DO NOT - I REPEAT - DO NOT USE THIS TREE COMPANY!!! To say that my experience with this company was a nightmare is an understatement! I originally scheduled a tree trimming service for Dec and was contacted a few days before the Thanksgiving holiday and was asked if I'd like to reschedule the tree trimming service to the day before Thanksgiving since they had an opening. I reluctantly agreed, since I had guests coming the day after Thanksgiving, but was reassured twice that everything would be done and cleaned up that day. I came home at 3:30 that afternoon of the service to find a big heaping pile of wood, leaves, and branches in my driveway and all over the street (I couldn't even park in my garage). Back yard was a mess and one of the cable lines running diagonal across the yard had been accidentally cut (which btw no one bothered to tell me... I had to bring it up when I saw the lines hanging down). The three guys working on the trees in the back (apparently 3rd party contractors) were packing up and getting ready to leave. I asked them who was going to clean up all the mess and they, being disgruntled, told me that the guy who works for Don's Tree Service would have to do it since he had only just showed up at noon when they were there at 8am sharp to complete the job by that afternoon. That guy apparently had left to put gas in the chipper and fix a flat tire after only a few hours of work (Like what? Shouldn't that have been taken care of BEFORE a scheduled job??). So the 3 workers left and I waited and waited as the sun went down and realized that there was no way this 'clean up' work was going to get done that day. NOTE, after my landlord and I attempted contacting the receptionist AND the owner several times about the situation, no one returned our messages. Finally, a little after 6pm, I received a knock at my door.. it was the guy who had been gone for over 3 hours saying he would get the clean up work done that evening. He left AGAIN and came back a half hour later with his chipper and blower and, you guessed it, began working his loud chipper and blower through the night until 9pm!!!!! What a complete embarrassment. He came with only a handheld light and couldn't see anything (which is a safety hazard working dangerous equipment in complete darkness). My neighbor felt so bad for him he came out with his standup construction lamp and started helping him load logs onto his truck. After all those hours working in the yard, I was still left with a big pile of leaves and wood chips on the street in the front of my house and a complete and utter mess in the back of house where all of the leaves had been shoved towards the back of my yard. I was LIVID. Still no word at all from the owner on Thanksgiving (the day after the service) and by Friday morning I was sent a text (only a text) from the receptionist asking if I needed someone to come back to clean up the yard. WTH? I picked up the phone and called her and basically explained I was not happy to that point, I had company now arriving that afternoon and wanted someone out that morning to clean up the mess and that I didn't want that same guy coming back. What happens? The same guy arrives, not that morning, but at 3:30pm with two other guys to clean up. When I looked out my window, I see one of the guys light up a bong in my front yard. I was so pissed off at this point I went outside and told him to leave my property immediately! After going back and forth with the receptionist a few times, I was informed that the owner was explained what transpired and yet he still hadn't made it a priority to ensure all was taken care of that morning. This company obviously doesn't mind employing individuals with drug addictions, nor do they care to retain loyal customers. My landlord has been using them for years for all of his properties, including his own. Come to find out, he STILL overcharged my landlord for this terrible service despite promising a discount given the situation. I will NEVER recommend this company to anyone and my landlord will no longer be using them. read more

I wish I'd read Mary D's review before I wasted so much time with these people! Instead, I had the same thing happen to me! They gave me a bid, I signed it, and we set up a time. They were a no-show -- their truck had broken down. Fine. So, we set up a second appointment (which meant my taking a SECOND afternoon off work). I waited around while they finished work on a neighbor's tree (during my time slot) and then they told me, "We can't do your job for the price we quoted. We won't make any money on it." They wrote up another bid that was about 20% higher. Their strategy is to wear you out so you will give in to the higher price. That's plain greedy and rude (and I almost fell for it). read more

