This one is actually taught me a severe lesson on not judging a book by its cover. I am definitely a hotel snob and I freely admit it! My husband booked this place with the plan that he was going to go to the concert and stay over with his friend Tomas. He is a flake so I was worried he would do it to poor Joey so I was fully prepared to take his place (if he flaked) and I knew he would so my outfit was ready to be packed! When it was confirmed he was once again flaking out I looked it up online.I figured how bad it could it be if it's part of Holiday Inn...But it's not when you check out the spelling. It's a family owned place and the owner was delightful. I brought my bed bug detector to this place... All clear. This is a pet friendly hotel so that was nice we were able to bring our beloved dog Sawyer and they only charge $10 per night, good deal. The room itself was around $200 per night which is right in line for this area. I mean it's the Tahoe Basin. It was actually to separate rooms with a full bed size in each. I want to mention that the room was very, very clean, this is probably my number 1 priority for any property I stay at. The bathroom was recently renovated so it was nice. I cracked up at the "amenities" they had; the most terrible snob in me...pics below :) The blankets were pretty thin so we had to keep the heat up since it was a cold tahoe night. The hotel/motel situation in this area has really evaporated with the closure of the Biltmore, The infamous Cal Neva and the Crystal Bay has a limited amount of rooms, a lot of places are boarded up it's pretty sad to see. The only negative ( but not hotel's fault) was a small dog was locked in a massive red truck and barking its head off. We arrived @ 4 pm and it was going on and on until 12 midnight when we arrived back from the concert. SHAME on those people for that abusive treatment of that poor puppy. read more

We came to Kings Beach with accommodations booked elsewhere, but got cancelled with only an hour before check-in. Thankfully I remembered considering the Stevenson's Holliday Inn since they were the only other pet friendly establishment I had found. Walked down the street and talked to the manager about availability, sure enough they had a room and were able to offer it to us. He was very helpful and offered a lot of insight to the area and just genuinely cared. After an exhausting day due to the other place, we were very relieved to get into a room. (KB is super crowded summer weekends, so walking it best.) But the best thing about this place is Neil - the manager. Very helpful and kind. I don't mind staying in an old motel, as long as it's clean and well maintained. This one wasn't one of them. It's in a good location and the staff is nice, but it was nasty in places. I posted pictures of a stain on the bath mat, a layer of gunk on the TV controller box, a dirty coffee pot, a worn out torn blanket, and a stain on the chair. There was also a thick layer of dust behind the TV but I didn't take a picture of it. I drove home late one night during my stay but couldn't find the entrance because the sign was turned off. The sign was advertising for a pool and spa that weren't open. It looks like they hadn't changed the lettering in a while. It's like the owners are super cheap, or just don't care. read more

Im a sucker for a hole in the wall motel. The place is old and could use some Renovations but overall it's a place to rest your head for the night. I saw online people complaining that there is no air conditioning. It's north shore people! Not very motels have ac and it's not needed. They have to be buying/asking people to post fake positive reviews because this place is an utter and total cr ap hole full of roaches including on and in the bed. Too greedy/uncaring to actually deep clean, upgrade, and remodel. That it has not been shut down by the Placer County Health Dept says a lot, esp about the County Health Dept. You can't trust them either. If this place is still open, you can't trust the seal of the Placer County Health Dept either. Beware. read more

This place is great for families! I would recommend that they get new mattresses (our room had two full size mattress that were both diff and pretty stained/old. We stayed in room 30 and even tho the place is a little old it was a great stay. Just a few mins walk to kings beach. There's a delicious burger/bbq place right next door to the inn. Best kept little affordable secret in the heart of Kings Beach! I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to post a GREAT review since we have been coming here with our family for over 10 years.. but I felt like post Covid and in a world where everything continues to get more expensive and snooty, Stevenson's remains an unchanged classic! The owner Neil is beyond kind and accommodating, always remembers our family and is always there to help you with anything that might come up. This business is only fit for roaches. It's disgusting and dirty even for a budget option. Filthy carpets that I didn't feel comfortable with my bare feet on, spiders and spiderwebs in the rooms, items in the rooms totally falling apart, and to add insult to injury, I woke up to my car door wide open! Someone had somehow gotten into my car! I don't think anything was stolen but still, I thought this was King's Beach not Oakland. I immediately booked a Vrbo for the same price and took the loss on money and ran. This place is an absolute dump. read more

