It wasn't always that way as I used to have healthy hair but somewhere along the way it changed and couldn't recover. As a result I became the Queen of Pony tails. I will admit she did have to give me a mini intervention as I had to learn to trust the journey back to healthy hair which included bangs and wearing my hair down but 10 months the later, the proof is in the pudding as they say. It's almost unrecognizably different. My hair is full, shiny, limited shedding, growing and feels good. When she told me that I needed a trim, I told her that I wouldn't be getting one at this appointment because I was still looking for a new salon. And one thing that I've learned over the years is that not everyone can cut or trim hair and after rereading negative reviews about her scissor happiness, I'm even more glad that I passed. By the end of my time in the chair she claimed that my hair hadn't been trimmed in 2-3 years despite getting regular trims every 3 months and in between protective/natural styles over the past 7 years. When I showed a reference picture of my hair blow dried she insisted that they would need to flat iron my hair to get it that straight and went on to say how I "clearly think I'm a hairdresser." Each comment about the dryness of my hair and deadness of my ends wasn't isolated or even paired with her approach to repair but was simply sandwiched with insult. By the end of the appointment, she ran the blow dryer through my hair in large sections, offered nothing to hydrate my hair despite going on about its dry state (no oils, sprays, lotions, creams, etc.), and did not charge me for the appointment. For everything that she said I asked if she had recommendations for how to go about caring for it (because I'm always open to new tips), and she offered nothing beyond just finding a place that can care for it and a flippant remark that she "doesn't know how I wear my hair." (That's typically a question asked at the beginning of appointments or at least through styling to identify problem areas, concerns with maintenance, etc.) Hair is too personal to have it be used as ammo by the same people self-proclaimed to be hair care professionals. I was afraid to even get a trim since I'd lost so much hair to job-related stress + the autoimmune condition, alopecia areata. My alopecia areata is mostly gone. And the hair shedding is subsiding, but there came a situation where my hair was getting tangled so badly (I'd been using a medicated shampoo, which dries hair out) that I developed a bunch of hair mats/ hair nets on their way to turning into dreadlocks. I was desperately in need of a hairstylist I could trust - and I couldn't find too many options in Bayonne to help fix this on short notice. Marilyn answered my call, texted me late at night to book an appointment the next day, and I had such a great experience with her. I don't know how she fixed my hair. She not only fixed it, but also offered tremendous insight I hadn't thought of before. My hair looks and feels lush and it feels not only like deliverance, but also like I've reclaimed myself. Hair is symbolic of one's identity and expression. Marilyn was greatly respectful, very engaging, and even offered me water and coffee (unasked), which many hair salons do not do. What's more, she's very customer-focused, an expert with difficult or complicated hair, and believes in bringing out the best in one's natural hair rather than chemicalizing hair with high-formaldehyde keratin / smoothening treatments. She's also a lovely person and very committed to her work. If you're in Jersey City, Bayonne, or Staten Island and need a hairstylist you can trust, I highly, highly recommend her. Unlike many hair salons that push six inches of hair-trimming (which usually is the case if you have hip-length hair like me), she absolutely respects what you want to do. And she will not urge you to hack off inches, unless you want to do it yourself. She was also very gentle with my scalp and hair - gentle to a fault, I must say. Highly recommend her. She also does hair coloring and glossing - which are far safer and better than many highly processed treatments in other hair salons - and she genuinely treats hair like a symbol that is intimate to who we are in our core. If you need a hairstylist, which everyone does, she's your person. Very nominal rates too. For the services she offered me, I expected north of $400 or $500. But it wasn't even $200.

So, they also offer facials and eyelash treatment done by her daughter. This place is cool, hip, laid back, but get the work done. Depending on what services you get, expect to be here for a few hours too. Since this shop is in Bayonne, there is one street parking. My suggestion is to make your appt as early as possible to secure parking in the front or else you're going to end up driving around looking. I've suggested this salon to many people I know. I actually saw the IG influencer Jeanne there who I know via her IG that she is a frequent customer. Ruk's entire attention was on this influencer. I guess it makes sense that the salon would care more about her than a new customer. However, it still felt a bit crappy. Just be transparent if there is no capacity or please set the correct expectations. I would have totally been OK waiting another couple of weeks if needed. There was another customer who came in for a consultation with Ruk and Ruk took about 1 hour to finally talk to her. Then when that customer was trying to book an appt, you can tell Ruk was trying to have the customer book with another salonist.
