I drove down to the airport to pick up a visitor. I do not drive around town enough anymore to remember where things are. We were hungry and I missed the turn for some of my usual spots. We randomly picked Don Pedro because it looked good. We were not disappointed. We had the pastor tacos which come with beans and rice. Order at the counter, find a table, and wait for your order to be called. The inside is clean and bright and the wait was not long. The food is delicious! The pastor was spicy and tender. The beans were amazing. If you have read any of my reviews you know the beans can make or break the review. These were creamy and flavorful and I really liked them. The rice also was good. I like a restaurant with a salsa bar and here we had one. It had some good toppings for the food and made everything even more enjoyable. I've been coming to Don Pedro multiple times throughout the year and usually enjoy the food, but my recent experience was extremely disappointing due to the cashier, Kathy. I had placed my order over the phone and came in to pay. Kathy was at the register helping other customers, but when it was my turn, she suddenly walked away from her station. She had just helped two people in front of me, and then the customer behind me was helped by another cashier, while I was left standing there until I had to call someone over just to pay for my food. After finally paying, I sat down and waited patiently, but I noticed two people who came in after me received their food first. I continued waiting, thinking maybe the kitchen was just busy. After about 20 minutes, I went to ask about my order, and that's when Kathy grabbed my bag from the pickup shelf where it had clearly been sitting for a while. No one had called my name or let me know my food was ready. I told her politely that since it had been sitting there, I didn't want cold nachos and would prefer a fresh order. She said something in Spanish to the cook, had it remade, and handed it to me without saying a single word no apology, no acknowledgment, nothing. She was friendly and polite to other customers, telling them to have a nice day, but completely ignored me and acted as if I was the problem. I've supported this restaurant for a long time, but this experience was frustrating and disrespectful. Management needs to train their staff, especially cashiers like Kathy, on how to treat all customers with the same respect not just certain ones. read more

This place is the bomb !!! Authentic Mexican food in Atlanta is hard to find but I found it here ! I'm from California so I'm very picky on my Mexican food ! Went there yesterday and food is very good and authentic, but I have three suggestions. First, they should have metal utensils for dine in customers. It doesn't do justice to the dishes to have to eat a steak, burrito, fish, with flimsy plastic cutlery. You have to saw away as the knife bends and that's not commensurate for a $17.00 entree. Also they should have ground beef which they do not. Finally at the Norcross location they have this giant "convenient store style" plexiglas shield/barrier which needs to come down. Hands down the BEST and most consistent place for tacos. Authentic and flavorful. This place is clean and feels like home for us and it's a must if you like tacos. The service is quick even for drive through. But I like to dine in to take advantage of their salsa bar. Usually we stick to the tacos; lengua (to die for) steak, pastor, cabesa, all of it! In honor of Hispanic Heritage month and First Taste Friday, I decided to try Don Pedro. Apparently, there are a total of three Don Pedro restaurants in the area, but this one was the closest one to me. I've seen all of the great reviews on here, so I've been wanting to try this place for awhile. I phoned in the order and initially, they picked up the phone in Spanish. However, I was thankful that they were able to understand me and take my order correctly with no issues, as my Spanish is super rusty! I ordered everything in English. My fiancé picked up the order inside the restaurant with no problems either, although there is a drive thru window on the side of the building that I might use next time. He said the inside of the establishment looked cozy and inviting. Lots of families were coming in to eat on a Friday night, so I'm glad we did take-out though as we are social distancing still. Everything was so fresh and tasty. I would order every single item again. The beef enchilada plate had just the right amount of spice to it and the two salsas that came with it were delicious. The caldo de res (beef soup with clear broth) that I ordered for the first time was so comforting! It reminded me of Filipino beef bulalo soup crossed with chicken papaya soup from back home in Hawaii that I've had. The green chayote squash that is used apparently can be substituted in chicken (with green papaya) soup, so that's why it tasted so similar. The fresh corn tortillas that came with the soup was also a nice, authentic touch. I also ordered a chicken taco - perfectly cooked and traditional with cilantro and onion (you can order cheese and sour cream on the side of you want, but it wasn't needed). And for dessert, some good ol' flan that my fiancé was able to pick out for me from a dessert case, apparently. Overall, a great way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month and First Taste Friday; I have found a new favorite restaurant and dish (the caldo de res). I'm looking forward to ordering again sometime soon and would highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for flavorful, authentic Mexican cooking. read more

Ok, ok. Don Pedro deserves at least 4 stars, I admit it. Reading my previous review and remembering my most recent experience, the 3 star review warrants an update. Tacos are cheap and on point. Nothing to complain about in that department. And the flan is MUCH better than other Mexican restaurants I've been to. As others have mentioned, a lot of other dishes will disappoint, but the tacos are a solid 4 star based on price and taste. Their salsas taste fresh and the wait for your food after ordering at the register is mostly bearable. Also, it's "flaaaan" not "flahhhhn." Otherwise, the lady at the register will not understand. I went up to the ordering counter and asked to see a menu. The girl just nodded her head in the direction where they were. I didn't see any tamales on the combination menu. Tacos! Tacos! Read all about it. Being a native of Southern California I have experienced some really good tacos viz. El Taurino and King Taco in Los Angeles. I used to eat carne asada tacos and burritos nearly every day in California and coming to Georgia I was a bit disappointed there were not many good places to grab an authentic Mexican taco. That all changed when I discovered Don Pedro's. I was happy to find that Don Pedro's served some authentic Mexican tacos with all the necessary sides such as fresh pico de gallo, cilantro and onions, green and red salsa. Throw in some delicious drinks including my favorite horchata and you have yourself a delicious Mexican meal. Seating is plentiful but parking is limited. My wife and I make it a point to stop by here anytime we are in the area for a delicious treat. 4.75 stars rounded down for me and which can easily become a 5 soon. Love this place. read more