Stevenson's is great for the price. The location is a block from the Lake, an easy walk to the public beach, restaurants and shops. The owner Neil and his family are very nice and accommodating. Our check in (both times) was so pleasant and easy. He was out every morning tidying and checking in with guests to see how their stay was going. They have nice extra amenities like pool/hot tub and gameroom with a few exercise machines. Pets are allowed and kids stay free! Our room was clean, the bed was firm but comfortable. They included all the nice little hotel things like fridge, microwave, coffee, shampoo, kleenex, ironing board, even a couple of spray deodorants. It was obviously updated recently; the toilet, bath/dressing room counters and carpet looked brand new. Hopefully the wallpaper and baseboards get done next. Furniture was a bit ratty but sturdy. Our friends who stayed up the street and payed quite a bit more didn't have enough coffee for their group or kleenex. So there you go. Overall, we were very pleased with our stay and ended up booking a second night. We recommend it to any one who's looking for a great value in a very high priced area and is not deterred by an older property in the midst of a spiffing up. read more

I'm home from my trip for about a week, and I smile when I think of this place. The beds were comfortable, the room was clean, and the shower had great water pressure that got hot quickly. It's about a two minute walk to Kings Beach, which is absolutely lovely. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Throughout the trip we kept saying I can't believe we found such an inexpensive place at such a great location. That being said, If you're planning a fancy trip, or you plan on spending a good deal of time in the room, this isn't the place for you. When you pull into the parking lot, it feels like you're entering a time warp. I don't think the hotel has been updated since it was built. It has a very retro feel. I'm pretty sure the bedspread and all of the furniture is original to the hotel. So definitely look at some of the pictures posted before you book. read more

We've stayed twice this year and yes, it's much cheaper than a lot of the nicer places to stay in the area. But there are so many positives. 1. The staff!! The owners and everyone we've talked to have been over accommodating and understanding. Also the sweetest people. They make sure we get in early if we need to and are there at a moments notice. 2. It's never crowded or overbearing. Everyone who stays here is respectable- even the pets!! (Did I mention dog friendly) 3. Location. Just a few minutes from the beach, the bus, and multiple stores. 4. Price. Very reasonable. 5. Clean. Yes, it's not Hyatt standard - it's an old hotel. They don't charge a lot, expect the same. But if you need something, they are quick to respond. Never had bedding issues, and the team will bring linen at a moments notice. Daily housekeeping, and the towels are always clean. Also, I'm terrified of bugs - not a spider, wasp, any bug in sight. A++ for me. Love this place. Book in advance! read more

This place is great as long as you know what you are getting into up front. I stayed there recently after not having stayed there for over 10 years. It is exactly the same. Not much has been changed/updated. Pros: Great location, blocks from the beach, walking distance to food etc in King's Beach. Best price in the area (especially non-weekend). If you are into old school nostalgia like cool old signs etc, it has that. Owner/manager is right on the premises and seems nice. A few weeks ago I had to cancel last minute and he didn't charge me. Cons: It is old and has not been updated. It was clean enough. It didn't feel particularly "dirty" but the carpet and everything else is pretty old so it has that dingy feel. The Hyatt it is not. (Example: The shower felt clean but the water is left on constant drip so the pipes don't freeze and it ate away at the grout etc) Put it this way: I would not stay here on a family trip with my wife and daughter. This is a place that I stay on a solo trip or a "ski trip" with buddies. Wifi was sort of spotty if you are relying on that for work etc. Yeah, it would be awesome if it was updated a little bit but my guess is the cost to really do that right is astronomical at this point and all of a sudden this becomes a "boutique" hotel and costs at least $200 a night. So pick your poison. This is a great place to crash for a night or two but it is not a vacation destination. read more

"Old School" Tahoe at its best! Shabby Chic, great location near Kings Beach and no problems. For our family of 4, it couldn't have been better. A Kitchen, dinning table, couch, 2 chairs, fireplace, and a bed but that's just downstairs! Yes! 2 more beds upstairs. Basically, it was a one bedroom apartment. Front door, back door, a garden. We last minute was able to book 2 nights here and wasn't totally sure how it would be but was so thankful to have a place to stay. Upon arrival we were greeted by Neil. We briefly spoke and had mentioned it was our 5 yr anniversary. The next day there was a bag filled with wine, crackers, bars and waters and a note that read "happy anniversary" we were so surprised by the nice gesture and thoughtfulness! Our room was cozy and had everything we needed. Neil even called shortly after getting all settled into our room to make sure we had everything we needed and to check in on us. Our hotel neighbors were all also very friendly. The house keeper was sooo friendly and nice to visit with. We enjoyed some good ping pong rallies at the pool house. If you're coming to North Lake and don't plan on spending all your time at the hotel (and why would you in Tahoe!), you can't get any better than Stevenson's. The rooms are comfortable and clean and the location is perfect for all the activities you come to Tahoe for. Check-in is easy and the owner is a welcoming host who truly cares about his guests. On a recent trip, I arrived much later than expected and outside of the usual check-in window, expecting to miss my reservation altogether. He waited for me to arrive and even turned the heat on in my room so it would be nice and toasty! There's nothing missing here - Stevenson's has free parking, wifi, hot water and a toasty heater, daily turndown service, the usual in-room appliances, and even a hot tub! Pool is empty, rooms are good size but the places are pretty dark, If you open curtains there is no see through curtains to cover what's inside so there's no way to get natural light in unless you just want to open and show the entire inside of the room. Fridge & microwave are also in the rooms. Great staff but also concerned on how well the places are cleaned since it's so dark inside. I dropped my hair clip on the floor next to bed and it was pretty nasty when I picked it back up... so avoided leaving anything on the floor or walking barefoot read more

