My experience is seriously outdated and may not reflect the current quality. Back in the winter of 1978, I was dead on my feet and in desperate need of a bed. I found the Truckee Hotel / Saloon & got a room. They told me about the shared bath down the hall. I thought, sarcastically, how quaint. I got to my room. Somewhere upstairs on the Eastern side. It was dark out and still snowing. My body found the bed and was attacked by a feather mattress! That new experience didn't last long as I was asleep the second my head hit the pillow. I was out cold until morning. The beautiful sunrise in the window filled the room. As I looked around, I was completely disoriented, having no clue where I was, or why I was there. Seeing the antique water bowl & pitcher along with the other decor, I felt as if I had traveled back in time. Then I went to the window. A thick blanket of snow covered everything. I was able to make out the outlines of a sawmill across the street. There was no activity outside. Several minutes had passed and I was still very confused. I opened the door and just a few steps down the hall I found the bath. Peeking in, I saw the clawfoot bathtub, sink, with pipes exposed on the walls. Only then did I remember the woman telling me about the bath down the hall. Finally after figuring out where I was, I was able to appreciate my surroundings. The room wasn't merely adequate, it was more on the spectacular side. Such attention to detail, as if it was still in the 1800s. That was the first and only time in my life when I made up a hotel bed after sleeping in it! I actually felt guilty that I had disturbed anuthing. I collected my few belongings and staggered down the stairs. Before I had the chance to ask, the same woman who had rented me the room asked how I wanted my coffee! My wife isn't even that fast! Back on life support, she asked if I was satisfied with my room and if I slept OK. I was completely honest & said that I didn't even look at it before I fell asleep. Then I was out cold until a few minutes ago. Once I figured out where I was, it was only then that I truly appreciated it. Even the shared bath was immaculate. All of that, especially the service was extremely uncommon in the 1970s. I really had gone back in time 100 years! After drinking about a gallon of coffee, I was able to venture outside. I found my new Ford 4x4 pickup covered in a couple feet of snow! I actually had to dig it out. By the time I was done, the Interstate was open and I headed back to Nevada, promising myself that I'd return someday when I had more time to appreciate it. While I've passed through Truckee many times since, I still never had the opportunity to stop. Someday I still plan to keep my promise. I've stayed at the full spectrum of hotels & motels but this has always been my favorite. Perhaps I was born in the wrong century. I hope that when I finally return, that it's still as great as I remember. This was the kind of place that I'd invite my parents to stay. They were extremely well off and only stayed in the finest accommodations. I know, without any doubt that while different than most places, that they would be very comfortable there. I hope it's still the same. One more thing... After sleeping on a feather mattress, I drained my waterbed and bought my own feather bed! I highly recommend this place! read more

The Good: The location in downtown Truckee can't be beat. The historic nature of the building is charming. There's a great indoor communal space and outdoor deck on the second floor. The Bad: The room was "tired" and depressing with grime in the bathroom and carpet. The price was way too high for the poor condition of the room. The Ugly: I was literally burned when the shower suddenly went from warm to scalding hot for a few seconds. When I reported this to the staff, I was told this had never happened before. One window had a screen and one didn't. The room was 96 degrees all night long. Hard to sleep. Maybe one day they will invest in an AC or maybe it was the timing. For my first visit to Truckee and the Sierras, we wanted to stay "in the middle of it all" in downtown Truckee. We found that the Truckee hotel was just that - the perfect place to relax, walk the town and just chill out. The booking process was easy, and we received text updates from the hotel on the day of check in. We received the code to the door to get in, and our key cards were waiting for us as promised. Our room was on the third floor - lots of stairs! The hotel did text and ask if we were ok with stairs - since it is a registered historic venue, it is was it is:) We found our room (American, queen bed with private bath) to be spotless and lovely. Old-timey clawfoot tub with shower in bathroom, and the sink was outside the bathroom - the sink had separate hot and cold faucets . We had our own Keurig coffee maker, pods, tea bags, and breakfast biscuits. Windows were open, with