This is an old style restaurant that has survived. So in this tourist dependent area, it means it is frequented by locals to have survived. Good and friendly service. HUGE menu. We had a late lunch so we skipped the appetizers. The veal Marsala and chicken piccata were superb and large portions. The Red Fox is such a comfortable place. We've been going there for many years and went again for dinner last night. There was absolutely nothing we didn't like...the place is spotless, the view out the big picture windows to the beautifully tended garden is so peaceful, the food was great. But what really stood out was the service - our server (wish I'd gotten her name!) was absolutely delightful...smiling, friendly, attentive but also gave us our space. Came on a super busy labor day weekend. There was a wait to be seated. Once we were seated, we got our orders taken within 15 minutes. Our waitress was super nice and attentive! Everyone was actually! The food took almost an hour to come out though, mostly because of how busy it was. We were staying in Lake Placid, the next town over, and we asked our motel clerk to recommend a good place to take my partner for her birthday dinner. They said this place was worth the drive. They were not lying.. Everybody was very nice. The place was both formal and rustic at the same time. We wanted to start with the sautéed mushrooms, which were on their online menu. They said it was no longer on the menu, but they were nice enough to make up an order for us anyway. They were so good. For dinner, we had the broiled haddock, which was the special of the night. The fish was tender, flaky, and so delicious. We enjoyed it very much. For our side, My partner had the salad, nice and crispy, not wilted at all, and I had a cup of the white bean and spinach soup. The soup was delicious. Rich, but not overly so. I loved it. For dessert, my partner had a slice of the bourbon pecan pie. They brought it out with a candle. She said the crust was flaky, and the filling was very rich. I would've loved to have it also, but I don't drink. I had a slice of the lemon cake, which was so very moist, and very lemony. Celebration spot after a friend completed her 46 high peaks, the Red Fox did not disappoint. The inside is nice, so we felt a little underdressed, but at least we were able to change out of hiking gear. The ambiance is rustic and cabin-y with high end overtones, piano, the most adorable fox lanterns (seriously!!). Food-wise, I got the prime rib and it was soft, tender, flavorful and incredible. I highly recommend the prime rib. It came with a soup and the season pumpkin soup was perfect. The complimentary bread before the meal was also superbly appreciated and delightful. Some friends ordered steak and scallops, but the prime rib seemed to be the winner and where the restaurant shined. I don't usually rate anything with five stars but we had a spectacular dinner here last night. The restaurant is large and beautiful and we were welcomed by the owner whose name is Emina. She is lovely and also makes the desserts. I ordered a special cocktail called A Texas sipper. It was made with Tito's vodka (my favorite), as well as elderflower liqueur, grapefruit juice and club soda. boy was it ever good! We started out with a delicious New England clam chowder soup, which came with the dinner. We asked to split a Caesar salad which was served to us on two dishes and it was fresh and flavorful. My husband ordered a shrimp cocktail containing four enormous shrimp and was so good, I know because I ate one. We decided to have our annual meat serving and so we ordered steaks and boy were they ever good. I had mine with a baked potato which was baked to perfection in the old-fashioned way, served with butter and sour cream. My prime rib was so huge I couldn't fit in dessert. My husband decided to order his dessert to go and it was a lemon type cake and so so good. This is a wonderful old school restaurant that is great for special occasions (it was my husband's birthday). It is somewhat pricey but so worth it. read more

We were looking for a place to spend my sons 16th birthday and so happy we chose Red Fox. I called for reservations earlier in the day and requested a cake with a candle to help celebrate. The outside looks very rustic, so I may have driven past and not given it a look, but I'm glad we read its reviews. We arrived and there was a good size crowd so happy we had the reservation. There were tables available for walk-in, but just a few. Greated with smiles from our host and server and looked at the menu while hearing the specials. Our server did mention there were only one slice of lasagna left (homemade), which there were other items they ran out of, so glad we went early. We ordered and munched on some breat and butter while we waited, but we didn't wait long. Salads or soup and baked potato, fries, or rice pielof come with most entries, so our salads came out. So did my French Onion soup, to say that it was superb is not doing it justice. Our meals came out, cooked perfectly with our potatoes. It was all delicious. They brought a chocolate mousse cake for my son with a candle, and the rest of us ordered some desert as well (lava cake) The prices were great for what I would expect to pay for our meal. Like I said before the staff was great and our server took great care of us. This was our first time vacationing in the area and they made us feel right at home. A friend and I could not decide where to go on our last night in the ADK, and after