Walked in and the owner/cashier made a face because we had a party of 6 with 2 children.(bringing him Business) He was rushing us while we ordered, though it was our first time there. He seemed to get a long with caucasian people the most, making jokes and laughing. I don't mind that at all, if you treated everyone with respect and great customer service . Then he said he was going to put the orders on different checks, despite us telling him it was all going to be paid together. He was doing that, so the servers won't get confused when they brought us our food. (his words not mine) We ordered half our food and stepped aside so he can get the rest of the lines order(2 Caucasian people),when he took their order his attitude changed completely. we stepped aside to give him some time to fix his his attitude and demeanor because it was making us upset. He seemed frustrated and eager to finish taking our order. So we come back in line after the 2 people finish finish ordering and still no change in his attitude towards us. . We finish ordering. And sat down. Guess what the servers did? Yup they got everything confused at the time of brining our food. So his method of putting everything on different tabs was a fail. Mind you he made a face like we were stupid when we told him we wanted everything in one check while he was starting different checks. So that was that for customer service I give it a -10 especially because the owner was the one taking our order. He is supposed to lead by example. Come to the food nothing was "authentic". Chilaquiles were literally tortillas with hints of sauce that you buy at the grocery store. Authentic salsa would have made them a bit better. Menudo needed more salt than the Galveston beaches hold. They were so stingy with there vegetables and limes for tacos. Nothing was "authentic". I didn't try the tamales because they didn't have any. The "home made tortillas"were not thoroughly cooked! I took a bite and u can still feel the texture of the corn flour! The quesadilla was so small, my infant could hold it in one hand. Everything I tried lacked flavor, and salt. Food was so simple I think I cooked better when I was in elementary school. Horchata wasn't the best either. Food I give it 1 star because that's the lowest grade possible. Oh I almost forgot, the tables were so crooked and un-léveled that they don't serve you a full plate of menudo because it can spill when you place it on the "flat surface." I was staying in a Airbnb close by and just happened upon this restaurant while searching for a place for breakfast. I ended up eating breakfast here three days in a row, tried something different each day, Huevos Divorciados, Migas (with the homemade Chorizo), and breakfast Tacos the last day. Everything I tried was very good.The salsa is homemade and delicious, perfect amount of heat. This is one of the cleanest restaurants I've been in, the kitchen is open and you can see that it's spotless along with the seating area. The same gentleman waited on me each day, and he was the cook also, he was helpful and efficient. My only regret is that I won't be back to this area until next year, I'm already looking forward to trying some of the other things on the menu. read more

As a Mexican and true foodie, I can confirm that Tamales Don Pepe is flat out the best and most authentic Mexican restaurant in Houston. I kid you not, I have been going to Tamales Don Pepe at least once a week since I discovered it. I couldn't give a better review. The food is wonderful. After reading such great reviews and craving chilaquiles! I Just had to stop in here today for a leisurely, rainy-day breakfast. I may have come to try the chilaquiles but to be honest, there were many things on the menu I WANTED to taste...but I followed my first mind and ordered the soft, chewy, crispy tortillas tossed in a perfectly seasoned tomatillo salsa topped with cheese, crema and 2 perfect over easy eggs. Wife and I stopped in for lunch. I had the tamales oaxaqueños which is a flat, rectangular tamale about 3 inches square with shredded chicken inside and a dark, rich mole sauce on the side. My DW had huevos con chorizo breakfast which she declared to be delicious. The tamale was also excellent but the mole was unbelievable! It was slightly sweet but also savory, very complex flavors-kind of hard to describe but in a really good way. The place is in a slightly unappealing strip center but the restaurant was spotless. The owner was very friendly and helpful. Everything is produced fresh there. The prices were very low, two tamales and breakfast was less than $16. The owner said they have only been in business for 4 months so please visit them and give them support so they stay in business. First time trying this place and this is one of those hidden gems in the neighborhood that I will be coming back to. I tried 3 varieties of tamales (chicken with green and red sauce and the pork) and beef fajita tacos which were made fresh to order. My favorite of the tamales were the chicken with red sauce and the pork coming in second. The masa was moist as the chicken was flavorful as well as the pork although I found it a tad dry but still enjoyable. I liked all of the sauces and the taco sauce had the right amount of heat. I just tried this restaurant for the first time today. I had the pastor taco on a flour tortilla which was good to above average. The real story here is the Oaxaquenos Tamale (made with chicken) and the mole sauce that comes with it. It was sweet and delicious! Absolutely amazing. Oh and of course if it's in the name of the restaurant you have to try it the tamales were out of this world the pork with green sauce was my favorite, but the chicken with green sauce and chicken with red sauce were out of this world, as well! Upon entrance, there is a very large menu displayed across the wall. Your meal is ordered at the counter and brought to your table when ready. The owner was very attentive and made sure that our food was to our liking. Approximately 8-10 tables in the restaurant. My father and I went for brunch this morning. We ate at the restaurant, but we noticed several takeout orders during our visit. We shared an order of chilaquiles and added on 2 fried eggs and 4oz of beef fajitas. The meal was absolutely outstanding! These were the best chilaquiles that I have ever had in the Houston area. The plate was generous in portion, fed both of us and our bill was less than $13. Super clean little place, oh my gosh so glad to have found it. We shared a green chicken tamale, grilled chicken tostada, mushroom quesadilla which we all fresh and delicious. However, you must try the Tinga flautas. $3 each, they are huge, super crispy and superbly dressed in a spicy green sauce with cheese, lettuce and sour cream. We are always looking for a really good breakfast/brunch place and, happily, we have now found the spot. I am completely unbalanced about the Pepe's Breakfast plate - it is yummy and I fear that, like a certain coffee house whose name I will not mention, some addictive ingredient is added to this delicious offering because I have to indulge myself a minimum of once a week! I'm told that the tamales, empanadas, chilaquiles and quesadillas (among other menu items) are great but I can't bring myself to order anything other than Pepe's Breakfast. I live up the road and have been meaning to check them out given all the great reviews so we had lunch here on Tuesday when my parents were in town. We all loved the food and the tamales were authentic, delicious and HUGE not to mention...super affordable! I also had an empanada that was also great. The owner served us and he was a little busy doing everything so service could be a bit little better but I think those kinds of things will work themselves out as they have only been open a few months.
