We made our trek to Shaikh's based on an off-handed remark from a guy in our building. We had some donuts in our hand and he said he had tried "Some place on Ave U in Brooklyn". Yelp led us straight here, and yesterday we had a chance to stop in. We had eaten a late breakfast so were just going to grab a half dozen donuts and man, they looked terrific. But once we stepped in, we saw a patron eating a taco and well, we had to try them. For science. We tried both the beef and pork, along with a side of rice and some Mello Yello (guilty pleasure). The. Tacos. Were. Awesome. The meat was perfectly seasoned, the tortillas were the perfect texture, and that green sauce, oh man. I love that they put the potatoes in the beef tacos, just like my old Mexican friends used to make them. We got donuts for dessert and brought them home, along with a couple extra tacos. We stopped in here one afternoon. It is a simple shop with a good selection of donuts and pastries as well as a small lunch menu. This is the cheapest dozen of donuts I have found anywhere lately. It was cheaper than the dozen donuts I had in Ohio the weekend before. A bakers dozen here is only $7.50. It is certainly a hole-in-the wall and it is recommended you know what you want before getting up to order. In fact, as we were standing there discussing what donuts to get, they were being picked out by the person helping us. They donuts were delicious. We had a few including a chocolate glazed and strawberry frosted. The chocolate glazed was one of the best chocolate donuts I have ever had. The doughnut was the right level of cakey and chocolatey. This is certainly a spot worth seeking out for donuts or maybe a cheap pork chop. Do note that it is cash only. Also, the page said that this place "has a TV". Upon opening box, there were 2 donuts I ordered and the rest were plain donuts. When I called them, they said that was all they had and then promptly hung up on me! Actually, the place is kind of dumpy on the outside and on the inside.......but this adds to the whole "old school doughnut shop" experience. Boston cream, sugared, chocolate coconut, glazed, jelly, apple filled and the list goes on and on. I would definitely consider these to be awesome doughnuts that far exceed what you might expect from say, D.D. I'm not sure how that's possible, but I am not compaining. $7.50 for a flash of diabetes is okay with me. We ended up getting 4 donuts for the prize of $3 (again, I could not believe the prices) and these were REAL donuts - not the crappy hollowed out flakes of dough with icing that you get from Dunkin Donuts. We went with the chocolate cake donut, the strawberry frosted with sprinkles, the chocolate with white swirls, and a fourth I cannot recall at the moment. All donuts were at the right amount of doughy-ness/cake and sweetness, dependent on their appropriate type. None were artificial tasting or cloyingly sweet, as other places tend to do. Strawberry frosted is my go-to, and this place did not disappoint. The chocolate wasn't to my liking at first, but the more I ate it, the more I liked and appreciated the lightness of the cake (I know, contradictory) and the light icing exterior. I want to preface this by saying I never bought from the shop itself, it was always through Seamless delivery. Anyways, I've ordered from them twice now and got their bakers dozen donut box. It was a little hard to figure out a proper rating for this because the two times had vastly different ratings. The first time I got about 50% of the donuts I had asked for (can't SUPER complain because on the app they say they will replace missing donuts with others that are similar). They were pretty good still despite not having the full selection. The second time (today) they gave me NONE of the donuts I had asked for. On top of that, they were SUPER greasy to the point where I can feel the grease film on my teeth/in my mouth. I wish they would implement something on their end where if you can't get more than 50% of your donut selection to just cancel the order entirely. I was super disappointed today and I am going to throw all of them out as they are just inedible. Waste of my money. I think next time (if I order next time), I will add a note to cancel my order if they can't 50% fulfill. They are unfortunately the closest non-garbo Dunkin Donuts donut shop. Well, I recently read online that this place actually has very good donuts and I decided to try it when I didn't see a line. The cashier wasn't overly friendly and just took my order with a straight face. Based on some other reviews, I probably wouldn't come here if there were a lot of people waiting for fear of getting poor service. I had the vanilla frosted donut with rainbow sprinkles. It tasted light and airy as well as not too sweet. This is what Dunkin should be but isn't. It was a really satisfying donut. Not a gourmet donut, but more an old school traditional kind. Very good. Move over Dunkin Donut! These succulent donuts are one of the best I have ever consumed in NYC. They are freshly made every day, and cost only 70 cents per donut! Keep in mind, the crappy overly processed donuts sold at Dunkin now cost 90 cents, and they don't even taste that great! The donuts here are locally made, with a ton of different varieties to choose from ( glazed, strawberry sprinkles, bavarian cream, eclair, chocolate, coconut, etc). I ran in to try grab some of their donuts as there were plenty of positive reviews on Yelp. Not disappointed at all. As i have mentioned in a previous donut review, I am by no-means a connoisseur of donuts but these were pretty good. My powdered donut was delicious with just the right amount of jelly filling (I absolutely hate it when they cram a lot of filling in and it spills all over when a bite is taken). Not overly filling.
