WOW! This place is always on point and truly the very best BBQ on the Northshore, which I don't say lightly. Having lived in Austin and being obsessed with BBQ I'd call myself a little bit of a BBQ perfectionist. Anyone who has done it themselves knows to get it right you can't rush it, takes good prep, cooking process, and resting/proper finishing. Salty Joe's is more of a restaurant that has BBQ than it is a BBQ restaurant. Nothing wrong with that just an observation based on their huge menu. My buddy and I stopped in here one Saturday for lunch and decided to split an order of Philly cheesesteak eggrolls and a sampler platter. The eggrolls were solid and came with a cheese dipping sauce. There were 3 of these that were cut in half so really enough for 3-4 people to get a taste. The sampler platter came with ribs, brisket, and pulled pork with 2 sides. We got the beans and corn pudding. The corn pudding is a misnomer as this is really cornbread. Still good though. The meats were all pretty good with the brisket being better than I expected. Their sauces were not my favorite. I think one had some sort of blackberry flavor, but I could have that wrong. Server started off bringing incorrect appetizer without apology( small instead of large we ordered) took 20 minutes to take main order. Took another 20 to get refills. Had to ask twice for drink refills. Got another order wrong- not as ordered. I could go on. When bill came, it was vastly overpriced. I had dinner here last Friday night while in town as Yelp gives it high marks and I like good Q. When we arrived I immediately noticed all of the cars parked outside and it looked very busy. After walking inside, I noticed that this is actually a large restaurant inside with 3 large rooms along with covered outdoor seating. They had a 3 piece band playing for entertainment and while Salty Joe's wasn't full there was a nice sized crowd inside enjoying themselves. The interior is well decorated in a folksy country way with plenty of TV's available for viewing. They also have a full bar. I ordered the smoked chicken meal with two sides for $15 and had them add a slice of brisket for another $4 to try. The food arrived less than 15 minutes later. The chicken had a nice tasting rub and was juicy and flavorful. It was very good. My chosen side dishes were baked beans and corn pudding. The beans were served in a cup and while tasty were very soupy. I wouldn't call them baked beans. The corn pudding was basically a very moist square of corn bread with corn kernels inside. It was good too but not what I expected. This meal was enjoyable and while I might try two other sides next time the meal represented excellent value for the price. The brisket was a disappointment. Not much flavor or bark as I needed some of their sauce to improve it. I probably wouldn't order brisket next time. I will give a 4 score here because it's an attractive and popular restaurant and my chicken was very good, the sides acceptable and our table service very good. This was my third time at Salty Joes and it was average as I remember the last two times being. The brisket was on the dry side and lacked the flavor I expect from a bbq restaurant in this process range as it's not cheap to eat here. The pulled pork was good, but not great. The beans were very good and potato salad was not the kind of potato salad I prefer as it had too much mayonnaise and maybe sour cream. Service was intensive, but the kitchen was slow. I have given this restaurant the 3 strike rule. Please save yourself a waste of time and a disappointing service. They may have live bands and a nice atmosphere, but the food is garbage and low quality. To the point that I needed to spend most of my last trip in the bathroom. This is close to a public safety issue. But the service is slow and non responsive also. I asked for a drink menu then waited 20 minutes to order a drink before going to the bar myself to order a drink. Once that drink was gone, my waiter was surprised that I had a drink at all. We last dined at Salty Joe's in February 2025. Because the portions for our appetizer and my rice & beans were demonstrably smaller than our previous visits, I asked to speak to a manager. A young ma then presented himself. When I questioned the size of the portions, he insulted my intelligence by saying they had "alway" been that size. When I refused to except his expanation, he then told us to "leave the restaurant." I told him if we were forced to leave, I would not pay the bill. After a few more unpleasant exchanges, he left our table. We were great fans of Salty Joe. s until this unpleasant and unnecessary experience. Lee offered to move tables prior to setting down the salads. While there were a couple of things delayed in delivery eventually everything made it to the table. This place is nestled in the middle of a bunch of homes or like an open-ended subdivision. Loved the atmosphere and vibe of this place. Great service, great layout and they had live music playing. Our food was sub-par. We got 3 little ribs that looked like they came from a bird. However, they were very tender. 2 slices of brisket which was ok and the pulled pork which was a little dry. I felt the mac and cheese could have been creamier and maybe a smoker flavor. The baked beans were good and the green beans were a little bland. We will try something different next time. I ordered a brisket platter for $20ish and added pork belly for another $6, they gave me 2 pieces of pork belly when it is supposed to be 4 pieces! the side salad is half the size and loaded baked potato half the size! We ordered food here tonight on Waitr and the food arrived raw! Now I understand that a business can get busy- but NEVER should I receive RAW FOOD if I paid $60 something dollars for it! Via Waitr, we ordered the smoked platter with boudin balls, baked beans, potato salad, two corn puddings, and a brownie a la mode. To start: the smoked platter was thrown together like nobody in the kitchen liked their job. The brisket was ALL FAT, the pulled pork was subpar- but the piéce dé resistânce was the RAW ST. LOUIS RIBS. Like who in their right mind wants to eat meat straight out the slaughterhouse! Not I or my family! The sides were decent- small but decent. You would think this would be enough food to split among a small family, but due to the raw ribs, and undercooked pulled pork, we declined to provide to our children. The corn pudding, boudin balls, and the brownie was the best part of the meal, which isn't saying much because that didn't feed anyone other than wet the palate. As sad as it is, have to update this review and drop it to 1 Star. We ordered take out around the beginning of the year and something about the taste of the food was off. We went here for the 4th of July and it was not good. At all! Thought it was because of perhaps a high volume of food being prepared. Decided to give it another try. This was a bad decision. I got pulled pork, beans and potato salad. The pork was okay, the potato salad literally had no taste. It was like eating large chunks of boiled potatoes. The beans also has no taste, were not cooked enough, and appears as if water had been added to them in an attempt to cook them more. Which made them watery and again tasteless. I couldn't eat them. I was throughly disappointed. I have decided that I will no longer waste money or time going here to eat. 3 strikes is enough for me. I'm hope they find and fix the problems, because this really was a great place to eat. read more

This is one of our absolutely favorite restaurants. We love all the space. It's perfect for groups or if you have kids with you. The decor is really fun and they have a great outdoor patio and an awesome bar. My kids love to play with the blocks in the back on the train car. They have really good food and really good beer.. they also have a ton of options. We went the day before Mother's Day, and it wasn't too crowded and they took really great care of us.
