I liked the roasted chicken a lot. We tried brisket, ribs, turkey and sausage as well. The chicken was the best, hands down. Super moist, great flavor, perfectly cooked. Everything else was on par with Austin BBQ. Minus a star for having nasty, ketchupy BBQ sauce. read more

If you find yourself in Austin stop into this place. Me and my wife stopped in for breakfast. She got a Austin Burrito and I got the Cowboy Burrito. Both are amazing and huge!!! My wife likes huge burritos..... Both options give you the choice of meats, bacon chorizo, sausage, ham, brisket, fajitas, barbacoa or chicken. I got the Brisket and it is crazy good. And let me repeat myself these burritos are huge. At first I thought this place was pricey. I am here you tell you you get what you pay for. Don't miss out on the homemade sauce and salsa. Donn's isn't just "another BBQ place!" They have a greatly expanded menu with breakfast available all day. Breakfast plates include all the favorites ranging from migas in all their varieties, to egg and bacon/sausage platters, biscuits and peppered gravy, pancakes and waffles, to breakfast sandwiches. Of course they do the regular BBQ meats, but also offer hamburgers, chicken fried steak, a catfish plate, and fajitas with that awesome aroma that makes you wish you had ordered that when a sizzling plate passes by! Condiments and drink refills are on a counter across the dining room from the order/dessert counter, and tables are nicely arranged for comfortable, roomy, seating. So we are visiting Texas and high on our agenda is good BBQ. Unfortunately, we decided to look for it on New Year's Eve around 6 PM and we had no idea that it was a thing for barbecue restaurants to "run out of meat". Soooo weird. This was the fourth BBQ restaurant that we stopped at and the only one that wasn't close because of the holiday or a lack of meat. We were willing to eat almost anything at this point, but as it turns out... The food was AMAZING. We arrived at 630 and they were closing at 7, yet they were patient, friendly and answered all our random touristy questions. (Including... Do people really walk around wearing guns in Austin? How crazy is that??) My fiancé had the turkey, brisket, beef ribs, baked beans and Mac and cheese. I had the pork ribs, beef ribs, green beans, and French fries. We devoured ALL of it. In record time. It was DELICIOUS and the brisket was so tender I only got one bite before my fiancé snatched his plate back. We used to eat there all the time. Went back today to get barbacoa and charro beans. Ot has been nearly a year now and I remember why. The place has gone way downhill since the new ownership. More commercial. Super fatty (Brain material)barbacoa. I mean ground tiny too so its hard to pick through. 2 lbs I won't eat. Charro beans are bland bland bland. Boiled pinto beans is all they are. I wasn't happy with the barbq last time either. Either dry or full of fat to trim. Bland too. Like the care is gone. Good things never last forever. I don't think we'll ever return. This was a really nice surprise! Great place, my only complaint was that it was kind of messy in the restaurant. Perhaps we came in after a rush, but the floors were really bad. And to make matters worse, it looked as if someone tried to clean the floor by using a strong-smelling cleanser - (such as Pine-Sol) and the smell permeated the place. You can't taste your food when that happens. But- all that aside, once i got to the car, the realization of how great the food is really hit us. If you get the chance, go to Donns! read more

RESTAURANT INSPECTION SCORE: 100 (02/18/2011) We're past due on an update for my review of Donn's. A lot has changed since 2008. Green Mesquite left for greener pastures at Southpark Meadows; good riddance, because they sucked. The Bill Miller on William Cannon closed for good, taking the other mediocre competition in the immediate vicinity out of the picture. Here at Donn's, the venerable owner, who once made a daily appearance, is no longer around, ostensibly due to age/health issues. Although the same self-managed crew is behind the counter, one gets the feeling that things seem to have slipped just a tad. French fries and fried okra have been added to the menu, which are tasty welcome additions; just don't expect hand-cut/-breaded fresh-from-the-farm in either case--it's straight food-service grade product. And, sadly, prices are incrementally higher, although I must say the family packs remain a much better deal in price and quality than you'll find at the competition. Brisket is still moist and tender as always, and I recently discovered their jalapeño sausage, which is a must-taste. Their potato salad is still far superior to that of most barbecue joints in the area. The sauce remains thin, and I usually tell them to skip it. Sadly, the included bread that is straight Hill Country Fare from the HEB just across Highway 71 is often stale. While the changes at Donn's are not quite enough to make me seek out a regular alternative barbecue joint in the 'hood, I think I will alternate my to-go 'cue fixes with Hays County BBQ in San Marcos. read more