several fans they had brought in: the temps reached mid-80's while there, and the building was quite hot. On the second floor alcove there is a breakfast area with packaged breads and biscuits, coffee maker with Peets regular and decaf pods, many different kinds of Stash teas, cold and hot water dispenser. Small microwave as well. No fridge. In this area there is a door that opens to the outside balcony, where we sat and looked out over the town, sipping coffee and relaxing. A nice respite from the heat. The hotel sits above Moody's restaurant, which can get quite loud in the evenings. The sound was not an issue inside the hotel though. Nor did we hear anything from any adjoining room to ours. Things to know: First of all, this is an old hotel, beautifully maintained. Observations about it are my own, not blaming the hotel. Just want folks to know the ins and outs of this old beauty! First of all, the floors in our room sloped in areas, so it can feel like you are off balance or having a stroke! Kind of an adventure! Second, we were on the third floor, and the stairs going to the third floor are deceptively steep, and stairway is not well lit. Seems like it could be a bit dangerous. I did give this feedback to the management; they are faced with the hotel being a historical building and alterations can come at a steep price and impact. That said, maybe a lamp nearby, or stick-on lights? Just be aware when using the stairs. These are just my observations, not at all a reason to avoid staying here. I am so thrilled we were able to get a room here! I wanted "unique" and we found it, here, in the center of town. The environment is totally authentic Westward Movement with a hint of 1900s European Emigree chic. The bed was comfy. The tub/shower was fantastic- great water pressure! The security was sound. Everything was very clean. The price was not crazy. This was just perfect. Take the opportunity to get a bottle of wine from Uncorked Truckee (a block away), and sit on the 2nd floor balcony. Wow! Absolutely perfect! This hotel is perfect for a quick getaway. We stayed in room 319, I was a little nervous about "shared" bathroom but we had our own with the room number on the door and it locked. Simply put it's just not in your room no big. I was there on a Friday and Saturday and did NOT hear the noise everyone was talking about or expecting? This location is walking distance to all the restaurants and action. We walked to their famous Cottonwood Restaurant and back. In my opinion you don't need a car when you stay, there are free busses that take you to Donner Lake and all over. The rooms and bathrooms were spotless, the free coffee and snack area were awesome. There is no TV in the room but there is one in the "TV" room as well as a cool balcony to drink your coffee The front desk has an easy text communication and there is a code to get in the hotel. We had the most amazing time at the truckee hotel!!! First off, I really appreciate check in, they give you a door code and your key is waiting on the counter! Everything is decorated western style and it seems like a lot of the wall print and stairs are authentic! Our room was cozy perfect for two, lovely bathroom and shower! Overwhelmingly a positive experience. I reserved an American Queen when I saw "claw foot tub" as part of the private bath. Jillian called me to orient me by phone but I was already parking and about to walk in. She oriented me on the entry system and set me up with my room (216). The hotel is at about 25% occupancy -- only letting the American rooms with private bathrooms due to pandemic regulations. The bed was so clean and super comfortable. There was a small table and a shelf set up with a Keurig coffee maker, some snacks, bottles of water and towels. Jillian brought me a glass of wine and encouraged me to go out onto the balcony. She also brought me ice, robe and a blow dryer which sealed my decision for evening plans. I enjoyed the last rays of the sun before sunset and the excellent reggae/afrobeat play list from the restaurant downstairs. I decided to spend most of my evening soaking in the tub with bath bombs I brought. Other than an unusual amount of group singing and partying at the restaurant's outdoor dining area downstairs (eeep!) which ended around 11pm -- it was pretty quiet and only heard trains twice. The only changes I would make to my lovely room in the future: 1. Add a small commode or table in the bathroom to set my things out -- there's not a lot of surfaces for guests to use in the room. 2. A dimmer switch or a lamp on a dimmer in the bathroom for a less brightly illuminated bathtub soak. 3. Some way to block the light around the door -- I was looking at light from the hallway around all 4 sides of the door throughout the night. Things I would recommend: 1. Cozy, Clean, and Quite: I'm a musician, and this past weekend, my group was in Truckee. I wanted a