I was going to go to Sajj when we noticed House of basil and asked if either of us have been there before which we haven't so there's no better time than the present to try a new restaurant for us. We ordered the pad Thai with chicken and shrimp, the Tom kha soup in a small since it'll feed two people and the fried banana with ice cream for dessert and the appetizer of roti and sauce. The roti had a delicious flavor but it was too oily. It would've been nice if it was just stabbed a little for the grace to be removed and then served especially since he had an order to go so when I came home was pretty floppy. The pad thai and the Tom kha soup were decent so we will order those again. As for the fried bananas, they were very cute wrapped up in fried wrappers that were not greasy at all and topped with honey and sesame seeds. This was the best dish of the night, unfortunately, the ice cream it came with was very freezer burned so we didn't eat that. My favorite was the chow kueh teow- it came with chicken and shrimp (no extra charge for two kinds of proteins which was great), bean sprouts, eggs, and chives. The sweet-spicy coconut curry broth, generous amounts of noodle and sprouts, and classic fixins of chicken and prawns. Portions were generous and I wound up using two bowls at home. Guess I had to share with the wife, LOL! Chewy noodles, perfectly cooked shrimp, and a nice balance of spiciness and sweet. 5 stars. Makes me miss Singapore! Mee Goreng Mamak: A Malaysian stir-fried egg noodle dish where they throw the kitchen sink at you. Shrimp and chicken, tofu, potatoes, green choy sum, and bean sprouts. I found the sauce slightly too sweet for me but I still liked the heartiness of this dish. 4 stars Basil Eggplant and Chicken: A classic Thai dish and the execution is solid. Eggplant soft but not soggy and moist chicken. The flavors are quite intense so you definitely need to pair with white rice. If you insist on going low-carb without rice, you may need to rinse some of the food with water since the flavors are so strong. 4 stars. Overall 4.5 stars but rounding up to 5. House of Basil is part of a chain of Thai restaurants that include Basil Delight in Pleasanton and Thai Basil in Dublin. It was over 15 years ago when Thai Basil opened its doors in the Ulferts Center so we were delighted when House of Basil opened in San Ramon. They took over the space that was vacated by Yogurtland. The new interior space is small and the decor simple, however no indoor dining yet due to Covid. The large shopping center has a Target, Whole Foods, Home goods along with several small restaurants. Its located across the street from the new San Ramon City Center. The menu is similar to the sister restaurants but the lunch portion is not available yet. This week I called in my order and it was ready in 15 minutes. Chicken Larb Salad / ground chicken with chili flakes, toasted rice, cilantro, onions with romaine lettuce.
