Everything was delicious and highly recommend the General Tso's chicken. For those of us who can't take spicy, the dish is listed as spicy but it's just a touch and really adds to the flavor of the dish. Randy was a wonderful server. Duck lovers: Don't order the duck here. My wyf and I came here looking for a great go-to Chinese restaurant in the area. When we try a new restaurant, we have some standard items to try to judge against other items. For a Chinese restaurant, that has to be the egg rolls, fried rice, a common standard dish, then a chef specialty if they have one. The egg rolls were just OK. Somewhat small. Not hearty or flavorful. Our standard is a fat egg roll stuffed with fresh veggies and perhaps a protein. This fell short. The fried rice was OK. Kind of like fluffy rice with some veggies. Tasty but I didn't get any seared flavor one would expect from being tossed around a hot wok. For our common standard dish, we had the beef and broccoli. This was probably the best dish of the evening, a solid 4 out of 5 stars. For our chef specialty, the wife ordered the duck as she loves duck and ordered it many times over the years at various restaurants. The duck skin was great. The meat was delicious but on the greasy side. In my wife's words: "It was Bones, Bones, Bones! I had trouble getting enough usable meat to make it a meal." Being a specialty and one of the more expensive item on the menu, we were very disappointed. On the positive side, the wait staff was friendly and attentive, and the ambiance was very nice. The food at Donhao is just okay. Considering the price, we were hoping for tastier and more interesting dishes. Overall, not worth the price. We ordered the Black Bean Chicken, the Pan Seared Dumplings, and the Fried Rice. The chicken was relatively tasty, but half of the dish was onions and bell pepper. There wasn't enough chicken. One word: WOW *Finally* Danville has an amazing restaurant that hits all components; innovation, service, quality, taste, value, and atmosphere. Donhao has taken over the former Kaori space. We enjoyed Kaori the few times we went, but always forgot to return. The owners of Kaori have opened Donhao, but now partnering with nearby Aozora's owners. We ordered: - Spicy Wontons (5/5): Highly recommended by our server, we will dream of this dish until we return. Spicy and acidic, flavorful, fresh, perfect. A must order for all future visits. - Vegetable chow mein (4.5/5): Incredibly fresh veggies, great flavor; the meal was so amazing that we had to nit pick to find a flaw and wished that the noodles were cooked just a tad bit more. - Chicken kung pao (5/5): WOW. For their chicken Donhao only use Mary's chicken, and the quality of the meat makes a world of difference... it made me have a "so THIS is what it is supposed to taste like!" moment about kung pao. Like the wonton appetizer, it was acidic with a good kick. Must try. - Milk tea panna cotta (5/5): We never order dessert, but the food was so good so far and the panna cotta was raved over by our server, so we decided to calorie splurge... INSANITY. Yum!! Graham cracker crumbs, kiwi and peaches, with a brown sugar milk tea panna cotta. Need I say more? We came on a slow Thursday night, and we could overhear every other table comment MULTIPLE times about how fresh the ingredients are... the veggies are colorful, the beef is wagyu, the the chicken is Mary's- this is not like any other Chinese food in the area. - typically Danville has solid service, but the Donhao crew went above and beyond. Every member of the staff was incredibly friendly but professional, as well as attentive. Our bartender, Randy, made our visit exceptional. He ran us through the menu and offered his opinion, which was all spot on. I was craving a lychee martini and Randy took that idea and ran with it, making me a custom drink- asked me questions about my flavor palette, explained his thought process of what he had in mind, and allowed me to try (and deny) to ensure it was what I wanted. - The most shocking aspect to this restaurant is the value: the price points are the same as the turn and burn Chinese restaurants across the Bay Area. Our family of 5 wanted to try Donhao after seeing an Instagram ad, but we also noticed that they have taken over the same space that Kaori was in. I'm not sure if it is still the same chef/owner. When trying to make a reservation through OpenTable, there was no party of 5 available but we were able to call and they confirmed that they could fit us 5. As for the interior, it is still very similar to what it was before. Clean, lots of wood, and upscale/modern vibes. There is some outside seating with ceiling heaters. Our server (Zoie) was very attentive! Appetizers - not sure we would get any of them again as they were lacking flavor): Spicy Wontons (2.5/5) - not spicy at all. You could taste a tiny bit of sichuan. I am comparing this to Din Tai Fung. The dumplings itself were a decent size and easy to eat. There could definitely be more taste to the wontons as these were a bit bland. Pan Fried Dumplings (2.5/5) - fried pretty well and had a slight crisp. However, the red sauce it came with was disappointing. It was watery and didn't taste like much. Entrees - much better than the appetizers! Walnut Shrimp (4/5) - very crispy and good sized pieces of shrimp. They were fried well and not dry. There could have been a bit more sauce. I do like how this was not as oily as the walnut shrimp from Koi Palace in Dublin. Classic Egg Fried Rice (3.8/5) - rather plain tasting (could have used a tiny bit more salt). However, it was a good accompaniment to the rest of the dishes we had to mop up any leftover sauce. Garlic String Beans (4/5) - good, salty taste. I wish they would have cut the pointed ends of the string beans off though, as they felt a bit tough to chew and swallow. Not Din Tai Fung status but still tasty! Tofu with Wagyu Beef (4.5/5) - pleasantly surprised with this dish. I thought the wagyu beef could have been slightly softer. The tofu was cooked very well and was slightly crispy on the outside while still being soft on the inside. The brown sauce was tasty! I liked how each piece of tofu had a piece of beef on it - easy to share. Mary's Orange Chicken (4/5) - was a bit surprised with the portion size when it came out. I would have liked it to be bigger. The chicken itself was pretty crispy and it did have a noticeable orange taste. The chicken wasn't dry. There were two desserts that were not on the menu but were served due to the grand opening. Both were not that sweet. The milk tea panna cotta is definitely better than the sponge cake. Not a strong milk tea taste but the crumbles on the side complement the softness of the panna cotta well. A good dessert menu may be nice to see in the future. There is potential at Donhao. The appetizers definitely need some work, but the entrees are good. Portion sizes could be larger for the price you pay (a bit pricey). read more

