What a great find! I stopped by here with a big group, and the owners welcomed us with smiles and overwhelming enthusiasm. The donuts are primarily cake donuts (not my fave), which my husband raved about. However, they do have a few fried options, especially their filled donuts, which are easily the best I've ever had. The prices are reasonable, the owners are sweet, and the donuts themselves are phenomenal, which probably account for the incredibly busy environment we witnessed when we stopped by on a Sunday morning. It's a pretty no-frills place, but if you don't want to stay to enjoy your breakfast, you could always take it to go. Some of the best glazed doughnuts I've tried in the midwest. Even though it looks like a dive, the place makes some good airy dough and for SUCH a low price. Unfortunately, I can't give 5-starts because their other flavors just don't match to their plain-glazed doughnut. Well, our norm of using debit and credit cards can be a technological challenge for a small business. So when the guy in front of us went to pay for his coffee and two doughnuts with his card and the machine errored and this customer had no cash, the guy kindly gave him his breakfast for free. Free. I love the Donut Hut. The staff is always friendly, no matter the time of day. And the donuts are the closest I have found to my childhood favorite bakery. The chocolate iced fried cinnamon roll is number one on my list. Yet, the fact that a donut can be filled on demand with your choice of pudding or fluff makes this the best donut place in the metro. Friendly man, tasty 'nuts. Be prepared for some good-natured back-and-forth with the owner, he likes to joke around. It's fun, but the people in front of me in line expected to just shuffle up meekly and order, and I could tell they were caught off guard by his demeanor. He was obviously thankful for each customer's business and is a credit to the community!! These donuts have a subtly distinct personality, they are not heavy but there is some density to them. The cinnamon crunch and coconut crunch toppings are excellent.. and the more traditional donuts are right on the money as well. The maple topping is great, don't hesitate to order multiples. Chocolate cake donuts/chocolate frosted aren't overwhelmingly chocolately (which is either positive, negative, or neutral depending on your predilection). The apple fritters may be the standout item .. an even apple and cinnamon taste throughout. And the edges are crispy, but the center delivers with a soft spongy-ness often missing from other apple fritters. They're big, but you can eat an entire fritter without regretting it, it isn't too oily, or too dense, or too frosted. Pretty chill donut shop. ALSO HAS BLUE BUNNY ICE CREAM! I'm guessing the man there was the owner. They had pretty neat flavors. Their chocolate chip donut looked like a chocolate chip bagel! I have to admit, I've had better donuts. They kind of lacked on the filling though which was dissapointing. I believe 1 normal donut was a little under $1 (0.89-0.99) and their specialty donuts were over a dollar ($1.19?). They also had little donut balls (something like 5 for $2). I asked the owner if all their donuts were deep fried (because there is such thing as baked donuts!) and he told me that none of their donuts. They were just dipped in water. Really great little spot for handmade donuts. They also have a ton of ice cream flavors. One of our weekly summer traditions is to eat dinner at Wasabi Chi and walk over to Donut Hut for dessert. Hiland Bakery used to be my favorite donut shop in Des Moines, but Donut Hut donuts are just as good these days, AND they're open on weekends. The owners are so kind and welcoming, while having a good sense of humor. Apple fritters are my gauge of whether a donut shop has the goods, mostly because they're my favorite, but also because I see a lot of variance from one shop to the next in how they're executed. I've tried quite a few bakeries and donut shops over the years. I'm confident that I know a good donut vs a great one. These were good, but not great. First of all the display case is against the wall behind the counter. That makes it difficult to see what's available and what you want. Most shops have the case up front so you can easily see and choose, point if needed. We got ours to go. A couple glazed, a long John, blueberry cake and an apple fritter. They were all too dry for our preference. The cake donut and apple fritter weren't as dry as the glazed. The glazed donuts were too dry and the glazing was skimpy. The dog didn't seem to mind though. We'll try it again sometime for a second chance, but I don't think it'll be my "go-to" shop for donuts. The bakery in Hiland Park is much better. Too bad it's closed on Saturday read more