Don's Tree Service - Scheduled 3/24/14 at 8:00am, they were right on time. A five man crew was there to do a pretty big job, remove a very large pine tree and trim a couple of others. They were great. It appeared Robert was running the show and David was the one that tackled the large pine tree. They were courteous, friendly and did a great job in all aspects of the scope of work needed. They drove away right before 3:00pm and the area was clean of all debris from the removal and trimmings. Would recommend them and will be hiring them again in the future when needed. Thanks to the entire crew!!! read more

Don't bother calling these guys. Got a quote and set up an appointment! Very relieved to have work set up. (This was not the lowest bid.) Crew showed up a little late, but no problem. Crew leader, Robert, looked at the task and said, "We can't do this job for the price we quoted. We won't make any money on it." With no preamble, the entire crew loaded up and left. No offer to mitigate situation, no answer to our phone calls and still waiting to hear from someone. Not sure if it's a bait and switch to get customers to pay more or they simply sent an incompetent appraiser in the first place. Regardless, unprofessional management of the situation and it left us in the lurch. I wouldn't give them another opportunity to do it to someone else. read more

I had Don's trim my huge, overgrown Japanese maple and tall crepe myrtle, and remove two magnolias from my back garden. Don's returned my calls in a timely way, got me an estimate almost immediately (and it was $175 less than the other estimate I got) and were able to see to the job the next day from when I told him I wanted them to do the work. All of the work was done in one day, and the garden was left as clean as possible. Amazing to come home from work to find all of it completed! I was very pleased with the service and price and would recommend them to anyone! read more

Please read!!!! To begin, the older man that came to do our consult was very sweet. We booked our appt a month in advance due to our busy schedule. On our appt day 3 men rolled up in older pick up trucks. They were nice for the most part, but I need to mention that one had a swastika tattoo on his hand and the other sat down in one of our lawn chairs to have a smoke. After I walked them around the yard explaining what I wanted done he proceeded to tell me his chipper broke a day or two ago....so he basically couldn't do the job that day! I wanted to say, "why didn't you call me to reschedule?", and "why are you even here?!?!" He said another crew could bring their chipper, or that they could leave the debris in the street, but overall it was going to take longer and be much more difficult. Did I mention you are charged by the hour?!?! I told them they could leave and I would reschedule(unlikely). One of the men told me the older man John would call me for a new appt. That was two weeks ago. I'm fuming just thinking about my experience. Just think twice before using this company. read more

I called Don's to get my large maple tree trimmed. The arborist came out to give me an estimate. He was great. Extremely knowledgable, friendly and I feel like if I had taken them up on their offer, they probably would have done a great job. But they quoted 1100 dollars for a job someone else quoted me 300 for. I went with the 300 dollar guys and was 90% satisfied. I'm sure Don's would have cleaned up after themselves a little better, but for 800 dollars saved I'll happily pick up a couple branches and sweep my own patio. Either way, I'm sure Don's is as good as it gets, but it is worth shopping around if you would like to save (quite a lot of) money. read more

Don's came out this morning to remove some dead branches. As a result of receiving such great customer service from Don's 2 years ago, I falsely expected to have a similar experience this time as well. However not at all the case. Scott & his crew came out and he was very rude and spoke down to me - to the amusement of his crew. He was completely unprofessional & I'm very surprised a crew leader would conduct himself this way. The difference between my 2 experiences with Don's was night & day unfortunately. So if customer service is important to you, I would avoid having Scott & his crew perform the work. read more

These guys did an OK job but then they left some cut wood telling me the neighbor would come take it. The neighbor took most of it but left some. I called Don's to remove the debris but no one responded. Now the neighbors are angry with me. I am not in a position to remove it myself and am at a loss. read more

We are still waiting for Dons Tree Service to complete the terms of the agreement specified in the contract they negotiated. It has now been 2.5 months since we first contacted them. The operations manager informed us we did not HAVE a contract with this company and referred us to the Better Business Bureau mediator! Even their employees said they can't keep up now that they are listed on Angie's List - which is the NEXT place I'm contacting about their SHODDY work, horrible work ethic and deplorable customer service! read more