reasonably priced room close to where the gig was. I was very pleased to find The Truckee Hotel! Once I arrived, my room exceeded my expectations. It had a super comfortable bed, a Little coffee bar with snacks, and a great claw-foot tub, which I enjoyed very much. There is also a chill guest lounge on the second floor with snacks and coffee as well. On the street level, there is a great restaurant and bar (Moody's Bistro Bar & Beats), which was like stepping back in time. My room was at the far end of a hall (216). As always this is our go to place to stay in Truckee. The rooms are vintage but elegantly decorated and comfortable. The staff are amazing. We stay here every year to celebrate birthdays. The train does come thru early morning but you have to expect that because it's part of the charm. read more

This place is trashy. For $180 a night I could find a better tent to sleep in. Not as pictured on their site. Shared bathroom?! With strangers stuff everywhere. The room smelled, the food was over priced. $33 for pasta with no protein. We don't have a bathroom, TV, fridge, coffee machine, no closet, dresser or desk to put out stuff on. What a POSITIVE experience! We booked a room to get away for the weekend with the family. We enjoyed a hike in the Truckee Tunnels and booked a room at The Truckee Hotel to cap off the day. Julianne checked us in, gave more love with space then we expected. So gracious of her to do that without being asked! The kids were more than thankful! We enjoyed the evening on the deck watching all of the people coming and going, so awesome! We later ordered some small bites from downstairs and ate on the deck while enjoying some wine! We left early the morning to get to a beach in Tahoe. A few hours later Julianne called us to make sure we were in good hands! THAT was awesome and again a sign of great service! We all truly appreciated the family like reception and we will surely come back because of it! Being unfamiliar to the whole area, staying at the truckee hotel made us feel so welcomed. The man who helped us at the front was super friendly and sweet which made a great first impression. Pros: Continental breakfast, lounge area on the second floor, nice little patio area to chill at, comfortable beds, friendly service Cons: Bathrooms we're located outside of the hotel rooms, not a lot of parking There are live bands that do play at night time, and also trains that occasionally pass by, but that didn't bother us much. We did not actually stay here, but made a reservation online. In advance of our stay I had questions about late check in and parking given the snowy conditions. I called 5 times over 3 days and was only ever able to reach the contracted answering service. The answering service agents had no information and no ability to help. Finally I was responded to rudely by text asking me to consider staying at a corporate hotel but not answering any of my questions. Too bad - looked great location and fun historic spot. My stay at the Truckee Hotel will be one of the most pleasurable and memorable times I have ever had in any establishment anywhere in the world. I arrived at 1:30 Saturday afternoon, having just ridden over the Yuba pass from sierraville in a freak winter snowstorm, I had made a spur of the moment decision to take a ride but foolishly with virtually no essentials on me at all. By the time I arrived in Truckee I was becoming hypothermic and just needed to get warm and find new clothes. By chance I had pulled up outside the Truckee Hotel and Moodys bar and grill. On entering the bar, I was greeted by a young gentleman by the name of Edgar, who immediately saw how cold and wet I was and brought me a hat, some gloves, and a really lovely warm shirt from Lost and Found. The experience carried on in the same manner throughout my stay. My hotel room was coz ,cute and had all the amenities you could wish for in a hotel that is over 130 years old. That evening I went to the bar and had my dinner, I was treated like a king by the bar stuff and particular, a young lady by the name of Chelsea, who took great care of me and my new friends that I found that evening. I would recommend this place wholeheartedly. I would like to point out that writing reviews is something I have never done before, but this establishment , I believe deserves a giant thumbs up, Keep up the good work Truckee Hotel . Don't stay here unless you want to deal with a rude manager and doors that do not lock. They have updated lock systems, but that is only for appearances and will not guarantee your stuff won't be stolen. If you simply turn the handle and push, you don't need any card keys to unlock the doors because they just open. The rooms are also unbearably hot and there is no way to adjust the temperature. Our window screen was also broken so keeping it open wasn't really an option. We brought this up to the manager and she refused to do anything about it and was rude and nasty and threatened to kick us out. Why even bother dealing with hostile hospitality when there are other hotels who are willing to reasonably accommodate their guests? read more

