Got to have the Mariachi Beef!
    Leka W.

If you want delicious classic Donatos pizza the Allen location does it right! Donatos's Pizza goes back to Columbus, Ohio. There's no other pizza as good or as a delicious mariachi beef and the classic pepperoni. Jay and his team knows how to make delicious food and the service is exceptional! We'll be back!

The Works (pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, green peppers and onions) individual thin crust pizza and something from the beer fridge.

Was craving pizza and remember seeing Donato's and thought this would be a good time to check it out. We were still kinda full from movie popcorn so individual pizzas seemed like a good choice. My wife chose her usual Hawaiian (ham and pineapple which also included almond slivers and cinnamon) and I went with The Works (pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, green peppers and onions). I'm used to larger pizzas so my 7" pizza seemed child sized until I picked up a slice. Toppings are very generous and the little pizza filled me up. Thin crust is the default crust and if you want thicker, hand tossed or cauliflower crust you have to go medium or large. My wife is a thin crust fan and thought that the edges were crispy but not the middle. I figure the amount of toppings might have be the reasons. I'm a fan of toppings so it worked for me. Being on the east side of Allen Donatos is less convenient to me but will definitely put them in our pizza rotation.

It honestly took me right back to old school Pizza Hut, that thicker, slightly greasy, cheesy in a nostalgic way kind of thing. If that's what you're after you'll probably be into it. Not fancy but it does the job. Here's my problem though. There was a metal disc left inside our pizza box, sitting right under the pie. I know kitchens get busy and stuff happens, but a chunk of metal in the box with the food we're about to eat is not something I can just laugh off. That's a safety issue. It made me wonder how carefully they're checking what actually goes out the door. Two stars for now. The pizza has potential and the nostalgia is real, but they need to fix their quality control before I order again.

The house Manhatten was delicious with subtle adjustments to the traditional recipe. The Arancina Tradizionale is a fried ball of tasty saffron rice, stuffed with Bolognese and peas. Its a great appetizer with lots of subtle flavors. As an entree I had the Cacio E Pepe, the famous pasta prepared in a wheel of pecorino cheese and covered in fresh ground black pepper. The pasta was perfectly al dente, the cheese was creamy and mild, and the pepper nicely balanced the richness with a mild spice. I ordered shrimp on the side and it was well seasoned and nicely charred. My wife had the geilled salmon and loved it. We didn't really have room for dessert, but since everything else was so good, we couldn't resist trying the Tiramisu and Strawberry panna cotta. We couldn't have been happier with our choice. Be prepared for European style service and you will leave satisfied.

The menu I think had a good variety of entrees to choose from, and we both ended really liking the dishes we ordered. I ordered the pasta bolognese, and it was great. My only complaint was that seating is a little cramped, and everyone including the restaurant staff had to maneuver around chairs, etc. but other than that we really enjoyed our visit.

We didn't realize until we were ordering that they do a BOGO half off deal on entrees every Tuesday, as long as everyone orders an entree. As a result we definitely had too much food on the table but it was nice for our party of 7 to try a bunch of different things! I didn't have time to take pictures of it all, but we started with the bruschetta and the sautéed mushrooms. Bruschetta came out hot and great as usual, but the mushrooms were a bit salty. The complementary salads were nice and light and our servers were great at refilling waters and bringing out more free bread throughout the night. For our entrees, we ordered the creamy lemon shrimp pasta with spaghetti, the eggplant parm with fettuccine, the lasagna bolognese, the shrimp spezia, the tortellini bolognese (one of the specials that day), and the dolce e salato & cesarini pizzas. My favorite items of the night were the dolce e salato pizza (the sweet and savory combo was excellent and the crust was light and fluffy) and the shrimp dishes - the shrimp was cooked very well. I'm not a big red sauce person but the bologneses were also pretty good. The long noodles were a little mushy in all the sauce but the tortellini was not bad. Portion sizes were huge so we took three boxes of leftovers home! And one of the ladies at the host stand helped us take some nice group pictures outside the restaurant after our meal. For a solid local red sauce joint that will fill you up and then some, look no further!
