I have always received great service and food at Murphys. This has been a go to place for get together with my cousins and other members of my extended Italian family. They have a private dining room that will seat approximately 20 people. (This has to be reserved) When I found out they were retiring and closing the doors it was very sad . Went to dinner with family due to its location to an event at the local university. Waitress took almost ten minutes to take our drink order. Then another ten minutes to take entree order. The salad bar, which was highly touted on the menu and by the server was very much lackluster. The lettuce had brown edges, and the selection of items was not great. Gumbo was served without rice, or even a spoon. The hamburger is served on a poboy bun, which is fine...but one patty was overcooked and the other was extremely rare, which left a reddish tint to the fries and bottom of the bread. Family that had the grilled catfish and grilled tuna were happy with their dishes. This place needs to step it up on consistency. Had delivery and absolutely loved it! The shrimp Po' Boy was fantastic...soft bread, bigger shrimp, perfectly breaded with generous lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and pickles to add as desired. The mayo was light and could always use more shrimp but overall it is a terrific classic! The shrimp and crab gumbo needed no hot sauce or sprucing up of any kind, perfect flavor and consistency. Eh is really all I have to say to this place. Food was ok and the salad bar I added to my entree was fine but I do think it is a little overpriced. Me and my husband have passed this multiple times while dropping my brother off to southeastern so we stopped in this time. We were seated quickly and the server was really nice. It was the quality of the food that got me. We shared a seafood platter but if your really hungry that might not be enough for two to share. My husband tried the crab cake I think it was and I've never seen him get rid of something so fast before. He said it tasted freezer burnt and it was not good at all. Seafood should not taste freezer burnt especially in Louisiana. My drink tasted like juice more than anything which sucks but maybe the bartender may be the only issue with that. A nice family oriented seafood restaurant. You are treated with a friendly smile by the hostess and left in great hands with your server. You recieve prompt, courteous service from the get-go. Now it wasn't very busy or crowded at the time so, I couldn't tell you what kind of service you would get when the place is packed. It was myself, my wife and our daughter stopping in for lunch. We all started with the endless salad bar. Our daughter had the crawfish etouffee (and most Louisianans are very peculiar about their etouffee's) this had great flavor and tastes great. My brother is down from the frozen tundra. He wants to eat shrimp as much as possible when visiting. We decided to go to Murphy's as I had not been there before. We were greeted by the hostess. The restaurant was well lit. We were seated. Our waiter was very polite and took our drink order. We were there just before 5 pm. We had 4 in our party. My brother, SIL, and wife all order fried shrimp. I ordered shrimp and catfish. The shrimp were Gulf shrimp, nothing imported. The shrimp batter was crunchy just the way I like it. I've been going to Murphy's since the 80's. Has always been a good solid place to eat. However lately, the food and salad bar is lacking in quality and their entree's are becoming overpriced. We were there last weekend and for 4 guests it was over $200.00 dollars and that was with no alcohol. We drank water. Might just have to look for other places to eat. read more

Have eaten here a couple of times now, and have enjoyed it each time. Since my son is now attending SELU, this is our go to place for seafood in the Hammond area. The fried shrimp is probably some of the best that I have eaten. Lightly breaded and fried to perfection. The portions are big for what you pay for too. Also you can get the salad bar for a couple of dollars more and is great for what you pay for it. The service is always on spot, since keeping my glass full is important to me. Nice place, decor is nice, food fantastic. Great salad bar complete with marinated artichoke, pasta salad and potato salad top with homemade dressings. Ordered their "homemade" meatballs off appetizer menu and they were as advertised by our incredible waitress Kaitlin. Best meatballs ever! And then we ordered artichoke and crab soup. I have had soup and bisque all over the US and this is tops. Unbelievable consistency, taste, lots of crab meat and we had to have a second bowl. Seconds came with soup and salad. We just had an excellent experience at Murphy's Seafood as we were passing through. The bartender/waitress was absolutely amazing. The salad bar was to die for. I could have only gotten the salad bar, and been completely satisfied. Our fried seafood platter consisted of oysters, catfish, a crab cake, hush puppies, and french fries with excellent, homemade tartar and cocktail sauces. Prices were reasonable. $20 for the entire seafood platter which we split and had plenty left over, and only $4 to add the all-you-can-eat salad bar to an entree. my family and a couple friends went to Murphy's tonight after attending a wake. All I can say is very very disappointed. My wife and a friend of ours ordered the shrimp on bun I ordered a shrimp Poboy now let me just say I have eaten shrimp Poboys all over Louisiana