You know that scene in almost every Western where a mysterious stranger steps off the 5:10 stage, checks into the local hotel, and climbs the grand staircase to their second-floor room overlooking the lively frontier town? This is that hotel, except it's been updated to provide modern creature comforts, while still serving as a reminder of simpler, less fussy times. The staff is wonderful and accommodating; the rooms, while small, are comfortable, clean, and decorated in a mix of period and mountain-modern furnishings; and the location is perfect. It's in the heart of Truckee, with myriad dining, entertainment, and shopping destinations within a few minutes walk . . . or as close as Moody's on the hotel's first floor. The equally historic train station is only a half block away, so it's the perfect accommodation option if you're arriving by train (as we did the first time we visited, two decades ago). It's our favorite hotel (anywhere!) and it just might be yours, too. But keep your expectations realistic. It's a historic structure built of 19th century materials and to 19th century standards, in a frontier, railroad town. That means thin walls, small(ish) rooms, finicky steam heat, and baths down the hall. Bringing these things up to 21st century standards would probably mean tearing it down and starting from scratch (and Truckee would lose an important part of its history and soul). I'm not a light sleeper, but if you are, ask for a room on the north-facing side, where you won't hear as much train noise; otherwise, you may want to consider a more modern lodging option; there are plenty nearby. A few particulars to be aware of: Most of the rooms have "European style" bathrooms down the hall, but in recent years they've started assigning dedicated bathrooms for each room, so you most likely won't be sharing with strangers. Rooms do have sinks. A few of the rooms, refered to as "American style," have adjoining bathrooms. The second-floor parlor provides a TV -- most rooms don't have one -- board games, and a chance to meet fellow travelers. There's also a fantastic 2nd-floor balcony stretching across the front, where you can grab a seat in an Adirondack chair to sip your morning coffee or soak up some afternoon sun, all while watching the world go by at the bustling intersection of Bridge Street and Donner Pass Road. If thoughts of train noise and trips down the hall to use the toilet haven't scared you off, this may be the perfect location for your next trip to Truckee and Tahoe! read more

However, we smoothed it out and had a great "fix it" experience while enjoying some cocktails and apps...Check out my review on the restaurant downstairs (Moody's). The room was lovely (king, private bath) and after sitting in the claw foot tub and fantasizing about how many people must have stayed in the room in the 100+ years they've been Truckee Hotel, I chilled on the perfectly comfy bed and just hung out with my people. Would have loved to make a room reservation there, but their website is in a loop. Looked at their June calendar. It clearly says the site can't take online June reservations and to call the hotel. I called and got a snotty little girl on the phone who said that ALL reservations have to be made online, she couldn't assist at all. What kind of customer service is that? When I said the site referred me to the phone #, she informed me that means that ALL of June is booked. I told her the site doesn't indicate that and she basically said she couldn't assist. I used to live in Truckee. It was a great town, but maybe that's changed. We'll be on vacation in the area and I'd hoped to reserve a room. Clearly they aren't interested in any level of superior customer service, and at their room rates, I'd expect a whole lot more. AND, there's no email address. No way to communicate with them other than the non-customer service phone #. I won't make another attempt and will look for lodging with someone who actually wants my business. read more

