I've done more major work (rekeying a home lock and a car glove box lock vs. just having keys made) with them twice. They rekeyed my home lock for $35 and my car glovebox lock for $45. Plus tax, of course. The prices are reasonable, they do good work, and they're nearby. Why not five stars? Both times, same scenario. When you call the number on Yelp, you get Mike, who is out in the field a lot. You work out a deal with him via email (665keys@gmail.com) and/or telephone. He's a bit hasty, likely super busy, but you manage. Then you get to the shop to find that the guy there doesn't know what the hell you're talking about and expects to quote a higher price. He's open to the explanation that Mike has already made the deal, though, after he sees a couple emails. This whole business is a bit frustrating. The second turn-off, though more minor, is cash only, one of my pet peeves. I normally charge everything for record, tracking, and points, and the amount of cash I carry varies. A minor inconvenience. Overall, I do recommend this place. Just keep in mind the downsides and note that lock prices vary based on the types of locks. read more

We used this locksmith for years (always the same guy, Mike). He used to be great. Last job was a few years ago, $300. Contacted him for same job, he quoted $445! The reason was that, based on photos I texted him, my locks/doors were badly done. I was like, hey, you were the one who installed them. Made an appointment with him anyway and he was so late (no show after an hour and half), that I told him not to come. This was after multiple calls, emails, and texts. What is a boy to do when his so called building manager ignores his requests to fix the sticky worn out lock on his apartment door? Take matters into his own hands and get an on call locksmith to come by on a Sunday night at 7:00 pm when his rates are highest. Pay the guy and deduct it from the rent! Oh and there will also be a deduction for a hotel stay due to the lock not working at 11:00 pm on a Saturday night. Locksmith Central recently set up shop in Noe Valley and they were amazing. I work in Noe Valley and every once in a while I need a key copied. Every time I come to Locksmith Central it is fast and precise. I was walking over a few weeks back to grab a couple of key copies before the shop closed and I realized I had forgotten my money at home, which was 6 blocks away! As I am waiting in line the owner makes eye contact with me and can see I am frustrated and in a hurry. He said that he'd be right with me and that is when I explained I'd left my cash at home. A few years ago I had them upgrade my lock that requires a specially-made key. Trying to get another key from this store has been a challenge. A few months ago I called the owner and ordered 5 keys. He gets the calls on his cell even if the store is open. The keys cost $20 each, but this would keep me happy for a while. Last Wednesday I arrived at the store but the door was locked with a sign that said that they would return, which they did within a few minutes. I had started walking away and ran into the guy returning to the store. They didn't have my keys! He called someone to see if the keys were "in the office". OK. Deep breath. I said I would return the following week but this time I made the order for just 3 keys. I did get a call this week saying that the keys were ready. Before driving to the store this time I called first to be sure the store was open. The man in the store only had one key!!! Not the 3 I ordered!!!!!! And then he was irritated when I told him that I ordered 3 from him last week. He got really annoyed . I called the store number. Apparently all store calls go to the owner's phone vs. the shop). A woman answered and I explained what happened. She stated that the owner was on a job, but would call later...and that was about 2:00pm. By the time Mike returned the call I was long gone and didn't hear the phone call saying that they did mess up and I could return to the shop and they could make the 2 additional keys. What about the this experience would make me want spend another hour in my car - plus pay for additional gas and metered parking - to be faced with a grumpy unfriendly store salesman? They didn't even offer a discount for my inconvenience of having to drive there yet again! So much for getting more keys made!!!! I will try to see if I can get this key made by another place. I know that they charge more for site visits because I have seen their bids on several jobs. I can't imagine ever again wanting to do business with this store. I have a 1997 Geo metro which is great in all aspects except the locks have slowly, gradually stopped working, which wasn't a problem when I lived in idyllic palo alto and could leave my car doors open without concern. However, now that I live in SF I need to get the locks fixed, darnit! I called Locksmith Central to ask about getting the locks fixed and ask when I should come by because they don't have any hours on yelp and I got the most garbled, confusing, answer ever. Maybe it's because they are used to urgent lock-out situations but this is a transcription of the conversation: Me: "When can I come by the shop to get the locks looked at?" Phone Lady: "He doesn't do locks. He just retools keys. He doesn't make much money, just 2.50 per key" Me: "He? who is He?" Phone Lady: "Doug" Me: "Who is Doug?" Phone Lady: "The guy who works at the shop. Our other road guy is on the road and we don't know where he is unless you call us and we tell you where he is and we find him." Me: "Okay well I guess I could find him now" Phone Lady: "Okay well you can meet him at the shop in half an hour but if you are late he will leave because he's just going to use the bathroom and then he's going to go back out on the road." So, I lost my keys to my motorcycle...in my own apartment. I searched for them for 2 weeks, but couldn't find them anywhere. My only conclusion was that this chick that came over that one night took them (Katie? Cari? Colleen? ...apparently I was wicked plastered too...) These guys did an awesome job. They: 1) Had keys in stock for a *motorcycle* (anyone who owns one knows this isn't the easiest thing to find) 2) Came out in the middle of the day to make the key...and I didn't even need to be home! They let me come pick them up at their store later in the evening when I was off work. 3) Did all this for a reasonable cost ($195 for the lockout + $5 for each extra key). The cost may sound steep, but if you've ever lost the only key to a vehicle, its really tough to beat that number. Just bend over, breathe deeply, and grab the lube. In general, these guys did an awesome job making a painful situation much less of a pain in my ass. P.S.: If it was the drunkenness that lost the keys, and not a vindictive one nighter, I apologize for the accusation. I called Michael in a pinch last night, after locking myself out and having waited for an hour and a half for another locksmith (who called me about 5 times telling me he would be there in 5 minutes- see my other review). I was tired, hungry, and freezing by the time I called, but Michael and his partner were in the area, and literally arrived within 5 minutes. It was actually uncanny, and superhero-like. At first, I was a bit taken a back by his quote but it turns out the other locksmiths do this bait and switch thing when they get there- so I'm glad that he gave me a flat rate and didn't try anything shady. I was in no mood for it... but you're in a pretty untenable position when you're locked out of your own house. Anyway, Michael and his partner came right away, came right in, and picked the lock with scary precision and speed. It was a huge relief. When he saw how incredulous I looked, he mentioned that he had won a lock picking contest a few years in a row- and I believe him. He's the fastest lockpicker I have ever seen, period. All I can would think when he left was- what a great guy. I'm glad he's not shady, because he could really do some serious damage. :) I'll definitely be calling Michael Young again. read more

