving me a false sense of hope. I ordered two quesadillas and one burrito, with a side of rice to go. The meat that filled each of these items was a bit tough and had a little too much fat. The portion on the burrito grande was a tad small by the standard set in Richmond and the salad that typically comes with the burrito was quite limited. The topping and filling were both what you come to expect in a Richmond burrito, although there really wasn't anything that enhanced the taste. The side of rice and bag of chips were also small, but otherwise are what you expect tastewise. On the plus side, the staff and owner were pleasant. With so many other Mexican choices, including at least one other within a mile of this location, it is doubtful that we would frequent this establishment in the future. read more
