Panorama of Donner Lake and the boat ramp with Donner Lake Village to the right.

A family friend has owned a unit here since the place has been built. They invited me up for the afternoon and evening. Their unit has amazing views of the lake. Parking was easy. I grew up by Lake Almanor and I have lived in Incline Village, Cave Rock and Kingsbury Grade at Lake Tahoe. It reminded of rustic mountain cabin living. The boat dock was nice. It's a short drive from Reno where I currently live. It's a nice getaway.

The hotel it's self is in a beautiful and secluded area of The Truckee area ( I am sure it's very busy in the summer). The gentleman from Australia ( his name escapes me) is amazing and you can tell he loves his job. The furnishings are newer and the rooms are clean. The mattress is really old and needs a replacement and the rooms was extremely warm with no way to cool down ( it was 28 degrees last night)! I also think a coat of paint, tub redo and shower head would really go a long way since most of the other items in the room seems upgraded for the most part. Lastly the people in room 121 were a nightmare! They were extremely loud and from the way you can see it looks might be actual residents? All this said, we would stay here again. The location itself is what really has this location going for it!

BEWARE DON'T STAY HERE!!!! We checked into our room and found bloody underwear next to the toilet! These nasty people DON'T CLEAN OR FIX THEIR UNITS! The TV didn't work. Sliding glass door was broken, heater broken in winter time, light fixture fell down when I closed the cabinet door. The temperature knob was broken in the fridge and outlets had no plate covers on them. Good thing we didn't get electrocuted trying to charge up our phones! And couldn't use the washer & dryer because were distrusting with pet hair and old soap caked on. This place need a full remodel and must better housekeeping! We will NEVER be back here again! They know ALL these things are broken but still continue to rent out the place! Looks like a law suit waiting to happen!

I will NEVER stay at this "resort" ever!!!! What a dumpy studio--Claustrophobic, no proper air ventilation/small space heater (no central heating system!), kitchen, bathroom, carpet, and dirty mini-blinds are archaically out-of-date: The unconscionable audacity charging almost $300 per night is absolutely, immorally outrageous!!!! Checking in was a disaster as well: Matt, the front-desk attendant locked the lobby while my party and I stood outside in the freezing snow; ten minutes later, Matt finally appears~(--__--)!!!!

    Updated clean bathroom!

Super clean, comfy and updated unit (#225) with a beautiful snowy mountain (sunset) view. 2-burner stove but was enough to make dinner and dine by the lake view fireplace down the hall. Wine, cheese, snacks avail at the deli down the street, groceries a little further down at Safeway or Raleys... a fairly new pub within walking distance. Quiet and romantic! (a pullout sofa & a divider if you've got 1-2 lil ones). Great location!

Right next to the lake with access to docks. Easy late checkin and our room had view of the lake. Relaxing just what we were looking for as a anniversary getaway

Check out the stove and the wallpaper! June Cleaver might love it but I don't think anyone else would...

We stayed here 3 years ago for the same price and had a PHENOMENAL room. Needless to say we were shocked to walk in tonight to a room that has not been remodeled since the 70's. Adding to the fun is being on the ground floor with drapes that don't close and a ceiling fan that looks like it's going to blast off. I would recommend calling and asking before you book because no one should pay $300 per night for a room that should cost $80 max.

This is what they are calling a partial lake view from room 225. I think calling this any lakeview is dishonest.

