Bait and switch? I contacted Don's based on the excellent Yelp reviews to trim a large oak tree. They came out the next day to provide an estimate (I wasn't there, but they said they didn't need me to be). The quote was very good and I scheduled the work (the first available slot was three weeks later). The workers arrived on time and were polite, but they told me that the time allotted was only enough to trim the part of the tree over my yard (the tree is in my yard but leans over the neighbor's). I had asked for an estimate to trim the whole tree, and the sheet with the estimate implied the same. When the worker contacted the boss, he confirmed that the estimate was for only part of the tree. The revised estimate was 3 times the original. :( I'm back to square on looking for estimates. If I end up with Don's I'll revise the review read more

we hired don's to cut down three trees in our backyard. jon--a very nice man and the dad i think--came over and gave me a straightforward written price quote. the quote turned out to be most-reasonable among the reputable, bonded & licensed firms i contacted so we went with them. they were scheduled to start work at 8am on a saturday morning and the work crew arrived at 8:00 a.m. ON THE DOT! three workers climbed out and, after exchanging a few pleasantries, got right to work. i really appreciated the fact that the foreman knocked on the door to confirm the third tree to be taken down since a few years back, my neighbor's tree service cut down OUR tree by mistake. anyway, they worked quickly and efficiently and, when they were done, the totally cleaned up after themselves. in fact, the yard, driveway and street in front our house was cleaner than when they arrived! highly recommended. read more

I just drove down from Nevada City to Sac to be here for my girlfriends tree trimming appointment in the morning. The receptionist canceled on my girl 4 times and had her crew show up when not scheduled, and we had to constantly rework our schedules so I made a point of being here- And now the owner just called which is the night before appointment and said that he just came by the house to put cones out (they never did this before- weird) and unapologetically said they werent going to cut the tree as it was too big and they dont have experienced guys to cut it? What?!!! Thats like making reservations at a restaurant and they dont have a chef?!!! My girl gave good reviews on here in the past because the crew did a fine job and these guys always cut her tree?!! Dont know whats going on with this business these days but the latest reviews say it all. FYI- the receptionist also sent a text (unprofessional) and used the excuse that their truck broke down as the reason for cancelling the last time which seems to be a common complaint on here. Don's Tree Service were dependable and competent. We had two 70 foot redwoods removed. The trees were located three feet from a swimming pool and near several plants. They removed the trees and ground the stumps. Be warned when you remove very large trees with any sort of wind, you will have flying sawdust. I saw the reviews on yelp and decided to call them. The owner came out and gave me a quote and was very nice. "The quote was the best price out o four quotes that I had received. I then scheduled an appointment. The only bad thing was that it was five weeks away as they are very busy. The team of Les,Jake and Randy showed up on time early in the morning and went over everything with me before they started. They cut eight trees in my backyard and cleaned up afterward. They were done in less than three hours. They went over it with me afterward to make sure everything was ok. The backyard looks so much better now. I would recommend them to anybody. read more

I would highly recommend this company. Two years ago they came out to look at my trees and gave me wonderful tips ( and a handout) as to how to keep my trees healthy in the drought. Just goodwill re tree without an expectation of a job as my trees were fine then . The fertilizer recommended made my trees much healthier during the drought re annual obnoxious bugs which were yucky but didn't hurt the trees each year. I appreciated Prompt service when calling and confirming and scheduling my tree trimming job this year after the heavy rains and downed trees. They came out today with rain on and off and did a superb job! More importantly, I really liked the quote which was specific to the trees and work done. I needed a huge tree gone in my back yard. However when I called they refused me service because I'm in North Highlands. I literally am 2 houses out of their "coverage" zone.. Really? I am writing this for my mother, who lives in Carmichael, so these are her words. "I have been a customer since 2004 and until October 2018 I was satisfied with their service. I decided I wanted a tree pulled out and of course called them first. On October 9, John came out to give me a quote. He was not at all happy that I only had one large bush to remove. He quoted me $225 and I asked why that was when they had recently removed two others for $300, and he told me it was because of the long drive to get to my home. He agreed to reduce the charge to $200, which worked for me. Diane from the office called to confirm that they would be out on October 27 and the window time was 1pm - 3pm. She called that day to say there was a problem getting here but they would be out and if they were not they would call. She called back to say they were not coming but would be there Monday Oct 29th at noon. I cancelled an appointment that day for this change. That day, they simply did not show up. I called at 1:40pm and got voicemail so I left a message asking where they were. No response. I called again and again got voicemail and asked for a reply if they were coming or not. They never called back or showed up. I called again on the Tuesday and said I was baffled that they didn't even have the manners to call me back. I never heard a word again. I will never use this service again and it is a shame because they did good work apparently when I was worth it to them. A simple call to me would have been free, easy, and would have helped to retain me as a customer. If I could leave zero stars for courtesy and customer relations, I would." read more

