Walking into this place was such a wonderful and pleasant experience. It first started by how clean the entire place was followed by the young gentleman (Damian) who greeted me as I walked in. The place was rather busy and yet this young man acknowledged me by telling me he would be right with me. Once it was my turn I asked if it was possible to make copies of our keys for our napkin dispenser. He asked if he could see the key but of course I didn't even bring it with me. I didn't want to confuse the young man so I told him I'd bring it in next time. I promptly remembered that I also needed copies of my house keys and asked if he could assist me with that. With a smile on his face he gladly said of course. Showed me there wall selection of designs and I was able to pick my forty Niners design. He was really quick in making my keys and reminded me to bring in the other key for my paper towel dispenser so that he can take a look at it and hopefully make copies for me. I really appreciate the excellent customer service that I received that day. Before leaving the store I took a look around at all the gorgeous doorknobs and fell in love with quite a few things. I needed to get a lock rekeyed to match another one in our house. I know *nothing* about locks. I called Don's, and they were extremely helpful on the phone--they told me to just bring in the lock, and the key to the other lock. Salesperson's responsiveness was spotty. I asked for a quote for 80-90 kitchen pulls for a new kitchen- never received it, even after I sent an email reminder. So, someone else got the business. I purchased a few items. They came out to do the work- added a doorknob and deadbolt. After they installed it, the existing sliding lock no longer worked. A comedy of errors. These guys used to be my "go to". NOT ANYMORE!!!! A year ago I asked them to make several keys for a padlock to a storage area that is accessed by multiple people. NONE of the new keys work. I get that padlock keys can be difficult. Returned to the store and they made replacements using a different blank. All was well. Yesterday I needed to repeat the above process. Keys cut, happily on my way, get to location - NONE OF THE KEYS WORK. Really??!! Again??!! Return to the store mildly irritated. This time I decide it will be better if I purchase a lock from them and have them make keys for it so they can test in situ (the first time this happened I got a mild mansplain as to the reason the keys didn't work was bc I was using a cheaper lock than they sell ......) The same guy "helped" me again. I guess I should have taken a clue from the fact that he struggled to even open the package that the new lock was encased in (see the irony here folks??!!). Eventually the lock was released from its packaging and he cut the new keys for the new lock - NONE OF THE KEYS WORKED He continued to cut/file/grind on his machine for the next several minutes. Still; NONE OF THE KEYS WORKED. During this time he happily answers the phone, talks to other people and even stops to "help" another (male) customer that just walked in the door. When I object to this I get another mansplainy lecture on how things "don't work like that" and that the guy was in the store earlier. Hmmmm - well; based on that illogic so was I but, yes, I am not in the testosterone club so things really do not "work like that"! At this point I asked for my money back. Far too much time wasted already. He twittered around with the cash drawer/computer, asked me several times (despite holding the receipt in his hand) if I paid by cash/card then said he needed to call his boss bc he couldn't authorize my refund. I wait 4-5 more minutes then ask him to please call his boss again. He doesn't call his boss but then opens the cash drawer and starts pulling out the cash! Me: "I thought you said you couldn't do that?" Him: "I can't" Me: (finally reaching the end of my patience string) "It seems like you can't do much at all this morning" Him: (Slamming the door closed) "well you can just stand there and wait for my boss for being rude to me". Eventually the boss shows up and issues me a refund. Don's losses include one lock opened and out of package, 14 key blanks in the trash and a (once loyal DESPITE hiccupy previous experience) customer who will never go back and is telling every woman I know to not patronize the patriarchy here. read more

Don's was my go to lock company for 20 years. My dad used them for everything for the apartments he managed and they always did a great job. Fast forward 20 years and a colleague asked for a recommendation for a key specialist and I recommended Don's. They came out quickly but then when the garage lock didn't work after two weeks, they were no longer interested. He called twice and stopped by twice and was assured that someone would follow up. We came here on the referral from Hundley Hardware who are closing down their retail hardware business. They transferred their retail cabinet hardware business to Don's. The shop is located on Mission St and 29th Street. Upon entering the shop, there were tons of cabinet hardware displays on the walls, column displays and on the floor. So many to choose from, you need to be focused on what you are looking for otherwise it's information overload! We were looking for stainless steel or brushed/satin nickel handles and pulls. It's definitely worth your time to go and touch and feel the hardware. Not all pulls are made the same. The placement of the edges and curves matter! We liked a stainless pull and a nickel knob by different companies. The sales person said they are a pretty close match in color. He took the two displays and put them together and he was right! An easy and money saving experience. Don's could have sold me a $70 and unnecessary exact replacement for my gate latch. Instead they sold me a piece that was $8, and spent the time to explain exactly how I could modify it to fit. It works better than ever, and will last longer that the expensive piece. Thank you, so glad Don's is there! Specifically, I had a gate latch which was the type that you could buzz people in, but it was no longer hooked up. It started to fail, such that the gate wouldn't close unless you really slammed it. The exact replacement was $70, because of the electronics which I don't need, and it still had the same weaknesses which would eventually fail in the same way. They also explained that nobody makes a fixed strike plate with the exact dimensions as this unit. He showed me how I could modify an $8 strike plate, and explained what tools I would need (what I didn't have cost about $15). It was a relatively easy project and only took a few iterations to be working perfectly. read more

