A New Mexican place in town always will get my attention. We've been there twice now and will probably go for the trifecta. Good chips and salsa are always a good start-and they're solid but not particularly outstanding here. My wife had a chimi with quest-which was a white cheese variation but no spices to be seen or tasted. I had cheese enchiladas one trip and some pork tacos my second trip. Both were pretty good. We had an excellent experience at this restaurant. We had the Texas fajitas for 2 and they were fantastic.The margarita was really good as was the generous size beer. The service was very friendly and fast and the restaurant was clean. At first we were intimidated by the fact the restaurant only had 3 stars on yelp. I'm glad we took a chance! The salsa and chips, a benchmark of Mexican restaurants, are unsatisfactory. The meal portions are giant and pretty standard Tex Mex--not terrible by any means. The guac is actually quite tasty. They only offer margaritas from a pre-mix, so aren't able to mix up variations (such as a less-sweet version, for those who like their margaritas more tart). Would give Don Tequila zero stars if I could. The food is inedible. Everything is bad, so I am not sure where to start. First, they bring out ranch dip to go with the chips?? Then the lettuce on the tacos was wilted. The taco shells were stale. All the cheese they use is over processed, fake tasting, and over all just gross. Don Tequila's is the type of place that one cannot leave feeling good about themselves. When I leave, not only do I feel bad due to digestive issues (this is to be expected), but I actually feel guilty about what I have just done to my body. Before I continue, a similar disclaimer to Rick F's needs to be made: I was born and raised in Texas, and consider Austin my home. You can take a guess as to whether I'm a Tex-Mex snob. That being said, Don Tequila's doesn't even compare to crappy Tex-Mex chains (see, e.g., Abuelo's; see also South of the Border). The fajita steak tastes like it was taken from the Sysco Truck a few months ago and reheated in a microwave right before serving. The margaritas are God-awful, overly-saccharine, and the queso is liquidy and white. The following borders on blasphemous: I truly don't believe that Don Tequila's uses real avocados in their guacamole. It's this green stuff that is bland and weird. Not fooling this Texan, Donny T. Upside: the atmosphere is fun in an ironic way, and it's fun to hear people's responses after you tell them that you had just recently eaten at Donny T's. Here's what really bothers/angers me about Donny T's: the owners know better. Unless they never eat their food, they know they are serving crap. What is the excuse for that? They probably do decent business and have been getting by on doing the bare minimum, so they haven't had an incentive to improve. If they tried to actually be a good restaurant, however, who knows what would happen. Business could increase, VMI and W&L's relations would improve, news anchors would learn how to pronounce the name of that Icelandic volcano, world peace would arrive, and maybe, just maybe, a self-described Mexican Restaurant would use real avocados. read more

Terrible service, greasy and disgusting food. Ordered tacos and asked for some cheese and lettuce. I was upcharged $1.25 for a couple of lettuce shreds. The chips were soaked in grease and burnt, the waiter never checked on us, and never refilled our glasses. I feel sick after eating there, and I will not be returning. Don't go here! read more

First of all, not many of the staff speak English and this can be problematic - especially if you have an issue with your order. My friends and I are students at one of the local universities and we go weekly for their Wed. margarita special. The service is poor and the last (and final!) time I went to this restaurant, the waitress told me that the manager had a problem with me because the last time I was there I "ordered ice cream, ate half of it, and didn't pay for it." THIS IS NOT WHAT HAPPENED. I ordered their "Fried IceCream" (which is TERRIBLE by the way) and after taking one, small bite I decided to send it back to the kitchen (specifically so I would NOT be charged for it.) The waitress was confused, but finally took the plate away. They did not charge me for the ice cream on my ticket! So why, she is telling me I skipped out on a check is far beyond me! I could go on and on about the terrible service, but the bottom-line is: if you are used to decent custom service and a staff that you can understand, skip Donny T's and head to Taco Bell! read more

Big Donny T's fan. Only place you can get "white sauce," a creamy dip that comes with your chips and happens to be fantastic. I highly recommend the chicken nachos; it's very filling and as cheap as it gets. Servers are nice and prompt. Popular place for locals, social environment. read more

Many people from Lex seem to adore "Dons," but I have do not like this place at all. I had gotten sick after eating here multiple times before they moved locations. My family tried once again at the new location, but we all got ill. That was the last time we will ever eat here. I give it two stars, not one, because it is cheap and tou get tortilla chips. Your best bet is to try Muchacho Alegre, the other Mex in Lex. read more

