Crab Stuffed shrimp was overdone/ burnt and the stuffing was not crab at all. It looked like turkey stuffing from Thanksgiving and did not taste like crab. Given the reviews appears to be kind of "polar" either real good or real bad I tried this place with some reservations. Bottom line is the the catfish was excellent and so were the shrimp. Horrible food, I think the dishwasher was cooking. Overly salty, oily, cold grilled corn, burnt cheese in a trio of undescribable slop of crayfish dishes. Coleslaw from a 5 gallon bucket in a dish that was maybe 4 ounces for 5 bucks. Green beans from a can heated in a microwave. Life long resident of Louisiana here. We used to go to Dons when I was a kid and can remember when Dons opened in Denham Springs. I haven't been to Dons in years. I did eat at the Dons in Hammond the other night, and the food was absolutely horrible. Everything taste premaid and microwaved. With all the great restaurants in Hammond I don't know how this place is still open. The service was good but Dons in Hammond charges a premium price for horrific food. Tope La, Cate street, jacumel, and many others serve farrrrrr better food in Hammond for the same price. Holy Moly! This place ROCKS! New favorite! First off, they have 2 for 1 Bloody Mary's, Margaritas, and draft beer, all day, everyday. Now, I thought this would mean that they are like $15 drinks, but no....we had 2 Bloodys and 2 Margs and the total was $15. 4 drinks for $15!?!? Ok!!! We ordered the Shrimp Dinner, which came with Shrimp Gumbo (it was KILLER!!), Stuffed Shrimp (which I usually don't like, but this one was really tasty), Fried Shrimp (decent), Jacked Up Shrimp (Yum!), Broiled Shrimp (kinda like a scampi), Shrimp Etoufee (delicious!), Shrimp Au Gratin (stupid good) and Don's Mashed (this is really a twice baked potato, and probably the best one I've ever had in my life. Why is a POTATO so good?!?!) This was a GREAT way to try a lot and find favorite. Everything in this sampler was stellar. Also, I'd like to comment on the table bread they give you. How? How is the BREAD in this area so damn good?!?! Here, they serve it with a small amount of butter drizzled on it and we ate two whole plates of it and used it to dip and sop up all the flavors. I also ordered 6 Chargrilled Oysters, which were SO FANTASTIC! No wonder they're known for them. The bread in these juices was to die for! We ate outside at Don's Seafood and had a lovely evening! Our waitress was attentive, kind, & on top of it. The seafood was wonderful! The Zydeco Shrimp appetizer was great! The gumbo was delicious and all the dishes we tried were top notch & absolutely delicious! We enjoyed being able to bring our dogs instead of leaving them in the hotel room. This was the perfect spot for us. We enjoyed the lighting and plants that gave a nice setting. We will be back when we are visiting that way again! read more

The last time I visited D.s. was Ring Day 1983, in the French Quarter. That day, the food was good, the service was fine, but as my sweet readers know, I always liked "the little guy" and "off the beaten track" ... non-corporate, etc. . .E-nuff ol'school. TODAY, However today we we happy under a breezy tent. Their food was warm, delicious and served graciously by all who helped. Also today was again, another milestone for me, usually at Jazzfest, Mister Juicy and my anniversary. We married in 2005 While driving through hammond. We happily spotted their big tent serving (8-big tops and 1-4 top) food. The day was delightful , but the service was so much better! Our server was great. I ordered the hamburger steak with gravy on the fries. They changed me an additional $3.50 for gravy that was room temperature. The hamburger steak was great. The all you can eat shrimp had no seasoning and were hard to peel. It took entirely too long for refills on the shrimp. Added a small link of sausage = $4.50. Don's Seafood has been around for as long as I can remember and started off the Cajun seafood craze. I would have to say that I personally think they can be given the credit for bring chain Cajun food restaurants outside of the Louisiana borders. Now don't go all historic on me and quote out some obscure fact otherwise....because to me Don's Seafood gets the credit "in my lifetime". We had the Fried shrimp with fries, and Half shrimp and half catfish entree, and Half shrimp and red beans and rice entree and all were delicious. Do start off with the Spinach crab dip which also was delicious. All our food was delicious and the only reason they don't get 5 stars was due to our server being a little forgetful and slow. This was my first time at Dons. I wanted to try some traditional Louisiana cuisine so Don's was our choice! We ordered the alligator, some Gumbo, hush puppies, boudin balls and char broiled oysters! I enjoyed everything except for the gumbo... it didn't taste "homemade" to me. We also ordered the two for one Bloody Mary's and the first one was really good but the second one was not so good (I know a different bartender made it because I was watching)... I guess for being my first time I would give it 3 stars because our waitress was very nice, the place was clean and they have a large alligator in the front (for photos) so it made the experience worth the visit! read more

And also an order of fried oysters. The Sammy should've been toasted for one. Also the shrimp were the smallest we've had since being here. Looked and tasted like cocktail shrimp. Not great. Then comes the gumbo. If you enjoy eating a salt block again with a coupe of baby shrimp then this is your place. Let the shrimp grow up to be tasty morsels. Not only were they baby shrimp, that's all that was in it. Thought it was a seafood gumbo. Every recipe I've seen that's a southern seafood gumbo looks like they toiled laboriously and put out an amazing product. It's to to to bad. We got this to go and won't be coming back. We've had some of the best po-boys of our lives in Louisiana. Not here though. Not even close.....and the fried oysters weren't fried all the way. Batter was runny..... not happy at all. First of all, have to mention Braylee, our server, She was attentive and sweet. Braylee helped us with our selections and had the answers to all of our questions. Don's is a staple of the Hammond food scene and it's easy to see why. I got the grilled salmon and it was tasty and perfectly cooked. My fiancé got the seafood platter and it tasted amazing and had plenty of food, honestly enough for two people. The cocktails were delicious and we had such an amazing experience here. We love the crab legs, which we usually get sautéed and are sometimes hit and miss, but tonight they were very good. The grits and shrimp is great and the fried shrimp is delicious.