and every one of them was running over with fried shrimp. Well that was not the case with the one I received at Murphy's I received a 8 inch piece of Poboy bun with 7 shrimp on it the bread was not even covered. I asked if there was a mistake with the sandwich. After asking the waitress she took the Poboy and the shrimp on bun that my wife had ordered witch only had 5 small shrimp on it to the kitchen to see why they only had a few shrimp on them. After a few minutes the owner came out with both of the sandwiches boxed up and he told me this is how they serve there shrimp sandwiches . My wife asked him why so few shrimp and he said that's just how they are.she said with only 5 small shrimp and with a attitude he said yes she do y'all actually count the shrimp. He said yes with a very unprofessional bad attitude. I'm not one to complain but this was the most ridiculous experience I have ever had at a restaurant. I went in for a to go order and ordered at the bar. At first everything went well. I later decided to add crab claws to my order and asked the woman behind the counter (didn't get her name bc no one had name tags on but I believe she was Hispanic with dyed blonde hair, black at roots). She tells me I don't take orders. Um ok I am a paying customer, can you maybe get someone who can take my order because that was useless information. And why were you behind the counter so long if not to assist. She literally was leaning on the counter the whole time. Went here tonight after my niece's graduation. We were seated after about 25 min. We ordered and it took an hour to get our food. I ordered the seafood combo catfish and shrimp. The shrimp were very small and the hush puppies were small and seemed like the kind you get from the frozen section at the supermarket. My wife ordered the seafood platter but ordered all shrimp because she loves shrimp. They brought her the wrong order. When they finally brought her plate out it was just a small order of shrimp. Don't understand how this place got such high reviews. I guess I'm just spoiled by seafood restaurants like The Chimes and Parrain's. Murphy's Seafood has a plain, but nice, neat, & clean exterior and interior. It could be described as cozy and somewhat upscale. I ordered the Seafood Platter ($20.00), which came with a side of baked potato (but, other choices, like broccoli, were offered as well), along with an outstanding crab cake (loaded with big chunks of crab meat), big strips of catfish, fairly large and succulent fried shrimp, and tiny oysters (this is a bad year for oysters). The baked potato was big. The seafood batter was light tasting and not greasy. Overall, this is as good a seafood restaurant as any other in southeastern Louisiana. I highly recommend it. We are in Louisiana for the weekend and have been hitting different seafood restaurants between Breaux Bridge and Hammond since our part of Texas (DFW) doesn't have a lot of good ones. We're really glad we gave Murphy's a try tonight. If you're like us, atmosphere and service are something we care about as much, or more, than the food. We had fried catfish, fried shrimp, french fries and hush puppies, with a piece of pecan pie to go. The food was really good, and piled high on the plate, but the service was above and beyond. There was a party of @ 30 in part of the restaurant, so we were told it would be a wait considering all of their orders had just gone in. Not a problem, we sat and talked. Our waitress, Emma, came quickly to get our drink orders filled and checked with us frequently until we finally decided what we wanted. All of the wait staff was helping serve the large party, but they were hopping like crazy making sure the rest of the customers were also taken care of. Philip, the owner, came to talk with us multiple times and gave us suggestions of activities not too far away. It was apparent that he cares about his customers AND staff. Every person that walked through the door got a special greeting (even hugs for some), while he was also serving food, bussing tables and helping his staff however he could...all of them with smiles on their faces. I'm 70 years old. I've been eating at Murphy's off and on since I was in college. Back then the food was outstanding with the first generation Murphy's. The restaurant was in an old wooden building. Business was booming so the Murphy's built the restaurant they are in now. Eventually the son of Mr. and Mrs. Murphy took over the business. The food was still good but portions got smaller. No big deal. Now I think the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Murphy has been running the restaurant for the past few years and I heard he went to culinary school. In last few years I have noticed a decline in food quality and more emphasis on profit. Today I gave Murphys another try. The salad was fresh and tasted good. The fried eggplant appetizer with tomato sauce was good. NOW......the fried catfish topped with crawfish etouffee sauce(catfish Diane) was NASTY. The sauce instead if being pink with pink crawfish was dark brown and the crawfish were dark brown almost black. After a few bites I figured what the nasty taste was. They used leftover crawfish from a crawfish boil which had the taste of boiled crawfish Ingredients. I'm not a chef but leftover boiled crawfish from a crawfish boil do not belong in etouffee sauce. The crawfish were over cooked and mushy. The catfish fillets were tiny. Also, after other customers finished their meal and were leaving I noticed a lot of food left on their plates.