Don's is A+ in customer service -- I had a huge motorbike chain with a padlock that I lost the key to. Without missing a beat they worked their voodoo magic and returned the chain to me sans padlock. I really wanted to like this place! I ordered a replacement key from them for my Toyota. They said it would take 2 weeks to come in and that they'd call. I never heard from them again. I called back after 3 weeks, and again after another 2 weeks, and then again after another month. Every time they took a message and said they would call back, but they never called me back. Anyway, I finally gave up and made an appointment at the Toyota dealership for a replacement key. read more

More than a $125 for a 30 second job opening a lock.. They know you are not going to turn them away (what are you going to do? you have no choice!), and they really take advantage of that. Just because you provide a service people cannot go without doesn't mean you should be able to charge them whatever you want. Edit/update (in response to comment from owner): yes, it's an emergency situation, that's my point. You take advantage of a situation people have no other way around, and overcharge from it. Apologies I didn't include your wages, electricity, driving time, etc. Clearly that *very* expensive brand new Mercedes your guy showed up with must take quite a bit to maintain (and reinforces the fact you do *not* overcharge at all) - my apologies. read more

I brought them a tricky deadbolt lock to rekey - it was an odd configuration, with completely different keys on either side of the lock. They really tried, and while ultimately the Ace brand and curious previous modifications of the lock made the repair impossible, they were friendly about it, explained what was going on, described my options, and charged me nothing. I just had an excellent experience with Donnie and feel he deserves a 5 star review. I was having trouble with the lock to my main door so gave a call since they are contracted with my building. Instead of sending someone over and charging a couple of hundred dollars, he called me back on FaceTime and helped trouble shoot it real time. We got the lock working again! DON'S POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE COULD HAVE LED TO A BREAK IN AND HARM DONE TO ME AND MY PROPERTY, WHICH HAD REQUIRED POLICE PRESENCE. I don't know what happened, but Don's used to be a great locksmith. But no more. I've lived in my house in Bernal Heights for about 15 years and have needed to call for emergency service a couple of times before when I have locked myself out of the house. They always came and provided great service, even at night. Not this time. I was having a HUGE drama that required me to call the police and immediately change the locks on my doors to prevent a threat of harm to myself and my property by someone who had a key to my house. I called Don's around 6pm and left a message. No one returned my call. I called Don's again around 10 pm and spoke to someone and left my phone numbers for the locksmith to call me back. Again no one called me back. I realize that these calls were placed to Don's after hours, but they are supposed to have 24 hour emergency service. If they were busy, they could have called me and set my expectation, but I got no call back whatsoever. They did not even call me back the next day. Luckily the threats that were made did not pan out and I actually didn't need to change my locks, but that does not justify that Don's did NOT come through for me in my desperate time of need (which required calling 911). I am really pissed at them for being so irresponsible. read more

Very rude with horrible customer service, especially the woman who dispatched locksmiths over the phone. Called them in the morning to get a door lock checked out that doesn't latch properly in our apartment building. They had to call me back. Two hours later, get a call from them, and explain the issue and all relevant information. Person says okay and they will come out today and check the door, since they serviced our building numerous times. Later in the evening, very rude woman calls and asks me what the problem is. So I explain to her the same exact thing I told the other employee. I ask her why I have to tell them the same information multiple times. Woman gets an attitude and cuts me off mid sentence, saying that they are doing us a favor to come check out the issue, and we should be grateful they are doing some thing nice, never answering my question. Then she puts me on hold for a minute. I ask her again why I need to explain myself multiple times, she responds "you don't even want to know my answer to that." I tel her then I don't want to use your services anymore. Avoid them at all costs read more

Up until now, I have come here multiple times to purchase locks and lock accessories for unique items that places like Home Depot and Lowes don't carry. Customer service and helpfulness is not a strong suit for at least some of the staff. One time, I had a very old electric strike I needed to have replaced because someone broke it. I took the old one to them, and they said it was discontinued. She said she would find the up to date model to replace this one, and get back to me. She never did get back to me. Now, I have found that Mario's Locksmith which is also on Mission. They are more friendly, helpful, and the best part of all, is that they are cheaper.