Completely unreliable! Scheduled my to have some trees trimmed for 1:00-3:00 pm, called at 10:30 am the day the work was to be done to confirm, assured they would be there and probably be early. 2:45 pm no show, called and told the guy mixed up appointments but would be there in a 1/2 hour. 2.5 hours later (5:30 pm) a guy shows up said he was late because a truck broke down. I see from other comments that this is a common theme. Will never use this company again! read more

They (Dan) came for the tree consultation on time, listened to what I wanted, and proposed what should be cut. He also made a very helpful and cost-saving suggestion about another tree I was having a problem with. I agreed to the quote and the office called later that evening to set up the job. We set a date and time. They came approximately 45 min.s early, they cut exactly what we had agreed upon and in less than an hour, and they cleaned up after themselves. I will DEFINITELY use them again when I need another tree pruned. read more

I really liked that after the work was completed the office called me to follow up, and be sure the job had been completed to my satisfaction. Good service. The quote was done by the owner. He was honest and really not pushy. Very clear that we didn't need to do everything at once (just bought a house with a ton of huge trees) and should let our budget guide us. What a refreshing guy. The other quote we got was a total used car salesman approach that sucked. Don's felt more genuine. The guys came today - decided to pay for a full day at an hourly rate. I paid for a 3 man crew and got a 4 man crew and they got everything done and still had time to do some trees I had though I'd have to leave till next year. They did excellent clean up too. If there was any caveat I'd say just to keep in mind that when the crew arrives they will do whatever you say so be sure what you want. I had requested something that ended up not looking totally amazing and I think the crew were too polite to advise me otherwise. So I guess in a perfect world someone could have said "hey lady, bad idea." Really a small thing though. I got what I asked for! :) read more

Don's Tree sent Bruce out to give me an estimate. He was friendly, respectful, and not pushy at all. Some tree people are. Before the crew came out to grind a few stumps, I noticed some that weren't on the estimate. I called and they said tell the crew when they arrive, and they'll maybe charge a few dollars extra for each stump. I was running late that day, and I got there right after the crew had left so I wasn't able to ask them to grind these. Well, I called Don's back, and these guys came back, and ground the stumps for no additional charge!! Maybe it was because one of them was close to the house and the gutter pipe got dented (minor cosmetic issue), don't know. Great service and very friendly and not creepy! read more

I scheduled a tree trimming session for mistletoe removal on 2/22/13. I had an afternoon appointment, so I figured when I finished at work at 3pm, I would see the crew hard at work. I was wrong! I have two 30-foot Chinese Tallow trees that were in need of some pruning. After Don's Tree Service came out and gave me a very fair estimate, it was a no-brainer to have them do the work. My wife and I recently purchased a home that had a number of trees and we were uncertain of what they were, let alone the health of them. We called Don's Tree Service and Jon came out and gave us an estimate for cleaning up our trees as well as removing one that we aren't looking forward to keeping. Jon, one of the company's arborists, also took the time to inform us about what type of trees we had on our property and went over the health of them. Due to the neglect in the back yard we only hired Don's to bring the backyard into a manageable state. They brought a team of 6 guys and took care of our 4 amber maples, 1 magnolia, 1 sycamore, and removed a dead bush we hadn't thought of asking about originally. They even cleaned up a heaping pile of yard waste that we had lying around because we didn't have room in our yard waste bin (we have 2 that have been filled to the brim the day it is taken away). They were able to fill their truck in about 5 hours and we are OVERLY happy with how much better things look. We highly recommend Don's for their service. The cash only thing is the only issue I see with this company, but Jon did mention that they have payment plans available if needed. read more

