The food is delicious and the ambiance is great. The service is a little hit or miss. I've had both good and bad experiences. For a Louisiana Restaurant, they are authentic. We were in town for a softball camp at SLU. After a long, hot day on the field we found Don's on Yelp and came in for lunch. It is a beautiful restaurant with a great interior. Our server Bailey was absolutely fantastic. She was so nice and made us feel like family. She had great recommendations from the menu on what to order and really made the meal memorable. If you are in Hammond, definitely try Don's, just beware, the bread to start is delicious and has so much butter you may have to walk home afterwards, but it's worth it. The alligator bites were bite soft, the quesadillas with the avocado sauce was flavorful, both the raw and charbroiled oyesters were amaaazzinngg. Me and my husband went around 2:00ish and it wasn't crazy busy. Our waitress was kinda MIA but she was super sweet. Not pictured was the bread pudding my husband got (I'm not a fan of bread pudding so I didn't try it) but I did get the turtle cheesecake (fresh made daily btw) and it was the best cheesecake I've ever had even over Outback's cheesecake. $7 for a nice sized slice of cheesecake. This restaurant was recommended as the place to eat for seafood so we decided to try it even though my husband is not a fan of seafood. (He let me choose!) However he found a delicious sandwich choice which he enjoyed. But what really caught his eye was the white chocolate bread pudding which he said was delicious! We had 6 pounds of boiled crawfish, the crawfish ravioli, fried catfish with fries, the spinach seafood dip, salad, and the jacked up cheeseburger. Wow. Those jacked up oysters were incredible! A young lady at the bar told me to get them and I did. I had a nice cold beer with them. They also brought out some delicious buttered French bread. This place was a very pleasant surprise. I was able to get one of the last reservations available here on a Thursday, I pulled up the restaurant, and the parking lot was full; a great sign! I ordered charbroiled oysters and a crawfish boil with potatoes, corn and andouille sausage. The oysters were big, silky, garlicky, cheesy, salty and downright delicious! Being from Ohio, this was my first time eating Louisiana style crawfish, I typically eat Viet Cajun at home or when I'm on the road, and I really appreciate the Louisiana style. Simple, spicy, routed in tradition, but it still lets the crawfish speak for itself. I was lucky to visit Louisiana when the crawfish were in season and plump. Very disappointed in Don's seafood. For the money you pay, you should get better food and more of it. It was as if my fish came from the knock-off brand of frozen fish sticks. I could have done better on the crawfish etouffee by dumping a can of blue runner etouffee on my plate. The boudin balls even seemed different. I got this feeling that they went with cheap food but charged the same high price to make up for losses during these tough times. It showed in the portions and taste of the food. Wife had grilled stuffed shrimp and were ok but didn't finish. Good note...sweet hush puppies tasted really good. When we pulled up, there was a ton of cars in the parking lot, but surprisingly no wait time. The food was absolutely delicious. A little overpriced, but really tasty. The blackened redfish was delicious. It was not spicy at all - it just had a good flavor. The red beans and rice was delicious also.