The previous nasty review do not match my experience at this hotel. Check in was a snap - "here's the key, we can do the paper work in the morning". The bed was clean along with the frig. TV worked just fine and offered the standard cable channels. Rooms are modest and harken back to the 1970's. No air conditioning but you're right on Lake Tahoe. For a last minute booking, I was very pleased with the room (#35). Note - we did see a bear last night in the parking lot - so DO NOT leave food in your car! read more

This was a fine place to stay over the weekend. The manager at the front desk was so kind! I was concerned I was going to check in later than 10pm, when I called he was so understanding & said if the doors were locked just to call and he would check me in at anytime. After asking about Uber's in the area, he already had an Uber Drive he referred often to hotel guests. He arranged an Uber for me the next day without me having to do anything! The Uber driver arrived early and waited in the office until i was ready. Talk about awesome hotel guest service! That was such a relief! Yes this place is a little older but everything worked just fine, everything was clean, quiet. Easy check in & out. Had no issues with the hotel whatsoever. If you only stay at the Hilton and prefer 5 star resorts only I can see why you would complain about this older hotel but relax. You're in the woods on Vacay. Just enjoy the view and be thankful you have a safe place to stay. :) read more

RUN!! We booked on hotels.com for 2 nights for $53. Yes, I know at that price it's going to be a bit janky..but this!! Was DISGUSTING!! We walked in and run out!! Got a refund and hopped next door to Ta-Tel Lodge which was about 15 bucks more a night but 1000 times better! The pool area is disgusting, I doubt they keep up on chemicals for the pool.. And when they were changing the sheets the bed was full of stains When I went in and asked for a refund the owner/manager was extremely rude!! Sorry dude! But I'm not going to stay/sleep in a filth fest! No sir! Like I said, stay away! read more

The place is awesome. Great location. I was by myself but there would've been room for two people. More than two, even with kids would've been too much. Basic room had microwave, coffee maker, fridge. Wi-Fi was good and solid. I even had to do a zoom meeting one morning and it worked flawlessly. Manager guy was great, good communication. Pool was not open but considering it was the beginning of January and there was snow on the ground, totally understandable. Definitely look forward to visiting again come summertime. Room had a wall heater that worked really well. Tiny little driveway when you're coming in, it is directly next to the char pit. The parking lot goes completely through and you can turn left or right on a surface street upon exiting. read more

When I called expedia they called the hotel to get a cancellation fee, I was refunded my entire price. Terrible place to stay at. Only spend at least $10 to stay here and never pay more than $40. This way you truly get your money's worth. Switch off the lights and it turns everything off, tv and wall outlets included. I had to skip taking a shower out of fear that I might get a disease from their shower head or just by stepping in the shower stall. I'm now praying to God that I didn't catch anything for doing a number 2 in the toilet; or from using their toilet paper that seemed like they stole it from a gas station somewhere. The toilet flushes so I guess that's a good thing. Oh, don't expect the heater to do its job as well. Prepare to freeze your balls off as you try to sleep and realize that you're in the worst motel in the history of North lake Tahoe and the only thing that's keeping you from leaving is the fact that you're too eager to snowboard or ski the next day. This was a last minute booking through Priceline and when I saw $50 price tag for a "Holiday Inn" I quickly booked it thinking they were part of the chain. Sadly it wasn't, I guess I should have noticed the extra "L" in Holliday lol. All the furniture and fixtures look like they hadn't been replaced since the 60's, my room had a moldy/smokey odor, the door had a loose latch, no door guard which left me worried that someone was going to bust into my room at any moment, there were large black ants that came out of the shower drain, WIFI sucks balls. One extra star for the free super hydrating men's face/body lotion, I so needed it after a long swim in the lake. read more
