I made reservations to Metropol Restaurant in Carolina, PR, b/c I read it gets busy & I wanted to be prepared. I went for a light bite since I wasn't very hungry & it turned out to be a fairly decent experience. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere & I enjoyed looking at the artwork displayed on the walls. It gave the dining room a little extra character while I waited for service. Since I wasn't looking for a full meal, I sampled a couple of dishes. I tried the snapper but it was a bit on the dry side for my taste. It wasn't bad, but it just didn't have the moist texture I was hoping for.My fave dish I sampled was the shredded beef served in a crispy fried plantain cup(tostones rellenos de ropa vieja on the menu). The beef was tender, juicy, & packed w/ flavor. The crispy plantain added the perfect texture & really elevated the dish. The combo of the savory beef w/ the fried plantain worked so well together and made it the standout food I tried. The waitress was just ok (nothing particularly memorable). For appetizers I tried the Tostones Rellenos w/Ropa Vieja, and as someone who's part Cuban, I can be a little picky when it comes to ropa vieja. These did not disappoint! The flavor was so rich and savory. After that first bite, I had a feeling I was going to love their black rice and I was right. I ordered it as a side with my lamb chops, and it was packed with flavor and cooked perfectly. Everything we ordered was delicious and well seasoned. The lamb chops were tender and juicy, the black rice reminded me of how my abuela used to do, and every dish that came to the table was flavorful from start to finish. I'd def recommend. read more

A nice and convenient spot near the Isla Verde Resorts with great island vibes and plenty of dining options! This place had quite an expanded menu, as it had both Puerto Rican and Cuban cuisine (I had the Mofongo de Ropa Vieja). All food items were great and service was spot on! This place was highly recommended by the hotel owner and was walking distance from my hotel. It was early on a Friday evening around 6 PM. I figured walking in should be fine. When I arrived, the restaurant was pretty packed already. The 2-seat tables were all occupied, leaving a few 4-seat ones open which I knew the staff was hesitant to give to a solo diner. But they did seat me right away. I ordered a ceviche and a grouper filet with rice & beans and maduros. The ceviche took over 30 minutes to come and the entree also took another 30 minutes to come. It was busy but that was a bit much. Both items were fine. Nothing blew my socks off. Definitely not what I was expecting since it came highly recommended by a local. Metropol locations are similar to snowflakes, in that no two are alike. This is the location at which to dine. The place is pretty busy as early as 5pm; you should consider long pants and a jacket, perhaps, as it tends to be chilly. They had an overhaul about five years ago so it's pretty modern looking, and there are dozens of employees running around, being very attentive to their patrons. We had the best meal of our stay here last night: my wife had a whole Red Snapper, while I had the Churrasco and a couple of Margaritas. Everything was delicious. A really terrific meal. read more

Visited this restaurant when I was displaced because Delta canceled my return flight. The place from the outside did not look open because it was under construction. When I entered it was fairly busy. I saw a sign for their empanadas and I was excited to see that they had shrimp ones. We'll I recieved them and they were quite disappointing. They definitely are not made fresh. Next I ordered the Mahi Mahi cajun style which I guess means it comes with a red sauce it was pretty good but the rice that came with it is just okay. Lastly and my favorite thing was the chocolate cake it was rich and tasted pretty darn good! Especially with a hot coffee! Service was good and my waitress was attentive. read more