We arrived at 3pm, Friday Jan 2, 2014 an hour before our 4pm check in time. Our 3 year old needed to go to the bathroom. Shawn at the front desk told us that they had no bathroom, but that we could use the restrooms at resturants down the road. Our 3 year old didn't make it... When we returned at 3:45 the lady now next to Paul said that we should wait in the lobby and that our room would be ready "soon". I said that I was suprised that they had a lobby, and yet no bathroom. She said sure we do have a bathroom, I can take it to you. I explained to her and Paul why this upset me (greatly), and Paul explained that this was a misunderstanding. Paul was not able to articulate where there had actually been a misunderstanding. They offered an apology and I said, lets check in as I have no other options. So, whilst lugging in our stuff, I immediately noticed that there was no elevator, Really? I then I noticed that there was what to me was not any view of lake from our room, which their website included as a partial lake view. I decided to go back to the front desk and inquire about these things. They explained that there was no elevator, which is suprising when you have a nealy $300 a night, second floor studio room. Hmmm. They also exmplained that "if I could put my face against the wall and see any of the lake" that was a partial lake view. While I agree that they are technically correct, I will say that if you hold out a dime in your hand, as far out as possible, you could easilly cover up a few specks of water between trees and the adjacent property. Keeping score, to me that is twice that we were treated poorly and (IMHO) lied to, and we hadn't even taken our shoes off yet. Wow! The room (#225 I believe) was nice enough. This place is really an old motel that is being sold off as condos. I don't think most of them (as of Jan 2015) are currentlly being rented. Room 225 had been recently redone. Issues we had with the room. First, there was no thermostat, only a heating unit with "hotter" and "colder" settings. It was roasting in our room on a not all that cold (20 degree) night. Then we would turn it off an be pretty cold in a half an hour. The coffee provided in the room was undrinkable. Just disgusting. My wife use the term distinctive. Also, the design of the hotel makes it really loud. I thought people were just being loud, then I paid more attention and sound just reverberiates in the hall. Bring ear plugs. The ice machine sounded like someone was emptying out a 55 gallon trash can full of empty beer cans into an empty dumpster. That was accross from our room. I know that there are not a lot of options, but I wish I had plunked down more money and stayed at a real hotel, condo at a ski resort, etc. This was awful. Also I wish the palgue upon Shawn at the front desk for making my daughter wet her pants for seemingly no reason at all. What a jerk

Our fold out bed and Zenith TV and VCR straight out of an 80's time warp!

This place is a total dump! Got screwed on Expedia paying 220 a night for a room that sleeps four. Was told, a queen bed room and fold out couch. Well we got two fold outs, the couch and a Murphy bed. Not that we would want to spend a ton of time in the room, but we got stuck one evening and enjoyed the television and VCR from the mid eighties. Our son had no idea what a VCR was, so at least it was educational. Other reviews complain about the paper thin walls, well add floors to that review. Enjoyed the stomping back and forth till twelve at night from upstairs. Luckily I found our rooms air conditioner, a crappy out of balanced box fan in the closet that vibrated so bad the noise it made drowned out the noise coming through the wall. Has we spent 80 bucks on the room I wouldn't be upset, but 220 give me a break!!!!

We arrived shortly after check-in time on a Wednesday and were able to get our keys without too much trouble, although the lady that was checking us in didn't seem too suited for customer service - she gave off sarcastic, "I don't want to be here" vibes. Our room itself was cozy, clean, and comfortable. Some of the items could have been better stocked before our stay, such as the tissues - I think we only had a few of them in the box so quickly ran out and had to request housekeeping bring more the next day. Housekeeping isn't done daily so you do have to request it manually if you need anything. There were a couple of water stains on the ceiling but nothing too major. All toiletries like shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, lotion, and hand soap are provided and the quality is actually pretty decent. I was very impressed with the complimentary breakfast included in your stay. You have hot items like eggs, potatoes, and sausage as well as cereal, muffins, bread, oatmeal, and a waffle maker. The hot items rotate, too, so you don't have the exact same breakfast each day of your stay. Staff was friendly, and the common area was very comfortable with a fair amount of seating. I believe coffee is also available all day. There was a power outage during our stay that lasted around 6-7 hours but luckily it happened in the middle of the night so most people probably didn't even realize it and it didn't impact our stay at all. I just happened to notice when I woke up in the middle of the night and noticed lights not turning on and some electronics not working.