Don's Tree Service did a great job! I saw them working at a home in our neighborhood & stopped to get a card. I had several companies come out and bid on the job, which included trimming (taming!) 8 trees and grinding 2 stumps. Not only were they the best priced, but they had the best time estimate for the job. Even though I had to wait 7 weeks for the scheduled date, my yard is seeing the light of day it hasn't seen in many years! I contracted Don's to trim a Mulberry and 3 large palm trees in my front yard. They were pretty flexible with scheduling and did a great job on the trees. They were also the most competitively priced. I'll definitely recommend and use their services in the future. read more

I contacted the business through the Yelp app on a Sunday afternoon and received a response the following Tuesday letting me know they could come out on Friday between 2-4 to remove a stump in the front yard. I was very pleased with the appointment time and confirmed. Friday when I arrived home the tree stump was still there and I contacted the business through the Yelp app. I received a voice mail a little while later from Diane apologizing because she thought the stump was in the backyard. Since it was in the front the stump had to be marked and another company had to come out to check for underground utilities before the stump could be removed. It was an easy mistake to make and another appointment was set for Monday morning. I Yelped my concerns that the tree wasn't marked by late Friday night and asked if this would be a problem for Monday. No response. Monday morning came and went. No marks were made on the stump. In the end the work was completed on Wednesday afternoon. I had to initiate every call when the appointment time was not kept. On the day the work was completed it was about 6 hours after the agreed upon time. I was told in the very beginning it was $125 per hour but I would receive a call before the work was started and be given a flat rate or an approximation of how long it would take to remove the stump. No phone call. An invoice was left for the amount of $150. The person arrived a little after 4:00 and left about 4:50. It took less than an hour but the invoice is for more than an hour of work? I don't understand the lack of good customer service and common courtesy. A phone call or message to let me know why the appointments kept getting pushed back and an apology for every time I had to call or message would have been a nice gesture. So unless you have the patience of a saint and care less about customer service or common courtesy give them a call but I will look elsewhere for future tree services. read more

How can I say you probably won't find a better deal out there. I called for an estimate, Jon came out right away. We agreed upon a price and he threw in a discount for my small kids. Got on the schedule, the guys were right on time on schedule. They were in and out doing their job. They cleaned up behind themselves. Every man on the crew was extremely professional. They removed a large pine tree, 24 inches at the base that was leaning over our swimming pool. They tarped the pool and took every precaution not to drop cuttings in the pool. They sectioned the tree down and took it away. Their stump grinding crew was very professional, cleaned up after themselves as well. You bet they will be doing more work for me. read more

We have lived with a nearly dying Modesto Ash tree in our front yard for many years. It is just a few inches beyond the point where the County would be responsible for removing it and we are a middle class family with 15+ year old cars and not much extra money. So when our neighbor decided she wanted to remove her trees we thought it a great opportunity to bundle and maybe be able to afford to have the tree removed. We both obtained bids from Don's Tree Service, the bid billed my single tree removal at $100 more (per tree) than my neighbors. When I called to ask about the discrepancy the individual in the office could not explain why the trees, shown in both bids as measuring the same, were bid so differently. She offered to match the bid on my neighbor's tree and we agreed to that number. When the crew had completely removed by neighbors two trees, they knocked on my door to explain that our tree was twice the size as the neighbors and they could not honor their bid as they 'would not make any money.' Could someone have called me after the office person extended the discount and explained that in advance? I guess not. The crew did not offer an explanation just told me 'you are a stupid little missy' if I thought the trees, now gone so there could be no comparison, were the same size. I challenged them and they removed one branch, but then said that there were ants in the tree and they could not continue. I was not able to stand up to four strong men wielding chain saws, so they drove away. I attempted multiple times to contact the owner. When, the next day, he finally answered the phone I was told they had no intention of honoring their bid and would not return. He was not courteous, nor was he apologetic for the behavior of his crew. So now, the dead tree still sits in our front yard and I am left, emotionally bullied by a dishonest company. FYI - when I asked the opinion of a few other neighbors, all thought our tree to be about the same size as the neighbors. If you want to be bullied and treated disrespectfully, then this is the company for you. If you expect honesty or courtesy, I would steer clear of Don's Tree Service. My time is just as valuable as yours! Based on the Yelp reviews I called to set up an appointment for Kevin come out and give me a tree pruning estimate. Although the receptionist should improve her customer service skills.........I let that pass and decided to go with the scheduled appointment. I was given a two hour window.....on the day of scheduled appointment two hours and ten minutes go by and no Kevin or phone call. I called the office and spoke to a different and friendlier receptionist from, I explained my reason for calling and she placed me on hold for a minute. She tells me I am on the schedule and tells me she will call Kevin to find out his ETA. I told her not to bother......if Kevin is late for an initial appointment it is representative of his actual work (shotty). Two minutes later I get a call from Kevin to let me know he was running late. Perhaps had he or his office had made the call at least if minutes earlier they would not have lost my business and would not be getting this review. There are too many tree service companies around to go with a company that is so arrogant that will keep clients waiting. read more