looking this place up on Yelp, we decided to give it a try. I have been a summer visitor to Saranac Inn for 40 years, and have never been here. I'm really sorry I never found it until now! The ambiance is high-end, but with a touch of whimsy and lots of character. I agree with other reviews that it is a little dated, but in a good way. The interior harkens back to the Saranac heydays of grand Inns and spectacular service. (Or I'm a History teacher who grew up visiting a cottage from the original Saranac Inn, and I'm super nostalgic...but I digress...) Thankfully they allowed our bedraggled butts in after a day of visiting museums and sites all over the area. Their garden in back is truly a sight to behold! Get a seat by the windows if you can! (We didn't, but that's okay.) The staff were very friendly and politely accommodated our requests. My friend and I both ordered the Porterhouse special, and it was perfectly cooked with delicious sauteed mushrooms on top. You truly cannot do better than a perfectly cooked steak!! They are a bit pricy compared to other places in the area, but the food definitely makes it worth it! (And with the new places opening around Saranac Lake, it looks like they will be on par with others soon.) Very nice experience! read more

Let's start with the restaurant itself. Great environment tucked in the mountains, classy and not pretentious. Chris our waiter could not have been more professional and enthusiastic. Our server spent time chatting with us and letting us know what was good on the menu. Now for the food, outstanding, 10/10 recommend if you're looking for a steakhouse with seafood. I ordered the Rib and Reef and my Pop ordered the strip steak. Each entree came with choice of soup or salad. We ordered the split pea, it was to die! I really could have eaten more and it was made without ham which made it even tastier! The bread was wonderfully soft and the crust wasn't too hard. Not seen is the photos was the Cesar salad that we completely devoured. It was not over dressed and the salad was fresh. My prime rib was cooked perfectly to order and more importantly the lobster tail was cooked PERFECT! Broiled Lobster tail is easy to screw up but the tail was as soft as could be. Had a great experience here tonight. I had been here over 10 years ago with my friend and had amazing prime rib so came here with my girlfriend. We were seated and greeted promptly the place was lively and the staff was friendly. Even though there were two tables with at least 10 people each plus miscellaneous other tables of customers the staff was like a well oiled machine. We both ordered the prime rib and opted for salads with blue cheese instead of soup she got a baked potato I got fries on the side. Our prime rib was so good and had a really flavorful au jus. We both ordered medium rare, her steak was just a little bit more medium than medium rare but still very tasty. Mine was spot on and very euphoric. We both got bloody Mary's to start out before our dinners came which came with their premix if accoutrements all stirred in already that they said they made in-house. Very tasty drinks. After our meals we got the lava cake and the lemon cream cake for dessert. Both were very enjoyable but the lava cake really stole the show. My boyfriend and I stopped in for Christmas Eve dinner during a trip to Saranac Lake. It was very packed so I'm glad we made a reservation! The atmosphere was very lovely (even though we were seated at a table in the very back corner of the dining room - my boyfriend joked that it felt like we were at the "kids table"). There was some confusion when getting seated, but I'm not taking any stars off because it was a busy night and I suspect that me using Reserve with Google caused some of it. The menu looked delicious, but unfortunately there was literally nothing that was meat-free on it. As a vegetarian, I'm usually pretty laid back and would opt for a salad or something rather than make a special request. But this time, I was pleasantly surprised. The waitress was more than accommodating and brought me angel hair with marinara even though it wasn't on the menu. When we mentioned we had a three-hour drive ahead of us, they also brought us a coffee. The food in terms of taste? Superb!! My marinara sauce was out of this world, and my boyfriend's chicken parm was perfectly tenderized. I was a little jealous!! We didn't have room for dessert but I bet their menu would have been spot on. All in all, a wonderful experience. The TL:DR- - make a reservation yourself over the phone. Be prepared to wait as things seem to be done with pen and paper rather than with a computerized system. - price point is slightly too high for regular dinner for most people. My fiancé and I came here on a Sunday night and the place was packed! (Highly recommend making a reservation). After looking at the reviews, it seems that the filet mignon is the way to go, so that's exactly what I ordered. I love that the entrees also come with warm bread, a salad and potato option. The filet mignon was seasoned and cooked perfectly (I ordered medium). It was super tender and the sauce it came with made it a yummy combo. My fiancé ordered the opened faced ribeye sandwich, which essentially was a huge piece of ribeye on 2 chewy pieces of bread. He was not impressed and unfortunately the cut of ribeye wasn't the best. There wasn't much on it that was edible. I guess we were expecting for it to be shaved on top of the bread, which would have made it a lot easier to eat.