We found that the Truckee hotel was just that - the perfect place to relax, walk the town and just chill out. The booking process was easy, and we received text updates from the hotel on the day of check in. We received the code to the door to get in, and our key cards were waiting for us as promised. Our room was on the third floor - lots of stairs! The hotel did text and ask if we were ok with stairs - since it is a registered historic venue, it is was it is:) We found our room (American, queen bed with private bath) to be spotless and lovely. Old-timey clawfoot tub with shower in bathroom, and the sink was outside the bathroom - the sink had separate hot and cold faucets . We had our own Keurig coffee maker, pods, tea bags, and breakfast biscuits. Windows were open, with several fans they had brought in: the temps reached mid-80's while there, and the building was quite hot. On the second floor alcove there is a breakfast area with packaged breads and biscuits, coffee maker with Peets regular and decaf pods, many different kinds of Stash teas, cold and hot water dispenser. Small microwave as well. No fridge. In this area there is a door that opens to the outside balcony, where we sat and looked out over the town, sipping coffee and relaxing. A nice respite from the heat. The hotel sits above Moody's restaurant, which can get quite loud in the evenings. The sound was not an issue inside the hotel though. Nor did we hear anything from any adjoining room to ours. Things to know: First of all, this is an old hotel, beautifully maintained. Observations about it are my own, not blaming the hotel. Just want folks to know the ins and outs of this old beauty! First of all, the floors in our room sloped in areas, so it can feel like you are off balance or having a stroke! Kind of an adventure! Second, we were on the third floor, and the stairs going to the third floor are deceptively steep, and stairway is not well lit. Seems like it could be a bit dangerous. I did give this feedback to the management; they are faced with the hotel being a historical building and alterations can come at a steep price and impact. That said, maybe a lamp nearby, or stick-on lights? Just be aware when using the stairs. These are just my observations, not at all a reason to avoid staying here. All in all, it was a lovely stay, despite the heat. Will visit again when it is cooler out!

Should read 4.5 stars but I'm rounding up!…read more We had the most amazing ski vacation at the Ritz Carlton. We spent 4 nights here and did not leave the property except to ski 3 whole days. Here's my notes: ***Seriously ski-in ski-out: The hotel is located on a ski run, so we literally traded our shoes for our boots at the mountain concierge and then grabbed our skis/poles from the concierge outside and started skiing down the mountain to our desired lift. No need to hop on a slow gondola or walk a distance to get to the snow. ***Some fun hotel perks: The hotel does a smores thing at 4:30 pm every day and we thought it was a very nice event. They gave everyone a plate with a graham cracker and piece of chocolate, then your choice of marshmallow (they had strawberry and regular). They also gave us a cup of hot chocolate with a little liquor if you were so inclined. They also had Kids events and we had our little guy paint a pinecone. He had a great time with the very nice guy running it and who knew painting a pinecone could be so fun? ***The restaurants: While we had high hopes for going out to Truckee to check out some cool restaurants, we were so tired from skiing at the end of each day, we never made it out. We loved the food at the Lobby Bar (I think it's called the Living Room) and their new taco restaurant which is called Montesa. Both are expensive (for example, get ready to pay $11-13 for a taco) but we really liked the food at both places. We also ate at Manzanita which is the high end restaurant and the service was amazing plus our little guy LOVED their kids buffet. We on the other hand thought the food was just okay and I don't think we would do this again. So why 4.5 stars and not 5 stars? ***Communication could be improved. We asked directions to the Smores event and a staff member told us it was at the Backyard restaurant and it's not there. In addition, because we pushed out our trip by a day due to the weather, we lost the room upgrade we had secured. It was not the Ritz Carton's fault that we lost this, but there were a couple places where we told the Ritz what was happening with us and they could have told us that they could not guarantee our upgrade. ***Service times at the Lobby Bar restaurant were extremely slow. There was one night where we waited for our food for at least an hour and a half. We will be back!

I called and asked for a reservation modification given the circumstances, and I was completely open to alternative solutions: a date modification, Marriott Bonvoy points to rebook on our own, a refund, or anything reasonable. We just wanted some flexibility. What followed was the usual runaround. We called the Ritz-Carlton directly, they told us they couldn't help because we booked through American Express. So we called Amex, whose concierge team was empathetic and professional. They reached out to the Ritz-Carlton on our behalf. After waiting 24 hours and following up, we were told that Ritz-Carlton management responded via email and declined to allow modifications to the reservation and still expect us at the property unless we pay a $750 cancellation fee. We presented a positive diagnosis of a contagious virus, were willing to accept any reasonable accommodation; a date change, points, anything, and the answer was no. This raises a serious concern beyond our personal frustration. If the Ritz-Carlton would rather a family show up carrying a contagious virus than accommodate a date change, what does that say about their commitment to the health and safety of their guests and staff? How many other sick guests have they pressured to check in rather than lose a night's revenue? What about employees who may face the same inflexibility when they're ill? For a brand that markets itself as the gold standard of hospitality, this experience seems like the opposite.
