In a business as ubiquitous as key making, the only things that really differentiates a business is customer service and location. Unfortunately, Don's Key & Lock has the worst customer service I have encountered in quite some time. I wish I would have read some of the other reviews because it seems as if my experience was not out of the ordinary. My experience was with the woman that worked there (maybe his wife?) so it appears to be a universal thing with their employees. Stay away unless you like encouraging businesses to maintain this type of behavior. I would much rather patronize a business that appreciates it's customers. read more

We called Don's to fix our broken electronic door. Jon's showed up. He's a nice guy, but he ended up installing the wrong part, and now our door doesn't open properly. I've tried to call his office several times to get him back out to fix it. Each time the nice receptionist says Jon will call back, but he never does. He took our money and we don't have a working door. For the (high) prices they charge, I expected way better. Next time, I'll call a legit locksmith, not these guys. read more

Called these guys when I was locked out of my apartment on Friday of a holiday weekend. Contacted them at 5:40 and I was in my house by 6:10! They were friendly and professional, both on the phone and when they came to unlock my door. Added them to my iPhone address book in case I ever do this again. Very poor customer service. I just wanted a simple re-key of a deadbolt lock. Guy was going to do until the older lady told him to tell me to come back in 2 hours. When I protested that I waited for 10 minutes while he helped another customer buy some padlocks he re-keyed my lock. It took him 5 minutes. I felt the service was poor because I am a man of color!! I called Don's Key & Lock earlier today because my keys had been stolen along with my wallet and hence with my address. I talked to a guy about having them come and rekey the front door for safety. The guy said they'd call to let me know they were on the way, and so I waited. And waited. And waited. Then I called again and got a different person, who told me they were so busy maybe they could put me on the list for tomorrow! Now I understand that they might be very busy, but why not tell me that hours earlier so I wasn't sitting here waiting for help that wasn't coming. I've called another business... let's hope their promise to come right over is more valid! read more

Awful. Poor customer service. Security Techs did NOT know their stuff. We had a burglary and the guys came out to re-key the locks. Fine- I think that is all they know what to do. They recommended enhancing security and 'ordered' parts to do so. after almost daily calls to them to follow up and get status - while our main entry was 100% compromised - finally 2 weeks later a tech shows up but with no parts and NO CLUE as to the proper fix and leaves the site without one word of explanation. The part had never been ordered as we were told it was. I thought it was a bad comedy skit but unfortunately it wasn't. Amazing. Sorry Don, time to work on the business plan or maybe close up? If you want your keys or your locks DONE RIGHT, this is the place to go. I had a deadbolt lock on my gate that was super finicky. They could have sold me an entirely new lock but - instead, helped realign (?) the one I had and cut fresh keys. Turns out that when you get copies of copies made at the local hardware store, they key and lock get out of alignment over time. Don's Key & Lock do it right. They make a key that is custom to your lock. Not a copy of your copy of your copy. So, if you want a key that is going to open easy - every time, do it here. Our lock is now 'like new' and we didn't need to buy a new one! Plus, they helped me troubleshoot getting the lock back on the gate after I got home. I started with Don and Donnie ended up coming out to help. Great guys, great service, keep it up! read more

My office is across the street from Don's Key and Lock, so I use them regularly. It takes less than a minute to get keys made which is so convenient, and the service is always really friendly. I once called them to re-key a filing cabinet at one of our other offices across town- someone had lost their key and desperately needed to get into their desk and they had a technician out and the desk open within 30 minutes. As a Realtor, it's very important to have a locksmith you can trust and Don's has made a loyal customer out of me! read more

I was having problems with my lock and had another (closer) locksmith come to look at it. This other locksmith made things far worse and I had to purchase a replacement lock body ($200). I called Don's to get some advice on what to do and they were extremely helpful over the phone. They showed up on time and inspected the work that had been done before, showing me where the previous locksmith had made things worse. They fixed the lock and adjusted the door so it's working better than ever. Had I gone with Don's originally I would have saved $200. Highly recommend going with Don's. read more

Don't bother. Don's Key and Lock installed a simple keyed lock on our garage and it failed less than 90 days later. They refused to honor the warranty until they found the "slip". Three and a half hours after being unable to find the "slip" despite being told of the date when it was installed another employee called and started the whole routine all over again. Then he waxed indignant over our exasperation of our having to lose a day while they could not find the "slip". It is obvious that Don's Key and Lock was incompetent in their installation of working locks but also their filing. Don't bother with Don's Key and Lock. Go elsewhere. Nobody likes to deal with locks. I had a problem and the locksmith showed me how to fix it myself and only charged me for a core removal key. He helped me understand how it works to fix it right, and what could have been a $100-200 problem cost me $1.80. I will get all my future lock stuff here. read more

Courteous, quick and able to make a key that no one else in town seemed to able to copy.