I ordered Wagyu beef with broccoli. It is $29. The beef is no way American wagyu beef. Very dry and tough. The broccoli is over cooked. The sweet glaze sole with pine nut is all flour. The salt and pepper prawn is not the same as I ate in the restaurant. It is not salt and pepper. It is more like regular stir fried prawns. The pineapple sweet and sour pork has a few small pieces of pineapple. They should call it sweet and sour pork. I expect high quality food. Wow, the universe was really listening with this one. For months I have been asking my friends and family "where can I find some really good Chinese food"? And boom Donhao delivered. We were celebrating a birthday so we damn near ordered everything on the menu ( we didn't but it felt like it ). The service was super on point thanks to our host/waiter Christian. He was super cool and patient with us. Ambience is cool, there's a little music playing in the background but nothing outrageous. I really like this place. It is a little pricey in comparison to your average Chinese food spot, but it's worth it. Maybe not ALL the time but every now and then. The waygu beef and broccoli, chow mein ( prob one of the better ones I've had in a very long time), salt and pepper fish , veggie spring rolls, salt and pepper prawns just to name a few items. The fried rice has a nice delicate green onion flavor. The dumplings were good but I thought the skin was a little doughy and thick. Orange chicken was really tasty, crispy on the outside and tender and juicy inside. Prices are high. Very noisy inside. The finishings in the restaurant are quality and lend to the feeling of a high-end meal. The food quality was generally good, although the fried rice was lacking in flavor - looking like a large bowl of white rice. Main points that would make me question returning: - Our server was not good. She was friendly but did not check in on us after ordering and made errors. - Our food came out terribly timed & a dish was missing. We received two meats, then those were cleared and we received eggplant & fried rice. The duck, which was highly recommended, never made it to the table. We were completely done with all other food before the server checked in & we said the food hadn't arrived. They either need someone remaining stationed in the kitchen to ensure appropriate meal timing, or the server needs to play this role. It was a major miss. 3. The server didn't ask about dessert after the missing entree blunder - she just set the check down on the table. I had to tell her "no", we would like dessert & another drink. She was not listening well when I asked about two drinks & brought the wrong drink. Her poor service left us feeling underwhelmed with the experience and directly impacted the restaurant's revenue. Additionally, after all of those errors she did not offer to comp the wrong drink or even throw in dessert. She also stood outside for about 10 min after dropping the dessert. We were ready to go & now we had to ask a few people if they could get our check. The portion sizes are small for $21-29/main. If the service was excellent I could excuse it, but we all felt it was not worth it. I saw other tables have better service experiences, although the table next to us had the wrong beef dish delivered (at least the expediter quickly caught it & brought the correct one as well as told them to keep the incorrect one). We might be willing to give them another try in a few months, but they really need to focus on proper food timing & basic steps of service. One more chance is the max we will give - service training is definitely needed. read more

This place is amazing. Ok, yes it's expensive for "Chinese food". But this isn't just your average Chinese food. Instead of "the #12 - Broccoli Beef" you are getting a dish. What you are getting is "Wagyu Beef with Broccoli". I don't mind paying for a meal of what I am getting warrants the price. This warrants the price. The fried rice is the absolute fluffiest fried rice I have ever had. Even the fried items like "General Tso's Chicken" isn't your average greasy fried chicken dish. This might not just be the best Chinese food in the area, it might be the best Chinese food I have ever had. read more

It was EXTREMELY NOISY inside when not even full of customers. Noise level was up over 85 decibals (level causing permanent hearing loss) continually. It's painful and hard to hear across the table as well. We moved outside. The waitress was WONDERFUL and helpful. Some of the food was very good and other things just so-so. I'd expected it to be better. Will go to the 11th Tiger (Thai) or Nanking Bistro instead when in Danville. If you like very noisy places, this is for you. Best Chinese food in Danville. Really good food! My only gripe is that the fried rice ALWAYS gets served last, often well after the entrees. I don't understand it. Excellent food and generous portions! Started with potstickers which steamed and then pan fried perfectly. We shared the soup. Best soup ever, not too salty like most places. The Chow mein noodle are made in house and were fantastic. The egg fried rice was so good. What made the meal so enjoyable was having a friendly, attentive and knowledgeable waiter. Julien took the time to explain some items on the menu and to see if we needed anything or just to stop and refill our water. He brought out some special dipping sauces which my husband loved. So often you don't remember the waitperson when you eat out but we already said let's bring our friends and go when Julien is working! Full bar and incredibly nice head bartender. Plenty of parking. Attentive waitstaff and healthy Chinese food just like the reviews espouse. No brown rice available. "Spicy" wontons are flavored lightly with peppercorn but hardly spicy at all. We had the breaded salt and pepper fish which tasted healthy. We also had a chef's special medley of eggplant, green beans, onions and red peppers that was fresh, green beans were crispy, and not oily. The Wagyu Mongolian beef won the approval from my husband and son. The chicken fried rice was light and hardly oily. High vaulted ceiling give the feeling of a huge crowd as conversations are amplified and loud. Probably not the best place to bring our hearing impaired grandpa. Vegetarian options available.