Called for a quote on getting a brush pile chipped, was told that for chipping they schedule an appt to give a bid and if the amount is ok, then they do it right then. Wonderful. She asked if I knew the approx size of the pile, i said a rough guess was 20x8. She said ok, should be about $50-$75. Honestly if they had arrived and said it would be $150 (double) that would have been perfectly fine. Made an appt for monday during a 2 hr slot for the GUYS to come, I emphasize guys because she said it multiple times, which would imply more then one person. They, wait I mean he, 1, very small older man came during the time that was scheduled. Looked at the pile and instantly said "oh I didn't know it was this big, I'll need another guy and we won't be able to do it today". Uh no s***, I could've told you it was a two person job, but fine, so i asked when they could come. Hemed and hawed but never gave an answer, only that "oh and it will be $125 per hr" ok how long do you think it will take? "2, actually probably 3" he kept ephasizing the hrly rate. Then had the nerve to say "yea some people have it stacked up all nicely which makes it a lot easier". ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? It was obvious he didn't want to do the job, but good grief don't waste my time and schedule an appt 3 days prior. After he left i took a tape measure out and it ended up measuring 30x8, larger yes, but enough to warrant jumping from $50-$75 to $375? I don't think so. Screw this place, if you don't know how many guys you'll need for a min of a 20x8 pile then you can't be a serious company. read more

Don's tree service was my third bid to have a giant rotting apricot tree removed. This job was tricky as the tree was in the corner of my back yard, with much overhang into three neighbors yards. I asked for a quote with and without stump removal. I went for without stump removal as the price couldn't be beat! The quote was only $175, which saved me $175 from the next lowest bid! I also asked for an estimate on another fruit tree + palm tree frond trim. The job was completed for the quoted price of $475 with no problems while I was at work. The price was very good and the bill was left at my door. Ok to mail them a check! Good work! read more

After reading the reviews on yelp, we decided to call Don's Tree Service. They were so fabulous. They called when they said they would. They showed up right on time. They trimmed everything perfect. I called Don's and had someone come out to give me a quote. Dan came out the next day. He was very knowledgable and pleasant to talk with. He advised me on what was best for my big oak trees in the backyard. He quoted me on thinning out the trees, removing a big Italian Alder and flush cutting a stump in the front yard. The quote was reasonable so we went ahead with the work. The guys that showed up were pleasant and went right to work Kevin (supervisor) was a good guy and was very helpful in explaining everything they were doing. The work spoke for itself. The trees look great and the backyard is as clean as when they got there. They moved things and put them back in the same spots when they were done. Totally unprofessional! This past winter, it took me 7 weeks trying to book a tree removal. I had to call 7 times to get a date scheduled because it is impossible to get through to someone in their office. Then they rescheduled the day of the job, then they were a no show on the rescheduled date, then we rescheduled again and the guys showed up very late and reeking of marijuana with burritos in their hands. Then they decided they didn't want to do the job and left without telling me. All this a week before we were supposed to break ground on a construction project that required the tree be gone. And I was 8 months pregnant. Consider this your fair warning... read more