Why hello there, Donn, and I will have some BBQ now that you mention it. This BBQ joint is one of those tucked in Oakhill that I've driven past almost literally a thousand times on my way out to Dripping Springs, Driftwood and Wimberley, and today, wrung out from time spent out of town, I was determined to reconnect with my Texan roots via some down n dirty traditional Texas brisket. The good news is that traditional BBQ is found in abundance here, from the lunchtime brisket I prevailed upon to the heaping sides of pinto beans and whole kernel corn which are some of my favorites. My lone complaint (other than the fact that I had to hurry to get back and couldn't linger) was the fact that the sauce here ran a little on the thin side: flavorful, sure, but thin. Also, if you ask for extra sauce (in fairness I've not seen exactly how much extra sauce we're talking about here), that'll run you the cost of a side dish. So you'd best really want some sauce, friend. In all, another very serviceable option for those of us traveling this direction on occasion, and I'm sure I'll be back. A bit disappointed and a bit over cooked, the best way I can explain it. It was a tad bit busy the day I went, and the hospitality I was use to across BBQ restaurants wasn't here and I felted rushed. My two meat plate contained just one rib, and the fatty brisket I ordered had a bit to much unrendered fat and not enough tender tasty brisket. Smoke flavor was faint, and sauce was nothing special. The price was ok, but considering I wasn't served alot of food it was right in what I would expect. Everything else, from the sides to the sausage, was average and maybe even the typical sysco brand. My husband and I always go for breakfast but have had lunch here on occasion. The breakfast tacos and breakfast biscuit sandwich is our absolute favorite also their charro beans are so flipping good!! My only complaint which I was saying yesterday is they should put more than one piece of bacon on a sandwich and not split one to make two. That's hardly enough for the sandwich. its been 3 months since we've been there bc our last order was not good. I ordered 2 combo sandwiches for $21. We get home and start pulling the toppers out of the bag and the onions were mixed in with the pickles .Now i know that onions and pickles are staples for a bbq sandwich but I cannot eat raw onions, they make me sick. so I was really disappointed that i couldn't even add pickles to my sandwich. both sandwiches were flavorless, I mean nothing at all! I smothered mine with sauce and it was still hard to eat bc it was just meat with very little smoke or seasoning. some pickles would have helped. Pretty good BBQ. Clean, quick service. Mom liked the potato salad best. It was different but she liked. Dad's favorite was the coleslaw. Good wet cole slaw. I always get sausage and it was pretty good and flavorful. I tried the jalapeño and regular both. I'm not a spicy person so the peppers were a bit much but not intolerable. I do have to say, not a fan of their BBQ, I like the thicker, less vinegary, sweeter type. But that's all personal preference so you might like. read more

Went to place an order on 4-8-20 for some brisket after googling the Oak Hill location and clicking on the website option to check the price, listed at $13.99 a pound. When I placed my order it was rung up at $18.99 a pound. I mentioned that it showed as $13.99 on the website, the cashier, Destiny, just looked at me and said in an irritated tone, "yeah, that's been wrong for a long time if you look for our menu on google, you're total is $XX.XX." It's been wrong on google for a long time? What else do people use to look up menu prices other then google? Sure enough on the receipt it shows a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT website then what is attached to the website link when you google search the location. Judging by her irritated tone she has had this brought up to her many, many times, and her bosses/owners apparently don't care enough to have their information corrected on google so that they don't accidentally mislead potential customers with the wrong price. If this has been a problem for a long time, then I think it's safe to say that the owners are intentionally not having this problem fixed so that they can intentionally mislead customers with the wrong price and are just hoping no one questions the price of their order. A colleague and I recently has lunch here for the first time. My expectations were low from previous experiences at Franklin, Blacks, and LA BBQ to name a few of the best. However, after having the fatty brisket and jalapeño sausage...Four stars! Exceeded expectations and will definitely be back. Side note: they have okra!
