    The Quintessential Ice Cream Stand
    Steve A.

Donnelly's Soft Serve is easily one of the most unique ice cream stands I've ever been to -- and totally worth the detour if you're anywhere near Saranac Lake. We made the short drive up from Ampersand Bay Resort to sweeten up a Sunday night before our big hike to Mt. Marcy, and Donnelly's didn't disappoint. What makes it so unique? Simplicity. This place runs with the "In-N-Out" model -- do a few things and do them well. Your only decision is cup or cone, and what size. The real twist (pun intended) is that they offer one flavor combo per day, served as a twist. That's it. No exceptions. It's kind of got that "Soup Nazi" vibe from Seinfeld -- so be sure to check their Facebook page to see the daily flavor before you go. On our visit, the flavor was Chocolate twisted with Vanilla -- classic and crowd-friendly, which worked well for our small but mighty hiking crew. The night before, though, was Chocolate & Peppermint, which I probably would've vetoed. Honestly, I'd love to see them offer two flavors per night to avoid that scenario -- but hey, the place was busy, even on a cool, overcast evening, so clearly their model works. Another standout feature? The shape. Most soft serve comes with a tall spiral and a little point on top. Donnelly's? Not even close. Their cones are round and a bit flat on top -- totally different. At first I thought, "Why?" but it actually works. It gives the cone a nice texture and may even help slow down melting. Whatever the reason, it adds to the charm. The vibe is classic small-town ice cream stand. Tiny building, nostalgic energy, no frills -- just good ice cream and friendly service. The staff couldn't have been nicer -- welcoming in that warm, small-town way that makes you want to support the place even more. Parking was easy out front, and even though the line was steady, it moved quickly. Bottom line: If you're in the area, Donnelly's is a must-stop. Just don't forget to check that daily flavor before you make the drive!

This place is very popular and recommended by all of the locals. So many cars to one tiny place! The line was long but moved fairly quickly. It wasn't what I had envisioned. I was thinking homemade fresh ice cream, scooped onto a homemade cone. They serve one flavor a day and I was slightly disappointed that the day we came was plain vanilla and chocolate. The cone was prepackaged cones that can be bought from the grocery store. The swirls came out of a machine that reminded me of McDonald's ice cream. Once you walk out with your cone that as you can see in the pic was handed without a paper around the cone. So very much held by the server to you, the ice cream melted almost immediately. I had to eat it really fast. No tables or chairs to sit but lots of green grassy area to do so. I suggest bringing a little picnic blanket or sitting in the car. If there is a next time I hope I get to try something new!

Most of the appeal is the experience: you line up with dozens of others, next to roped milk cans, in a quick moving line towards a tiny shop. You don't choose anything except the size -- baby, regular, or large. The flavor is chosen for you. The ice cream is great, today's flavor peppermint swirled with chocolate. You scramble for some shade to devour your treat before it quickly melts away. Not the creamiest or the best soft-serve we've had, but an awesome experience. Would do again on another day, for another flavor.

This spot should be on everybody's Adirondack itinerary. Not too far from Saranac Lake I have to say it's worth the drive if you're anywhere within about an hour of the ice cream stand. Follow their Facebook page to see the flavor of the day. They are only open seasonally. Beautiful views in the meadow across the road. Convenient to Saranac or Lake Placid or Tupper Lake They only serve one flavor a day and it's a twist... Always something twisted with vanilla. Cash or local check only. Expect a line but it moves fast.

I've only been introduced to this gem of an ice cream shop last summer and when we returned to vacation in Saranac Lake, we naturally had to come try their daily flavors. Our week up there was met with rain day after day, but that did not put a damper on the crowd over at Donellys. They are still cash only, and to my disappointment, 5 out of 6 times we tried there this year was kind of lackluster. we were looking forward to the black raspberry swirl the most but it was lacking in flavor. there was maybe the slightest hint of black raspberry. the one that surprised us the most was the strawberry vanilla swirl as it hit us with a nice berry punch with the sweet, creamy vanilla. nevertheless, what a hit. will visit next summer and hopefully the flavors come back

This place was recommended to us and it was worth the drive! It was a great little break after we hiked some trails - exactly what we wanted. So creamy and yummy. Cute little spot!

I've been coming to Donnelly's since I was 6 years old. That's 28 years!! I went a big gap without visiting but it was exactly the same when I finally returned as an adult. Donnelly's is a staple. They have a single flavor per day, twisted with vanilla. They post the flavors a week out on their Facebook page. They have previous days flavors for sale in their freezer to take home, if you want!

First time at Donnelly's Ice Cream. But hopefully not the last! I was shown this location by a local. They always know the best spots! This yummy ice cream store features one flavor every single day. You don't know what the flavor will be which is part of the excitement. It's always a soft serve and always mixed with vanilla. That's it. You only get to choose the size. They put the leftover for that day in a case and sell it. Today's flavorful was, drumroll please, honey cinnamon swirled with vanilla. The verdict? It was fabulous! Very different like nothing I've ever had but absolutely delicious. What a great concept it's been around forever and everyone flocks here. We were lucky to come on a rainy day when there weren't many people so we didn't have to wait in a line. Cash only.

