I have read the Kondo stuff. The Montessori stuff for the kids. And incorporated what I thought made sense into my life. But yet....my living space never quite looks as nice as I had hoped. It's very helpful to have someone come to look at your living space. My husband and children are worthless at organizing, and Sarah is awesome. I always thought my apartment was not nice enough to have someone come to help organize. I thought professional organizers must deal with homes that are beautiful. But it's really about making your space work for you and your family, and Sarah is completely down to earth. I'm going to be working with her more for sure. I deserve it. My family deserves it. It's more worthwhile than a 90 minute massage. More liberating than an hour of psychotherapy. More gratifying than a few personal training sessions. Enter Sarah and Nest Happy. Sarah accommodated our busy working schedule. She came to our 3 hour session with tools to help us label bins I'd lined up for the sorting job. She also brought us a present, a beautiful orchid. What a kind and nice touch. I was impressed with Sarah's patient, relaxed, and knowledgeable working process. One of the worries I had, was that we wouldn't make enough progress in the time given and that the project would continue dragging on. I initially resisted some of her suggestions because I worried it would be too time consuming, and I was in denial of how much stuff we really had. In the course of the session she gently nudged me, like a good coach, in the right direction and I experienced first hand what she had been conveying. As we were moving along she took every opportunity to teach concepts of organization, that we later applied as we continued additional mini-projects after she left. Throughout she constantly checked in to re-confirm our goals for the session and see if those shifted. This turned out to be an important part of the decision making. Although the focus of the session was the garage, she took every opportunity to make suggestions about the rest of the house, and even put in some decorative organizational touches in our guest bathroom. Through her coaching I was able to let go of a number of items that were taking up space and weren't in use. This freed up time and energy to organize the objects that I do care about. Sarah's approach is pragmatic, aesthetically oriented, fun, effective, engaging. She's also a fun person to spend time with and that made the whole process so much easier. After she left, for the rest of the weekend, we were able to accelerate our progress of organizing our garage and other parts of the house, leveraging the techniques she taught me and the advice that she gave. She cleaned and opened up the space by rearranging the furniture and helped me plant some greenery. Once we had a blank canvas, she worked with me to understand how I envisioned using the space and came up with simple ideas on how to move pieces around so that it looked more intentional. We brainstormed ideas that would cozy up the space and make it much more functional -- we ended up going for a Vietnamese-inspired outdoor eating area. She helped me come up with ideas for decor and now the space feels so much cozier and I spend much more time there! I highly recommend working with Linh. We unofficially began house hunting in April 2012 and met Lisa at an open house. We liked her immediately for three reasons. One, she specialized in San Carlos. While most agents we met claimed to be experts on every community on the peninsula, Lisa was a San Carlos expert. Two, she lived in San Carlos, hence her personal expertise. Three, she wasn't pushy. It seemed like the listing agents at every other open house we went to were as eager to get our business as they were to show the house that they were supposed to be selling. Last September we called her once we were ready to start bidding. By then the Silicon Valley housing market was exploding, especially in San Carlos, with prices increasing by almost 20% from when we had started looking. Lisa spent countless hours with us looking at homes in and around San Carlos and patiently dealt with the many, many questions that we had. We were losing bid after bid (I believe 7-8 of them) due to the extreme competition in the area. On more than one occasion we had put forward the highest bids, but lost out to all-cash offers. Thus Lisa was giving us sound advice on how to make a competitive offer, but the nature of this ultra-competitive market meant that we unfortunately kept coming up short. Now here's what separated Lisa from your average real estate agent. Early on in our search Lisa had offered to go door-to-door in her neighborhood looking for people who might be interested in selling their homes. We thought that she was nuts, but had no problem with her doing so. Well after about 3 months of failed bids she found someone who was looking to sell their home off-market. We jumped at the chance to see it, especially since it meant that we wouldn't be competing with ten other offers, which was normal with MLS-listed homes. It worked. We managed to get a bigger place than anything we had previously bid on or thought that we could afford, and because it was off-market we probably got it for at least 10% lower than market value. In San Carlos that 10% is six figures, so this was a serious savings. Given what's out there in the market right now, it would not be an exaggeration to say that the value of our house has increased by 20% in less than 6 months. She was never on time, and trying to schedule her was always a hassle - it was never the same interval, never the same day of the week or the same time, and she scheduled based on her whim. Although she purported to provide "quality" house cleaning, she started out doing an OK job but did not maintain it - for the "per-job" rate that we negotiated, she started by spending roughly 3-4 hours, but by the end, she would run through in just over an hour. Her services never really achieved a level that I was satisfied with.