I visited Metropol in the airport around 9:30 AM during a recent trip through San Juan. It was the only place open in our concourse, and after an early morning, I was really looking forward to a good coffee and a proper breakfast. The airport itself was extremely busy and clearly understaffed--Starbucks, for example, wasn't even open until 11 AM due to lack of staff--so I wasn't expecting perfection. Still, getting seated at Metropol was a bit of a challenge. The host stand was unattended, with a "please wait to be seated" sign, and since we were juggling heavy luggage, standing there for about 20 minutes wasn't exactly ideal. Eventually, someone did step in--but interestingly, it was an airport security staff member (not even in Metropol attire) who helped seat us and take our order. Not your typical restaurant experience, but honestly, it spoke to just how stretched the staff must have been. Once we were seated, things improved quickly. I ordered a café con leche and the Puerto Rican-style oatmeal loaded with cream, cinnamon, and sugar. Both came out fast, and the coffee in particular was excellent--easily one of the best cups I'd had in a while. So while the wait and lack of staffing made for a slightly frustrating start, the quality of the food and the chance to sit comfortably made it worthwhile. If you find yourself stuck in that concourse with limited options, Metropol is still a solid place to pass the time--definitely better than camping out in the terminal seating. And honestly, there really isn't much else open so there are very limited options. I prefer the Carolina location for this restaurant and had not tried this version in the airport before. Came here for dinner with the family. We walked in around 6PM and were able to be seated within 5 minutes. Our waitress was friendly and provided good recommendations. The one dish that got us all talking was the Churrasco 8 oz (Skirt Steak), ($25) which we ordered medium rare. Something about how they prepared the steak where it wasn't dripping blood, but still perfectly pink in the middle and also really tender and enjoyable to consume. Other items we ordered worth noting as they were also tasty was the Zarzuela de mariscos (Seafood Zarsuela) ($27) and the Ropa Vieja (Shredded Beef) ($18). Metropol at the airport was delicious-yes, a little pricey but the portions are generous and you definitely won't be hungry on your flight. In fact, with a full belly, you'll probably nap the whole way! Our server Susy from Colombia was wonderful-friendly, attentive, and made the experience even better. The food came out quickly, and we never felt rushed. We stayed about an hour, so if you arrive at the airport around 2.5 hrs before your flight, you'll have plenty of time to enjoy a meal here. I had a very disappointing experience at this airport restaurant. After being seated, we waited almost 20 minutes before anyone even came to take our order. When the food finally arrived, it was another 20 minutes later, and during that time I still never received the water I asked for. By the time the food arrived, it was cold and clearly looked like it had been sitting under a heat lamp for a while, which made the meal even more frustrating after such a long wait. What really bothered me was that after I finished eating, the server suddenly asked if I still wanted the water I had requested earlier. At that point, I told her no, because I had already purchased a bottle of water to take on my flight instead. Despite that, she still added the water to our bill, which felt very dishonest. When my husband went to pay, the server stood over him watching the receipt closely to see what tip she would receive. When she saw it, she made a noticeable face and had an attitude, which was incredibly unprofessional. Between the slow service, cold food, incorrect charge, and poor attitude, this was a very disappointing experience--especially when you're already dealing with the stress of traveling through an airport. I literally went straight from picking up my car rental at San Juan airport to Metropol!!! No stops -- it was straight to this highly recommended spot. For my first ever visit to Puerto Rico, this meant it was also my very first taste of authentic Puerto Rican cuisine!! My sister and I were really excited to try as many things as our stomachs would allow. For starters we ordered the Croquetas de Bacalao (cod fish croquettes), and for our entrées the Chuleta Can-Can, the Mofongo Camarones (shrimp )!! All in all the food was good. My favourite from everything that we had was the Mofongo. As it was my first few hours in San Juan, I was also excited to try a Piña Colada on its home turf! I believe it was with Don Q rum. It was good - but not the best I had on the island. This wasn't a restaurant on my list to try while we were in PR, but we needed something closer to isla verde and this was recommended on google/yelp. Our server was friendly. The worst pina colada on the island. We tried to order a painkiller drink as well, we asked the waiter to see if the bartender could make it. It wasn't good. Soup, rice, combo platter and shrimp mofongo were good. The calamari was not fresh and had to be sent back to the kitchen. I don't send back food usually but it was near rancid. They took the amount off the bill, but we were surprised about it being served to guests. 2nd time to Metropol over the years while in town for business. Overall, I enjoy coming here when I want an upper scale Puerto Rican menu dining experience in Isla Verde. (Ie. When I have a new-to -PR coworker with me and want to try local cuisine) The ambiance reminds me of a dimmer -lit diner in the US. They could probably beef up their interior design but who am I to judge? This time we were sat in their bar area. Our server was great and very nice, although English was limited. (Totally OK, I realize I'm the fish out of water, so, I brushed off my high school Spanish and we made it work great) There was a 2 man band that came through playing the accordion and guitar- they were authentic and great! Loved them! I had the fish tacos, which were very good. I received three tacos with fried grouper nuggets topped with slaw, which was very tasty! ($13) I also ordered the avocado salad, since the tacos do not come with a side, and it was simple but very good. I'd kinda consider it a big side of avocado sliced and covered with chopped onions instead of a salad, though, so decide if that's worth it for you. ($7) Washed it all down with a $4 Medalla Light, and I'd consider it a pretty good meal! If you're in the area and looking for an upper scale Puerto Rican dining experience, I'd suggest Metropol at least once during your visit. Enjoy! read more

A very popular restaurant for the many tourists in the area. They do not accept reservations, so expect there to be a wait. but the wait is worth it. The food was exceptional and the service just as good. We had a party of ten and had to be seated at two separate tables, which was a drawback but they did what they could do for us on a Friday night. I had the steak medallions in an onion and mushroom sauce which was the best I have ever had. The steak was grilled to perfection, just as I had ordered it.