Good luck even getting a room here. I have been trying for three days/nights. The hotel does not make reservations directly. "You" have to go to the web site. I did. Several times. Whatever date I put in, i.e. Friday to Sunday or Tuesday to Thursday, April through June, I got the following message. "...the hotel does not have rates identified for these dates, please call hotel." I did. And around and around we went. Geez. I know the hotel is not that busy. They only have two rooms with a private bath. I am 80 and do not want to share a bath. If the hotel would like to contact me, they have my phone number. I called last night and the calling service said I would get a call in the next hour. NOPE. No call. They do have a good restaurant but it is very noisy at night. We are staying at the Riverstreet Inn. All their rooms have bathrooms. Forget about this place. I will try one more time before I post this!! Tried again yesterday. For a first visit to Truckee I wanted the experience of stepping back in time. The Truckee Hotel was a perfect destination. I loved hearing the trains go by. We had a lovely king room with private bath on the second floor with a balcony running the length of the hotel. There was a common area for sitting, a coffee / snack area, and Moody's restaurant where we ate the first night - excellent dinner. We had a great experience at the Truckee Hotel. The room was clean, fresh and the coffee maker and Peet's coffee were really appreciated. It was great that we had bottled water, coffee and some snacks in the morning. The communication with the staff was prompt. They encouraged texting and the texts were answered right away. We also received a number of phone calls to see if our stay was going well. Just a few suggestions for the owners, the lighting in the room is so dim, please add a brighter option and maybe ceiling fans. The floor is quite uneven, we felt like we were on a cruise ship in our room. Maybe a sign or maybe thicker carpeting? Last words, it is a lovely authentic feeling old Western hotel. It is quite noisy at night, street sounds, restaurant sounds and very frequent train whistles. If you bring ear plugs for sleep, you will love it ! read more

We stayed here over Christmas break and we loved it! A family of 5 and we stayed in one of the rooms. It does get loud at night because of the train, but after reading reviews I anticipated that. They also provide ear plugs! The bathroom is a communal bathroom, and honestly I was pleasantly surprised on how clean it was! The main complain I do have that the rooms do get very dry at night. I want to really give advice to The Truckee Hotel to perhaps provide humidifiers during the winter. The breakfast is pretty basic but honestly for the price we paid, it was perfect! Having shared bathrooms was very different, but got used to it quickly, there are more than enough on each floor to never need to wait to do anything...loved the staff and the overall feel of this Hotel was Fantastic. Wasn't sure how the Wife would react to the set-up, but she Loved every aspect of the Truckee Hotel (except the steep stairs going to the third floor...LMAO) Enjoyed the fact that there was no TV, phone, microwave, mini-fridge or even an alarm clock for that matter in our European Queen room Would recommend this style of hotel to everyone to try...after all this is how things used to be. read more

The hotel was lovely, not sure why it only has 3 stars. The room was clean and comfortable. It was super cute and the staff was very nice. The only thing is, like other reviewers said, the music can be loud and goes to 11:30 at night. We were there on a Saturday so we expected it. Our room was in the back so we could barely hear it. This should be my kind of place --- bathrooms down the hall, second floor porch where you can sit and imagine measuring the horsepower of vehicles by counting the horses, electricity clearly retrofitted by bolting switches and fixtures to the wall, good old water-filled radiators in the rooms, with uninsulated pipes stenciled "HOT" connecting them to the hot water heater. However, a few questionable decisions added up to a pretty unpleasant night. The radiators were quite warm, but the windows were open --- and fans were provided in the rooms. We figured they just hadn't adjusted to winter yet, but as night closed in, the room got hotter and stuffier. We'd turned our radiator off immediately, but the hot water pipe running through our room was enough to make us open the window wide, and run the fan all night --- during a January ski vacation. We mentioned the heat to the front desk the next morning, and suggested turning down the heat a notch. They responded that yes, they'd had problems with guests complaining the rooms were too hot --- but you could open the windows and use a fan. In January. Parking's also a bit of an adventure here --- there's no lot, and you can't park on the street from 2am -- 5am, so they've got an agreement with the city on a small lot near the gas station across the street --- but you can't park there during the day. So, pay a the meters until 6pm, then move the car to the small overnight lot before it fills up, then move it back in the morning and start feeding the meter again. I really wanted to like the Truckee Hotel --- the wooden building, creaky stairs, and worn steps all felt welcoming. But sweltering heat and parking hassles really colored our experience. read more

I'm giving the hotel one star because they mentioned the music that would be played at Moody's, but failed to mention the all-night jam band from across the street. Unacceptable.
