First of all, after our big storm, our tree fell, and they were willing to come out and take a look at the damage right away. Wow, what a great job they did and amazing customer service! We had hired another tree service to do the work and had booked out 2 weeks earlier. They were a no call no show. So when choosing a home I noted what type of tree, condition and size the house in question had. Fortunately the house that worked out a sale did not have too many tree issues, but they were neglected and needed care soon. Hanging over the roof (yikes) with broken branches precariously drooping overhead (double yikes) I looked into local arborist asap. Scott got back to me and visited our yard on a Saturday. Sort of a laid back guy, in casual garb (it was the weekend after all) he seemed to be knowledgeable on our trees needs. He gave an expected price and even informed me of my orchard trees in the back (bonus info!) So I committed to hiring him. Due to a booming economy, market and business, it's been hard to get any contractor to commit to various projects around the home. His crew did a good job, didn't bother the neighbors even though they had to work on branches hanging over their property. For all around solid tree trimming service and even some landscaping now and then, they are great. The tree trimming guys were friendly and professional and worked quickly. I could communicate with them extremely easily, which is nice. The reason I'm only giving three stars is that they didn't go the extra mile as far as clean-up afterwards. My sidewalk, deck, rock garden, and even my sliding glass door (!) was left messy with twigs, mud and such. I have hoses and brooms sitting right out there and if they didn't have a way to clean up, I would have lent them my equipment. As a widow with a disabled daughter, I look for service people who go the extra mile and leave things nice and clean when they are done. Edited: I added an extra star because the owner showed up today to apologize for the mess and to clean it up. That makes me feel better! Thank you, Scott! I DO NOT recommend California Tree-- FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS: 1) NO WRITTEN BID: They (Scott and Bill) did not provide me with a written bid-- first red flag-- They ONLY gave a VERBAL estimate for 1600usd No diagram of the work that was expected...(the company I chose provided this along with a written detailed documented estimate--with itemized map of work to be done-- That is the way to be professional and it took only another 3-5 min.) ALWAYS GET A WRITTEN ESTIMATE say Judge Judy. 2) TOO EXPENSIVE: The bid was vastly more expensive (3 times more expensive than the bid I chose for same work, second red flag). Their explanation, "Worker's comp insurance costs have risen". 3) NO DOCUMENTATION: They provided no written documentation of their workers comp. and liability ins. (also provided to me by the company I chose along with his bid) 4) LONG TIME TO REPLY: I was called three days after my initial call, it was on the fly, they "were in the area", could show up in 30 min. Good thing I was home and available. 5) They offered me a service that later I found out could not be provided: a stump grinding in too narrow a space,-- they said they could, turns out the machine would not fit. They offered no alternatives, the company I chose offered one. I did not experience their service other than during the bid/estimate process...that was enough for me to say "NO" when compared to the company I chose, Johnston's Tree Service-a certified arborist. If I could give -10 stars I would. He pollarded our mulberry and DESTROYED most of the rest of the yard. I say "he" meaning Scott's company as he only showed up to delivery lunch to his employees. The same employees who, when asked by my husband, "Please try not to break the other plants in the yard" told him, "We're doing the best we can." Wow! That's customer service! Not good customer service but, customer service none the less. Those of you who didn't get a call back from him, you dodged a bullet. Be grateful. California Tree Experts did major damage to my wisteria, my geraniums, my azaleas, my columbine, my lobelia, my lamium, my baby tears, my sedum not to mention the weeds I used to call my lawn. Oh, almost forgot the damage to my rain gutters. (Yes, Scott, they messed up TWO rain gutters from rolling the chunks of wood off of my roof to destroy the other landscaping! We had a huge palm tree - the type with the nasty thorns - that had been planted too close to our pool by the previous owner of our home. Scott saw the photos I sent and agreed it had to come out. His bid was far less than the others I got but it had no effect on the quality of his work. He and a helper had the 30 ft tall palm down in pieces, in the truck and gone in under two hours.