What can I say? It's Donny T's. The restaurant where I spent many a Saturday or Sunday late morning brunch dissecting the night before. The jumbo Texas Margarita is jumbo, the nachos extremely cheesy, and the "crack" sauce they deliver with your chips and salsa is definitely mostly mayo. But they have gigantic portions, a delightfully friendly staff, and they are cheap! It can get busy in here, but it's worth it. read more

Not sure if this even deserves one star simply terrible and dirty. Order was all wrong, rusty water dripping on us from the ceiling and staff and manager didn't care at all. There was also exposed electrical conduit in the entry way and big holes in the tile of the bathroom. I don't know if the City of Lexington just doesn't have a code and/or health inspector on staff, but this place is a big fail. Do yourself a favor and stay away. I ate here last night with my family and we were very happy. The restaurant (including the bathrooms) was very clean, the service was prompt, the prices were very reasonable, and the food was good. My cousin was celebrating her birthday, and they helped make it extra special by singing to her and bringing her some delicious ice cream. We will definitely be back. read more

Horrible!!! Went here to have dinner. The waiter refilled my sons Sprite with water. No refill on chips. The food only was delivered after I complained that it was well over an HOUR after we ordered. Food arrived cold-and the ONLY reason it was consumed was because we were very hungry. Veggies cold, beans cold, rice cold, taquitos cold. Fajitas came out and not one piece of the dish was steaming. I would never ever recommend anyone visit this place. Parties were seated after ours, fed, and left before we got our food. Awful. Has no business being in business. This has got to be the worst place to eat in Lexington. My tacos had ground beef with zero flavor or spices. Guacamole wasn't great, our table also had fajitas and a couple of other bland things with low quality meat and terrible iceberg lettuce. My standards for Mexican food in Lexington are not high, but if this is my only option I will do without. I can't speak to the margaritas, maybe they redeem it as a place for drinks, since there are so few in town. To add insult to injury, I was treated rudely as I was paying at the counter. This is the worst Mexican food I have ever had. Does even rate one star. I admit, I am from California and have had bad Mexican Food there as well. Ordered an all beef combo with a chili relleno. Relleno's are supposed to have Monterey Jack stuffed inside. This one had some kind of sauce. Could have been the same white sauce that was given as a dip. Terrible. The beef filling for the enchiladas was ala Taco Bell. What kind of a combo does not come with rice and beans? Other reviews were favorable regarding the margaritas. We were passing through Lexington and needing a place to get a gluten free meal. Mexican cuisine tends to be adaptable for gluten free options. This place does not officially cater to gluten free service, but we were able to get gluten free meals at our table. The taste did not reach the level of quality I've had in the Southwest US, but it was good and my children liked it. Our server was excellent. read more

I've eaten there 3 times and two of the three times, I had the same waitress. She is so put out by having to wait on a table. She never brings refills, screwed up our order, and insisted that she wrote down what we said. Nevertheless, we ate the screwed up order because we were afraid that she would spit in the corrected order. Twice she has ruined our meal. read more

I had a great time at don tequila. The service was great. The waitress was nice she brought our food and drinks really fast. She was really nice and welcoming. We just traveled for 7 hours. She gave us chips and they tasted great and the salsa was amazing . The food was also great I got meat and cheese tacos and rice and beans it tasted great. Good food with really nice prices - I got the "Guadalajara Especial" - two taquitos (one beef one chicken), one tamale (pork) and a mound of chips covered with ground beef, chicken, beans, lettuce, tomato, guacamole + sour cream. It was enough food for two or three people, and it was only about eight bucks! It's standard Mexican fare - nothing to write home about, but it was hot, it had fresh ingredients, and the servers were attentive and spoke good English. The place was full of college students, but it wasn't rowdy - it doesn't have much going for it ambiance-wise, but it was a darned good meal for two road-weary travelers. terrible!!!!!!!!!! never have i been to a mexican restaurant and ordered fijatas and received a plate of meat. the waiter apologized stating the cook forgot the vegies. my daughter and i wanted an additional 5 minutes for the peppers, onions, tomatoes, etc to arrive all the while our meat continued to sizzle and turn to jerky on the skillet. food was bland and when i asked the waiter for hot sauce he asked if i wanted bottle or house. when i asked him which one had more flavor he responded by saying he will bring me a bottle of store brought hot sauce.*****************go to the other mexican restaurant next to days inn in lexington************************* read more