I always check yelp for advice. While I have used other arborists in the past, I needed a second opinion from a certified arborist and the reviews on yelp for Don's were very high. I called the phone number listed and got the answering service who told me that they don't do estimates and that the arborist is usually pretty busy. I told her that, well in fact that was why I was calling to get an estimate that may lead to a job. she told me well I don't know anything about that. I asked if they were employed by Don's and she said that she answers their phones. I would urge the owners to either A) script the answering service better or just use voicemail. We wanted our 2 45ft Liquid Ambers removed so we started getting quotes from licensed tree services. We received 4 quotes, which included other local companies and Dons was the best. I wasn't happy with my last experience. i asked them to thin out some of the branches of my tree and cut back a branch over the driveway. instead of thinning branches they completely chopped off limbs and when i asked why they did not cut back the limb over the driveway the gruff guy who was in charge said they had already been here too long. About six months later the city arborist came out because of a sidewalk repair- they make sure that tree roots are not cut that need to be there for the health of the tree. i asked him about the health of the tree. he said they should have never chopped off branches- they should just trim every other small branch. maybe they have a certified arborist on staff but that is not who came out to my house. there was the gruff guy and some younger guys in their 20s. It really sickened me to see my tree so butchered. i will never use Dons again and i will make sure that the company i use will have a certified arborist who actually performs the work. read more

Don made an appt. with us the same day and quoted us a very reasonable rate to remove 3 trees that were making a mess in our pool. Don's Tree service more than met my expectations. I had three estimates to remove some palm trees that overhung my pool. Don's tree service asked for half of what the other ones wanted. Their crew came on time, and cleared the trees without a problem. They did a great job cleaning up and were done in about two hours. Ha! Like others, I was lured by the promise of excellent customer service and a job well done. Maybe this would have been the case...had they shown up for the scheduled work. The appointment was set for the crew to arrive between 1-3 pm and confirmed the day before. I took the afternoon off work and was home by 12:30 pm. At 3:30, when no one had arrived, I called the office. After I said my name, it was 'oh yes, the crew got there early and tried to contact you but the dogs barked'. Um, there weren't any missed calls or messages on my phone and the appointment was 1-3 pm! And no one from the office calls to let me know?! I asked if they were coming to complete services and I was told we could reschedule....I think NOT. I will be going with someone else. read more

I had Don's Tree Service out today to trim 2 VERY large trees (a sycamore and a zalcova). They did a great job. They trimmed all of the mistletoe that was in one of the trees and lightened them both up considerably. They were here for 6 hours and cleaned everything up very well (swept and blew leaves off of deck, cleaned branches off of trellis, raked the yard). I have no complaints and will definitely use them again. They were very prompt when I originally called for an estimate and were up front about when their next open appointments were (about 1 month wait when I called). I am SO impressed by Don's Tree Service. We have a large 100+ year old Redwood Tree in our front yard that was in desperate need of a trim. I had a few other companies that I found online come out to give me an estimate on raising the canopy a bit so that branches were not hanging over our roof / fence / neighbor's yard etc. and was getting very disheartened by the high quotes I was receiving for the job. After finding Don's tree service on Yelp, I gave him a call and he quickly scheduled a time to come see the tree and give me an estimate. The cost he quoted me was a FRACTION of what other companies were going to charge (one even quoted me 3X the amount that Don did!). We scheduled the service right away and his crew showed up on time and finished the trimming while I was at work. I expected to come home and have to sweep and clean up our front yard but they left our yard SPOTLESS! Wednesday, called for an estimate. Thursday afternoon, appraiser came out promptly, gave me a very reasonable quote. Called them back Thursday evening to schedule an appointment, they said they could be out that Saturday at 8am. Workers showed up a little before 8am, gone at ~9:15am, 5 liquid amber trees gone, down to the stump. They were fast, efficient, friendly and affordable. I made the mistake of giving another company a try who came in at a lower price for part of the job and they never showed up. I had Don's Tree Service out a few weeks ago to trim and top my italian cypresses and grind a tree stump. As usual, they showed up on time, were super nice and professional, cleaned up well, and did a great job. Don's tree service did a great job. Had a 70 (about) foot redwood fall on my neighbor's house. It was resting on the house and needed someone to come out as soon as possible, it was during the last sever wind and rain storm. The estimator John, came out the very next day right on time. Gave me a fair estimate and then called me that night to tell me they had an opening for Sat. the next day. I couldn't even get anyone else out to give me a bid until the following Monday. Sat. rolled around and Don's tree service showed up with Robert leading a four man crew. He carefully assessed the situation and with his crew, some tackle lines and great skill safely lowered tree down without any damage whatsoever to the house. It was a masterful job. Have already referred them to a friend who needs a tree remove. I'll post a video so you can see how precarious the tree was. My neighbor and I were amazed at how smoothly and safely they worked. They cleaned up and were gone in less then 3 hours and with an another appointment to return for the stump grinding once the ground dried up. I was a little intimidated looking for a company to cut down a tree in my back yard. I know that just like Auto Repair, there are companies that will take advantage of a situation and overcharg people who don't know anything about their business. I saw the reviews about Don's tree service and I was planning on giving them a call. Just so happens the day I was going to call them another company was doing tree service on my neighbors tree and the looked very professional. I asked them for a quote and the next day they were here. The quote they gave me for all the service I wanted was $850. I was shocked that it would cost that much and my "Rip Off" alarm immediately went off. I called Don's tree service and they came out two days later and gave me a quote for $250 less and threw in stump grinding. I booked the job and made an appointment for the coming weekend. That weekend they showed up right on time, took the time to explain just what they were going to do, and started work. They were very professional and cleaned everything before they left. They didn't pressure me to do more work and said I didn't need to pay them until the stump grinding crew showed up to finish the job. I saw the Yelp reviews for Don's and thought i would give them a shot. The experience was top notch.
