I was disappointed...i ordered a rack of ribs (no sauce) and a lb of brisket. The ribs came cut up and the brisket was sliced. Not sure why they do that. Also, I never thought to ask how they cook their ribs, because it's a BBQ shop. After eating a few ribs, I called and asked...they confirmed, their ribs are fried in oil. Ok, good to know...just not what I was wanting from a BBQ shop. I ate them anyway, but it was tough getting the meat off the bones...and very greasy. I truly enjoyed everything we ate; we got the Four Meat Combo with Four sides. We chose Mac & Cheese, Coleslaw, Green Beans & Baked Beans with a side of fried pickles. The young lady who took our order was so kind. We asked A LOT of questions as it was our first time there & we didn't know much about the menu. I typically look at Yelp reviews for first time visits but this was a moment when we were driving down the street talking about wanting BBQ but didn't know of anyplace & "viola" there was The Pig Shop. She patiently answered every question we asked. We even made a friend while waiting. He purchased a side of potato salad after overhearing us talk about not ordering it. I was concerned that it wouldn't be as good as my grandma's. He described it to me & I was wowed that it was exactly like hers. Then he said "yeah, I ordered you a side so you could try it." What a nice guy. Needless to say, we thoroughly enjoyed the meal and have no complaints. Every dish was good! Our only regret is that we should have ordered 2 meals because one is really meant to feed 1 (maybe 2 with small appetites) and there were 4 of us. We will be returning next week because there are a couple other dishes we want to try. I plan on visiting The Pig Stop every time I'm in town visiting family. So, The Pig Shop is by my church and children's school. They cater many of their functions and also have a booth at our Carnival. I had never been to their shop. I was having a hankering for bbq after church last Sunday, so I went in and ordered. Got one of their family packs. The lady at the register was very helpful and patient as I asked my questions. They also have a specials every day of the week. I chose the special, the Rooster sandwich, spicy (fried chicken sandwich with sauce and pickles) and the family pack of 1# of pulled pork, and 3 sides of potato salad, green beans, and mac n cheese. I got hush puppies as my side with the Rooster sandwich. And I ordered 3 slices of cornbread and a sweet tea. Both of those were definitely sweet (which was great!). I loved the way they were packaged to go. (For my OCD self, presentation and neatness are super important! LOL) The buns for the pulled pork were potato rolls not just regular hamburger buns which made them tastier. They gave a sample of all of their sauces, spicy vinegar, sweet, and regular bbq sauce, as well as some Texas Pete. I loved the combination of spicy vinegar and sweet bbq sauce on the pork. The potato salad was nice and sweet, although I love more tang, so I could have had a bit more pickles/relish in it. The green beans, yum! The way I like it. Soft and mushy and salty. The mac n cheese was the only thing that was just okay for me. I would have preferred it to have a thick layer of cheese on top or maybe a little bit more cheese period. I mixed green beans in it and that made them slightly better. The Spicy Rooster sandwich was very good. I will ask for more sauce on the sandwich or maybe on the side to add. It has its own sauce. Hush puppies were good but I probably would try the fries next time to see what they taste like. Overall, I really enjoyed everything and am excited to go back and try something else on the menu. Customers should have the option to adding it themselves . But no smoke flavor so this was =2.5 Pork BBQ didn't have any flavor to it and the vinegar they offer was basically apple cider with black pepper, and BBQ sauce was just ok. Finding a good BBQ place is a challenge on the East Coast, The Pig Shop has become my favorite. Tasty BBQ, great slaw and to die for onion rings w/Boom Boom sauce! BBQ is charcoal smoked giving a clean, light smoked flavor that you can't beat. Meat is tender and lean. I've never had a fatty, overpriced sandwich from this place. Prices are respectable and definitely not overpriced, as you see in a lot of joints. They have sweet and spicy sauces and Texas Pete's if you want more heat. I would actually like for them to include a hotter BBQ (I'm a sweet heat kind of gal) and bring my own bottle of Marie's Habanero (mild) sauce with me, just to add that extra heat and slice I crave. You have your choice of regular size (good for me, as it's not too big to finish) or a larger size, perfect for the guys or if you're very hungry! The cornbread is delicious! Almost a dessert. The slaw isn't overdressed with Mayo, is crisp and a slightly sweet tang from the apple cider vinegar mixed sparingly into it. You'll love it! The restaurant is very, very clean and I've never seen it dirty. I love and definitely appreciate that. It doesn't go unnoticed. It lends me to believe the kitchen is just as clean. I can recommend about everything on the menu. The Daily Specials vary from day to day and are priced so you can give them a try. Happy Hour specials (BOGO BBQ regular size Sandwiches) for an exceptional value. Staff is always friendly, helpful and welcoming. I have started picking up dinner a couple of times a month at The Pig Shop. The bbq is tasty and has very little fat or other pieces I don't care to eat. The baked beans are delicious as is the Cole slaw. Tonight I also ordered 2 buns. They dated off and fresh. I normally get the one lb bbq, large baked beans and Cole slaw. I really wanted to like this place, but it really seemed like they gave us the brisket that was leftover from the weekend. The flavor was alright, but it was so dry and tough. Also, for the price of the two meat and side meal, the portions were incredibly small. #19/2020 I debated all weekend long if I should review my first (and possibly my only) visit here. I came to the conclusion