Ok, this place is just no frills, straight to the point, prompt, professional service. Can't really ask for more than that with a locksmith. I wish I had known they are one of the only locksmiths locally that can replicate mailbox keys as I wouldn't have ended up in my recent predicament. Had my jacket stolen from a club downtown (whole other drama as they had to get into the VIP section and past a group of friends so still feel like something shady happened here rather than just your average drunkass club thief - but anyway...) I bank online, no longer use checks, communicate with friends through facebook and email etc. Basically, trying to keep my correspondence in the 21st century as much as possible. So losing my mail key just wasn't that big of a deal to me. As such, I put my mail on hold, and then forgot about it for 2 months. Bad idea, 21st century or not, Jury summons only come by snail mail and I nearly missed it - thank god I called these guys up when I did! Within an hour they had stopped by ripped out the old lock, gave me several keys - informed me that if I ever lose one of them, they can make duplicates so I don't need a new lock, and then handed me the $111 bill. YIKES! However, this not being my first run in with locksmiths I expected the price. That said, I've never received service this great, prompt, and overall just professional. Now a life-long supporter of Locksmith Central I stopped in this week to make a new set of keys for a guest and within 2 minutes start to finish I was off to lunch. I came in upset past the point of rationality after a friend lost my "good key". Michael was kind enough to walk with me to my car to test a new key that he made, but then when it didn't work in the doors, he told me there was no point in my purchasing it. I was having a pity party and went along with that . That was my only key, which was stolen with my wallet 3 days later. Now I have no car key at all, just a bunch of regret for not having a spare key so that I could at least move my street-parked car. I called the shop back to see what became of the key I was dissuaded from purchasing, hopeful for helpfulness and a miracle of sorts. Mike, the owner, would not spend any time looking for the key or allow me to come do it, or call Micael to ask him for more information, since he's working elsewhere today. Mike recommended I get a key molded to the ignition by another locksmith for around ~$200, and that someone else should do it. Helpful? Sometimes. Expert advice? Not really. Great customer experience? No. They made me feel like they didn't really want my business. This is all on me, and boy, that's how I feel. read more

Michael was great. Not cheap, but great. I had an urgent situation and needed to be let in ASAP on an emergency call at 11PM on a holiday weekend, and none of the other locksmiths I had called (including one on my block) had answered their phones. This dispatcher picked up and, when I explained my situation, offered to redirect a truck on another call not too far from me that could arrive in 10-15 minutes instead of waiting for the next available truck. He was very clear about the prices for each option (I believe it was $140 for regular, $190 for emergency) and I agreed to the emergency service. Michael arrived 7 minutes later and two minutes after that I was inside. That's less than 10 min from when I gave them the go-ahead. Michael was punctual, professional, and sympathetic to my situation. It's $200 that I wish I hadn't had to spend on a stupid mistake, but it was absolutely worth it, especially for the caliber of service I received. read more