Not only that but the pictures were just as lovely, so I was hoping the taste was good too. I got the #16. The chicken burrito with beans and rice. When I got my food it looked just like the big burrito I saw on Yelp! Tasted great! My favorite was the rice and beans, though. They were everything I wanted and more. Don Pedro has 3 locations. This location was cool. It had a few patrons inside and the cashier was cool. My only complaint would have to be that I asked for a side of queso and they gave me shredded cheese. So, when I then asked for cheese dip, it was $5.29 for the smallest container I had ever seen from a Mexican restaurant. So, I ended up not getting any but other than that.. the food was pretty good. DANGEROUSLY CONVENIENT. My favorite taco place got an internal facelift over a year ago updating the look of their menu, displayed over the counter where you order before sitting down. They added a flat screen tv and I no longer see the sign that reads 'no drugs, no alcohol and no firearms' that hung over the salsa bar. The double layer corn tortillas with your choice of meat and then topped with fresh onions and cilantro stay on your breath all night and I don't care! My favorites are the beef and chicken tacos, mulitas and the torta. Add salsa, pickled onions and carrots and dive in. The torta is a generous size with soft bread - a perfect picnic sandwich now that we're heading into spring. Went to Don Pedro last night with 13 others for the latest Buford Highway UYE (http://www.yelp.com/events/norcross-buford-highway-uye-don-pedro-mexican-restaurant). This was the furthest north we've traveled on BuHi yet. Don Pedro offers 20 different authentic Mexican meals ranging from $5.29 to $9.99. Along with typical tacos, burritos, and quesadillas, they also serve tortas (Mexican sandwiches), menudo (soup made from beef stomach), "mar y tierra" (land and sea - steak and shrimp), caldo de res (beef and vegetable soup), and pechuga a la grill (grilled chicken breast). You can also order items a la carte. Examples include tacos for $1.19 each and mulitas (taco sandwich) and sopitos (little sopes) for $2.29 each. Everything is a reasonable value. Meat choices include asada (steak), pollo (chicken), pastor (spicy pork), lengua (beef tongue), cabeza (spicy beef), barbacoa (BBQ), and picadillo de pollo (minced chicken). I ordered a steak sopito, steak mulita, beef tongue taco, and spicy pork taco. I also had a chicken taco and spicy beef taco. The first four items were filling enough, but Emily R. offered up her tacos to me and I couldn't turn them down. I ate too much and left completely stuffed. Three to four tacos should suffice for most people. The sopito was a smaller version of a sope, which is sort of like an open-faced taco with an extra thick tortilla shell on the bottom. The shell was made of corn and was dense with the consistency of a cold baked potato. Toppings on the sopito included shredded cheese and lettuce, chopped tomato, beans, avocado, and steak. I wasn't a big fan of the tortilla base, but the rest of the sopito was good. The meats in the sopito, mulita, and tacos were tasty and well-marinated. The mulita is almost like a taco, except instead of folding the tortilla shell over like a taco, two tortilla shells are used to make a flat, round sandwich. The tortilla shells are toasted to give them a bit of firmness so the sandwich doesn't fall apart when you eat it. Some of the ingredients inside my mulita included melted cheese, lettuce, steak, and chunks of avocado. The avocado was fresh and delicious. I enjoyed all the tacos and preferred the beef tongue and spicy pork over the chicken and spicy beef. The tacos are served with two soft tortilla shells, cilantro, onion and nothing else (e.g. no cheese). I liked the slightly more rubbery (yet appetizing) consistency of the tongue and the spicy pork was quite savory. There is a self-serve bar with a variety of salsas and pickled vegetables and peppers. The salsas were good and ranged from sweet to spicy. Drinks are $1.75 each and come self-serve from fountains. They have a standard soda fountain with drinks like Coke and Fanta and also have juice machines with drinks such as tamarindo, jamaica (purple hibiscus tea), and horchata (cinnamon rice drink). I recommend one of the Mexican drinks such as the horchata. Service was great. There was a mad rush of people around 7:15pm last night, but the manager was able to turn around orders quickly. All of us got our food in a short amount of time. Because we had such a large group, the manager opened up the back tables for us. Don Pedro is located in its own standalone building. You can't miss the light-up sign for the restaurant heading up or down Buford Highway. Inside is clean and has two nice TVs tuned to Spanish-speaking channels. This location has been around since September 2001. A second location opened in Lilburn in 2009. read more

Sometimes there is a language barrier, but 9 out of 10 they know what I'm ordering and asking for. 4/5 for the food and 5/5 for the customer service.