that the likeliness of me returning is low so I still wanted to share. First of all, I've heard and read many good things about this place and it's been bookmarked for a long time. Well, under the name "Mobile Pig-nic & Catering" anyway. It was quite a hike from where we live in Virginia Beach so to make this trip for dinner we had high hopes. Upon arriving and parking, my man and I debated on getting out or going somewhere else. Even during the ride there we weren't 100% sure this was the place we wanted to go but we kept trucking anyway. I finally said "We're here now, let's just go in, plus it looks nice in there!" We shoulda listened to our starving guts and walked out because it did not smell like barbecue whatsoever inside. It smelled good, don't get me wrong, it just smelled really clean! Fabuloso clean! That's a #1 indicator if the restaurant does not smell like food, it's probably not fresh. I mean, you can't miss a barbecue joint! The girl at the counter was super nice and super sweet and it's not her fault the food came out blah and nasty. She's not the cook. I opted for the 2-Meat platter: brisket and half rack of ribs with collard greens and mac 'n cheese and a slice of corn bread. My man got the same except switched the brisket and mac'n cheese for barbecue chicken and potato salad. (Now, I have to tell you, almost all of Virginia *does not* know how to make brisket! It's not their specialty. There is just only ONE place in the 757 who knows and they're in Norfolk, btw.) Living in Texas made me a brisket expert, lol! Ever since leaving the Great State of Texas and I see brisket on the menu anywhere, I just have to try it in hopes of finding a close winner. And every time I'm disappointed!!! (Except at that one place in Norfolk.) Anyway.... As soon as the food got to the table, I already knew I was going to be hungry still. The second I laid my eyes on my brisket, I wanted to vomit. I could not believe what I was looking at. It was gray, it was old and stale looking, it was tough & dry AF, and it was a disgrace. Where was the fat? Why wasn't it glistening? I didn't have the heart to tell the girl I don't want it. She didn't even ask how was everything was because maybe then I woulda said something. And the ribs?! Zero smoke flavor. It was straight up boiled or oven baked. No flavoring, no smoke ring, no nothing. What the heck were all those smokers doing outside then? It was obvious they weren't used that day. The best part of our meal were the corn bread, the white bread, and the 90's R&B music. The positives were that it's a local business and I love that. The prices are reasonable. The place is so cute and so clean. They have their own parking lot, too! Definitely not in a rush to go back and definitely don't recommend at this time. I worked for a company from 2005-2010 that used the catering services from Mobile Pignic for numerous employee events and when I tell you that they are TOP NOTCH from customer service to food quality!!! I HAVE NOT EVER had smoked/grilled chicken so delicious. I mean seriously. I don't know what they do to the chicken but it is seriously amazing. And the BRISKET!!!! Melt in your mouth goodness. They had kind of fallen off of my radar because before now, it was rare that I was on their side of Chesapeake, however my NEW EMPLOYER used their catering services today for an appreciation picnic and everything was as I remember it! So excited that their service nor their food quality NOT CHANGED since I last had it in 7 years!!! The chicken is still nothing short of amazing (I'm telling you if I can get my greasy hands on the recipe it is going to be ON AND POPPING) and the pulled pork (some of ya'll call it barbecue) was delicious! Of course, I had mine with their homemade coleslaw and mild sauce. I am stuffed yet I am online on their website right now trying to think of what I can get to take home for dinner. Was tipped off to the place by a friend. It did not disappoint. Tucked away on Indian River Rd, near Military Hwy, it's easy to miss. It's located near the bowling alley, but on the opposite side of the street. This place is another top local bbq spot that you need to add to your list of places to try. I ordered the two meat sampler to get a sense of their menu. The pork barbeque was excellent. It is served eastern North Carolina style, meaning finely chopped pulled pork shoulder. It was tender, moist, with just the right amount of smokiness. It paired excellently with their spicy vinegar barbeque sauce. Also delightful was their cole slaw, eastern nc barbeque's natural partner. It was creamy, fresh, and delicious, with a nice hint of sweetness. It and the spicy barbeque were a perfect combination. I also had the smoked beef brisket. Although not close to the best I've had locally, it was very good. It had a nice smokiness and was not at all dried out, which can be a problem with brisket. It was leaner and cut thinner than I prefer with brisket, and did not have the tasty outer bark I look for in Texas-style brisket. I don't think that was their intention, it's just my personal preference of style. Be sure to check in on Yelp before you order and a 10% discount coupon will pop up! The Pig Shop used to cater our annual company cookout every year. I so looked forward to their grilled chicken, it was the best I ever had. Recently I went by there to get some chicken. Unfortunately they had sold out. They had a large party right before I arrived. I ordered ribs instead for the first time. I was underwhelmed! For one, they were not hot. I'm not sure if they had been sitting for awhile since it was evening, but I would have thought they would have at least warmed them more. The taste was okay but baked on the Chicken, I was expecting so much more. The size of the half slab seemed small (about 5 maybe 6 ribs) but it could also be because I haven't had ribs in quite some time. I do plan to try the Chicken again. I'm a truck driver and I've had brisket all over the United States. The brisket here, is the worst I've ever had, it's dry, no flavor and tough.