The 2-hour window ("2P - 4P") was set, and Michael called just before 3P to say they were on the way. They got the job done quickly, neatly, and made all the extra keys I needed on the spot. Today was my LUCKY day. I stopped here to tell the story about how I broke off part of my key in my trunk and couldn't get it out. The expense to do so would have been exorbitant for an older car. Mike (smiley mike?) offered his expertise to give it a try at a VERY reasonable price. I agreed. I had tried myself before I met him which was a mistake and it was such a thrill to see Mike's expertise in getting my key out properly, without creating further damage. He is skillful, patient, really knows his stuff, and locked up the store temporarily so he could come out to my car to help me. He pretty much was on target as to why the key broke off...guilty as charged (never use your key to open the trunk, it WILL break eventually). I also got some excellent advice to avoid future problems, and watching Mike do his thing was amazing to me. When I saw the tip of the key I was more than thrilled. I locked my keys in the car and I called a local locksmith in the area but it turns out they don't unlock cars. They, however, recommended calling Michael from Locksmith Central to unlock my car. I called the number and got a lady on the phone. She asked me for the make/model of my car, where I was parked, my name, number, and a credit card number to pay a fixed price of $125 to unlock my car. I really wasn't ready to pay such a price but I was desperate to just get this done right away so why the heck not. The lady said that it should take about 30-45 minutes for their van to get to me. It took about 30 minutes or so for the van to arrive and I was greeted by Michael. It took about a few minutes to get my car unlocked. He then took my keys from inside the car, examined it, and gave it to me. He said that I should get a new key because it looked worn and that it could break. It would be disastrous if the broken key is stuck inside the ignition. He also talked about getting a key magnet case to put it outside my car just in case I lock myself out again. He also gave me a tip about asking my car insurance if they could cover my unlocking fee. Michael not only unlocked my car - he gave me helpful information. My brother used him to replace a doorknob lock, he did rekey the lock and it looks like a decent job. He added latch guard. But he charged him 522.10! This is just one doorknob lock. Outrageous, he took my brother for a fool. The last time my brother used him to fix a lock it was over 1200.00 to change the front door lock and made some repairs to the door. If you don't know your prices he will rip you off. Use Rhinoceros or Davis Duong Locksmith both are fantastic and will not take advantage of you. read more

Had a problem with multiple break-ins in my building. I called around for locksmiths and ran into a lot of shady businesses - ones with no local addresses, lots of fake-sounding reviews at their website, phone operators that didn't know anything about locks!?, and one guy that suggested illegal fixes (like deadbolts on the front door of a multi-unit building) and told me my interest in other lock brands or other solutions were no good or didn't exist. I call Locksmith Central and straight away all my requests were honored: new electric strike, 'bumpproof' locks, door-length latch guard, and the welcome suggestion to install an automatic garage door closer. I'm not one to throw around a 5 star review, but I am far more inclined to lift somebody up for doing something excellent. The joys of living in an old building. My door nob broke recently, I was trapped inside for hours tinkering on the mechanism with a Holly Hobby tool set, before finally giving up and calling Lockworld's 24hr service line (never heard back). After waiting for an hour with no response, I checked Yelp and found Locksmith Central. At 11p on a Friday, I was quoted a reasonable flat rate for 'after hours emergency service' (obviously could've charged more under the circumstances) and a commitment to be on site in less than an hour. He made it from Noe Valley to Inner Richmond in less than 30 minutes, and proceeded to set me free 20 minutes later. The service was outstanding, so I had him come back and install a new lock during normal business hours. There's a reason that contractors and developers recommend and use Mike. He's just amazing. My contractor, Greig Nielson recommended Mike to me five years ago. I've used him twice. The first time, he re-keyed my front and back door after I moved in to my new home with a very high grade coded key that replaced the two key system and deadbolt. He's very security conscience (as am I) so I couldn't have felt more secure! The second time was yesterday. I spoke to him to explain my situation about a trespasser who was opening my front gate and coming into my front yard and vandalizing my plants and property. He asked me several questions so he could be prepared when he arrived. He also asked me to send me pictures of the gate to aide him. Upon his and Kelly's arrival, he worked with me to ensure that I had the proper lock and knob on the inside. He made sure that I wouldn't have any water seeping into the lock by drilling a hole so that any water from rain would drain out and not rust my lock.