An Adirondack classic. I've been coming here since I was a little kid, and have such great summer memories getting an ice cream cone. Absolutely love the rotating menu. Every day is something different, Saturdays a surprise! The gift that keeps giving, will always make a point to stop here when I visit family.

"We pick the flavor, you pick the size" as they say. One soft serve flavor per day. This is NOT your McDonald's style soft serve that comes in a bag that you load into a listeria-laden mystery machine. Oh no, this is virtually farm to cone soft serve, and it shows. There's just something creamier and poppier about this. I had pistachio vanilla twist on the last day of the season. It was the best specimen of that flavor I've ever had. I can see why there was a line. Good stuff, even if somewhat in the middle of nowhere. But I think that just adds to the old-school vibe of this place, and lends to their reputation for having survived on quality since the 1970s. Good stuff!

Best ice cream I've ever tasted. Highly recommend it. Small but worth it even if it's a long wait.

Of course they get 5 stars. They've been around for decades and have never let us down. The custard is so creamy. Love it here.

Ask the Community - Donnelly's Ice Cream

Are the machines thoroughly cleaned between flavors? My son is allergic to peanuts, cashews and pistachios, but is fine with other nuts. It's Saturday and the last nut flavor was almond on Monday, which he's fine with. Would it be fairly safe to go?

What ingredients are used to make the soft serve? I'm asking because I have an egg allergy.

Hi Kristina, There are no eggs in any of our ice cream. Enjoy!

The only reason this isn't a five-star review is that we had something unfortunate happen with one of my drinks that did not sit well with any of us, but otherwise it was a fabulous experience. Creative fare, unexpectedly varied and interesting drink options, some whimsy in the decor and menu design. Absolutely would come back. . We came here as a party of four at 8pm on a Saturday night. It was good we made a reservation because all the tables were full when we arrived. Food-wise, Fiddlehead Bistro has a diverse menu with eclectic influence. If the preparations seem ambitious for a little Saranac restaurant, the presentation presentation was equally impressive. I've been coming up to the Adirondacks for decades and while I've only been a self-proclaimed foodie for one of those decades, sophisticated presentation is not the first, second, or tenth thing I expect at restaurants up here. Don't believe me? Ask the dishes (Disney kids and their parents get it). Grilled Spanish octopus w/ fingerling potatoes, wild garlic, piquillo pepper, nduja mayo: A A solid octopus dish with sauces that elevated it to a high rating for me. The mayo plus romesco is a divine combo, great with both the octopus and the slightly crispy potatoes. Grilled asparagus w/ crispy poached egg, truffle dressing: A- The only reason this is an A- and not an A is because for $15 I'd expect more than four asparagus spears. The egg in part made up for it and the dish as a whole was delicious and thoughtfully conceived of, but given that I was splitting this with my partner it didn't really feel like enough. Miso black cod w/ shiitake, spring veggies, yuzu beurre blanc, crispy sushi rice, shaved radish: A+ My favorite dish of the night. Beautifully cooked, perfectly savory black cod prepared in the way it's meant to be prepared. The yuzu beurre blanc was heavenly, somehow both light and decadent. Tour de lamb w/ herb crusted loin, yogurt braised lamb dumpling, braised shank, creamy polenta, broccolini, red wine jus: A This was a fun mix of lamb preparations (a "tour" of lamb, if you will) with a lot of solid accompaniments. There's a restaurant on my block in NYC that makes yogurt braised lamb dumplings so I was excited to see them here. There was only a small amount of each type of lamb preparation so you can try it all without getting stuffed. All very tasty in the red wine jus, a natural pairing. Though I didn't think I was coming here for an exciting cocktail menu, I was surprised to see a lot of creative options in additional to some unique flights. For my first drink, I got the weirdest one on the menu as I like to do, but also because it seemed like a really tricked out dirty martini. It's not on the current online menu but I remember it had sake and umami brine so as expected it was salty and savory. The issue arose with the second drink. I ordered what clearly looked like an Old Fashioned variation. The only three ingredients listed were bourbon, smoked maple syrup, and black walnut bitters. I even asked the server if it was indeed an Old Fashioned variation and he said yes. What came was in no way the correct drink. The flavor profile described and what I received were completely different. It tasted like a whiskey sour and not even a good whiskey sour. My partner and my dad tried it and they agreed that it was bad and a mistake had been made. Now I really hate sending stuff back and feeling like a Karen but my dad has no issue being direct so he told the server what happened and the server looked very uncomfortable and I said I'd just get wine instead which was, as it turns out, a great decision because I had a delicious rose. When the bill came, my undrinkable cocktail was still on there and that didn't seem right. My dad asked the server about it and he said there was nothing he could do about it which is the first time I've ever experienced that at a restaurant
