We came in after a day in the rainforest on a busy Wednesday night. We got greeted by a nice woman and she showed us to our table. The band on the second floor was energetic and lively. Our server came out immediately and asked us if we wanted water or another drink. Then we ordered our food. We got appetizers and for my dinner I got the Red Snapper Fillet. The wait was a little long. They gave us samples before the food came. The Red Snapper Flillet was pretty good, the plantains were descent, but the rice and grouper were on another level. My mom thought the margaritas were amazing. Everybody in the restaurant was nice and we had a great time. I do recommend coming if you have more than 1.5 hours of time. read more

After eating resort food for a few days, we were craving authentic PR food. Came to Don Pepe on Mothers Day and were lucky to get seated inside right away. Unfortunately, it was right in front of the A/C so it was pretty chilly but still better than being out in the rain. We ordered the arroz con pollo and the mofongo with churrasco. Food took a while (~45 minutes) but it was worth it. Steak was perfectly cooked and was a perfect pair to the mofongo. Arroz con pollo was a little bland but nothing a little salsa couldn't fix. Portions were great. Maybe consider ordering an appetizer or a drink or two while waiting for the mains. read more

We took the trip down the mountain from the resort for a change of pace. $10 taxi each way. And to save our budget. It's a very small space so def call for reservations during a weekend. Locals go here as well. They have an outside patio and an upstairs. Gaming as well. Very small bar inside first floor and small tables. He had the plantain fried chicken and loved it. This restaurant is located in El Palmer which is the town you pass through to get to the entrance of El Yunque. You might miss this place as its next to Dos Panzas which is huge. A local who lives in El Palmer recommended Sushi Bar, Don Pepe and Don Panzas (Mexican Food) as three places that have good food. We wanted to try Puerto Rican cuisine so Don Pepe was our choice. This place is small but it has a very well stocked bar. As such, the drinks are tasty. We got drinks and an appetizer while we waited for takeout. I got the Caribbean Mule and an empanadilla de ropa vieja while I waited for my order. The empanadilla was piping hot and the hot sauce that came with it also packed a punch. But it was the perfect snack and drink to have after a long hike to the Picachos peak of El Yunque. For dinner, I had the ossobuco special. We ordered the assorted appetizer. My wife ordered the scallops with garlic sauce for her entrée and I ordered the breaded steak with cheese and creole sauce. I accompanied it with rice and beans. All of this food was excellent. The assortment gave us a true sense of various Puerto Rican foods. The breaded steak was tender and crispy and was grande. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her scallops. The best Chuletas I've ever had! It was also the largest. For the $25 price of was definitely worth it! The service was fast, but they did get our order wrong and forgot some side dishes that we simply requested again and was immediately served after. We ordered the fillet snapper and was served the whole fish. We didn't want to be a nuisance and just took it since it was only a few dollars difference on the menu. When we received our check, turns out the snapper was $50...the price was PER LBS not per fish. One Word: Delicious This place was recommend to me over and over while vacationing in San Juan. After a long day at the Rainforest we stopped in for a bite. The place was super cute and the staff was a hit with me. Upon arriving we were seated immediately. The drinks were all cost efficient not ranging more than 15 dollars or less. I chose a house strawberry margarita and oh my it was delicious. The table shared a variety of appetizers such as calamari, tamales, oysters etc. Everything was super fresh and was made to order. After all the appetizers my main course which was fried snapper stuffed with crab came out. When i say the food was absolutely delightful. The staff was ever so accommodating to myself and my party. Making sure all was good for us was a super nice gesture. While there I met and mingled with the staff learning of common culture and customs. I would recommend this place to anyone. We waited a while for the waitress to take our order and then we waited for more than an hour for our orders to come out. I had my go-to dish, garlic shrimp with rice & beans, and I felt like the dish was not up to par with their other restaurants that offer this. It lacked the strong garlic flavor that makes the shrimp pop. The maduros (fried sweet plantains) were good. The chuleta de can can (fried pork chops) were huge in portion but very salty. One thing that did catch my interest was their hot sauce. It had a strong jalapeño kick and was a good addition to the food. read more