This place is awful. The WORST. I had to use them because my homeowner's association has them make all the keys for the building. After working with Don's Key & Lock, I suggested they change vendors. After a month of "correspondence," I never even got the keys I needed! I just had the HOA manager send them to me. These people don't return phone calls or emails, and the staff apparently never talks to each other. The one time I went there, these 2 kids were running the place. Neither one of them had a clue or seemed to care about their jobs or customers. It took them forever to find my multiple emails and phone messages... only to be found in a manila folder which obviously no one ever looks at. They were completely rude and unapologetic for the hideous service I was receiving. Maybe one good thing about our sinking economy is that hopefully places like this will not survive. I would think that customer service EVERYWHERE would be of the utmost importance when business is down. I GUARANTEE that there are people out there that would take their job a lot more seriously than the kiddos running around at Don's Key & Lock now. These guys just saved me at least $400 in replacing an electronic car key. The dealerships want to rip you off. Instead, Don's figured out a way to do this for $110 instead. I'm due with my first baby in 10 days so time was of the essence; and Don's figured out how to get this done within a couple of days by ordering the key and cutting and programming it within a few days of my first coming in to the store. Wow, I cannot believe that a company with customer service this bad can stay in business. Our home was recently broken into, so we needed to replace our lock set because it had been damaged. We went to the showroom to see the lock displays - which were great. Upon choosing a lock set, we were told that it would take about 7-10 days to receive the lock. When it arrived they said that we would be charged $65 visit fee and $50/hr for installation. When I called back a week later to check on the status, the lock had not been ordered yet, AND they informed me that installation was $100/hr (what??). When the lock FINALLY came in (a full 19 days after our initial order), we were informed that the installation fee was now $125/hr. Make sure you get everything in writing before using this company - if you have to use this company at all. read more

Stopped in just to get some simple duplicate keys made. They were very friendly and quick about it. Offered to make them with different colored keys so I could tell the sets apart. I thought that was a nice extra touch, which is probably standard with most key places, but they didn't have to do it and they did. And for that I give them 5 stars. read more

I am really happy with the service here. I knew about Don's Lock and Key because they were referenced on the keys to my place, but when I had them provide re-key services I didn't have a good reference point to know how the price was. The tech came onsite and re-keyed everything as asked and I had no problems with the work done. Recently though I had to change a lock and due to timing and cost was trying to do it on my own. Don and his team went above and beyond to make it a low cost effort that I could do on my own, including some assistance he definitely should have charged for. All he charged me for was the actual lock and when I asked him about the rest he just told me it would even out next time. Very satisfied customer! read more

Made some good suggestions and then didnt charge me for a service call when I needed to think about it. Good lord but they're fast at key-copying, so fast that I don't even have time to cringe at the metal-cutting noise. And they had a blank for a 1970 Volvo P1800 door key. I love Cole Hardware across the street from Don's, but for the obscure stuff Don's is the neighborhood resource. Also, last time I went in they had someone's little boy manning the register. I'm not a huge fan of children, but this kid (and by kid, I mean grade-schooler) was more polite and professional than any adult cashier I'd dealt with in the prior month. read more

We wanted to support their business and appreciated Robert's calling multiple suppliers and even checking different styles to see if the lead time to receive would have been reduced. I have been working with don's for years. I work both as a property manager and in construction. I have been to other locksmiths (sometimes I am on the other side of town). I have found the staff to be the most knowledgeable. I often come to them with problems I don't have an answer to and they have come through every time. I spend a lot of time there (I often bring in multiple locks thay need to be rekeyed) so I see how they treat other customers and I have never seen them be less than courteous so I find some of the negative reviews surprising. I always recommend Don's to my family friends and colleagues. read more

Great service, excellent quality of hardware (just bought some for my new TIC), and quick work. Pretty nice folks, except for the ambivalent older woman behind the counter who could care less if I went across the street to ACE hardware for key copies. But this doesn't deter me from getting great customer service from everyone else. The locksmiths are awesome!!!
